Science, Yoga and Theosophy

By several authors.

262 Pages | 1977 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar.

The Theosophical Society was formed at New York, November 17, 1875, and incorporated in Madras, India, April 3, 1905. The three declared Objects are:

1. To form a nucleus of the Universal Brotherhood of Humanity, without distinction of race, creed, sex, caste or colour.

2. To encourage the study of comparative religion, philosophy and science.

3. To investigate unexplained laws of nature and the powers latent in man.

From the Chapter ‘Scientific Alchemy – The Physics of a New Age’ (p. 9):

” Plato’s dream of the philosopher-king os perhaps realizing its most practical actualization in the new physics: the union of the philosopher-scientist. The scientific method of the new physics is encompassing an imaginative wholeness, an indeterministic openness, that might best be conveyed by the language of poetry and philosophy, by the TAO. There is no dichotomy here between science and poetry; equation and verse together become a symbol for an expression of the reality of the universe. “

Devas and Men – A Compilation of Theosophical Studies on the Angelic Kingdom

By anonymous authors. Authorities quoted amongst others: Helena Petrovna Blavatsky(1831 – 1891), Charles Webster Leadbeater (1854 – 1934), Alice Bailey (1880 – 1949) and Geoffrey Hodson (1886 – 1983).

396 Pages | First edition 1977, 3rd reprint 2000 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar.

The concept of Deva-Man is both intriguing and immense; intriguing, because much of it still remains a mystery and what information is available is often carefully veiled; immense, because it appertains to the whole of man and to his relationship with nature and the Universe. […] What does ‘deva’ mean? The word is derived from the Sanskrit meaning ‘to shine’ – hence the ‘shining ones’, the ‘resplendent ones’. But the term is used very loosely and in Hindu Scriptures, for instance, may refer to all life which is invisible. It is suggested too, that devic life is the sum total of of substance itself, the basis of all manifestation, or, in other words, Spirit-Matter. It refers to a whole range of life that is evolving ‘pari passu’ with the human.

From page x:

” If we will but scan the records of history, legend and myth we can see the parts, which they played in the childhood of the race. We find records of these angelic beings, and their connection with man, in all the sacred scriptures of the world . . . “

” In the future, they will definitely take in charge the guidance of man’s evolution along special lines, and will constantly aid and instruct him. ” – Theos. Vol. 40, p. 186).

Zelfrealisatie door liefde – De Bhakti-Sutra van Narada

83 blz.

auteur: Taimni, I.K.
ISBN: 9789061750765
Additional DescriptionMore Details

94 blz. | Gebonden/Hardcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland, 2014 (1997)

auteur: Taimni, I.K.
ISBN: 9789061750734
Additional DescriptionMore Details

auteur: Taimni, I.K.
ISBN: 9789061750604
Additional DescriptionMore Details

516 blz., Index, Woordenlijst | Gebonden/Hardcover | 8e dr.

auteur: Taimni, I.K.
ISBN: 9789061750758
Additional DescriptionMore Details

Questions from the City, Answers from the Forest

By Ajahn Sumano Bhikku.

183 Pages | First Quest edition 1999 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. ISBN 0835607747

” Sincere inquiry always sparks our movement towards truth. Deep questions signal the manifestation of the very energy through which we outgrow ourselves. “

So writes Ajahn Sumano Bhikku, American-born Buddhist monk now living in a simple meditation cave in Thailand. Born in Chicago, a law school graduate and real estate professional, Sumano abandoned his comfortable American lifestyle for the shaved head, begging bowl, and rigorous meditation schedule of a forest monk. In 1994-1995, Sumano conducted a series of question and answer evenings at a guest house in Thailand’s Kowyai National Park with English-speaking tourists. The heartfelt questions of these city people and the clear answers Sumano gave from his forest perspective form the basis of this remarkable book. Written on a battered,  battery-powered laptop in his meditation cave, Sumano’s fascinating personal story and his refreshingly down-to-earth blend of American sensibility and Eastern practice will fascinate newcomers to Buddhist ideas as well as experienced practitioners.

