The Mental Body

By Arthur E. Powell (1882 – 1969).

372 Pages | First published in 1927, second edition 2018 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 9788170596080.

The mental body is the vehicle of thought and is one of the subtle bodies of a human being. To plant our feet firmly on the thought-world, and reach upwards to the very abstractions of thought will surely bring us to the treshold of a world higher and purer, not only in degree, but also in kind. Through those abstractions we shall rise to the world of the spirit, and draw appreciably nearer to the God-consciousness from which we now feel and know ourselves to be temporarily exiled.

This book describes the anatomy, nature and functions of the mental body based on the first-hand testimony of noted clairvoyants like Charles Webster Leadbeater and Annie Besant. It is the third in a series by Colonel Arthur E. Powell, attempting to provide a condensed synthesis of theosophical knowledge to all lovers of esoteric lore. The others in the series are: The Etheric Double – The Health Aura, The Astral Body and Other Astral Phenomena, The Causal Body and the Ego and The Solar System.

From Chapter 13 – ‘Physical or Waking Consciousness’ (p. 105):

” A man’s mental body is affected by almost everything in his environment. Thus, for example, the pictures, which hang on the walls of his rooms influence him, not only because they keep before his eyes the expression of certain ideas, but also because the artist puts a great deal of himself, of his inmost thought and feeling, into his work. This we may term the unseen counterparts of the picture, clearly expressed in mental and astral matter, and these radiate from the picture just as surely as scent inheres in and radiates from a flower. “

The Astral Body – And Other Astral Phenomena

By Arthur Edward Powell (1882 – 1969).

288 Pages | First published in 1926, 1927, 1954, second edition 2014 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 9788170595809.

This classic tekst has long been used as a principal resource by students and scholars of astral phenomena. A natural companion to Powell’s The Etheric Double – The Health Aura, its subject is the structure, nature, and powers of the astral body, the vehicle of feelings and emotions seen by clairvoyants as an aura of flashing colours. Based on first-hand testimony by noted clairvoyants, including Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891), Charles Webster Leadbeater (1854 – 1934) and Annie Besant (1847 – 1933), Powell’s perceptive commentary is of enduring interest to all lovers of esoteric lore. Others in the Powell series are: The Mental Body, The Astral Body and Other Astral Phenomena, The Causal Body and the Ego and The Solar System.

From Chapter I  – ‘General Description’:

” Briefly, the astral body of (wo)man is a vehicle, to clairvoyant sight not unlike the physical body, surrounded by an aura of flashing colours, composed of matter of an order of fineness higher than that of physical matter, in which feelings, passions, desires and emotions are expressed and which acts as a bridge or medium of transmission between the physical brain and the mind, the latter operating in the still higher vehicle – the mind-body. “

The Art of Meditation – (Adyar Pamphlet New Series No. 5)

By Marie Poutz.

21 Pages| A talk delivered at ‘Olcott’, Wheaton, Illinois, in the Summer of 1935; first published in 2003 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170594413.

When you succeed in building a bridge at first in meditation between the personal self and the world of intuïtion – where brotherhood, joy and beauty are facts – and then gradually spreading it all through your daily life, you will no longer ask whether you’re making progress. You will simply have forgotten all about yourself! And in precisely this forgetting lies your success and achievement . . .

From page 1 & 2:

” People are apt to think that meditation to be successful must be accompanied by some astral phenomenon – seeing forms, colours, hearing sounds, bells, and so forth. Even some purely physical sensations – a shiver along the spine, a tingling in the finger tips – those examples have come to me, and they are hailed with delight and proclaimed on the housetops, to the dismay of those who have had no such experiences, and therefore consider their own meditations as failures. Surely, such trivial and often foolish manifestations do not constitute a succesful meditation. They are rather an obstacle, because they draw the attention away from the inner realities. It is better to see and hear nothing on the psychic planes, so that the consciousness, wholly turned inwards, may reach communion with the Divine and gradually unify the personal self with the Ego consciousness. ”

Kabbalah – An Introduction and Illumination for the World Today

By Charles Poncé.

297 Pages | Copyright 1973, seventh printing 1997 | Softcover, incl. illustrations | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835605108.

This detailed and readable introduction to the Kabbalah – the ancient system of Jewish mysticism – illuminates its fascinating history and points out its striking parallels with astrology, yoga, numerology and tarot. Over 100 illustrations, many reproductions of historic book plates, diagrams, and charts, bring the theories of Kabbalah vividly to life. Students of Kabbalism and anyone interested in esoteric thought will find Kabbalah an essential handbook on the background, doctrines, and applications of this rich and important mystical system.

From Part Three – ‘The Kaballah Today’ (p. 259 & 260):

” In order mythically to reconstruct the universe, we must reconstruct of rediscover the original unity within us by calling forth and constellating the total man, who each and one of us has the potential to become. This then, is the unity of opposites: the marriage of all the contradictions one might find between what one would like to do and what one is, and what one does and pretends to be. To this end must we reawaken the heart of the hero in our daily encounter with the dragon of the world, the beast that mythology tells us demands fresh flesh daily, if not the spirit of our generation.

To many of us the Kaballah is dead. In order to revive it we must bring to it a new mythology. In much the same way as the first Kabbalists brought to their sacred scriptures a new life and greater depth by the application of mythical structures, so too must we now approach the Kabbalah with a new mythical language. That has been the goal of this introductory work: not only to introduce the general public to to the basic ideas of the Kabbalah, but to the most recent method of interpretation with which Jewish mysticism may be understood. “

From Atom to Kosmos – Journey without End

By Lafayette Gordon Plummer (1904 – 1999).

121 Pages | First published in 1940, second revised edition 1987, first Quest edition 1989 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. co-published with Point Loma Publications, San Diego | ISBN: 0835603083.

There is a type of the true clairvoyance on the spiritual and cosmic planes‘, writes Plummer. ‘There one hears the symphony of eternal life’.

Ever look through a telescope and feel spellbound at the wonders of the heaven? Seeing is believing – and to help us truly see, this book shows us how to ‘don the winged cap and sandals of Hermes‘ and ‘soar far above the Earth, beyond the pale moon, passing at a step the confines of the Solar System, until we found ourselves lost in the velvet blackness of the night sky. ‘

The author offers a riveting condensation of the ancient Wisdom. He opens readers to the universal powers latent in people, powers far greater than any psychic abilities. He also reviews astronomy’s speculations about one stupendous Super Universe, a speculation that coincides with Theosophy’s occult teachings.

From Chapter IV – ‘Life Without End’ (p. 25):

” A Master of Life is one who is able, not only to draw upon his or her own resources, inner and outer, but through the medium of his or her inner constitution, to contact the inner planes, and draw upon the resources of the Divine Being whose ‘principles’ are these planes of consciousness, and therefore a part of whose nature he or she him/herself is. And these resources are exhaustless. “

Man – A Universe in Miniature

By Joy Piper.

