Het Paranormale is onder Ons – De Wonderen van Meester Philippe

Door Christian Vandekerkhove.

135 Bladzijden | Uitgegeven in 2009 | Softcover | Mens & Cultuur Uitgevers, Gent | ISBN: 9789077135198.

Gnosis – Kennis van het Hart

Een Symposiumbundel geschreven door Jacob Slavenburg, Willem G. Glaudemans, Rachel Ritman en Ina Vonk met een Voorwoord van Prof. Dr. Gilles Quispel (1916 – 2006).

91 Pages | Uitgegeven in 1997 | Softcover | Uitgeverij Ankh-Hermes BV, Deventer | ISBN: 9020281461.

De Kabbala – Het Hart van de Joodse Mystiek

By Daniel C. Matt, vertaald door Julius Wintjes.

300 Pages | Eerste editie 1995, Nederlandse edities 1997 & 2005 | Hardcover | Rainbow Dimensie 8, onderdeel van Uitgeverij Maarten Muntinga BV., Amsterdam | ISBN: 9789041720283.

Engels origineel: The Essential Kabbalah: The Heart of Jewish Mysticism | Eerste editie 1995 | HarperSanFrancisco, onderdeel van HarperCollins Inc.

” God zei tegen Adam: ‘Ga heen.’

Stoische Notities

Door Rymke Wiersma.

209 Pagina’s | Uitgegeven in 2011 | Softcover | Uitgeverij Atalanta, Utrecht | ISBN: 9789073034440.

Mindfulness in Actie

Door Chögyam Trungpa, verzameld en geredigeerd door Carolyn Rose Gimian.

216 Pages | Uitgegeven in 2015 | Softcover | Uitgeverij Juwelenschip, Cothen | ISBN: 9789076681252.

English origineel: Mindfulness in Action | Uitgegeven in 2015 | Shambhala Publications Inc., Boston & London | ISBN: 9781611800203.

Mystic Experiences – Tales of Yoga and Vedanta from The Yogavasishtha

By Dr. Bhagavan Das (1869-1958), with Notes by Annie Besant (1847–1933).

114 Pages | Published in 1988 | Softcover | The Indian Bookshop, The Theosophical Society, Varanasi | No ISBN.

Two histories of the Sage Valmiki wrote, to teach the growing world he loved so well, the way of virtue and of happiness. The one, intended for the younger souls, depicts the outer life of Rama, prince and King of Avadha and tells of how he warred against, and slew the evil King, Ravana.

This ancient book is known to the world as Ramayana. The other, helpful at a later stage, is called Maha Ramayana, Greater Book, and it describes the inner life of Rama, telling how he triumphed over foes within himself, and so prepared to fight and conquer, for the helping of the world, the outer evil forces rampant in that time.

From Book III – ‘The World Illusion and the Real Self’ (p. 51):

” Rama: How may I understand that Paramatma is, and that these worlds are not?

Vasishtha: He who understands that the world is an illusion, just as much as the colour of blue which appears to belong to the emptiness of space is an illusion, he has in truth understood the nature of the Supreme. “

Bhagavad-Gita – The Song of God

Commentary by Mohandas K. Gandhi.

127 Pages | First edition 2002, reprinted 2003 | Softcover | Axiom Publishing, Australia | ISBN: 1864761709.

‘When doubts haunt me, when disappointments stare me in the face, and I see not one ray of hope on the horizon, I turn to Bhagavad-Gita and find a verse to comfort me: and I immediately begin to smile in the midst of overwhelming sorrow. Those who meditate on the Gita will derive fresh joy and new meaning from it every day’. – Mohandas K. Gandhi.

Mohandas Gandhi was a Hindu from birth and consequently always had a copy of the Bhagavad Gita close by. However, it was not until he was a law student living in England that he gained a firm grasp on its real meaning. It was this deeper meaning, which would guide him in all he was to do.

From Discourse 15 – ‘ Purushottama Yoga’ (p. 109):

” 12. The light in the sun which illumines the whole universe and which is in the moon and in fire – that light, know thou, is Mine;

13. It is I, who penetrating the earth uphold all beings with My strengh, and becoming the moon – the essence of all sap – nourish all the herbs;

14. It is i who becoming the Vaishvanara Fire and entering the bodies of all that breathe, assimilate the four kinds of food with the help of the outward and the inward breaths.

15. And am I seated in the hearts of all, from Me proceed memory, knowledge and the dispelling of doubts; it is I who am to be known in all the Vedas, I, the author of Vedanta and the knower of the Vedas. “

The Spiritualscape of the Upaniṣad-s

By R. Balasubramanian, general editor S. Sankaranarayanan.

27 Pages | First edition 2007 – The Adyar Library Pamphlet Series No. 63 | Pamphlet | The Adyar Library and Research Center, India | No ISBN.

The Upaniṣad-s are extraordinary texts and not only the concluding portion, but also the consummation of the Veda-s. There are four Veda-s, and each Veda has four sections, which are called Mantra, Brāhmaṇa, Āraṇyaka, and Upaniṣad. The Mantra-s are hymns in praise of Gods and Goddesses. The Brāhmaṇa-s deal with sacrificial rites. The Āraṇyaka-s contain meditative practices. The Upaniṣad-s are philosophical treatises dealing with Being and beings of all kinds.

The aim of the Upaniṣad-s, according to Śamkara, is to help human beings dis-cover the Self, which is Brahman and overcome the existential predicament. The goal can be achieved only by means of a new thinking, a radical questioning of the given, a rigorous inquiry into the life-world, which is bound to lead to a transvaluation of all values through deconstruction and reconstruction.

From page 14:

” The enlightened one attains unity with the All. He expresses wonder that the individual with all limitations has been able to shake them off and become one with the All. To get at the Real, we must get behind the forms of matter, the forms of life, the forms of mind, the forms of intellect. By removing the sheaths, by shaking off the bodies, we realise the Highest. This is the meaning of vastrāpaharaṇa. ‘Across my threshold naked all must pass’. “

The Bhagavad Gita (Vintage)

Translated and with a Preface by Eknath Easwaran (1910 – 1999).

122 Pages | A Vintage Spiritual Classic Original 2000; abridged version | Vintage Books, A Division of Random House, Inc., New York | ISBN: 9780375705557.