Annie Besant – A Character Sketch

100 Pages | First edition 1946, first reprint 1993 | Paperback | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar

Well-known humanist and journalist W.T. Stead (1849 – 1912) writes of Annie Besant (1847 – 1933): ‘there are few living women, who have in them more of some elements of the Christian saint, than this fiery assailant of the Christian creed.’ He traces the various phases of her search for truth as also the challenges she faces.

From the Foreword by C. Jinarājadāsa (1875 – 1953):

” At last, sitting alone in deep thought as I (Annie Besant) had become accustomed to do after the sun had set, filled with an intense but nearly hopeless longing to solve the riddle of life and mind, I heard a Voice, that was later to become to me the holiest sound on earth, bidding me take courage for the light was near. A fortnight passed, and then Mr. Stead gave into my hands two volumes. ‘Can you review these? My young men all fight shy of them, but you are quite mad enough on these subjects to make something out of them.’ I took the books; they were the two volumes of The Secret Doctrine written by H.P. Blavatsky.   .   .   . I wrote the review, and asked Mr. Stead for an introduction to the writer, and then sent a note asking to be allowed to call. I received the most cordial of notes, bidding me to come (pp340 – 1). ” – From page viii.

The Feminine Face of Christianity

128 pages | Paperback | Quest Books, 2003

Even though feminine values have always been at the core of Christianity, its long history has often ignored or marginalized women’s key role in it. Margaret Starbird’s unique view from the feminine perspective serves the need many are feeling to search their traditional faith for fresh meaning and inspiration in these difficult times. This is the second in a series of splendidly illustrated but affordable gift books on the feminine experience of religion (following Gill Farrer-Halls’ The Feminine Face of Buddhism, 2002).

The result is a powerful and lovely tool for contemporary women seeking the Divine Feminine within Christianity. Each chapter includes inspiring sidebar quotes, prayers, poems, liturgies, and meditations—both traditional and modern—to provide manna for the spiritual journey and practice the presence of a God beyond gender, but immanently within reach.

auteur: Starbird, M.
ISBN: 0835608271
Additional DescriptionMore Details

Could Mary Magdalene have been Jesus’ wife? Starbird explores this possibility and the “sister-brides” who accompanied male disciples to forge a new understanding of gender-based faith and of sacred marriage with the Divine. She also gives us the rich heritage of stories about women’s generous service and encouragement for the inner journey, ranging all the way from little-known early saints to Mother Theresa. She points out that fundamental Christian values such as compassion, reconciliation, and the healing of crippled bodies and broken hearts are all strongly feminine in nature. Her view, though, is cooperative rather than contentious: She aims, not to discredit the masculine, but to right the missing gender balance she finds inherent in the faith. Margaret Starbird received a Fulbright Fellowship for study at the Christian Albrechts University in Germany. Author of The Woman with the Alabaster Jar, she travels extensively leading retreats and seminars on reclaiming the Sacred Feminine. She lives outside Seattle, Washington.

Seeking Wisdom

233 Pages | Second reprint, 2004 | Paperback | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar

From the first chapter I – Seeking Wisdom:

” In the Dialogue dealing with the death of Socrates, Plato explains that the true philosopher meets death as a friend and not as an enemy., because he understands the nature of the change, which death brings about. It is a natural and happy change. One’s attitude towards death depends on one’s understanding of life, the true nature of which is inseparable from the truth with regard to death. Philosophy means literally ‘Love of the Wisdom’. These are two words, each of which has an extraordinary and beautiful meaning. It would be well worth while for us to try to understand what the true nature of Love is, and what is really meant by Wisdom, which of course is not mere knowledge. “

N. In this lecture, Mr. Sri Ram (1889 – 1973), known for his deep understanding of philosophical questions, explores how consciousness loses its sensitivity and gets obscured, but has the potency of awakening into the full light of wisdom. He says: ‘We do not notice the beauty of a cloud or the movement of a leaf or bird and many other things. An artist is needed to paint a picture and point out the beauty‘.

How can we achieve union with the living beings around us, and even to a slight extent be open to the truth and beauty, which are inherent and omnipresent in life? This book offers insights into how the quality of our consciousness can be transformed so that it is constantly renewed, remaining open to the truth of life as it reveals itself.