113 Pages | First printed in 2003, reprint 2012 | Soft cover | The Theosophical Publishing House, London | No ISBN.

In this work, the author attempts to explain the nature of man’s existence and his place in the overall scheme of things. It is concerned with challenges concerning ‘human-ness’ and all that it implies: joys, sorrows and a sense of bewilderment and frustration when one faces, as one ultimately must, the depths of one’s own ignorance as how to live a life on Earth in the truest and most spiritual sense.

It is the author’s hope, that this work may provide a basic structure for the reader’s own research and study. Feel encouraged to embark upon your own quest for knowledge of this wonderful Universe, in which we live. Discover the Great Cosmic Laws governing the way in which all solar systems with their planets in orbit follow their pre-destined pattern of movement in space: the way in which a man’s seven bodies ‘orbit’ his own ‘Spiritual Sun’ or ‘Spark of the Divine’. Because these same Great Laws apply to the macrocosm (the large) and to the microcosm (the small). As it is above, so it is below, as it is within, so it is without: by learning about humankind – ourselves – we can begin to find the answers to questions about the Universe.

From page 107:

” Although the Masters may not actively intervene in human affairs, they can and do constantly observe the progress of events on our planet Earth. They are aware of those individuals, who have willingly committed themselves to the rigours of self-training necessary to equip them with the knowledge and stamina, which are essential for carrying out the Masters’ work. This work involves spreading the Ageless Wisdom Teachings – Theosophy – as widely as possible, so that others also may become helpers in the work of the Masters. In this way, the Masters’ influence for Good will greatly undermine the dark forces, so that in time a greater harmony will prevail in life on our world. ”

Yoga Beyond Fitness – Getting More than Exercise from an Ancient Spiritual Practice

By Tom Pilarzyk, Ph.D.

267 Pages | First Quest Edition 2008 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 9780835608633.

Exotic yoga vacations, designer clothing, new hybrid forms; yoga for weight loss; yoga for your dog . . . Author Tom Pilarzyk believes something essential has been lost as the 5.000-year-old spiritual practice has become a $6 billion pop culture industry. We tap its true power only by returning to yoga’s roots: Holding daily intention, welcoming difficulties that test resolve, opening the heart when feeling victimized, and remembering to breathe deeply and witness the spontaneous play of energy all around. Yoga beyond Fitness offers a bridge to yoga’s serious meaning for the millions, who use it for exercise, but want more. It traces America’s love affair with yoga while offering an overview of diverse teachings.

From Chapter – ‘The Frog under our Mat’:

” Social recovery and personal metamorphosis begin by examining our own perceptions and intentions and our own expectations and judgements of ourselves. It cannot be otherwise. Only in this way do we begin to gain freedom from clinging to past deficiency where we are never good enough, strong enough, straight enough, long enough, wise enough, or young enough just to be who and how and what we are at this very moment. The natural outcome of our transformation is happiness, at peace with ourselves and the world. This is Yoga’s promise, what Krishnamacharya once called India’s greatest gift. We must not waste it on what it was never meant to be.  “

ESP of Quarks and Superstrings

248 Pages | First edition 1999, reprint 2005 | Hardcover | New Age International Limited Publishers, New Delhi | ISBN: 8122412092.

In his forthcoming book The Image of God in Matter, Phillips provides further confirmation of the validity of the yogic psychic ability exercised by Annie Besant (1847 – 1933) and Charles Webster Leadbeater (1854 – 1934) to magnify subatomic particles. The source of this independent support is the Jewish mystical tradition called Kabbalah, which is based upon the cosmic blueprint of the so-called ‘Tree of Life’.

Phillips proves that this geometrical object embodies the mathematics of superstring theory and encodes the structure of the superstring constituents of quarks as clairvoyantly described by the two Theosophists. He shows that Jewish mysticism, as well as Pythagorean mathematics, share a common ground with recent scientific discoveries about the nature of matter and space-time, whose relation to higher  realities is proved to confirm certain Theosophical teachings. Clairvoyant, mystical and scientific insights are shown to be in harmony with one another, because each expresses in its own way the profound truth, that matter ultimately embodies the nature of God symbolised by the ‘Tree of Life’.

From the Conclusion (p. 243):

” With the information revealed in ‘Occult Chemistry’ a great expansion of our knowledge of Chemistry lies in front of us. It is just because this expansion is inevitable, that our clairvoyant investigators have toiled patiently for thirty years. They have claimed no recognition from chemists or physicists, because clearly will sooner or later be woven into the whole fabric of truth. The fact that this generation of scientists hardly knows anything at all of an extraordinary work of research extending for thirty years matters little, when we contemplate the long vistas of scientific investigations which the imagination sees awaiting mankind. “

Anima, Evidence of a Yogic Siddhi – Remote Viewing of Subatomic Particles

By Stephen M. Phillips.

66 Pages | First edition 1996, first reprint 2003 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592976.

This paper presents evidence of how facts of nuclear particle physics have confirmed purported, psychic descriptions of subatomic particles. It is because Annie Besant (1847 – 1933) and Charles Webster Leadbeater (1854 – 1934) finished their observations many years before pertinent scientific knowledge became available that their work cannot be dismissed as fraudulent. Nor can their observations be interpreted as precognitive visions of future ideas and discoveries of physics. Besant and Leadbeater claimed that they used one of the eight yogic siddhis (aṇimā) to study the structure of the atoms in every element.

From Chapter – ‘Micro-psi Investigations’ (p. 1):

” The Vedas and books on yoga mention siddhis, or psychic powers, which a yogi may acquire as a result of meditation, drugs, incantations or austerities. The Yoga-Sūtra’s, the earliest exposition of yoga written by Patañjali about 400 BC., describes eight siddhis. In Aphorism 3.26 of the Sūtra’s he states that a yogi can acquire ‘knowledge of the small, the hidden or the distant by directing the light of the superphysical faculty’:

pravr̥tty-āloka-nyāsāt sūksma-vyavahita-viprakr̥ṣṭa-jñānam |

In parapsychological terms the ability to acquire ‘knowledge of the hidden or the distant’ is ‘remote viewing’ of the world at large. The ability to obtain ‘knowledge of the small’ can, likewise, be interpreted as remote viewing of the microscopic world. It has the Sanskrit name of animā and is defined by writers on yoga as ‘minuteness, the power to become as small as atom, at will’. It has been given the self-explanatory name of ”micro-psi’. “

A Geometry of Space-Consciousness

By James S. Perkins (1899 – 1991).

147 Pages | First edition 1964, 2nd revised edition 1973, 3rd revised edition 1978, 1st reprint 1986 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170590205.

In this little volume, a new approach to the understanding of that ultimate mystery, Space, has been indicated. Physical space is viewed as the outer, visible appearance of an invisible ‘inner space’. The explanation given herein of major concepts are treated visually as well as verbally to render precisely the geometrical patterns of movement. There are two geometries:

  1. The geometry of form in physical space.
  2. The geometry of motion in man’s consciousness.

The object of this manual is to describe for practical use the movements of consciousness and their inter-orbital transpositions as a means of creative self-discovery.

