In Memory of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky – By Some of Her Pupils

By Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891).

198 Pages | Original Edition 1891, Death Centenary Edition 1991 | Softcover | Theosophy Company Private LTD., India | ISBN: 817059037X.

PREFACE

The articles on Helena Petrovna Blavatsky that appeared in the monthly magazine ‘Lucifer’, after her death in 1891, were published the same year in a Memorial Volume. In 1931, to commemorate the centenary of her birth, a reprint of that book, with some additional material, was published by The Blavatsky Association of London.

Both the earlier editions have long been 0ut of print. The present photo-offset reprint is being published in the year of the hundredth anniversary of her passing as a tribute to this greatest Theosophist of our age.

THE PUBLISHERS.

Bombay, 8th May 1991.

From page XI:

” The inspiration given by Madame Blavatsky has indeed been incalculable in regard to this inborn desire and determination to find the PATH, and to attain, at whatever cost, the realisation of the true SELF. For she showed, as has been shown from time immemorial, that the WAY lies within; that each man has the power to work out his own salvation without the intervention of any deity other than his own highest SELF. In the Doctrines of Reincarnation and Karma with which Madame Blavatsky familiarised the West, are to be found the arbiters of Man’s fate – wholly just, yet, when rightly understood, wholly merciful, and the ultimate appeasers of mortal sorrow. “

H.P.B. Speaks – Volume 2

By Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891), edited by Curuppumullage Jinarājadāsa (1875–1953)

181 Pages | First edition 1951, reprint 1986 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 817059037X.

It is a strange series of events that letters written by H.P.B. to a friend of her youth, Prince Alexander Mihailovich Dondukov-Korsakoff – some of them written from the Adyar Headquarters – should finally find their resting place in the Archives of the Theosophical Society in Adyar.

From page 16:

” My dear prince, you are interested in my life? Yes, you are right, for never has one of your compatriots been led by his mocking destiny into more original and unexpected situations than I have; situations both terrible and grotesque; heights and depths; one day on the level of the stars beyond the solar system, the next day in bottomless abysses. Such is my life and my fate that stake on my rise and fall like drunken stock-brokers. I am now on the rise and by God I will remain there even though I should be obliged to allow my army of Theosophists to crown me Queen-Prophet of Ceylon or Assam- and this under the very nose of the English, of whom half in India adore me and the other half detest me! “

H.P.B. Speaks – Volume 1

By Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891), edited by Curuppumullage Jinarājadāsa (1875–1953)

248 Pages | First edition 1950, reprint 1986 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170590361.

There exist in the Archives of the Theosophical Society at Adyar certain manuscripts of H.P.B. Among them all, the most interesting historically is her Diary for 1878, which is published in this work. Furthermore, letters written by H.P. Blavatsky  from 1875 onwards and some extracts from Scrapbook No. 1. are included.

From page 105:

” That I was called Heliona (not Helen as people call me) – a Greek name derived from that of the Sun-Helios- because (1st) there was an eclipse of the luminary on that day, who knew prophetically, one must infer, that it would be eclipsed for long years by the newly born babe, and also (2nd) because of the possibility it gave the clergy and missionaries of the 19th century to spell it with a double ‘ll’ (thus – Helliona) and assure the more readily their congregations that I was an imp of Hell . . . “

Drie Wegen, Eén Pad

Door Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895 – 1986), Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891) en Mabel Collins (1851 – 1927), vertaald door Louis Geertman en Ali Ritsema.

223 Pagina’s | Eerste druk 2006 | Hardcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 9061750881.

English edition: Inspirations from Ancient Wisdom: At the Feet of the Master, Light on the Path, the Voice of the Silence | published in 1999 | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 978-0835607735.

LIEFDE

” Wachtend op het Woord van de Meester,

Uitziend naar het Verborgen Licht;

Luisterend om zijn bevelen op te vangen

In het heetst van de strijd;

Zijn kleinste teken ziend

Over de hoofden van het gewoel;

Zijn zwakste fluistering horend

Boven het luidste aardse gezang. “

De Sleutel tot de Theosofie

H.P. Blavatsky

402 blz. | Paperback | Theosophical University Press, 1998 ISBN 9789070328207

A Modern Panarion – A Collection of Fugitive Fragments

By Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891).