The Bhagavad Gita (Sanskrit for ‘Song of the Lord’) is the most famous poem in all of Hindu literature and part of the Mahabharata, the great Indian epic. The Gita consists of a dialogue between Lord Krishna and Prince Arjuna on the morning of a climactic battle. Krishna provides Prince Arjuna with the spiritual means to take action under trying circumstances . Of course, the larger canvas painted in the poetry is that of the moral universe of Hinduism. As the late noted teacher and scholar Eknath Easwaran writes in the Preface:

‘The Gita does not present a system of philosophy. It offers something to every seeker after God, of whatever temperament, by whatever path. The reason for this universal appeal is that it is basically practical: it is a handbook for Self-realization and a guide to action’.

From Chapter 4 – ‘Wisdom in Action’ (p. 25):

” The awakened sages call a person wise when all his undertakings are free from anxiety about results; all his selfish desires have been consumed in the fire of knowledge. The wise, ever satisfied, have abandoned all external supports. Their security is unaffected by the results of their action; even while acting, they really do nothing at all. Free from expectations and from all sense of possession, with mind and body firmly controlled by the Self, they do not incur sin by the performance of physical action. “

The Role of Māyā in Man’s Evolution

By Seymour D. Ballard.

19 Pages | Softcover | The Blavatsky Lecture, 1986 | The Theosophical Society in England, London | No ISBN.

The Blavatsky Lecture delivered at the Annual Convention of the Theosophical Society in England at the College of Ripon and York, St. John, Ripon, July 29th, 1986.

A vital feature of the esoteric traditions contains the notion that all manifestation is to be regarded as illusion. Illusion is the usual translation of the Sanskrit word māyā. Yet, although she uses this definition of the Sanskrit Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891) presents important qualifications to the word to help the student fathom the subject matter in her major work. She writes: ‘Māyā or Illusion, is an element which enters into all finite things, for everything that exists has only a relative, not an absolute, reality, since the appearance which the hidden noumenon assumes for any observer depends upon his power of cognition…’

From page 4:

” Nothing is permanent except the one hidden absolute Existence which contains in itself the noumena of all realities. The existences belonging to every plane of being, up to the highest Dhyan Chohans, are, comparatively, like the shadows cast by a magic lantern on a colourless screen. Nevertheless, all things are relatively real, for the cognizer is also a reflection, and the things cognised are therefore as real to him as himself. Whatever reality things possess, must be looked for in them before or after they have passed like a flash through the material world; for we cannot cognize any such existence directly, so long as we have sense instruments, which bring only material existences into the field of our consciousness. “

Somnio Scipionis – (Vision of Scipio)

By Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 BC. – 43 BC).

19 Pages | Unknown publication date | Pocket Pamphlet No. 1 | The Wizards Bookshelf, San Diego U.S.A. | No ISBN.

This short fragment of Cicero generally known as the Vision of Scipio to those, who are seeking for the scattered pearls, which once adorned the sacred bosom of the pure virgin of the mysteries, before she was defiled and her robe and jewels trampled in the mire of the sty, is perhaps the most interesting record in the voluminous writings of the great Roman orator.

Whence Tully derived his information, whether from the writings of the outer schools of Pythagorean and Platonic philosophy, or from private sources, is in the present case immaterial.

From page 18:

” Since, therefore, it is evident that that only is eternal, which is self-motive. Who is there to deny that this is a rational attribute of Souls? For everything which is set in motion by external impulse is destitute of the Soul principle, whereas everything ensouled is energised by an interior and self-created motion; for this is the Soul’s proper nature and power. “

Healing Without Medicine – From Pioneers To Modern Practice

By Albert Amao, PhD., Foreword by Mitch Horowitz.

323 Pages | First Quest Edition 2014 | Softcover | Quest Books U.S.A., | ISBN: 9780835609210.

‘How Millions have been healed through the Mind alone’.

The aim of this book is to demonstrate the power of thought to heal the mind and body. Amao examines the rationale behind so-called mind, spiritual, and faith healing and explain why this kind of treatment works where conventional medicine fails. Amao also examines the most prominent leaders of the New Thought movement, who used mental and spiritual means to recover their health from supposedly ‘incurable’ diseases, and he describes the mechanism that triggered their healing. Finally, he explains why some people do not respond to any kind of treatment, with medicine or without it.

Mainstream academia should be made aware that mental and spiritual healing is an authentic, American-made phenomenon, that originated in and has flourished since the nineteenth century, particularly in New England. This phenomenon continues to develop today through the emerging field of energy psychology, which includes Thought Field Therapy and its derivatives, such as the Emotional Freedom Technique and similar practices.

Amao’s main hypothesis is this: All methods of mind and spiritual healing are self-healing. Human beings have an inner capacity to heal themselves. Indeed, conventional medicine can be said to heal, because it removes obstacles so that the body can regain its recuperative capacity.

From Chapter 12 – ‘Thomas Jay Hudson, The Scientific Working Hypothesis’ (p. 114):

” Some student of Occultism approach metaphysical studies with the idea of surrendering their will and conscious mind to the direction of the subconscious. This is dangerous, because the subconscious cannot direct itself. The person, who allows his subconscious to control him runs the risk that dormant, anarchic, and destructive forces in the psyche will express themselves at the least, expected times in devastating ways. When the conscious mind surrenders it dominion over the subconscious, the person becomes at the mercy of untamed primeval instincts, which could result in mental illness. As Hudson wrote, the subconscious cannot direct itself, nor can direct us. Its marvelous powers must always be definitely limited if they are to do us any real good. The unrestrained expression of the subconscious is insanity. “

Man And The Universe – A Quest

By A.R. Bakshi, Foreword by Radha S. Burnier (1923 – 2013).

136 Pages | First edition 1994 | Softcover | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592313.

The ‘Universe’ and ‘Man’, have both been the subject of study by great thinkers through the ages. Man and the Universe – A Quest presents some of the main principles of occult teaching to the ordinary reader and also supplies the serious student with sufficient material for original study offering profuse references to The Secret Doctrine (1888).

From Chapter VII – ‘Laws of Nature & Universal Truth and Order’ (p. 92 & 93):

” The whole life of the universe, according to the Ancients, is a part of a great artistic process cast into rhythmic phenomenal occurrences such as death and rebirth, creation and destruction, time and eternity, space and void, each occurrence symbolises an eternal cosmic movement. This concept of beauty and art in cosmic motion is symbolised as a female aspect of creative energy called in Indian mysticism ‘Durgā’ (the invincible), whose laws are impregnable. “

Theosophy – What’s It All About?