From the Introduction (p. v):

” HERMES Trismegistus proclaimed that the greatest ill among men is ignorance of God. Since the greater sages and teachers of mankind have ever taught that the above is reflected in the below, the statement attributed to Hermes is tantamount to saying that the greatest ill among men is the ‘igorance of men’ – ignorance of man’s God-self. “

And a Time to Die

By Mark Pelgrin. 159 Pages | First Re-Quest Edition 1962 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835603059.

ed. by Sheila Moon and Elizabeth B. Howes

When a man stands alone . . .

Every man is born and every man dies. None is born conscious of the significance of this birth in time, and most are unaware of the significance of this death. Some do have an intimation of the meaning of dying, and a few achieve an intensified relationship to the purpose behind the final life experience. Even fewer have ever chronicled the ways by which they came to that place, where death seemed the ultimate step in self-fulfilment. This book is therefore a rare account, coming from a man, who died at the age of 47 of cancer, but who gave the last year of his life to a heightening and hastening of his search for all the seasons of God – a man who came, at the end, to where he could say yes to both sides of the paradoxes of Ecclesiastes.

From the beginning of the book:

” For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep and a time to cast away; a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. “

Space, Time and Self

By Edward Norman Pearson (1887 – 1975).

288 Pages | First published in 1957, reprint 1964, second reprint 1994 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592224.

It is the author’s thesis that all life’s problems arise from three illusions, which were drawn over mankind at the beginning of history when the Solar Deity, seeking to manifest, drew over himself three limitations giving rise to three primary illusions of:

  1. Space or objects existing in space as dimensions.
  2. Time as succession of events.
  3. Self as separated existence.

The mind of a human being vainly tries to measure Boundless Space dimensionally, Eternity in terms of our terrestial Time and fails to conceive Self except in terms of separate existence. Grasp of Infinity, Eternity and Unity appear to elude its grasp.

The author has sought to bring all the Theosophical Wisdom relating to Matter and Cosmogenesis, Involution and Evolution and the Laws governing these under the three sections 1. Illusions of Space, 2. Time and 3. Self. He contends that Science, Philosophy and Religion are the means for grappling with these illusions.

From Chapter – ‘Physical and Super-Physical’ (p. 61):

” Light, according to science, is either a wave undulating in a non-material medium or a succession of particles of energy known as ‘photons’. While the first three senses, we found, operated primarily for the benefit of the body and the next one contributed to the development of the mind, the sense of sight, which we now come to consider, extends its reaches still higher to contribute to the spiritual welfare of man. Who has not reveled in the ever-changing enchantments of Nature, the exquisite beauties she exhibits day by day? Through the sense of sight we can even break through the boundaries of earth and soar unhampered to lose ourselves in the sublimities of the vast empyrean. “

Free Energy Pioneer: John Worrell Keely

By Theo Paijmans.

472 Pages | Copyright 1998 | Softcover | IllumiNet Press, Lilburn, U.S.A. | ISBN: 1881532151.

Over a century ago, a man in Philadelphia made the most important discovery of all time: a mysterious source of free, unlimited energy. He experimented with the substance for years, building a staggering 2.000 machines and devices, that ran on his esoteric force.

His eccentric vision led him to experiment with anti-gravity and the disintegration of solid matter. Numerous people witnessed his demonstrations, and his work was well known to Nicholas Tesla (1856 – 1943), Jules Verne (1828 – 1905) and Thomas Edison (1847 – 1931). The occult underground was inescapably drawn to him, and early science fiction still owes him a debt of gratitude.

The name of the enigmatic inventor: John Ernst Worrell Keely (1837 – 1898). He was one of the world’s first and foremost free energy pioneers.

From page 398:

” In Lovecraft’s 1920 tale, ‘From Beyond’, an inventor who blended science with metaphysics builds a device, that emanates waves, which enable the person to see beyond that what our sense organs usually perceive. ‘The waves from that thing are waking a thousand sleeping senses in us; senses, which we inherit from eons of evolution from the state of detached electrons to the state of organic humanity’, the inventor claims. But that is not all, for the inventor states ‘You have heard of the pineal gland? . . . That gland is the great sense organ of organs – I have found out. It is like sight in the end, and transmits visual pictures to the brain. ‘ Through the rays that this device emits, people are able to see beings that live in another dimension or plane of existence.

But years before Lovecraft painted his haunting picture, in 1882 a woman said to Keely: ‘You have opened the door into the spirit-world’. He answered: ‘Do you think so? I have sometimes thought I might be able to discover the origin of life.’ “

182 Pages | Copyright 1979, Vintage Books Edition 1989 | Softcover | Vintage Books, a Division of Random House, Inc. | ISBN: 9780679724532.

‘ Groundbreaking . . . the first direct look at texts termed heretical by early church fathers. ‘

In 1945, an Egyptian peasant unearthed what proved to be the Gnostic Gospels, the sacred books of one of the earliest Christian sects. This now-classic landmark study draws on those texts to illuminate the world of the first Christians and to examine the different ways, in which both Gnostics and the orthodox constructed God, Christ, and the Church. Did Jezus literally rise from the dead? Was there only one God, and could He be both Father and Mother? Whose version of Christianity came down to us and why did it prevail? Brilliant, provocative, and stunning in its implications, The Gnostic Gospels is a radical yet accesible reconsideration of the origins of the Christian faith.

From the Introduction (p. XVII):

” For I am the first and the last,
I am the honored one and the scorned one.
I am the whore and the holy one.
I am the wife and the virgin . . .
I am the barren one,
and many are her sons . . .
I am the silence that is incomprehensible . . .
I am the utterance of my name “

Thunder, Perfect Mind, a Text from the Nag Hammadi find.

Old Diary Leaves – Volume VI 1896 – 1898

By Henry Steel Olcott (1832 – 1907).

403 Pages | First edition 1935, second printing 1975 | Paperback | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 0835674916.

The Chapters of this Volume, originally published in The Theosophist from January 1905 to December 1906, complete the story of The Society as written by the President-Founder. No revision of the Leaves as they originally appeared has been attempted. The Editor’s work is confined to a few explanatory notes, and the correction of typographical and a few other obvious errors.

From Chapter XXI – ‘Magic: Black and White’ (p. 316):

” The phenomena of H.P.B. and other Adepts in occult science prove superabundantly that when there is present the dominating will, the ceremonials may be dispensed with. When it is a question of a less developed thaumaturge, the consecrated sword, the triangular altar, the prepared lamb-skin, the circle of burning lamps, the lighted incense sticks, the flowers, the solemn invocations would be useless. In the Abra-Melim book the veil is partially raised so as to give the reader a quite sufficient peep into the penetralia of Black Magic. It dates from 1458 A.D. and it purports to have been given by Abraham, the author, to his son Lamech, and to compromise the Magic taught by God to Moses, Aaron, David, Solomon, and other Patriarchs and Prophets. “

Old Diary Leaves – Volume V 1893 – 1896

By Henry Steel Olcott (1832 – 1907).