504 Pages | A facsimile of the original edition of 1895 | Hardcover | The Theosophical Company, USA. | ISBN: 0938998226.

The title A Modern Panarion has been taken from the controversial Panarion of the Church Father Epiphanius, in which he attacked the various sects and heresies of the first four centuries of the Christian era. The Panarion was so called as being a ‘basket’ of scraps and fragments. We are told. that this Panarion was ‘ a kind of medicine chest, in which he had collected means of healing against the poisonous bite of the heretical serpent. ‘ A Modern Panarion is of a like nature with the intent of the Christian Father; only in the nineteenth century, heresy has in many instances become orthodoxy, and orthodoxy heresy, and the Panarion of H.P. Blavatsky is intended as a means of healing against the terrors of ecclesiasticism, dogma and bigotry, and the blind negation of materialism and pseudo-science.

Zoroastrianism

By Annie Besant (1847 – 1933).

44 Pages | First edition 1963, second edition 2005 | Paperback | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170594685.

Annie Besant (1847 – 1933), second President of the Theosophical Society (1907 – 1933) was described as a ‘Diamond Soul’, for she had many brilliant facets to her character. She was an outstanding orator of her time, a champion of human freedom, educationist, philanthropist and author with more than three hundred books and pamphlets to her credit. She also guided thousands of men and women all over the world in their spiritual quest.

In 1896, Dr. Annie Besant gave four Convention Lectures on Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, Buddhism and Chrisitianity at Adyar, Madras, on the twenty-first anniversary of the Theosophical Society, the President-Founder, Colonel Henry Steel Olcott (1832 – 1907), being in the Chair. In 1901, she continued the series with another four lectures on Islam, Jainism, Sikhism and Theosophy or ‘Divine Wisdom’ as the common source of all religions at the twenty-sixth anniversary, Colonel Olcott again presiding. Each of the lectures on the seven religions has been published as a separate booklet with the exception of the lecture on Divine Wisdom, and the whole series as a single volume under the title Seven Great Religions.

From page 37:

” Zarathustra gave the words of power that could call down the fire down from above, and century after century, the fire that blazed on the Zoroastrian altar in the fire-temple was no mere mingling of material flames. The sacred fire was called down from fiery ākāśa; at the word of the priest, it fell upon the altar, and blazed there as the living symbol of God. When the lower priesthood had to act (when the higher one was not available), they were given the rod, in which the living flame or fire was ever flashing, and, as when they touched the altar fuel with it, the heavenly fire blazed forth. “

The Universal Wisdom Tradition and the Theosophical Society

By Annie Besant (1847 – 1933).

29 Pages | 6th Reprint | Pamphlet | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8179593492.

Every great religion has two parts, an inner and an outer, a spirit and a body, the ‘knowledge of God’, which is ‘Eternal Life’ and its dogmas, rites and ceremonies. The inner part, ‘the wisdom of God in a mystery’, spoken of by St. Paul as known to ‘the perfect’, is that which has, since the third century, been known in the West as Theosophy: in the East as Brahmā-vidyā, God-Wisdom, God-Knowledge or God-Science. Such Theosophy, or mysticism, the direct knowledge of God by man, belongs equally to all the great religions as their sustaining life. And it may be possessed by any individual, even outside any religious organization.

NB: This pamphlet was previously printed under the title of Theosophy and The Theosophical Society (1931, 1952 & 1985) as an excerpt from a larger work of that title by Annie Besant. The title has been changed to avoid confusion between the two works.

49 pages | 2005 | Paperback | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar

” Annie Besant s words strike at the very heart of the human problem : the need to realize and to live in accordance with the realization that all life is ONE.