By Geoffrey A. Farthing (1909 – 2004).

84 Pages | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, London | ISBN: 0722952597.

What indeed is Theosophy about? It is about the universe, its nature and origins and the processes that operate in it. It is about man and his nature and origins and his relationship to the Whole of which he is a part. It is about law that operates throughout Nature; it is about evolution and individual responsibility, about Life and living and the purpose of it all, and it is about the ways of knowing that may set men free. The field of Theosophy is vast, and its literature is extensive. This book is an introduction to an absorbing and life-long study.

From Chapter – ‘The Purpose of Life (p. 20)’:

” The purpose of life is then to live. Living involves change and this change, as we shall see later, is cyclical but always on an expanding progressive scale, growth. Spirit or life on the one hand is descending into manifestation in the physical world, and on the other it is ascending by gradually improving forms through ever-unfolding consciousness, until the sage when Man endowed with mind achieves true self-consciousness. The activities of Spirit in physical forms give rise to the production and multiplication of individualized self-conscious units of Itself, human and ultimately super-human beings, each eventually returning to its source with its harvest of unique experience, attributes and power. Life, in short, is a journey to perfection. “

The Shaman And The Medicine Wheel

By Evelyn Eaton (1902 – 1983).

212 Pages | A Quest Original 1982 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835605612.

This is the personal logbook of Mahad’yuni (Evelyn Eaton), a woman of white and Indian ancestry. Evelyn is a Metis Medicine Woman of the Bear Medicine Tribe and the Deer Tribe, who received her Pipe from an Arapaho Medicine Man, and much of her eighteen year long training from the Paiute Medicine Man in the Owens Valley, who also made the Pipe for her and blessed it. This first person account of Amerindian healing rituals includes her personal triumphs over physical affliction. It is the story of a Sweat Lodge, a Medicine Wheel, Shamans, the Grandfathers, and ‘close to Mother Earth’ people. It is a story of deep compassion. It is a story of tenderness. It is a story of power – the power of extraordinary healing capacities that are available to every human being.

She subsequently immersed herself in study of Native American spiritual traditions. Her many books include:

From page 173:

” The Wiyag Wachipipi (dance looking at the Sun) is one of our greatest rites and was first held many, many winters after our people received the sacred Pipe from the White Buffalo Cow Woman. It is held each year during the Moon of Fattening (June) or the Moon of Cherries Blackening (July) always at the same time when the moon is full, for the growing and dying of the moon reminds us of our ignorance, which comes and goes; but when the moon is full it is as if the eternal light of the Great Spirit were upon the whole world. “

Studies in Abhidharma Literature and the Origins of Buddhist Philosophical Systems

By Erich Frauwallner (1898 – 1974), translated from the German by Sophie Francis Kidd and under the supervision of Ernst Steinkellner.

247 Pages | Published in 1995 | Softcover | State University of New York | ISBN: 0791427005.

This is a translation of Frauwallner’s Abhidarmastudien. It analyzes the literary traditions, doctrinal tendencies, and structural methods of the Buddhist Abhidharma Canon in order to expose the beginnings of systematic philosophical thought in Buddhism. Frauwallner’s insights illuminate the path of meditation toward liberation, the development of Buddhist psychology, and the evolution of the Buddhist view of causality and the problem of time. He provides a clear explanation of the gradual development of Buddhist thought from its early doctrinal beginning to some of the most complex and remarkable philosophical edifices in history.

From Chapter I – ‘The Earliest Abhidharma’ (p. 3):

” The question as to how the system of the Sarvāstivāda originated, the last authoritative summary of which is represented by Vasubandhu’s Abhidharmakośa and Saṃghabhadra’s Nyāyānusāra, can be answered – at least as far as the earliest period is concerned – with reference to a wealth of material in the canonical Abhidharma works of this school. Thus, it is with these works that research must begin, and the following essay is an attempt to characterize these works, assign them a place in the overall development, and demonstrate the contribution of each particular work to this development. ”

Cinderella’s Gold Slipper – Spiritual Symbolism in the Grimm’s Tales

By Samuel Denis Fohr.

223 Pages | Copyright 1991 | Softcover | Quest Books U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835606724.

You may think of the Grimm’s tales as ‘fairy tales’, which you heard as a child. But Samuel Fohr says that the Grimm’s tales are filled with spiritual symbolism, and as such have value for adults as well as children. Snow White, for example, is actually a story of creation and spiritual growth, and its message parallels Hindu and Judaic creation myths. Hansel and Gretel and Cinderella both portray journeying back to God. The author also looks at recurring themes in the stories and answers such questions as: What is the symbolic significance of the hungry wolf, who appears in many stories? Exactly what are genies and why are they always trapped in bottles?

A delightful, but serious examination of cherished stories, this book reveals new meaning in familiair tales. Samuel Fohr, is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. He received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Michigan and has taught courses in both Western and Eastern Philosophy. He also is the author of Adam and Eve – The Spiritual Symbolism of Genesis and Exodus.

From the Foreword (p. xii):

” There is, however, also a third level of reading the stories. All real fairy tales have an inner meaning and that is what makes them of such value. Blavatsky called it ‘their hidden meaning’, which she said has been comprehended in all ages by a few, who have ‘tried to open the eyes of the superstitious’ to the real meaning and use of the fairy tale. It is that level, which is dealt with in this book. In their essence, all folk and fairy tales describe the human adventure: our pilgrimage through the cosmos and our discovery of our own true nature. The setting of the fairy tale is a map to the esoteric universe, and its plot is our spiritual biography. As a character in J.B. Priestley’s play ‘I Have Been Here Before’ says, ‘We each live a fairy tale created by ourselves.’ ‘Cinderella’, ‘Hansel and Gretel’, ‘Jack, The Giant Killer’, ‘Little Red Ridinghood’, ‘Snow White’, and all such traditional tales are maps of our way into – and out of – the Woods. They are guidebooks to our journey outward to the cosmos and inward into our own psyches. “

Bhagavad Gītā – De Dialoog Tussen Krishna En Arjuna Uit De Mahābhārata

Vertaald door Erik Mossel.

144 Pages | Uitgegeven in 1993 | Hardcover | Panta Rhei, Katwijk | ISBN: 9073207355.

The Apocalypse and Initiation

By Daisy E. Grove.