507 Pages | First edition 1932, reprint 1975 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 0835674878.

The year 1893 now opens up before us, and its events will be found to be very important. As previously shown, the rumblings of the coming tempest about Mr. William Quan Judge (1851 – 1896) were beginning to be heard. Towards the end of the year the arrival of Mr. Walter G. Old of the London staff, with the budget of notes and memoranda, which he had taken, enabled me by comparing documents to see the depth and fullness of treachery, which Mr. Judge had long been planning. I find from my Diary of 1893 that the greater part of the first day was spent by Messrs, Keightley, Old and myself in summarising the evidence in the case; and needless to say, all our hearts were filled with sorrow, for this was almost if not the very first case of downright perfidy in our Society’s history.

From Chapter IX 1894 – ‘Mrs. Besant’s Tour in the United Provences’ (p. 111):

It was almost as though they were wading through a stream of human beings. On every side, to great distances, stretched the swarthy multitude; the river banks were crowded with bathers; streams of people moved hither and thither to visit the camps of notabilities – rajahs and maharajahs, zemindars and talukdars, declaiming teachers of various sects, hatha yogis by the score, making a public show of their austere practices, some smeared with ashes and streaked with saffron caste-marks, some with their long dishevelled locks, supplemented with chignons or vegetable fibre built up into high dusty cones, like exaggerated rats’nests, on top of their heads, some lying on beds of spikes, some sitting in the different ‘asans’ prescribed by Patanjali, some decorating their bodies after their baths, some with eyes closed as if in meditation, etc. – but with very few exceptions, each having spread on the ground before him a cloth on which the pious pilgrims could cast their alms of copper coin: pious humbugs in short. “

Old Diary Leaves – Volume IV 1887 – 1892

By Henry Steel Olcott (1832 – 1907).

537 Pages | First printed 1910, second edition 1931, third printing 1975 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 0835674843.

It is six years since the Third Series of Old Diary Leaves appeared in book form. and it is nine years since the contents of the present Volume were published in the pages of The Theosophist. The author, Henry Steel Olcott, passed over in 1907, and as all who knew him well are aware, the publication of the whole of this ‘true history of the Theosophical Society’ was a matter that lay near his heart. There still remains sufficient material to fill one, if not two, additional Volumes, and it is hoped this will appear in due course, for the longer the lapse of time that separates the present membership of the Theosophical Society from its early history, the more important it is that the facts should be placed on record.

For the earlier part of the story, relating to America and India, there was no living authority so well able to bare witness to the facts as the late Co-Founder of the Society. In this present Volume, however, we traverse a period when, owing to to the world-wide spread of the organisation, the touch of the President with the whole of the Society was not so close, and maybe there are those well qualified to write of the development of different Sections, who could effictively supplement the present history so far as their own country is concerned. But such sectional or national histories remain to be written, and in the meantime the record of Colonel Olcott is here to read – and inwardly digest.

From Chapter XXIII – ‘From Stockholm to Kyoto (p. 407):

” The ladies of our local Branch had organised a charming scheme of moral and religious instruction for children, to which they gave the name ‘The Children’s Hour’. A special exhibition of it was given for my information, and it delighted me very much. The motive was to impress upon the youthful minds the idea of the fundamental resemblance between the world religions and the advisability of learning to be kind and tolerant to all men, of whatsoever race or creed. A senior girl represented Theosophia, and other the Founders of religions – Krishna, Zoroaster, Gautama Buddha, Christ, Mohammed, etc. Each of these held a staff carrying a symbolical pennant. A simple, yet excellent dialogue was framed, in which Theosophia put questions to each of the flag-holders, to give him or her the chance to quote from the Scriptures of the Founder of that religion; verses, which embodied the Theosophical spirit. The children wore pretty dresses, there was some little marching and other exercises, and all seemed to enjoy the occasion. “

Old Diary Leaves – Volume III 1883 – 1887

By Henry Steel Olcott (1832 – 1907).

460 Pages | First printed 1904, second edition 1929, reprinted in 1972 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 0835674800.

The first Volume of these historical sketches covered the period from the meeting of Madame Blavatsky (1831 – 1891) and myself, Henry Steel Olcott, in 1874, to our departure from New York for Bombay in December, 1878. The second Volume tells of our adventures in India and Ceylon, the formation of Branches, the giving of lectures, healings of the sick by hundreds, occult phenomena produced by H.P.B. etc., and brings us down to the Autumn of 1883: at this time we take up the thread of narrative, and go forward to the Month of May, 1887.

I think the reader will agree with me that the subject-matter of this third Volume possesses absorbing interest, quite equal to that in its two preceding Volumes, if not greater. Accounts are given among other things of my meetings with several of the ‘Masters’ in the course of my travels, and of the results of the same, of our removal of the Society’s Headquarters from Bombay to Madras, of H.P.B.’s last departure from her beloved Indian home into exile of an European residence. The troublous time of the Coulomb conspiracy are dealt with in this Volume and the true story of the S.P.R.

From Chapter XXVII – ‘The Opening Ceremony’ (p. 403):

” We are together, Ladies and Gentlemen, upon an occasion that is likely to possess an historical interest in the world of modern culture. The foundation of a Library of such a character as this is among the rarest of events, indeed, it be not unique in modern times. We need not enumerate the great libraries of Western cities, with their millions of Volumes, for they are, rather, huge storehouses of books; not the collections of Oriental literature at the India Office, and in the Royal and National Museums of Europe; nor even the famed Saraswati Mahal, of Tanjore: all these have a character different from our Adyar Library, and do not compete with it. Ours has a definite purpose behind it, a specific line of utility marked out for it from the beginning. It is to be an adjunct to the work of the Theosophical Society; a means of helping to effect the object for which the Society was founded, and which is clearly stated in its constitution. Of the three declared aims of our Society, the first is to form a  nucleus of the Universal Brotherhood of Humanity, without distinction of race, creed, or color. The second is to promote the study of Aryan and other Eastern literatures, religions and sciences. “

The Buddhist Catechism

By Colonel Henry Steel Olcott (1832 – 1907).

Dutch translation: De Boeddhistische Catechismus | Published in 2003 | Hardcover, incl. bibliography, word list and reading ribbon | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 9061750814.

The Buddhist Catechism is an invaluable textbook for those wishing to familiarize themselves with the basic principles of Buddhism. Since it first edition in 1881 it has been published in more than twenty languages, mainly by Buddhists for Buddhists, and was widely used in the Buddhist educational movement which used in the Buddhist educational movement, which Colonel Henry Steel Olcott established in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka).