These two lectures, delivered at the Chicago World Parliament of Religions 1893 by Annie Besant, are printed here with brief, historical comments by Joy Mills in a Preface, where she says : ‘In these, we may find both practical suggestions for a mode of living consonant with Theosophical ideals and inspiration to act in such a manner as may bring about that global Transformation which signals the dawning of the “Brotherhood” enunciated in the First Object of the Theosophical Society.

Thought Power – Its Control and Culture

By Annie Besant (1847 – 1933).

138 Pages |; 2nd edition 2016| Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 9788170591542.

(Also Published in 1988 by Quest, Wheaton).

(A twenty-first century adaptation of Annie Besant’s classic work Thought Power was issued in 2001 by John Algeo and Shirley J. Nicholson and published by Quest).

At the world level, we assess our ability, strength, or power before embarking upon a new venture. At the higher level, the value of knowledge is tested by its power to purify and ennoble one’s life, and by its application to the evolution of one’s character. This book helps to understand better one’s intellectual nature in order to cultivate the good in it, and allow the One Self to be the Knower. The oneness of the Self is not easy to comprehend, but the author asserts that ‘those, who would fulfil the maxim ‘Know thyself’ must not shrink from a little mental exertion, nor must expect mental food to drop ready-cooked from the sky into a lazily-opened mouth’.

Subjects discussed are:

  • Training the mind
  • Improving concentration
  • Strengthening thought power
  • Meditation
  • Improving memory
  • Thought transference
  • Building the mental body
  • Combining thoughts with others
  • Achieving peace of mind.

From Chapter VIII – ‘Obstacles to Concentration; Wandering Minds’ (p. 104):

” The concentrated intelligence, the power of withdrawing outside the turmoil, mean immensely increased energy in work, mean steadiness, self-control, serenity; the man of meditation is the man, who wastes no time, scatters no energy, misses no opportunity. Such a man governs the events, because within him is the power whereof events are only the outer expression; he shares the divine life, and therefore shares divine power. “

Thought Forms

By Annie Besant (1847 – 1933).

77 Pages | First edition 1901, second edition, fourth reprint, 2015 | Hardcover, incl. illustrations | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 9788170592020.

Hardly a moment of our waking life passes without thoughts. Are thoughts material? What do they look like? We assume, that being silent and unnoticed by others, ideas and thoughts are insignificant, but each one of them is that much of an unique power, positive or negative for us or others in the measure of its quality and intensity. This is clearly brought out in this publication – first published in 1901 – with the aid of many vivid coloured plates and graphic drawings conveying the power of thought.

The Spiritual Life

Illuminating the Path

The key to living spiritually in the modern world, says this classic writer, “depends upon one’s attitude.” The principles Besant set forth over 70 years ago are no different today. She shows that the value of the spiritual path is not in the goal but in the striving, and offers clear principles for those with the courage to try.

The Seven Principles of Man

By Annie Besant (1847 – 1933).

111 Pages | First Adyar Edition, 12th reprint 2015 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 9788170590972.

This book is the first in a series of manuals intended to meet the need for a simple exposition of Theosophy. It describes in clear terms the seven aspects of man’s nature based on theosophical precepts. Its aim is to lead the casual enquirer to a deeper study of the philosophy, science and religion of Theosophy and ultimately to a realization of the central objective of the Society, the Brotherhood of man and the possibility of spiritual growth.

From page 2:

” Man, according to the Theosophical teachings, is a sevenfold being, or, in the usual phrase, has a septenary constitution. Putting it in another way, man’s nature has seven aspects, may be studied from seven different points of view, is composed of seven principles. The clearest and best way of all in which to think of man is to regard him as one, the Spirit or true Self; this belongs to the highest region of the universe, and is universal, the same for all: it is a ray of God, a spark from the divine fire. This is to become an individual, reflecting the divine perfection, a son that grows into the likeness of his father. “

From Chapter: ‘The Elder Brothers’ (p. 58/59).