131 Pages | First Adyar Edition 2005 | Softcover | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170594626.

The first part of the book explains the symbolism of the Apocalypse. An enigma to orthodoxy, this word has been interpreted in countless ways and speculated upon for the hidden meaning it is intended to convey. Significantly it found inclusion in the Christian Canon and has been preserved unaltered through centuries.

In the second part, the author explains that apocalypse is indeed ‘unveiling’ of what had been hidden, and goes on to present the Mystery-Drama of Initiation, in seven principal acts/episodes based on the authorized version of the Bible. The drama ends with the marriage, symbolizing the union of the Soul and the Spirit.

From Chapter 5 – ‘Animal Symbols’ (p. 47):

” The horn is a universal symbol of power, therefore the horns of this bogus lamb indicate the power that it exerts in its own realm. The horns of animals are their strength and defence, the leader of a flock being the horned male. Hence, the horns of the ram (Aries) associated with man’s intellectual principle symbolizes his ruling faculty or powers of leadership. In biblical language, to lift up the horn, exalt the horn, cut off the horn, always refers to powers strengthened, abused or weakened. The speech of the pseudo-lamb, compared to that of a dragon, is pretended knowledge, for the dragon, like the serpent, is a familiar emblem of Wisdom. “

Readers’ Guide To The Mahatma Letters to A.P. Sinnett

Compiled and edited by George E. Linton (1903 – 1997) and Virginia Hanson (1898 – 1991).

430 Pages | First edition 1972, second edition 1988 | Softcover | The Theosophical House, Wheaton | ISBN: 8170591139.

The book entitled The Mahatma Letters to A.P. Sinnett, first published in 1923, was compiled and edited by Mr. A. Trevor Barker, an English Theosophist, from letters belonging to the estate of A.P. Sinnett, who died in 1921. The history of the publication is quite well covered in the Preface to the third edition and need not be repeated here.

A short time after the publication of this Volume, Mr. Barker published a second Volume, The Letters of H.P. Blavatsky to A.P. Sinnett, also from material left by Mr. Sinnett. This book contains valuable information and many intriguing clues to the relationship between H.P. Blavatsky and her Teachers, and to the less obvious aspects of the events surrounding the early struggles of the Theosophical Society.

Mr. Barker attempted to arrange The Mahatma Letters according to the subject matter under several different headings, but because of the nature of the letters this was only partially successful. Most of the time sequence was lost, and this lack of continuity made less comprehensible many passages of personal value. It is therefore strongly urged that, initially, the student read the letters in their chronological sequence. Once he has the narrative and history in mind, he can better understand the text if he wishes to study a particular topic. In addition to the metaphysical and technical teachings, the book is a veritable gold-mine of information on such matters as the ways of the Adepts, the training of Chelas for the probationary path, insights into character, and other profound subjects.

From Appendix D (p. 370):

” To begin with, reincarnation – if other world besides this are taken into account – is the regular routine of nature. But reincarnation in the next higher objective world is one thing: reincarnation on this earth is another. Even that takes place over and over again till the highest condition of humanity, as known on this earth, is attained, but not afterwards, and here is the clue to the mystery * * * “

You

By George Sydney Arundale (1878 – 1945).

278 Pages | First edition 1935, 2nd 1936, 3rd 1956, 4th 1996 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592682.

This book is a brief epitome of George S. Arundale’s Theosophy at its present stage of unfoldment, for though there are certain fundamental principles underlying the Science of Theosophy – possibly such as Arundale has ventured to indicate in the Envoi – at the end, each student should be gradually finding his own Theosophy for him – or herself, his or her own understanding of the Science of Living.

CONTENTS:

  1. You in General
  2. The Individual You
  3. Your Parents and Family
  4. Your Education
  5. Your Larger Family
  6. Your Circumstances and Surroundings
  7. Your Business and Your Leisure
  8. Your World in Peace and War
  9. You and Decision-Making
  10. You and Love
  11. You and Death
  12. You and a Mode of Transcendence
  13. You and Your Search for Beauty
  14. You, Theosophy and The Theosophical Society
  15. You and Your Goal; and Envoi.

From Chapter 11 – ‘You and Death’ (p. 165 & 166):

” A healthy-minded individual, with a minimum of that ignorance about death which is the cause of so much sorrow, will make friends with death, treat him as a colleague and helper, and give him sensible co-operation when at last he comes. And if ignorance has not been at work year after year erecting what it thinks to be formidable barriers against death, barriers which death so easily overcomes, then not only will death be less inclined to be tiresome, but, when he comes, he will feel at home as with a friend. We tend to summon death the more we seek to repel him. And death must smile to watch the frantic efforts we make to keep alive, when so often he would be able to offer a far more profitable condition than that, which we call life; which is but the shadow of a shade of life. What we have to do is to make death part of our scheme and plan of life. We must give him his due place in life, for he is a much life as that which we call life. He is called death only because he is a different kind of life. “

A New Covenant with Nature – Notes on the End of Civilization and the Renewal of Culture

227 Pages | First Quest Edition 1996 | Hardcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835607461.
  • Has modern civilization really improved human lives?
  • Is money evil?
  • Is government necessary?
  • What can we each do to renew our connection with all that is wild, and generative, and free?

In this radical and thought-provoking book, ecophilosopher Richard Heinberg explores these questions with wit, perception, and refreshing insight. Each culture, Heinberg shows, makes a covenant or agreement with nature. Our culture’s agreement is obviously crumbling. If we are to create a new covenant, we must begin by rethinking the givens of society from the ground up – or even, quietly desert the existing social system and help birth a better one.

From Part III – ‘The Great Purification’ (p. 163):

” To speak of wilderness is to speak of wholeness. Human beings came out of that wholeness, and to consider the possibility of reactivating membership in the Assembly of All Beings is in no way regressive. “ – Gary Snyder.

By Richard Heinberg, Foreword by Dolores LaChapelle.

199 Pages | A Quest Original 1993 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835606937.

Rejoice in the Seasonal Festivals of the Earth . . .

Seasonal festivals are not cultural relics. They are joyous, fun, mischievous, profound, life-affirming events that connect us deeply with the Earth, the heavens, and the wellspring of being within us. This engaging book tells the history and meaning of the Solstices, encourages the practice of full-bodied, ecstatic rituals of seasonal renewal, and gives practical suggestions for how to celebrate them in contemporary times.