The book is constructed in an easy to follow question-answer form, together with an appendix, which outlines the fourteen fundamental Buddhistic tenets. These fourteen items were accepted as fundamental in both the Southern and Northern sections of Buddhism, by authoritative committees to whom they were submitted by the author personally.

From its Preface:

” The unpretending aim in view is to give to succinct and yet comprehensive a digest of Buddhistic history, ethics and philosophy as to enable beginners to understand and appreciate the noble ideal taught by the Buddha, and thus make it easier for them to follow out the Dharma in its details. “

  1. Het leven van de Boeddha
  2. De Leer
  3. De Sangha of kloosterorde
  5. Enige overwegingen omtrent boeddhisme en wetenschap

Oude Wijsheid, Modern Inzicht

Door Shirley Nicholson, vertaald door Wim D. Margadant en Frank Visser.

220 Pagina’s | Uitgegeven in 1989 | Softcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 9789061750598.

Engels origineel: Ancient Wisdom, Modern Insight | First Adyar Edition 2011 | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 9788170595281.

Ancient Wisdom, Modern Insight

By Shirley Nicholson.

242 Pages | First Adyar Edition 2011 | Hardcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 9788170595281.

Dutch translation: Oude Wijsheid, Modern Inzicht | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 9789061750598.

The Secret Doctrine (1888) by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891) presented compelling evidence for the existence of a timeless Wisdom Tradition, which has a world view based on the fundamental principles of oneness, interconnectedness and periodicity. The essential teaching of this Tradition points to the unity of all life, the interdependence of all natural processes and the profound identity between the human being’s true Self and the cosmos.

This book, in its second and revised edition. identifies remarkable parallels between the Ancient Wisdom and the insights of both modern science and contemporary thought. The author correlates main ideas from Blavatsky’s Magnum Opus with the views of eminent scientists like Albert Einstein (1879 – 1955), Ilya Prigogine (1917 – 2003), David Bohm (1917 – 1992), Niels Bohr (1885 – 1962) and many others. She succesfully shows, that the findings of modern science have a resonance with the insights of ancient seers about the nature of Reality.

From Chapter 15 – ‘Self-Transformation’ (p. 213):

” The work of self-transformation on the path is to enlarge the scope of our conciousness to include all the levels of our being and to integrate all the layers and levels into a dynamic whole. The aim of evolution, which the path hastens, is to release all our potentials and place them at the service of the Self, which can then integrate the newly developed powers into its sphere of ever-expanding activity. Our unfoldment is not merely the awakening of spirituality, but gaining the conscious use of all that is in us at every level. ”

Adyar- Historical Notes & Features up to 1934

By Mary Katherine Neff (1877 – 1948) and others with a foreword by Curuppumullage Jinarājadāsa (1875 – 1953).

54 Pages | First edition 1934; published as A Guide to Adyar, second edition 1999 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170593328.

From Java westwards to Vancouver, from Iceland southwards to New Zealand, through the three Americas, North, South and Central, and in the islands of the Antilles, wherever live and work the Theosophists among whom I have been, the word Adyar represents not only a place but a vision of hope for mankind. The home of the Theosophical Society – the ‘Parent Society’ as it has been called, from which have now branched several independent offschoots – is for tens of thousands that place where flies a wonderful flag of idealism.

This idealism, which Adyar bodies forth is represented by a group of theosophical workers from many lands, and representing all the world faiths, who toil to make of all the nations and of all the religions one indivisible whole. To build bridges between people and people by proclaiming the power of the ideal of brotherhood, to build bridges between faith and faith, science and religion, between work and art, by stating to a modern world the old truths of Divine Wisdom, this is Adyar’s work day by day . . .

From page V:

” A place between the river and the seas,
Divine and filled with an almighty peace.
You, who have heard the sound of angel’s wings
And, answerless, have questioned without cease,
Rest here, and learn the very Scheme of Things. “

Vedanta Sidhanta Bheda

By Narmadashankar-Devshankarmehta.

125 Pages | Published in 1985 | Hardcover | S.N. Publications | No ISBN.

An Account of Followers of the Sankarācārya School.

The book deals with the doctrinal differences among various followers of Sankarācārya School – the component of Advaita metaphysics. The study is divided into four Chapters based upon the four headings under which the subject matter of Vedānta naturally falls. Chapter I deals with Categories of Vedānta Brahma, Māyā, Jiva and Jagat, Chapter 2 reviews the harmony of Physics and Metaphysics. Chapter 3 recounts the means of realizing Brahman. Chapter analyses the theory liberation – the ultimate aim of man’s existence.

The book is systematically arranged. Each chapter is divided into sections and subsections, indicative of differences of the ācāryas in regard to their respective doctrines. The work is based upon the Siddhantalesa of Appaya Diksita. Other works have also been consulted and the results obtained. The author has taken care to avoid personal reflections on the Comparative merits of various doctrinal differences. The upholders of differences are allowed to speak in their own words, rendered into English, so that the reader might impartially grasp their views.

From the Introductory Remarks (p. VII):

” ‘Know Thyself’ is the ultimate appeal of all the orthodox and heterodox systems of Indian Philosophy. Inquiry into the Nature of Self was a stirring principle in the Indian soil, which has put to motion all the reflective minds from ancient times. The great cosmological hymn of the Rigveda, which is so much celebrated for the loftiness and uniqueness of its thought is one of the so many links of a long chain of philosophical Compositions of the pre-Rigvedic Aryas, which have survived the lapse of 3.000 years. The Rigveda – the most ancient repository of Indian thought and culture – presents a grave picture of a Rishi relflecting upon the cause of the universe and the problems of life. His speculations will, no doubt, excite the sneer of a matter-of-fact man of the nineteenth century. But a man, who cares to discern the beauty of ancient literature, should follow the sound piece of advice given by Hume: ‘Nor is it ever permitted to judge of the civility or Wisdom of any people, or even single persons, by the grossness or refinement of their theological principles. On this account, all the absurdities of the pagan system of theology must be overlooked by every critic, who would pretend to form a just notion ancient poetry’. Thus, there is no wonder when one Rishi says, that the universe is born of the great golden egg. “

The Primal Power in Man or the Kundalini Shakti (1950)

By Swami Narayanananda (1902 – 1988).

155 Pages | Photocopy of the 1950 edition | Kessinger Publishing Company, Montana U.S.A. |  ISBN: 1564598403.

Arthur Avalon has written a voluminous book on Serpent Power (Kundalini Shakti). I heartily thank him for his great efforts and the service rendered. In this book, I have purposely avoided diagrams, depicting the different Chakras (Centres) and their Lotuses. No doubt, it helps some, but with many it has created and it creates grave misunderstanding and doubt. The Lotuses and the different Chakras are the mental visions. As such, they are very subtle things. And people in bringing these subtle visions into gross forms, in the form of diagrams, often have committed and commit blunders. In order to avoid all these confusions, I have omitted all sorts of diagrams. I am not giving mere book knowledge here. What I have ventured to write, is my own little experience of the subject. And I would request my readers not to believe me blindly, but to carry on experiments, and then to test and see the validity of the facts stated here. This will clear all doubts. Lastly, I thank heartily all those, who have helped me in bringing out this book successfully.