” The Supreme Teacher is the ever-living Presence who over-shadows and inspire the world faiths, who founds them, as they are needed for human guidance, and who, through His Helpers among the ranks of Adepts, guides each religion so far as is permitted by the stubbornness and ignorance of men. The Nature of Memory

71 pages | Paperback | Theosophical Publishing House Adyar, 2002

‘MEMORY is but a function of the mind, and the answer given to the question, ‘What is memory?’ must turn on the answer given to the larger question, ‘What is mind?’ ‘Is there a Self or Ego, of which mind, as we know it, is a part; or is mind only the outcome of matter in motion, so that the Self has no real existence? Is mind anything more than an ever changing succession of perceptions and congeries of perceptions, and these the outcome of nervous activity responding to stimuli, peripheral and central? Or is it a definite mode of being, with perceptions et hoc genus omne as material on which it works; with faculties whereby it perceives, reproduces, recollects, conceives; but no more as a whole to be identified with its functional activities than the body as a whole consists of eating, breathing or digesting?’

Men, who do not know, work to gain wealth and power, but these are at most for one life only, and therefore unreal. There are greater things than these – things which are real and lasting; when you have once seen these, you desire those others no more.. ” –

Sanatana-Dharma, An Advanced Text-book of Hindu Religion and Ethics

268 pages | Gebonden/Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House Adyar, 2000

The wisdom of inspired Seers is recorded in various Samhitas, Sutras, Smrtis and other fragments. The corpus of all these is Sanatana Dharma, Eternal Order of Dharma. Through millennia, Hindu society was moulded by it. Though necessarily Indian in garb, its principles have a timeless relevance to any society, anywhere, any time.

It is striking that the first ever serious attempt at drawing from the vast, nebulous, scattered sources the principles of Sanatana Dharma and codifying them was left to Annie Besant, foreign by birth, but more truly Indian than an Indian could be. In compiling this brilliant work, she was ably assisted by a team of eminent Sanskrit scholars headed by no less a savant than Bharata Ratna, Dr Bhagavan Das.

A reading of this book is in itself a liberal education.

Annie Besant, President of the Theosophical Society from 107 to 1933, was described as a ‘Diamond Soul’ for she had many brilliant facets to her character. As a spiritual teacher she inspired thousands of men and women all over the world. She was an outstanding orator of her time, a champion of human freedom, educationist, philanthropist and author with more than three hundred books and pamphlets to her credit. From 1893, she lived in India and worked indefatigably for the cultural and spiritual renaissance of the country. She organized the Home Rule movement and inspired Indian with a dynamic vision of India’s future. The keynote of all her varied activities was her unswerving loyalty to Truth. To quote her own words: She (Truth) may lead me into the wilderness, yet I must follow her; she may strip me of all love, yet I must pursue her; though she slay me, yet will I trust in her; and I ask no other epitaph on my tomb but ‘She tried to follow ‘Truth’.

Reïncarnation

By Annie Besant (1847 – 1933).

95 Pages | First edition 1892, twelfth reprint 1999 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592348.

From the Preface:

” Few words are needed in sending this little book out into the world. It is a Manual designed to meet the public demand for a simple exposition of Theosophical teachings. Some have complained that our literature is at once too abstruse, too technical, and too expensive for the ordinary reader, and it is our hope that the present series may succeed in supplying what is a very real want. Theosophy is not only for the learned; it is for all. Perhaps among those who in these little books catch their first glimpse of its teachings, there may be a few who will be led by them to penetrate more deeply into its philosophy, its science, and its religion, facing its abstruser problems with the student’s zeal and the neophyte’s ardour.

But these Manuals are not written for the eager student, whom no initial difficulties can daunt; they are written for the busy men and women of the work-a-day world, and seek to make plain some of the great Truths that render life easier to bear and death easier to face. Written by servants of the Masters who are Elder Brothers of our race, they can have no other object than to serve our fellow-men. “

From Chapter II – Youth and Marriage (p. 20):

” KING DAŚARATHA, it is written, ‘dwelt in Ayodhyā happily, expecting sons’, and the whole world was waiting with him, for Vishnu was coming in human form to this earth. Occultism, Semi-Occultism and Pseudo-Occultism

By Annie Besant (1847 – 1933).