  • Discover the ancient roots of Christmas-tide customs.
  • Honor the Goddess in all of her Names by celebrating the June Solstice as a Festival of the Divine Feminine.
  • Learn how cultures around the world honored their connectedness with the Earth rhythms.
  • Create life-affirming celebrations of the Solstices – alone, with friends or family, in the wilderness, or in the city.

From Chapter 3 – ‘The First Solstice Festivals’ (p.27):

” Each year, for about a week before and after the winter solstice, light from the rising Sun passes through a boxed slot above the doorway of Newgrange and shine the entire length of the corridor to the far wall of the central chamber (a distance of over eighty feet), illuminating a stone basin positioned below a series of intricate carvings of interlocked spirals, eye shapes, and rayed solar discs. For about seventeen minutes the inner sanctuaryis softly lit; then the finger of sunlight slowly creeps back across the stone floor, and darkness returns. The effect is stunning, and the effort spent to obtain it must have been enormous. “

The One Life and Functional Forms

By Dr. A. Kannan with a Foreword by V. Wallace Slater.

166 Pages | Published in 1973 | Hardcover | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 0835674983.

The aim of this book has been to survey man’s search for an understanding of the evolutionary process of life and consciousness through material forms; the ‘One Life’ through diversity of forms each having its particular function to perform. Both modern science and the ancient Wisdom tradition combine to give a broad perspective of life and form as two aspects of one reality. The popular world does not readily find a meaning to the fact that our planet is a speck in a universe of uncountable galaxies, nor to the random chemical mutations by which the human species has developed on this planet. This is because of the tendency to study life as a collection of separate problems, apart from the universal life principle as a comprehensive whole.

From Chapter 7 –Man and Nature – A Symbolic Representation of Unity’ (p. 135):

” The symbol of the circle gives a good deal of meaning to the movement and continuity aspects of evolution. In fact, a serpent swallowing its own tail is one such symbol, which in addition gives the idea of eternity and the destruction of old form giving place to new. However, the spiral which includes within itself the symbol of the circle gives a more vivid concept of the multi-dimensional organization of the various kingdoms of Nature. The several circles contained in the spiral reveal the idea of the various aspects of organization impulse working through the different kingdoms. “

Children of Infinity – The Religion, Legends and Gods of Pre-Christian Hawaii

By Leinani Melville.

183 Pages | Copyright 1969, third printing 1990 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835600025.

Long before the white man arrived in the new world, the people of Hawaii had developed a high culture, with many fascinating legends and myths concerning the people of MU. Many of these traditions had a deep spiritual meaning, which unfortunately became lost with the Christianizing of the islands. In this book, Leinani Melville writes of the esoteric code of the tahunas (priests) of Hawaii and recounts some of their traditional mythology. He received his instruction from an elderly Hawaiian woman, who he believed was a tahuna mataura (seer). She drew the sacred symbols on the sand and explained their meaning to him. Later, he learned to interpret the sacred chants and temple prayers, many of which contain concepts akin to the religions and folklore of other ancient cultures.

The author was a merchant sailor, who steeped himself in the pre-Christian culture of his native Hawaii. He tells with simplicity and beauty some of the teachings and beliefs of the religion of the MU. Written in popular form this book conveys the understanding and reverence, which the author feels for the traditions of his forefathers. The book contains 34 illustrations of sacred symbols of Hawaii, together with descriptions as to their significance.

From Chapter 3: ‘Tane, Our Father in Heaven’ (p. 15):

He Pure I O Tane E, Te Hatu O Havai”i (Prayer to Tane, Lord of Hawaii)

Hail! Tane, creator of the heavens,
The heavens of our ancestry,
The heavens of beneficence,
That shower this earth with blessings,
Hail! Father, hail!

Lord of Light, God of Might,
From Your Temple of the Sun in the blue of heaven –
Breath! Through the invisible spiritual channel
that links the mind of man with the Infinite
Mind of God –
Life! That floats in the living water of Your
Holy Breath,
Breathe health unto me, Your offspring.

Benevolent Man, who warms humanity,
Warm me with Your love.
Forgive, Oh Father, forgive my sins.
Liberate me from the transgressions of others.

O Spirit, dear God,
Sacred!

My prayer is ended.
Let Your blessings liberally descend. ”

Selected Studies in ‘The Secret Doctrine’

By Salomon Lancri, translated by Ianthe H. Hoskins.

86 Pages | The English translation was published in 1977 | Softcover | The Theosophical Publishing House Limited, London | ISBN: 0722950713.

French original: Introduction á l’Étude de ‘La Doctrine Secrète’ | Published in 1967 | Editions Adyar, Paris | ISBN: 9782850001420.

Theosophy, or Divine Wisdom, is a hidden science. It is also the ‘Science of the Hidden’. Its field is the invisible. It maintains that everything perceived by the senses has secret depth; the surface of objects, their ‘exterior horizon’, is but the boundary of a ‘darkness filled full with visibility‘, a phrase used by Maurice Merleau-Ponty (Le Visible et L’Invisible, 1964). This ‘second visibility’ makes it possible for those, who have developed the necessary psychic faculties to explore the occult dimension of the universe. It is this interior horizon of things, that is the object of Theosophical Investigation,

From the Foreword (p. 11):

” On close observation, you will find that it was never the intention of the Occultists really to conceal what they had been writing from the earnest determined students, but rather to lock up their information for safety-sake, in a secure safe-box, the key to which is – intuition. The degree of diligence and zeal with which the hidden meaning is sought by the student, is generally the test – how far he or she is entitled to the possession of the so buried treasure. ” – From: The Mahatma Letters to Alfred Percy Sinnett, p. 275.

Theosofia – Van Innerlijke Wijsheid naar Uiterlijke Transformatie

Joy Mills (1920 – 2015) Special Theosofia, hoofdredacteur Els Rijneker.

59 Bladzijden | Juni 2019 | Tijdschrift | Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | Geen ISBN.

The Voice of the Silence, An Insight into the Mystery and Purpose of our Life’.

The Yoga of the Christ – The Way to the Centre

By Ravi Ravindra.

316 Pages | First published in 1990, first reprint 2007 | Softcover | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170594472.

‘He, who is near me is near the fire, and he who is far from me is far from the Kingdom.’

The only reason that I, an outsider to the Christian tradition and not particularly learned in it, write about one of its most sacred texts is because of my love for it. The first time, I encountered it, I was much moved by The Gospel According to St. John. Since then I have read this Gospel many times. Always it leaves me in an uplifted internal state: I feel myself called by a mysterious and higher voice.