Life is for Living

By Surendra Narayan.

This Volume assembles the addresses and articles of Mr. Surendra Narayan, mainly published in The Theosophist during the period 1980 to 1995 when he was the International Vice-President of the Theosophical Society. With characteristic Wisdom, clarity, humanism and catholicity of outlook, these essays, written in an easy style, serve to enlighten and inspire the reader intellectually and spiritually. All serious students of life should find them interesting and useful.

Mr. Narayan comes from a family of Theosophists, who always stressed right living. He believes, that if humanity cannot attain liberation or Nirvana without living in this world, this world would not have been created. His lectures and articles have won appreciation in many countries.

From Chapter 36 – ‘Living in Richness’ (p. 220):

” The sages have said, that one who has risen above personal desires becomes free from anxiety, fear, worry and is ever tranquil, calm and joyous. Such a one does not want anything from anybody, is ever helpful to all, living like a king who is responsible in richness. In the Yoga Vāsishtha, such a person is spoken of as one from whom good qualities emanate all around, as white swans fly all over from a pure lake; having seen whom, having heard about whom, having met with whom and having remembered whom, all creatures feel joy. It then adds: Him or Her from whose heart emanates purity all around, the Guardian Angels of the world protect and support . . . “

Annie Besant on the Brotherhood of Religions

By Annie Besant (1847 – 1933), compiled by Surendra Narayan.

79 Pages | First edition 1993 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592178.

Annie Besant (1847-1933) led the fight for the rights of women and laborers in her native England; later she worked with Mahatma Gandhi and spearheaded India’s struggle for freedom. Theosophist Joy Mills describes her as ‘a feminist before the movement for women’s rights was fully launched; she stood for freedom when half the world was held in the bonds of colonialism.’ A student of India’s spiritual traditions, Annie Besant was famed as an orator, author, and international President of the Theosophical Society.

From Chapter 5 – ‘One World Religion’ (p. 76):

” When religious hatreds have passed, when religious controversies have disappeared, when men have learned supreme truth so often preached, so little practised: ‘Let him that loveth God love his brother also’: when out of the World Religion has grown the World Peace; when out of the World Faith has grown the World Service; then religion shall shall be what it ought to be, the helper of the downtrodden, the protector of the weak, the teacher of the ignorant, the raiser of the fallen; then religion will not only tie men to God but man to man, and it will be realized that knowledge of God is best expressed in service to Man. “

Animal Welfare and Nature: Hindu Scriptural Perspectives (Second Edition)

By G. Naganathan, Foreword by Dr. Karan Singh with an Introduction by Dr. Michael W. Fox.

30 Pages |This book was originally a publication of the Centre of Respect for Life and Environment, Washington. First edition 1991, second edition 2000. With illustrations | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170594170.

In the Hindu view of life, all creation is linked together by a golden thread, because all manifestation has sprung from the eternal Brahman – Ishvasyamidam Sarvam Yatkincha Jagatyam Jagat – as the Upanishad has it. The seers of the Vedas, therefore prayed for the Welfare not only of the human race but for all living creatures, including animals, and indeed even for such apparently inanimate objects as trees and plants. Animals have always played a central role in the Hindu perception. In its mythology every God and Goddess is associated with a particular animal as its vehicle or vahana.

From the Foreword:

” The point that emerges is that animals are not to be looked upon as creatures to be cruelly exploited but as partners with human beings in the spiritual adventure of living. Indeed, although hunting was also an old Hindu tradition, it is surely significant that in both our great epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, tragedy should have been triggered by hunting episodes. The whole question of animals as bound to human beings in a benign symbiosis receives considerable attention in the Hindu scriptural tradition, the most popular of which, of course, became the cow, which is still looked upon by millions as sacred. “

The Science and the Art of Indian Medicine

By G. Srinivasa Murti (1887 – unknown).

196 Pages | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170590337.

Many and varied have been the objections that have been raised, from time to time, against the recognition and encouragement by the State of the indigenous systems of medicine like the Ayurveda, the Siddha and the Unani; these objections have always been challenged by exponents of these systems as well as by others interested in their promotion. The resulting controversy has sometimes been mild and sometimes wild. Some of the objections are trivial, while others are vital. And round none has the fire of controversy raged so fiercely as on the central question whether these Indian systems of medicine are scientific or not. The object of this memorandum is to view things from a scientific standpoint and stimulate scientific discussion on a subject which, it is clear, can now be neither ignored nor shelved.

From Chapter ‘Ayurveda as an Art – The Past and the Present’ (p. 195):

” Hence it is that, in Indian Medicine, it has always been considered necessary that the training of the future physician should provide not only for the study of Medicine in all its branches, as as to equip him or her with the capacity to have proper expert orientation to the problems of health and ill-health but also for the study of the Humanities, the Classics, as will enable him to have the proper humanist-orientation to Life and its Vital human problems. In other words, the ancient scheme of studies was so ordered as to give to the world great physicians, who were not only great scientists, but also great humanists. ”

Be a Lamp unto Yourself

By Kotha Satchidananda Murty (1924 – 2011).

278 Pages | First Edition 2000, Adyar Pamphlets New Series No. 2 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170593344.

‘What alone serves as the light here for a man? The Self alone serves as his light.’

The Theosophical Society, founded in 1875, is a worldwide body, whose primary object is Universal Brotherhood based on the realization that life, in all its diverse forms, human and non-human, is indivisibly One. The Society imposes no belief on its members, who are united by a common search for truth and the desire to learn the meaning and purpose of existence by engaging themselves in study, reflection, purity of life and loving service. Theosophy is the Wisdom underlying all religions when they are stripped of accretions and superstitions. It offers a philosophy which renders life intelligible and demonstrates that justice and love guide the cosmos. Its teachings aid the unfoldment of the latent spiritual nature in the human being, without dependence or fear.

From the Conclusion (p. 20):

” Lastly, it is easy enough to say, ‘Search for yourself; whatever you find in the end will be quite all right.’ But this does not seem to be of much use in practice. That is why everybody, who has been a religious preacher or teacher has always added something more. For example: Follow, devote yourselves to one who is wise, who is able to lead, who is dutiful, who is noble, who is very learned and who is above all a good and disciplined (wo)man.

This is from Dhammapada, Sukhavagga, 12.

But then the question arises: Where am I or you to find such a (wo)man? That is your business and mine. “

The Tibetan tradition of mystical verse is brought stunningly to life by renowned translator Glenn Mullin through these spontaneous outpourings of the ecstasy of enlightenment. Each is prefaced by a translator’s preamble.