36 Pages | First edition, first reprint 2005 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592232.

A clear exposition is given here of the nature of occultism by one, who was herself a distinguished occultist. Occultism is not the pratice of magic and the occult arts, which in fact is pseudo-occultism. It is at best a waste of time, at worst an obstacle to spiritual progress. Neither is Occultism an intellectual view of spiritual reality, and the path to it. This is semi-occultism. The divisible tendencies of the intellect must be transcended to realize the ‘One Reality’. However, semi-0ccultism can be a stepping stone to the truth. True Occultism is the study of the Divine Mind working in the universe. It calls for perception beyond forms into the inner Reality and involves conquest of the selfish urges and development of the spiritual nature.

From Page 35:

” As the very life of God in manifestation is a life, that gives everything and asks nothing back, so those who would reach unity with Him and realize what the spiritual life means, must learn to give and not to take, to help and not to hold, to pour out without seeking or looking for return. Only as we learn that do we become fit candidates for the higher knowledge, only as the heart is thus rendered absolutely pure may we dare to face the presence of the Master, hoping thar when ‘He looks at the heart He may find no stain therein. “

Man and His Bodies

166 Pages | Second edition, 2nd reprint, 2015 | Hard cover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar

This book attempts a simple exposition of Theosophical Teachings. It is a manual, which seeks to make plain some of the great Truths, that render life easier to bear and death easier to face. The first step, it is said, is to realize that we are not our body. We have bodies.

Once the distinction between the self (the human being) and our bodies is accepted, the study of the various bodies proceeds smoothly. The study concludes that the bodies are our instruments, our servants, adapting to our various needs and growing powers. Ultimately, we go beyond our bodies and realize our ´true Self´, in ourselves as also in others.

Karma

By Annie Besant (1847 – 1933)

82 pages | Second edition 2016 | Paperback | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 9788170595908.

In response to public demand for a simple exposition of theosophical teachings, Annie Besant designed a set of seven Theosophical Manuals, and Karma is the fourth in that series. These were written for the busy men and women of the workday world, rather than the undaunted eager student, and seek to make plain and lucid some of the eternal truths, that render life easier to bear and death easier to face.

According to Master KH:

” Every thought of man upon being evolved . . . becomes . . . an active Intelligence for a longer or shorter periode proportionate with the original intensity of the cerebral action which generated it . . . Man is continually peopling his current in space with a world of his own . . . a current which reacts upon any sensitive or nervous organization, which comes in contact with it, in proportion to its dynamic intensity . . . [This is given] the name of ‘Karma’. The Adept evolves these shapes consciously; other men throw them off unconsciously. “

In the Outer Court

By Annie Besant (1847 – 1933).

160 Pages | Second edition, 2017 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170595037.

Spirituality never ages. This little volume contains lectures held in 1895, but which are as relevant today as then, if not more so. A Temple on a Mountain top is described. It is encircled by courts, quite similar to the concentric courtyards (prakāram) of a Hindu temple. Aspirants are climbing up the ‘Mountain of Evolution’ and waiting in the enclosure outside the Temple – ‘The Outer Court’. None are in the Outer Court save those who have definitely dedicated themselves to service. Much has to be accomplished in the Outer Court, classified by the author as purification, thought control, character building, spiritual alchemy and ‘On the Threshold’. These are to be practised simultaneously, sincerely and continuously.

From page 36/37:

” We have seen that religion must have its mystic side and this is true of Islam. Ali, again, was the beginner, and the followers of Ali the transmitters. In the year following the flight from Mecca, forty-five poor men bound themselves together to God and his Prophet, to live as a community, and to observe ascetic practices. This was the seed of Sufism, the mystic side of Islam. They teach that ´all is from God´. They teach that there is naught save God and that the universe is but a mirror of Him. They teach that there is one perfect beauty and that all that is beautiful is only a ray from Him. They teach there is only one love, the love of God, and all other loves are true if they come from that. They teach that He alone is true Being and that all else is non-being; and that man who is himself can by illumination rise from non-being to Being and return whence he came. “

Beauties of Islam

62 pages | Paperback | Theosophical Publishing House Adyar, 2002

First Paragraph:
I AM to speak this evening on Islam in the light of Theosophy. Let me begin by saying a word or two as to the relation of that which is called “Theosophy” to the great religions of the world. As you can at once see by the name, if we translate it into English, it means simply “Divine Wisdom”.