In our contemporary pluralistic world, where a cross-cultural communication has increasingly become a matter of necessity for global survival, a new consciousness is emerging. One of the major features of this new consciousness is a non-sectarian spirituality. A universal spirituality is at the very root of all traditions, but it is continually lost in theological exclusivism, or in scholastic partiality, or in evangelical enthusiasm, and it needs to be rediscovered and restated anew again and again. Anybody, who would approach a major work of a religious tradition with a global perspective, and with an effort to discover the universal truths in it, will aid the development of the new consciousness in the right direction.

From Chapter 21 – ‘A New Beginning’ (p. 297):

” Each one of us must begin anew, perhaps again and again, if we wish to come to the deathless Beginning. Jesus Christ said. in a non-canonical saying found on some papyri discovered in Oxyrhynchus in Egypt at the end of the nineteenth century: ‘Let not him, who seeks cease until he finds, and when he finds he shall be astonished. Astonished he shall reach the Kingdom, and having reached the Kingdom, he shall rest. “

ProcessMind – A User’s Guide to Connecting with the Mind of God

By Arnold Mindell PhD.

303 Pages | First Quest Edition 2010 | Softcover | Quest Books U.S.A. | ISBN: 9780835608862.

‘ I want to know God’s thoughts, the rest are details’ – Albert Einstein.

Arnold Mindell’s term for what Einstein called ‘God’s thoughts’ is processmind, meaning an experience of an all-pervasive state of consciousness. We can all access it, he says it is perhaps our least known and greatest power. He uniquely connects modern physics, transpersonal psychology, and world spiritual traditions and provides exercises to actualize our deepest, unitive consciousness. In all, the book helps us tap into an immense power that can benefit our own lives and, ultimately, the world.

From the Conclusion (p. 242):

‘ We need an ethics, that includes but goes beyond ‘doing good’. The process I call ‘entangled co-creation’ is such a new ethics. In small and very large groups, it can turn an apparent clash of civilizations into a community experience, where just about everyone feels heard and at home. When you dance in that entanglement theater, you feel new changes unfolding that you did not believe could ever happen. At first the change may be the appearance of a tiny bright smile brightening the face of an ‘opponent’. Something touched her or him. Then, in spite of yourself, your face, too, may begin to glow a little. These brighter faces are the change that is needed. They are the flash of lightning from the dark night’s sky. These are the faces that lead us into the future. When you see them, you can understand why I call this book ‘Processmind: A User’s Guide to Connecting with the Mind of God’. ”

The Science of the Sacraments

By Charles Webster Leadbeater (1854 – 1934).

630 Pages | First edition 1920, 10th reprint 1997 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592968.

The Science of Sacraments can be defined as ‘a new idea of Church worship’, for it presents a clairvoyant description of the inner or invisible side of the traditional Catholic rites. The central theme of the book is that a sacrament is ‘an outer and visible sign of an inner, spiritual grace‘. The author examines the far-reaching effect of ceremonies like the Holy Eucharist, which benefit not only those attending, but also the community at large with its strong radiance of peace.

The Rt. Revd Charles Webster Leadbeater was acclaimed as one of the great clairvoyants in this century. He wrote many books including The Chakras, Man Visible and Invisible, The Hidden Side of Things and Thought Forms (with Annie Besant). He was for a number of years Presiding Bishop of the Liberal Catholic Church, which seeks to combine the preservation of the Catholic sacraments with the widest measure of freedom of thought and interpretation of the Scriptures.

From the Appendix (p. 608):

” Do not believe in a thing said merely because it is said; nor in traditions because they have been handed down from antiquity; nor in rumours, as such; nor in writings by sages, merely because they have been handed down from antiquity; nor in rumours, as such; nor in writings by sages, merely because sages wrote them; nor in fancies that you may suspect to have been inspired in you by an Angel (that is, in presumed spiritual inspiration); nor in inferences drawn from some haphazard assumption you may have made; nor because of what seems an analogical necessity; nor on the mere authority of your own teachers or masters. But we are to believe when the writing, doctrine or saying is corroborated by our own reason and consciousness. For this I have taught you, not to believe merely because you have heard; but when you believe of your own consciousness, then to act accordingly and abundantly. ”  – Kalama Sutta of the Anguttara Nikaya.

‘ Somewhere in the celestial palace of the dancing god Indra, there hangs a fabulous net, that spreads out boundlessly over the cosmos in every direction. The divine craftsman has so cleverly fashioned this net that at every knot there hangs a dazzling jewel, each one so brilliantly polished, that it reflects all the others. As Above, so Below . . . ‘

This image of Indra’s net from a Buddhist Sutra symbolizes the Mystery, that, through our own transformation, each of us is united with everyone and everything else. Author Robin Robertson finds parallel models in ancient Alchemy, which tried to change base metal into gold, and modern chaos theory, which posits that tiny initial changes can have huge and unexpected outcomes – as a butterfly in Brazil might cause a tornado in Texas. Robinson lucidly shows how these two systems reveal the pattern of inner development in any spiritual tradition. No matter what one’s particular calling, these surprising insights can enrich and accelerate the transformative stages of any spiritual seeker.

From Chapter 6  – ‘The Philosopher’s Stone’:

” Central to this book is the understanding that the Opus is within us as much as it is without. As I mentioned in the Introduction, Buddhist philosophy captures this relationship between the world and the psyche through the image of Indra’s net: a vast necklace of shining jewels, all interconnected. It is told thus in the Avatamsaka Sutra:

Far away in the heavenly abode of the great God Indra, there is a wonderful net, which has been hung by some cunning artificer in such a manner that it stretches out infinitely in all directions. In accordance with the extravagant tastes of deities, the artificer has hung a single glittering jewel in each ‘eye’ of the net, and since the net itself is infinite in dimension, the jewels are infinite in number. There hang the Jewels, glittering like stars in the first magnitude, a wonderful sight to behold. If we now arbitrarily select one of these jewels for inspection and look closely at it, we will discover that in its polished surface there are reflected all the other jewels in the net, infinite in number. Not only that, but each of the jewels reflected in this one jewel is also reflecting all the other jewels, so that there is an infinite reflecting process ocurring. “

Inwijding – Priesteres in Egypte

Door Elisabeth Haich (1897 – 1994), vertaling dra. C. Keus.