From Chapter 11 – ‘A Prayer of Pure Aspirations’ (p. 193):

Part One: A Call to the Guru:

” Most kind root guru, who always rests

On a sun and moon above my head,

I, a humble disciple, call out to you

With emotion surging in the depths of my heart.

From wherever you may physically be in this world,

Send forth a mystical emanation to heed me.

Reveal your radiant countenance to me;

And may we never ever become parted. “

Reconstruction in Education

By Maria Montessori (1870 – 1952).

14 Pages | Reprinted from The Theosophist, Feb. 1942, 7th reprint 1986 | Booklet | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170590043.

We have the idea that education can help the development of the child, and that we, adult people, will give this help. That is the ordinary idea of education. This idea is not a right idea, because it concludes that the adult can help this little child very much with his or her own wisdom and care. The idea of education is to give to the child and to young people all the best that we have.

That is so: but we cannot with our efforts, create a man. That is the task of the children themselves and it is the most important side of the whole educational question: what the children themselves accomplish of their own power and not what adult man can do for them.

From page 14:

” The hope we have is a hope in a new humanity, that will come from this new education, and education that is a collaboration of man and the universe, that is a help for evolution, for the incarnation of man. “

The Absorbent Mind

By Maria Montessori (1870 – 1952).

297 Pages | Fifth edition 2011 | Soft cover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 9788170594307.

Every reader loves a mystery, and what more fascinating than one hidden in the ‘heart’ of the newborn child? This book touches on prenatal experience, but is mainly concerned with the growth and education of the child from birth, through the formative years, to adulthood.

The world-famous educationalist, Dr. Maria Montessori, illustrates the unique mental powers of the young child, which after no more than six years surpasses all other species. With penetrating insight, validated by close observation of child phenomena, she sheds light on the responsibility of adults to prepare the environment for the manifestation of the great potentialities and latent spiritual grandeur in the child.

From page 14:

” It is the child, who absorbs material from the world around him or her and moulds it into the man or woman of the future. To recognise this great work of the child does not mean to diminish the parent’s authority. Once they can persuade themselves not to be themselves the builders, but merely to act as collaborators in the building process, they become much better able to carry out their real duties: and then: in the light of a wider vision, their help becomes truly valuable. The child can only build well if this help is given in a suitable way. Thus, the authority of parents does not come from a dignity standing on its own feet, but it comes from the help they are able to give their children. The truly great authority and dignity of parents rests solely upon this. ”

Food for Thought

By Adam Moledina.

71 Pages | Published in 1996 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | No ISBN.

Even non-vegetarians, at least the generality of them, may really not be aware of the true enormity of pain and suffering our subhuman brethren have to undergo to meet the fancied needs of man’s palate. Food for Thought shows in graphic intensity the inch-by-inch torture our animals undergo and how in the name of scientific farming we have perfected and continue to perfect torture as a fine art and science. Each sincere reader will have to face the stunning questions: What right do I have to inflict so much suffering on other creatures? Does my subsistence really call for all that? The final decision, of course, is his or hers to take.

From page 63:

” More people are becoming aware of the deplorable conditions to which animals are subjected to live all their lives. The conscientious consumer is now demanding meat, poultry and eggs from animals raised on farms. There are known as ‘free-range’ products. Each of us is responsible for our choices, and for the consequences of our choices. The better informed we are, the more intelligently we are able to weigh the alternatives and make choices that satisfy our conscience. If real change comes about, as it can, it will have to be consumer-led. The bottom line weapon that counts is the shoppping bag.

Can I see another’s woe,

And not be in sorrow too?

Can I see another’s grief

And not seek for kind relief? “

The One True Adventure – Theosophy and the Quest for meaning

361 pages | Paperback | Quest Books, 2008

Theosophy is a vision of wholeness for all humanity that inspires a fellowship united in study, meditation, and service. It is an open-minded inquiry into world religions, philosophy, science, and the arts in order to understand the wisdom of the ages, respect the unity of all life, and help people explore their own spiritual path. The ultimate goal: self-transformation.

auteur: Mills, J.
ISBN: 9780835608688
Additional DescriptionMore Details

Mills balances these words of caution with words of inspiration and hope from notable scientists, theologians, philosophers, mystics, novelists, poets, and public servants. Whether citing The New York Times or Madame Blavatsky’s The Secret Doctrine; quoting the 19th century British explorer Edward Whymper or the Secretary-General of the UN, Mills leads her readers on a fascinating pilgrimage where all those who dare to partake are sure to find love in the pursuit of wisdom. The journey toward transformation is what Joy Mills calls “the one true adventure.” Now in her eighties, Mills shares her remarkable Theosophical insights with audiences across the globe in this thought-provoking collection of essays. The One True Adventure: Theosophy and the Quest for Meaning features a cross-section of her best writings spanning six decades. Revealing a youthful vibrancy throughout the text, she explores ideas that are “eternally applicable to the human condition.” While she acknowledges that the human condition often seems riddled with endless misery and folly, Mills asserts that we have not yet become fully human and that there is great hope in our potential for growth. Before that can happen, however, we must turn our gaze inward. “The struggle to become a person, to become human, takes place within,” she expounds. To become fully human is to uncover “our essential unity, our immortal destiny; our potential divinity.” In The One True Adventure Mills groups her essays to correspond with the four stages in the quest for meaning: The Human Condition, Our Hidden Potential, Esoteric Teachings, and Self-Transformation. This text is not simply the summary of a wise woman. They are also a guidebook to the acquisition of wisdom by anyone who follows their guidance. In her essay “Seek Out the Way,” for instance, Mills employs the metaphor of life as a journey. On the journey of life we participate either as tourists, enjoying life in a superficial sort of way, or as pilgrims, seeking a deeper sense of life’s meaning and purpose. The true quest is not for the passive spectator. To engage fully requires that we are willing to pay the price by assuming full responsibility for our own choices, and “a readiness to risk all for the sake of the journey.”

Op de Drempel van het Heilige Pad – Psychologisch Commentaar op Licht op het Pad

Door Joy Mills (1920 – 2015).

188 Pagina’s | Eerste druk 2004 | Paperback | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 9061750865.

Engels origineel: Entering on the Sacred Way – A Psychological Commentary on Light on the Path | Published in 2000 in the Wisdom Tradition Book Series | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835607895.

100 Years of Theosophy – History of the Theosophical Society in America

By Joy Mills (1920 – 2015).

215 Pages | First edition 1987 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. |  ISBN: 0835602354.

Theosophical history seldom lacked the colorful personalities and intriguing situations that always lend piquancy to human narratives.

Beginning with ‘Birthing and Growing Pains’, concluding with ‘A New Vision is Granted’, historian Joy Mills relates the founding, the growth, the goals achieved and not achieved, the momentous and the less significant vicissitudes that accompanied the theosophical movement in America.