An Approach to Reality

263 Pages | First edition 1951, 3rd edition revised & enlarged 1968, reprinted 1992 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar

This volume is based on adresses delivered in different places over a period of years, and carefully revised. It contains portions written to elucidate points touched upon in the adresses. They are being printed in this form in the belief, that they may be of some help to those interested in such matters. The subject of Reality is a difficult one, and whatever is in the following pages represents the writer’s approach and is essentially an attempt on his part to define his own understanding. The standpoint with regard to all matters in the book is that of a student of Theosophy; what Theosophy is as seen from his own and unique point of view. To one, who seeks true understanding without that dogmatism, which ever negates the seeking, there is no finality. Seeking implies discovery, and fundamentally, each must come to Truth by him or herself. But there is a value in exchange of views.

Mr. N. Sri Ram (1889 – 1973) was International President of the Theosophical Society from 1953 – 1973, a period of twenty years. He brings to his writings a background of Eastern Wisdom combined with a keen awareness of modern thought and knowledge, as well as a sensitive understanding of human problems. His special felicity of style enables him to convey profound ideas in a lucid and absorbing manner.

An amazing storehouse of information, A Dictionary of Gnosticism, contains nearly 1,700 entries, from Aachiaram, an angel in the Secret Book of John, to the Zostrianos, a third-century Gnostic text that recounts a series of revelations on the successive stages of the soul’s ascent. Additional DescriptionMore Details

As editor of The Gnostic magazine and author of several books on apocryphal scriptures, Andrew Phillip Smith draws on his extensive knowledge of Gnosticism to provide a succinct yet thorough compilation for scholars and spiritual seekers alike. Smith not only defines the terminology of the Nag Hammadi library and the ancient Gnostics, but also their successors such as the Manichaeans, Mandaeans and Cathars. His definitions also cover Hermeticism, the apocrypha, medieval heresy, dualism, and the modern Gnostic revival. “Andrew Phillips Smith offers us yet another key opportunity to expand our knowledge of Gnosticism. A fascinating, solidly-researched key resource for students, academics, and practitioners alike “A ‘beacon of Light’ for our time! Highly recommended.”— Dr Karen Ralls, Oxford, author of The Templars and the Grail. Blockbuster films like The Matrix and Stigmata have helped fuel the continued fascination with Gnosticism, a pre-Christian Western religion based on the direct knowledge of the Divine, which itself provides salvation. Although The Matrix conveys complex concepts like archons and dualism with marvelous simplicity, Gnostic texts do anything but. Curious new students of Gnosticism find they are swiftly bombarded with numerous foreign, often un-translated, and barely pronounceable terms like ‘Acinetos’ and ‘Deitharbathas’. Now for the first time, a comprehensive guide to all aspects of Gnosticism and related spirituality is available to the public in a straightforward dictionary. Andrew Phillip Smith was born and grew up in Penarth in south Wales in the United Kingdom and took his degree in computer science at the University College of Wales, Swansea. From 1987, Andrew worked in computing in London, including a two-year stint providing technical support for the publishers Harcourt Brace. From 1997-2007 Andrew lived in Northern California near the Sierra Nevada mountain range, where he began his writing career. In his time he has busked on the streets of London playing a small harp, delivered leaflets, worked as a security guard, as a letterpress printer and as a librarian to a private library. Andrew’s previous titles include The Gnostics: History, Tradition, Scriptures, Influence and several books in Skylight Paths’ annotated and explained series: The Lost Sayings of Jesus, The Gospel of Philip, and Gnostic Writings on the Soul. In September and October 1880, H.P. Blavatsky and Colonel Henry Olcott visited A. P. Sinnett and his wife Patience at Simla in northern India. From this correspondence Sinnett wrote The Occult World (1881) and Esoteric Buddhism (1883), both of which had an enormous influence in generating public interest in Theosophy. Uit de Hut van het Lotusvrouwtje

124 blz. | Gebonden/Hardcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland, ca. 1959 (1ste druk)

Buddhism – An Outline of Its Teachings and Schools (Theravada, Mahayana, Vajrayana)

By Hans Wolfgang Schumann.