To Be and How to Be

By Peggy Rubin.

287 Pages | First Quest Edition 2010 | Softcover | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN:  9780835608534.

‘ The play of life is a daring adventure. Live it for all it’s worth and say yes! No matter what . . .

So says author and popular Sacred Theatre workshop leader Peggy Rubin. Drawing on decades of experience, she helps us take the leading role in our own life by tapping into the nine powers of the theatre, including Story, Expression, Point of View, Conflict and Celebration. With imaginative exercises throughout, her long-awaited book is fun, profound, and exuberantly transformative!

From the ‘Prologue’ (p. 2):

” This book uses the traditional theatre as a metaphor for framing and living life. I think of it as a dialogue between us. We will be talking about how actors work as they prepare and play their roles and how their training can provide ways for us all to live more buoyantly. First, may I share some thoughts about how I believe the theatre began as a sacred act, how your life is a sacred art form, and why I call what we are doing together Sacred Theatre.

Let us return to the ancient firelight and our ancestor’s celebration over the roasting meat. We can imagine the excitement as the first actor rises to enact the story of the hunt; we can almost hear the accompanying sounds and feel his listener’s enormous gratitude for the animal that gave its life to provide protein and also gave them this reason to celebrate – and, incidentally, to invent the theatre. “

Breathe into Being – Awakening to Who You Really Are

By Dennis Lewis.

115 Pages | First Quest Edition 2009 | Softcover | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 9780835608725.

Welcome to Breathe into Being, a book that can help you awaken to who and what you really are through the miracle of the breath as it manifests now in your body. Most books on breathing explain how and why you should work with your breath to improve your health, increase your energy or obtain some spiritual goal – all in the future. Most books on presence explain that there is really nothing to do to be who you really are except perhaps to open your eyes right now and see that you have always been what you have been searching for.

Of course, there are books on breathing that discuss the importance of presence and books on presence, that discuss the importance of breathing. There are very few (if any) contemporary books, however, that explore the depths to which breathing itself, natural breathing, is a portal to presence, an ever-present gateway to Awakening to and Being Who you Really Are.

From Chapter: ‘We Can Only Find Meaning and Happiness Now and Here’ (p. 24 & p. 25):

” Of course, not all of us want to go through this process of tranformation. Many of us are quite content to live with our beliefs and our ways of viewing ourselves and the world. So here, before we go on, I suggest you take some time to look into your heart and mind and ponder what it is that, beneath all your fleeting desires, you really want. A big help in this process would be to put it into words and write these words down. After you have written them down, it may be helpful to put one hand on your belly and the other on your heart and follow your breathing for a few minutes, letting yourself become one with it. Then look closely at the words again and see if they resonate with what you actually feel. Are the words true? Is what you wrote down what you really want? What do you really want? Try writing what you really want again in a more honest way. “

The Causal Body and the Ego

By Arthur E. Powell (1882 – 1969).

355 Pages | First published in 1928, second edition, second reprint 2016 | Softcover | The Theosophical House, Adyar | ISBN: 9788170594239.

The causal body is the vehicle of the immortal principle of a human being, the Ego, which survives the death and disintegration of the lower bodies – physical, astral and mental. It acts as a receptacle for the essence of a human being’s experiences and lessons in various incarnations. In the causal body also lies the creative power of meditation.

This classic work by Colonel Arthur E. Powell is part of a series of books seeking to provide a condensed synthesis of the considerable literature given by well-known Theosophical writers. Other books in the series are: The Etheric Double – The Health Aura, The Astral Body and Other Astral Phenomena, The Mental Body and The Solar System.

From Chapter XV – ‘Functions of the Causal Body’ (p. 89):

” The causal body owes its name to the fact that in it reside the causes, which manifest themselves as effects in the lower planes. For it is the experiences of past lives, stored in the causal body, which are the cause of the general attitude taken up towards life, and the actions undertaken. In Sanskrit, the causal body is known as the Kārana Sharira, Kārana meaning ‘cause’. Briefly, we may say that the causal body has two main functions:

  1. To act as a vehicle for the Ego: the causal body is the ‘body of Manas’, the form-aspect of the individual, the true man, the Thinker.

  2. To act as a receptacle or storehouse for the essence of the man’s experiences in his various incarnations. The causal body is that into, which is woven everything, which can endure, and in which are stored the germs of qualities, to be carried over to the next incarnation. Hence, one sees that the lower manifestation of the man, i.e. his expression in his mental, astral and physical bodies, depends ultimately upon the growth and development of the real man himself, the one ‘for whom the hour never strikes’. “

The Mind of Adi Shankaracharya

By Y. Keshava Menon.

121 Pages | Published in 1976 | Jaico Publishing House, India | No ISBN.

On the intellectual level, Indian philosophy is logical and rational and proceeds on the same kind of axioms, overt or implied, as Western philosophy. Shankara was one of the most subtle of Indian philosophers, and though for him intellectual dexterity was not an end in itself, the reader will find some reasoning worthy of his steel in the following pages. Equally, however, it would be an error to bring to Shankara the same spirit of mesmerised reverance that many Christians bring to the Elizabeth English of the Authorised Version of the Bible. Reverence and blind faith are also not enough. Perhaps the most helpful thing that can be said is that the reader who wants to get the best out of Shankara should approach him with a cool, constructively critical mind, but determined to study philosophy as a whole and not to reject conclusions out of hand. There is ratiocination in plenty for him, but if he is not prepared to test the philosophy for himself, he would have gained little from Shankara.

From the Introduction (p. VII):

” Though he is considered one of the foremost of India’s philosophers, Shankara is also one of the most misunderstood. We have heard fire-eating revolutionaries advance the theory that the essence of Shankara philosophy is on all fours with the materialistic interpretation of life formulated by Hegel, on which is built the edifice of Marxism. Pandit Jawarharlal Nehru, in the course of his record of the cultural history of the world, testifies to Shankara’s merits as an outstanding Shaivite. In his own time, Shankara was hailed as Shanmathatshapanacharya (founder of six faiths). Obviously, all of them cannot very well be right. Much of the misunderstanding of Shankara’s position may be due to the absence of a lucid presentation of his life and works in a comprehensive and readable form. This short monograph is an attempt to meet that need for the benefit of those, who have no previous acquaintance with philosophy. “

Hidden Wisdom in the Holy Bible – Volume I (Abridgement)

By Geoffrey Hodson (1886 – 1983).