In this meticulously researched work, Mills captures the intense dynamics, the human drama, that is inevitably part and parcel of any revolutionary movement away from society’s established religious pattern. This history of The Theosophical Society in America is, in a very real sense, the history of a small group of spiritually dedicated individuals; people determined to establish a nucleus of Universal Brotherhood and to encourage a search for ‘Truth’ in this world of illusions, dilemmas, sufferings and satisfactions.

100 Years of Theosophy is a definite overview of the evolution of Theosophy and the Theosophical Society in the United States, But it is necessarily more. It is also the story of the people involved. Their daring, their commitment. Their extraordinary spiritual perspective. Their quarrels and their caring. So complete is this chronicle that Dr. Ellwood suggests that it ‘is certain to be the standard history of the Theosophical Society for years to come.

O Hidden Life – An Exposition by Joy Mills

By Joy Mills (1920 – 2015).

14 Pages | Reprinted from The Theosophist, June 1976 | Softcover (Leaflet) | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592410.

Sometime, in early 1923, Dr. Annie Besant (1847 – 1933), then President of The Theosophical Society, penned some lines that have since become familiar to members throughout the world, have been translated into several languages, and have, indeed, become a nearly indispensable part of ebery Theosophist’s vocabulary. The words have been set to music; they have been chanted and sung; and few gatherings of the Society that have been held since that year have not been opened with the recitation of these words. At every International Convention, successive Presidents of the Society have inaugurated the proceedings with the antiphonal recitation of what has come to be known as the ‘Universal Prayer’ or ‘ Universal Invocation’. Simple in the extreme, the words possess the magical power of a mantram:

” O Hidden Life, vibrant in every atom;

O Hidden Light, shining in every creature;

O Hidden Love, embracing all in Oneness;

May each who feels himself as one with Thee,

Know he is therefore one with every other. “

The Myths of our Lives – A Way to Personal Transformation (Study Course)

By Joy Mills (1920- 2015).

41 Pages | Copyright 1990, 1996 by The Theosophical Society in America | A4 Study Course | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 9780835601160.

While the program is divided in four parts, each part can be expanded into several sessions or compressed into one session. Participants in the program may determine how long or short a course they want it to be. Not included, but recommended, is a fifth section in which group members meet to share in total the myths they have written. Such a sharing is both personally valuable and provides a useful review to the material covered in the course.

From Chapter 4: ‘Creating Rituals’ (p. 26):

” Myth, symbol and ritual are all closely related and are all expressions of archetypical realities, that may or may not be conscious within us. In fact, as we become familiar with the myths of our lives, we may find that we have been performing many rituals quite unconsciously. Sometimes people, who are very much opposed to ritual and ceremony, or who think these are outmoded by contemporary scientific and rational ways of acting, discover they have been performing rituals all their lives and in fact have even been quite unconsciously governed by them. Just as in the preceding sessions we have become aware of the myths of our lives and discovered what archetypes of the heroic journey we are living out, we may now explore whether we can find new ways to live in the world, and even how we can activate the archetypes, that we would like to experience on our hero journey. “

Leven in Wijsheid – Lezingen over ‘De Geheime Leer’

From Inner to Outer Transformation – Lectures on ‘The Voice of the Silence’

By Joy Mills (1920- 2015).

94 Pages | First edition 1996, reprint 2002 | Softcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland, Amsterdam | ISBN: 9061750830.

‘ Bestride the bird of life, if thou would’st know. ‘

It is the nature of a bird to fly upwards. When one moves to a higher position, for example to a mountain’s peak, one’s vision is greatly extended. There is much more to be seen from an airplane than from a train or an automobile. This does not mean, that the closer view of the terrain, which is seen when one is walking or driving in a car, is not important, but to gain a wider perspective of the entire area one wishes to explore, a view from the heights is essential.

The theosophical worldview gives a panoramic view, and this is an essential part of its uniqueness. Many philosophies and much of science start from a very limited view and stay there; for example, in some cases, the view is only of the physical world, and then the existence of anything beyond the physical or material is posited as perhaps plausible, but not very likely. On the other hand, the theosophical philosophy encourages us to gain the widest view possible, to start not with the physical, but with that which is the ground of our being, the ultimate reality underlying all phenomenal existence.

From Chapter II – ‘Waking up’ (p. 29):

” In the Voice of Silence, we are encouraged to take a wider view, the view a bird would have. And what is that view? From the theosophical perspective, it is a view of the universe. which brings about the profound realization of the unity of all existence. You realize, that our generation, of all generations that have lived on this planet, is the first to have seen our globe whole, that is there are no boundaries. Where are the boundaries? Where are the frontiers?

If our aim is as The Voice of Silence tells us, to ‘follow in the steps of holy Tathagata’, which is to take the Bodhisattva path, then we must see the world and all within it as does a Bodhisattva. It has been said, that a Bodhisattva sees the single thread, that unites all consciousnesses, all beings. […] We know, that there are groups in which there is ancestor worship. There is a truth in this, because the blood is symbolic of the living thread, which connects us with all ancestors and if one goes back far enough, there is only one ancestor, which is the Great Man, Purusha. We are all linked as bloodbrothers then. This was one of the great symbols in mediaeval time, to become bloodbrothers, to mingle the blood. ”

Quotes from the first chapter of this book:

Rooted in one ultimate reality, the universe and all within it proceed by a process of emanation into being. When we say “one ultimate reality” we should not really say “One,” because One implies two. So, rooted in a non-dual ultimate reality, the process was radiation through which emanation occurred and within that inherent lawfulness of the system gave rise to an evolutionary cycle of becoming, which in the human stage is self-directed and self-consciously chosen. The pivotal doctrine of the esoteric philosophy is that there are no special gifts in man, save those won by his own Ego [reincarnating self] throughout a long series of reincarnation and metempsychosis. This is important because it is not simply by living a certain number of lives, reïncarnation, that we come to transformation.
… Consciousness is primary. … Only in the human stage does consciousness become reflective upon itself and therefore self-conscious decision and effort become not only possible but constitute the priveleged choice and the responsible act of every human being. We must choose: responsibility is there.

“This is the kind of handbook I wish I had in those early days. My gift to you … this is the start of your spiritual journey, of discovering within the sage that you really are. Are you ready?” — Lama Willa Miller

Everyday Dharma: Seven Weeks to Finding the Buddha in You offers a simple guide to achieving real and lasting personal transformation. This book appeals to any who are open to Buddhism in the broader context, whether one subscribes to a specific religious view or to no view at all. Dharma, a Buddhist term for the actions taken to find one’s inner-wisdom, is really a universal concept. “If wisdom were a destination,” Lama Willa says, “Dharma—played out in our thoughts and actions—is the path leading there.” By applying Dharma’s essential truths to the modern world, Everyday Dharma teaches you how to do the spiritual, emotional and psychological work in order to bring about day-to-day well-being. Lama Willa believes the art of being happy is the true enlightenment available to us all!