200 Pages | First Quest edition 1974 | Paperback | Quest Books, USA.

WITH 39 DRAWINGS AND PHOTOS.

Both general readers and serious students of Buddhism will welcome the systematic arrangement of material, which makes this book a reliable guide through a vast field of thought. The author worked from original texts, and his work contains many original observations. Of special value is a Tabulated Synopsis of the major systems of Buddhism enabling the student to grasp, almost at a glance, the fine distinctions between them.

From its Preface:

” Five hundred years before the rise of Christianity there originated in India a religious doctrine, which does not make a god or the gods the subject of its thinking , but concentrates on man himself as interwoven with the cosmic cycle. As its author, Siddhattha Gotama, the ‘Buddha’, was convinced of having revealed in this teaching a natural law, he calls it ‘the law’ (p: dhamma, Skt: dharma), thereby simultaneously characterising it as a rule for human behaviour. Aptly, his followers chose the wheel (P: cakka, Skt: cakra) as symbol of the dharma: a symbol of functional unity, of pivotal standstill in movement and, in ancient India, of righteous royal rulership.

[…]

The twenty-four wheel symbol of the righteous ruler (cakkavatin) belongs to the lion-capital of the pillar erected in Sārnāth by Emperor Asoka in the 3rd century B.C. The edict carved in the pillar warns against schism of the monastic order. The lion-capital is today India’s national coat of arms; the wheel was incorporated in the Indian national flag. As a Buddhist symbol, the ‘wheel of the teaching’ may have eight to thirty-six spokes. ”

Sri Sankara – Life, Philosophy and Relevance to Modern Times (ALS general 14)

Paperback | Adyar Library Series

National and emotional integration is the need of the hour in Indian context. In the global and Universal context equality and brotherhood of man, non-violence, respect for Nature and non-pollution of her elements are burning issues today. Centuries ago Sri Sankara, towering philosopher of Bharat, lived a life and preached an art of living that helped the country in the maintaining, by and large, her emotional and cultural, if not political, oneness through her tumultous age. His philosophy of non-dualism stresses the fundamental unity and total harmony of all beings, animate and inanimate. “Unity alone is real; love it and take refuge in it” the Acarya preached. As the present book shows, all this is a panacea for all the ills of the humanity, now choked in an atmosphere that is dense and polluted with excesses of the industrial and technological revolutions, the political and social upheavals, and an allround degeneracy in morality and ascendancy of violence.

Het innerlijke leven van Krishnamurti

413 blz.

auteur: Sanat, A.
ISBN: 9789061750857
Additional DescriptionMore Details

Buddhist Meditation

172 pages | Second edition, 2nd reprint 2007 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar

This book consists of a series of talks given to a group of international students at The School of Wisdom at the Theosophical Society headquarters in Chennai, India.

Venerable Professor Samdhong Rinpoche was born in Eastern Tibet and arrived in India with His Holiness The Dalai Lama. He is a distinguished Tibetan scholar, the first democratically elected Prime Minister of the Tibetan Government in exile and the former Director of the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies in Sarnath, Vārānasi.

Does every person who is in training for meditation needs a guru?

A. That depends on the person. According to Buddhist training methods, an absolute beginner cannot do without an instructor; every Śrāvaka needs a guru. But for how long the instructor is needed depends entirely on the progress of the individual pupil. In a few cases, a guru is not needed. A Pratyeka Buddha in the becoming does not need a guru. “

Yoga and the Teaching of Krishna

390 Pages | First edition 1998, 1st reprint, 2006 | Soft cover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar

This volume is a compilation of some of the essays, which Ravi Ravindra (1939 – present), a scientist-philosopher, has written over more than a quarter of a century. These essays have been published in a variety of journals and magazines, some of which are now easily accessible. Brief excerpts from some of his books, Whispers from the Other Shore, Science and Spirit, The Yoga of the Christ, and Krishnamurti: Two Birds on One Tree, are also included in the collection.