214 Pages | A Quest Original 1993, an abridgement of the Theosophical classic | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835606902.

Geoffrey Hodson uncovers new meaning in the Holy Bible in this revised edition of a Theosophical classic. Many biblical stories are allegorical and were never meant to be taken literally, according to the author. This first volume of a two-volume abridgement  of Hodson’s monumental work explains and illustrates:

  • How a literal reading of the Bible misses rich meaning concealed in the stories.
  • How biblical symbols were used to encode esoteric truths.
  • How the parable of the Prodigal Son illustrates the Soul’s cycle of forthgoing and return.
  • How the life of Christ can be viewed as an initiatory journey.

Geoffrey Hodson was an internationally-known clairvoyant, who spent much of his life as a lecturer for the Theosophical Society. He is the author of The Brotherhood of Angels and Men, The Call to the Heights, and Clairvoyant Investigations.

From Chapter 6 – ‘The Reality behind the Shadow (p. 52):

” The Bible is found to be capable of many interpretations, wisdom being concealed within it layer upon layer. The outer layer is pseudohistory, local and temporal. The inner layers consist of universal eternal truths. Among the earliest people there moved men and women, who were not less informed than ourselves concerning the mysteries of life, but more so. They had been drawn near to the Adept teachers and had been received by them as Initiates of the Greater Mysteries. These are the inspired authors of the world’s scriptures, cosmogonical and esoteric legends, and myths. They saw outer, temporal events, beings and  and things as mirrors of eternal verities.

Egyptian practice may provide us with an illustration. In that country the scarab beetle was intimately associated with the creative Deity, one of whose titles was Khepera. Why this association of a lowly insect with the creative Lord of all? The life habits of the scarab suggest an answer, This beetle encloses its egg, its seed of life, in a ball of mud, rolls the ball to a sunny spot and leaves it to the warming, hatching influence of the sun. Ultimately, the egg hatches and brings forth a larva, which finds itself surrounded by its necessary food. Consuming this, it passed through its transformations and ultimately emerges as the winged scarab beetle to become in its turn a parent of further eggs.  The creative Logos produces from within itself the seed-thought of the universe-to-be . . . “

Human Regeneration – Lectures and Discussions

By Radha S. Burnier (1923 – 2013).

154 Pages | Published in 1990, Adyar Edition Reprint 2006 | Hardcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland, Amsterdam | ISBN: 8170594995.

Dutch translation: Regeneratie van de Mens – Lezingen en Discussies | Uitgegeven in 1994 | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland, Amsterdam | ISBN: 9061750695.

Theosophists are all united by a common devotion to the Regeneration of Man. They may differ in their convictions or approach. The teachings of Buddha, Jesus, Blavatsky, Besant, Krishnamurti or some other teacher may inspire some and not others. But there is a strong common bond, namely profound concern for the progress and perfection of humanity, not merely at the material and intellectual levels, but morally and spiritually.

A Theosophist does not seek wisdom to benefit him or herself. ‘Not for him/herself but for the world he or she lives’. And the more deeply devotion is directed at the regeneration of mankind, the more ardently the understanding of self and the world and the penetration into the secret of life. Aim is to discover the source of Goodness and Happiness within, which is the birthright of all living beings.

From Chapter 3 – ‘Regeneration and the Objects of the Theosophical Society’ (p. 91):

” From a pratical view: does not Brotherhood begin with simple things? Just being oridnarily kind, beginning to think in terms of another person, instead of only ourselves. We like to enjoy ourselves, but somebody else has to work. Are we prepared to sacrifice a little of our enjoyment to help the person, who is working? Brotherhood begins like that. But when we are brotherly and kind in the ordinary sense of the word, still the feeling of difference from others does not go – one remains in a world of duality. So we must continue practising Brotherhood, until the tendency of the mind to see in terms of duality disappears. Even the word ‘Brotherhood’ suggests, that there is a brother and ‘myself’. “

Illusie en Werkelijkheid

Door Dr. Jacobus Johannes van der Leeuw (1893 – 1934).

237 Pagina’s | Uitgegeven in 2011 | Softcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 9789061758013.

Engels origineel: The Conquest of Illusion | Uitgegeven in 1928, herdruk door Kessinger Publications 2010 | LL.D., Alfred A. Knopf, New York and London | ISBN: 9781161388084.

Waarin alle mensen geloofden en waarop zij hun hoop hadden gevestigd, wordt opzij getrokken;

Venus is geen Vamp – Het Vrouwbeeld in 35.000 Jaar Venuskunst

Door Annine van der Meer.

456 Pages | Uitgegeven in 2009 | Softcover | Academie PanSophia i.s.m. A3 Boeken, Geesteren | ISBN: 9789077408674.

Buddhism and Hinduism

By Henry Steel Olcott (1832 – 1907) and Anagārika Dharmapāla (1864 – 1934), edited by Venerable Dr. D. Rewatha Thero, General Secretary of the Maha Bodhi Society of India.

68 Pages | Published in 1996 | Softcover | Sattanam Printing Press, Varanasi | No ISBN.

In the recent times, some have shown interest in uniting, coming together of the Buddhist and the Hindus. ‘Truth’ has got to be stated in different terms, different codes of conduct need to be laid down for beings standing on different rungs of the evolutionairy ladder. No great Teacher ‘founded’ any religion. The term ‘religion’ is no good a translation of ‘Dharma’. It is the followers, who crystallized the sublime teachings into concepts, precepts and doctrines. Some went further to create dogmas and tried to impose them on others. Later, the priestcraft, as distinct from the true sannyasis, the true Bhikkhus, exploited the ignorant.

The path that one can follow depends to a large extent on the point, where one stands. For, the goal, if there be a goal, is a far distant horizon, unknown and unknowable to a mind full of limitations and self-created contradictions.

From page 17:

” For the first time in the history of the world, Buddha proclaimed a salvation, which each man could gain for himself and by himself in this world during this life, without the least help from personal God or Gods. He strongly inculcated the doctrine of self-reliance, of purity, of courtesy, of enlightenment of peace and of universal love. He strongly urged the necessity of knowledge, for without the wisdom the psychic insight could not be got in this life. Desire not to be born re-born again and again; nor for a cessation of existence in this one life; desire not for the enjoyment of sensuality. Lead a life of purity, seek only the fruits of the Fourfold Path of Holiness, which lead to Nirvana. These were the teachings of the Buddha. “