By that name is indicated THE WISDOM in its relation to all the religions of the world. Every religion in its turn has grown up from the great Root of the Divine Wisdom.

auteur: Besant, A.

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Every religion in its place is an exposition of the Divine Life in humanity, and so this teaching which takes only the name of the Divine Wisdom, without any sectarian limitation, is the fervent helper and defender of every religion which has uplifted and consoled humanity. It is no one religion, but every religion, that has in it a friend and a defender. Through immensely long ages or kalpā-s, climbing steadily the ladder of evolution, the ‘Liberated Ones’ merge with eternal life. Within them burns the flame of Love for all that exists. It is they who, from time to time, descend into manifested forms (avatāra-s) to accelerate the course of evolution. The Yoga of Beauty

By Dr. Laurence J. Bendit.

24 Pages | First edition, third reprint 2004 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 817059281X.

Here Dr. Laurence J. Bendit  has dealt with the subject of beauty from the Theosophical point of view, principally to say that beauty transforms consciousness. It links the spiritual with the psychical. In his words, ‘ takes down shutters in the mind‘, and the real artist must be open to the inner world of Nature, who is the greatest creative artist, being unconditioned by past experiences. The search for beauty is a form of yoga.

From page 19:

” The discipline of the seeker after God as Beauty, here consists, as in all other forms of seeking, in removing the factors which stand between him and what he seeks. Patañjali tells us that if we want to find Truth, we do not have to move from where we are, but simply to take down the shutters in our minds, to stop letting the mind interfere with our perceptions. We then see what has been within reach of us all of the time. So it is with the aesthetic: a matter of allowing the vision of the Beautiful to flow into us freely and without obstruction. “

The Transforming Mind

By Laurence J. Bendit and Phoebe D. Bendit.

160 Pages | Second Quest printing 1983 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835600122.

Many seers, mystics, artists and poets seem to have an inkling about the purpose of life – the mystery of creation. Such an experience is something each of us must seek and find for ourselves. Such an experience can happen ‘in a moment’, in the twinkling of an eye. We must come upon such a transformative vision of reality, declare the authors, we must, or we die.

Clairvoyant, Phoebe Bendit, has ‘seen’ our potential for undoing the harm we have done, and are doing, to our personhood and to our planet. With her Jungian trained psychiatrist husband, Laurence, they have written this, sometimes frightening, but essentially optimistic, spiritual/psychological study of the mind and the supermind of man. Attractive in its simplicity, extra-ordinary in its potential. The Transforming Mind suggests that once man looks inward to encompass the whole of Nature, he will automatically re-order his world and save it for peaceful use by his children and their children.

From Chapter VII ‘Jacob’s Ladder’:

” Jacob dreamt, and behold, a ladder set up on earth, and the top of it reached to heaven; and behold, the Angels of God ascending and descending on it. And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, ‘I am the Lord, the God of Abraham . . . And behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee withersoever thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land, for I will not leave thee until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of . . . ” – From: Genesis 28.23.

The Etheric Body of Man – The Bridge of Consciousness

By Laurence J. Bendit and Phoebe D. Bendit.

124 Pages | 1977, third Quest printing 1989 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835604896.

A clairvoyant and a psychiatrist pool their talents in a study of the human health aura! No other work can speak to this subject with such confidence. Imagine:

  1. Taking one of the most respected clairvoyants in the world.
  2. A psychiatrist recognized for his fine contributions to his field.
  3. Having the clairvoyant study the aura of a human subject using her unusual talents.
  4. Having the psychiatrist study the psyche of the same subject.
  5. Then finally integrating their observations to arrive at new and startling conclusions concerning the subtle (physically invisible) human bodies. It has never been done before. It may never be done again.