Each of the selections here is influenced by yoga and the teaching of Krishna; all of them speak of and are related to the wisdom of the spiritual traditions of India. They range from an exploration of Rita in the Rig Veda and its relation to Yajña and Dharma in the subsequent tradition to a reflection upon the influence of the Indian tradition on contemporary spiritual Masters, such as  J. Krishnamurti (1895 – 1986) and G.I. Gurdjieff (1866 – 1949). Some of the essays deal exclusively with the great texts of India, such as Yoga Sutra and the Bhagavad Gita, while some deal with parallels which can be found with texts from other traditions, such as The Enneads of Plotinus and The Gospel according to Saint John.

A Short History of the Theosophical Society

591 Pages | First Edition, 2nd reprint 2007 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar

THE GOLDEN STAIRS

” A clean life, an open mind, a pure heart, an eager intellect, an unveiled spiritual perception, a brotherliness for one’s co-disciple,a readiness to give and receive advice and instruction, a loyal sence of duty to the Teacher, a willing obedience to the behests of TRUTH, once we have placed our confidence in, and believe that Teacher to be in possession of it; a courageous endurance of personal injustice, a brave declaration of principles, a valiant defence of those who are unjustly attacked, and a constant eye to the ideal of human progression and perfection, which the secret science depicts – these are the golden stairs up the steps of which the learner may climb to the Temple of Divine Wisdom. “- Helena P. Blavatsky.

The year 1875 was a milestone for both the Eastern and the Western world. The Theosophical Society founded in that year, still thrives. This book traces its history over a period of sixty-two years, recording most of the important events and personalities of the time.

Mrs. Josephine Ransom (1879 – 1960), the author had access to more archival information than her precedessors, for example. Curuppumullage Jinarājadāsa (1875 – 1953), who edited The Golden Book of the Theosophical Society in 1925. Moreover, of additional value are the initial chapters, in which the authors traces the spiritualism that pervaded in the period prior to the founding of the Society. The absence of personal opinions and criticism adds to the historical value of the book.

Paths to Wholeness (Study Guide)

By Willamay Pym.

39 Pages | Copyright 1989 by The Theosophical Society in America | A4 Study Course | Quest Books, U.S.A. | No ISBN.

The course may be studied by an individual. In this case, the keeping of a journal, supplemental reading, and a willingness to discuss the material with others will be most useful in deepening and broadening one’s insights. Prior to each lesson is a section entitled ‘Preparation for Lesson…’ Many of the articles listed in these sections are from the American Theosophist special issues or from Quest Magazine.

From page 37:

” The desire for wholeness develops within the framework of human love. It is only when love has been sufficiently developed by means of different kinds of temporary relationships between different fragments of the Divine Life (that means us) that the love for the whole is born within it. Then, instead of seeking satisfaction in this piecemeal manner, the fragment seeks it in the whole and through the whole in other fragments . . . This coming together in whatever measure it may be achieved is the only source of happiness, bliss or ananda there is in this world. Love is the very nature of the Divine, the unity which is the One Reality. It alone is the force, which causes the unreal to be drawn into the Real – the many into the One. “

Dynamics of the Psychic World – Comments by H.P. Blavatsky

Comments by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, comp. by Lina Psaltis.

132 Pages | Reprint 1989 | Paperback | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar.

Psychic phenomena, magic, hypnotism, spiritualism, planes of perception, dreams, and spiritual progress – these are some of the subjects discussed in this collection of excertps from the writings of one of the most famous occultists of history: Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891).

In this small book the compiler has drawn together from various sources some of the important and interesting statements made by H.P. Blavatsky more than a century ago on subjects, which are arousing wide interest today. Her comments not only reveal something of her profound knowledge and wisdom, but are also fascinating, informative and relevant. They contain valuable advice to those who would dabble in psychic realms without being aware of their dangers and pitfalls.

From page 104/105:

” The key in each degree is the ‘aspirant himself’. It is not the fear of God, which is the beginning of Wisdom, but the knowledge of SELF which is WISDOM ITSELF. How grand and true appears, thus, to the student of Occultism who has commenced to realize some of the foregoing truths, the answer given by the Delphic Oracle to all who came seeking after Occult Wisdom – words repeated and enforced again and again by the wise Socrates: MAN KNOW THYSELF . . . ”
