In juni wordt in Naarden een seminar gegeven waarin deel I van De Geheime Leer van H.P. Blavatsky in een flink tempo nader toegelicht wordt. Het seminar vindt plaats van dinsdag 12 juni tot en met zondag 17 juni 2012 en wordt gegeven in het Engels door Martin Leiderman.

De Stanza’s van Dzyan worden beschouwd te behoren tot de vroegst geschreven teksten over de Oude Wijsheid. Deze Stanza’s vormen het fundament van De Geheime Leer van Blavatsky.

Het seminar biedt een unieke gelegenheid tot een dieper begrip van de Stanza’s van Dzyan. De Stanza’s zullen op een moderne, beeldende en interactieve manier besproken worden. Ze zullen worden vergeleken met moderne wetenschap, filosofische tradities en religieuze verhalen over de schepping van kosmos en mens.

De reis tijdens dit seminar zal de fundamentele ideeën in de Stanza’s onderzoeken, de wet van analogie en overeenkomst toepassen op De Geheime Leer met behulp van Plato’s De Staat en instrumenten aanreiken om de archetypische ideeën uit de Stanza’s te integreren in een alomvattende visie. Dit gebeurt via lezingen en workshops.

Martin Leiderman uit Los Angeles, is daar werkzaam als ingenieur en heeft al sinds lang de theosofie bestudeerd en er les in gegeven.

Van 19 tot 22 juli 2012 vindt in het Internationaal Theosofisch Centrum te Naarden een stille retraite plaats onder leiding van Trân-Thi-Kim-Diêu (Engels- en Franstalig). Het onderwerp van de retraite is De Paramita’s of transcendente Deugden, waarbij uitgegaan wordt van het boekje De Stem van de Stilte van H.P. Blavatsky.

De folder vande retraite stelt het volgende:  

The object of the retreat is to share time in the peaceful atmosphere of the Centre, which fosters a quiet mind that is the beginning of right action. The continuity of these retreats during previous years helps to create and  consolidate true understanding through the zetetic (deep inquiring) way of thinking which is a guarantee for long-lasting spiritual development of both the individual and the Centre.

In het weekend van 15 en 16 september vindt in Leiden en Naarden een internationale conferentie plaats over spirituele crisis, onder de titel Consciousness in Crisis (Engelstalig en Nederlandstalig).

Uit de aankondiging: Spiritualiteit is een officiële categorie in de definitie van gezondheid van The World Health Organisation, waar men gezondheid ziet als de dynamiek van fysiek, mentaal, sociaal en spiritueel welbevinden. Dit betekent dat ontregelde gezondheid het gevolg kan zijn van crisiservaringen die verband houden met spiritualiteit.

Men spreekt van ‘spirituele crisis’ als iemand in een proces van sychologische transformatie is beland, waarbij sprake is van “buitengewone ervaringen” zoals veranderde bewustzijnstoestanden, visioenen, paranormale ervaringen, energetische storingen, en ongewone lichamelijke sensaties. Deze ervaringen kunnen gepaard gaan met sterke gevoelens van zowel numineuze verhevenheid als diepe angst. Het is een ervaringswereld waar creativiteit, inspiratie en psychopathologie elkaar naderen en soms overlappen.

De eerste dag van de conferentie, 15 september, zal plaatsvinden in Leiden (Leiden University); de tweede dag, 16 september,  in het Internationaal Theosofische Centrum in Naarden.

Op zaterdag 2 juni zal Mariël Polman een lezing houden getiteld Kleur en materie –  over Theo van Doesburg. De lezing vindt plaats bij de Theosofische Vereniging in Amsterdam, Tolstraat 154, aanvang 14.00 uur.

Theo van Doesburg (1883-1931) was overtuigd geraakt van de vergeestelijking van de kunst en had daarover contacten met Piet Mondriaan en met andere leden van de theosofische kunstenaarsloge, de Vahana loge, destijds in Amsterdam. De lezing zal gaan over kleurtheorieën, kleurontwerpen en kleurtoepassing in architectuur in het werk van Theo van Doesburg.

 De zaal is open vanaf 13.30 uur. Toegangsprijs: €   4,-   (voor niet-leden)

Toelichting bij de lezing:

Theo van Doesburg, mede-oprichter van het blad De Stijl, heeft als kunstenaar,architect en theoreticus kleurtheorieën geschreven en kleurontwerpen gemaakt voor gebouwen.

Huis De Lange in Alkmaar, de Aubette in Straatsburg en zijn eigen atelierwoning in Meudon werden in de afgelopen decennia gerestaureerd, inclusief de toegepaste kleuren. Daardoor is bekend met welke materialen zijn ontwerpen zijn uitgevoerd.