From page 20:

” A particular feature of the aura, which stands out to the vision of every competent clairvoyant is a series of quickly moving vortices of energy situated at certain points of the body. These were known of old, and are often found represented in ancient diagrams, whether of East or West, on statues or carvings, and so on. Sometimes – as in the halo of Christian saints, or in the caste-marks of Hindus – a particular one of these centers is emphasized and the rest left out. But in any case they appear pretty constant both in ancient traditions and in the perceptions of modern sensitives. Moreover, it is not by any means essential to be able to see to realize their existence, and many people become aware of them through their hands when examining a person with an extra-sensory touch. “

Our Psychic Sense – A Clairvoyant and a Psychiatrist Explain How It Develops

By Laurence J. Bendit and Phoebe D. Bendit.

225 Pages | First Quest book edition, 1967 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835600343.

If we are ever to become knowledgeable about the ‘whole man’ we must learn to understand his deeper invisible nature. This book, authored by a Jungian psychiatrist and his clairvoyant wife, helps us to do just that. Combining their talents, the Bendits provide us with a unique and enthralling overview of man’s latent powers.

Our Psychic Sense has also been referred to as the ‘sixth sense’. It can be considered as a window opening onto the real world of our inner consciousness; not just a valuable adjunct to our personality, but our actual ground of being. Together, the Bendits describe this mysterious power within us, then explain how it manifests, and finally evaluate its uselfullness to humanity.

From page 223:

” Many people are extremely frightened of psychic invasion or, as it is commonly called, possession or obesession. There is no need for this: no psychic force or entity can invade the aura of a human being unless he himself opens the door to it. That is to say, in principle, that if a person’s mind is positive, he is perfectly safe. If he becomes frightened, however, he is in a negative state, and he may then feel himself to be a prey to forces, which do not seem to belong to him. But the ‘entity’ or force is almost certain to be really only an unconscious part of himself: something which psychological re-education can help him to deal with. […] In any case, if one realizes that one is master in one’s own house, and that any intruder can be dealt with by positive thought and self-assertion, there is no need for fear. “

The Mirror of Life and Death

By Laurence J. Bendit (1898-1974).

199 Pages | Published in 2004, third reprint | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 0835675548.

The book suggests according to its author, that the basis of life is in timeless and universal Being, which becomes projected for evolutionairy purposes into the space-time world of existence. Existence can only be significant when seen against its root in pure Being. Birth, growth, decay, death and, if tradition be true, rebirth, are part of a single process. They are moreover, not separate parts, but each one co-exists all the time with the others, even when one aspect predominates.

The Mysteries Today – And Other Essays

By Laurence J. Bendit and Phoebe D. Bendit.

154 Pages | First printed in 1973 | Hardcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0722950241.

Theosophy in the true sense is the perennial and unchanging philosophy of mankind, but its presentation needs to be adapted to the times. In these essays an attempt is made to discuss some of the principles of this philosophy in modern terms, and especially related to the presentation of it as set out by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891) and others. It can safely be assumed that, were these older writers doing their work today, they would do so in quite other language than in that of the nineteenth and earlier twentieth centuries. They would have to take into account the vast mental revolution which has been taking place in the last thirty or forty years, which has altered our views on so many things, and in particular in our knowledge. These collected articles rest very much on the modern – and probably temporary – mental climate of the second half of the twentieth century.

From the Introduction:

” Theosophy, the Wisdom of the enlightened mind, is unchanging for ever. It existed before history began – for man was already inhabitant of the earth – and it will endure lonf after history had ended as a record of events in time: when it will, in some form, remain as part of the heritage of the universe. It is the Pearl of Great Price fo the Gnostic Christian, it is the Jewel in the Lotus, the Clear Light of the Buddhist, the Tao of the mind; it is known by many names, yet it is always the same Wisdom . . . “