Vragen die aan de orde zullen komen:

Hoe verhouden theorie, ontwerp en uitvoering zich ten opzichte van elkaar?

Welke invloeden zijn terug te vinden in zijn denk- en werkwijze?

A five-day Summer National Gathering of the TS in America will take place immediately preceding the Conference, from 19 July to 23 July. All are invited to attend this event as well.

Personal memories of Rukmini Devi

In our last issue of the newsletter we featured Rukmini Devi as our ‘Inspirational person’. The article prompted long-time member of the TOS and TS in America, Miles Standish, to write and share his memory of Rukmini.

Miles writes, “I can’t help wanting to share my own memories of this truly inspiring Theosophist.

“I first met Rukmini at the HQ of the TS in the USA in 1947. It was my first visit to ‘Olcott’. I drove there from Florida on an Indian Chief motorcycle. John and Betsan Coats were there too. (John Coats was the 4th International President of the TS. –Ed.) Betsan put on an ‘India Night’ down in the basement cafeteria, with hand-painted designs on the floor. Rukmini danced!  Inspirational people – Barbro Melander

To Theosophists, Barbro was chiefly a dynamic force in the Swedish Theosophical Society and a well-loved chairperson of the European Federation of the TS. Within her homeland, however, she was widely known as a front line social activist, a role in which she remained vigorous until close to her death in 2000 at the age of 84.

At her memorial service, close TS associates Curt Berg and Ing-Britt Wiklund said:

“Barbro was a bundle of energy and she was active to the very end. Her energy was catching. Many of us received phone calls from her starting, ‘Hello, it’s Barbro here. Can you imagine…?’ ending with, ‘What do we do?’ not ‘Shall we do something?’ That was how she was, our Barbro – she not only ascertained that something was wrong, she did something to change it.”

As founding member, general secretary and then chairperson of the South Sweden Environmental Action Group (Aktiv Skåne-Miljö), Barbro appeared on television in Scandinavia, France, Germany and England. She received several awards for her action in defence of the environment, including the environment prize for the city of Malmö in 1992.

Theosophy was a major influence in her work as an environmental activist as can be seen in her interview with the TOS. She believed that: “To be able to be of some use in social and environmental work, one has to know oneself and one’s limits, and one must be able to love co-workers – and understand one’s antagonists. All this is perhaps an expression of the deeper understanding of life and of the task of transformation that Theosophy gives us.”

Barbro had been a member of the Theosophical Society for 63 years when she passed away from liver cancer in 2000. 

A theosophical perspective on schizophrenia and alcoholism

We draw your attention to a series of articles started jointly on two Theosophical websites,

International Theosophy Conferences (www.theosconf.org ) and

Theosophy Forward (http://www.theosophyforward.com/ ).

The articles look at thorny social problems in the light of theosophical teachings. They are intended to help us deal with some of the traumas with which we can be faced in the course of our lives.

The first two articles examine the issues of schizophrenia and alcoholism. You can find them through the linked words. The issues to be dealt with in the edition of Theosophy Forward appearing in late June will be suicide and marijuana addiction. Other subjects lined up include Alzheimer’s disease, abortion, physical disability and the effects of psychic practices. Authors Sally and James Colbert draw on their knowledge of Theosophy and their background in clinical psychology in their attempt to focus attention on issues relevant to all engaged in service.

We congratulate International Theosophy Conferences and Theosophy Forward on this initiative.

Op zaterdag 26 én zondag 27 mei 2012 organiseert Stichting I.S.I.S. een inspirerend tweedaags symposium, met als thema:

De groei van mens en mensheid: een boven-politieke visie op veranderingen in de samenleving

Het symposium vindt plaats in het gebouw van het International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) aan de Kortenaerkade 12 in Den Haag.

Uit de aankondiging:

“Elk mens leert en groeit in bewustzijn. Daarom verandert de samenleving. Over de gewenste richting van die veranderingen zijn evenveel meningen als mensen. Verandering brengt onzekerheid met zich mee, maar biedt ook mogelijkheden.

De Theosofia biedt sleutels om de cyclische groei van mens en mensheid te leren begrijpen. Kennis van de processen die we als mensheid al hebben doorgemaakt en nog zullen doormaken, maakt helder wie we zijn, waar we nu staan en waar we heengaan. Het plaatst actuele gebeurtenissen in een veel groter perspectief, waardoor je onafhankelijk van meningen en prognoses van financiële en politieke deskundigen je eigen koers in het leven kunt bepalen.
