The Buddhist Catechism

By Colonel Henry Steel Olcott (1832 – 1907).

116 Pages | First edition 1881, 3rd edition, 7th reprint 2007 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar. | ISBN: 8170590272.

Dutch translation: De Boeddhistische Catechismus | Published in 2003 | Hardcover, incl. bibliography, word list and reading ribbon | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 9061750814.

The Buddhist Catechism is an invaluable textbook for those wishing to familiarize themselves with the basic principles of Buddhism. Since it first edition in 1881 it has been published in more than twenty languages, mainly by Buddhists for Buddhists, and was widely used in the Buddhist educational movement which used in the Buddhist educational movement, which Colonel Henry Steel Olcott established in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka).

The book is constructed in an easy to follow question-answer form, together with an appendix, which outlines the fourteen fundamental Buddhistic tenets. These fourteen items were accepted as fundamental in both the Southern and Northern sections of Buddhism, by authoritative committees to whom they were submitted by the author personally.

From its Preface:

” The unpretending aim in view is to give to succinct and yet comprehensive a digest of Buddhistic history, ethics and philosophy as to enable beginners to understand and appreciate the noble ideal taught by the Buddha, and thus make it easier for them to follow out the Dharma in its details. “

De Boeddhistische Catechismus

Door Kolonel Henry Steel Olcott (1832 – 1907).

English origineel: The Buddhist Catechism | Uitgegeven in 1908, copyright 1947, 42ste editie, 5de herdruk 1986 | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN:

  1. Het leven van de Boeddha
  2. De Leer
  3. De Sangha of kloosterorde
  5. Enige overwegingen omtrent boeddhisme en wetenschap

Oude Wijsheid, Modern Inzicht

Door Shirley Nicholson, vertaald door Wim D. Margadant en Frank Visser.

220 Pagina’s | Uitgegeven in 1989 | Softcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 9789061750598.

Engels origineel: Ancient Wisdom, Modern Insight | First Adyar Edition 2011 | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 9788170595281.

Ancient Wisdom, Modern Insight

By Shirley Nicholson.

242 Pages | First Adyar Edition 2011 | Hardcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 9788170595281.

Dutch translation: Oude Wijsheid, Modern Inzicht | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 9789061750598.

The Secret Doctrine (1888) by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891) presented compelling evidence for the existence of a timeless Wisdom Tradition, which has a world view based on the fundamental principles of oneness, interconnectedness and periodicity. The essential teaching of this Tradition points to the unity of all life, the interdependence of all natural processes and the profound identity between the human being’s true Self and the cosmos.

This book, in its second and revised edition. identifies remarkable parallels between the Ancient Wisdom and the insights of both modern science and contemporary thought. The author correlates main ideas from Blavatsky’s Magnum Opus with the views of eminent scientists like Albert Einstein (1879 – 1955), Ilya Prigogine (1917 – 2003), David Bohm (1917 – 1992), Niels Bohr (1885 – 1962) and many others. She succesfully shows, that the findings of modern science have a resonance with the insights of ancient seers about the nature of Reality.

From Chapter 15 – ‘Self-Transformation’ (p. 213):

” The work of self-transformation on the path is to enlarge the scope of our conciousness to include all the levels of our being and to integrate all the layers and levels into a dynamic whole. The aim of evolution, which the path hastens, is to release all our potentials and place them at the service of the Self, which can then integrate the newly developed powers into its sphere of ever-expanding activity. Our unfoldment is not merely the awakening of spirituality, but gaining the conscious use of all that is in us at every level. ”

Adyar- Historical Notes & Features up to 1934

By Mary Katherine Neff (1877 – 1948) and others with a foreword by Curuppumullage Jinarājadāsa (1875 – 1953).

54 Pages | First edition 1934; published as A Guide to Adyar, second edition 1999 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170593328.

From Java westwards to Vancouver, from Iceland southwards to New Zealand, through the three Americas, North, South and Central, and in the islands of the Antilles, wherever live and work the Theosophists among whom I have been, the word Adyar represents not only a place but a vision of hope for mankind. The home of the Theosophical Society – the ‘Parent Society’ as it has been called, from which have now branched several independent offschoots – is for tens of thousands that place where flies a wonderful flag of idealism.

This idealism, which Adyar bodies forth is represented by a group of theosophical workers from many lands, and representing all the world faiths, who toil to make of all the nations and of all the religions one indivisible whole. To build bridges between people and people by proclaiming the power of the ideal of brotherhood, to build bridges between faith and faith, science and religion, between work and art, by stating to a modern world the old truths of Divine Wisdom, this is Adyar’s work day by day . . .

From page V:

” A place between the river and the seas,
Divine and filled with an almighty peace.
You, who have heard the sound of angel’s wings
And, answerless, have questioned without cease,
Rest here, and learn the very Scheme of Things. “

Annie Besant on the Brotherhood of Religions

By Annie Besant (1847 – 1933), compiled by Surendra Narayan.

79 Pages | First edition 1993 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592178.

Annie Besant (1847-1933) led the fight for the rights of women and laborers in her native England; later she worked with Mahatma Gandhi and spearheaded India’s struggle for freedom. Theosophist Joy Mills describes her as ‘a feminist before the movement for women’s rights was fully launched; she stood for freedom when half the world was held in the bonds of colonialism.’ A student of India’s spiritual traditions, Annie Besant was famed as an orator, author, and international President of the Theosophical Society.

From Chapter 5 – ‘One World Religion’ (p. 76):

” When religious hatreds have passed, when religious controversies have disappeared, when men have learned supreme truth so often preached, so little practised: ‘Let him that loveth God love his brother also’: when out of the World Religion has grown the World Peace; when out of the World Faith has grown the World Service; then religion shall shall be what it ought to be, the helper of the downtrodden, the protector of the weak, the teacher of the ignorant, the raiser of the fallen; then religion will not only tie men to God but man to man, and it will be realized that knowledge of God is best expressed in service to Man. “

Reconstruction in Education

By Maria Montessori (1870 – 1952).

14 Pages | Reprinted from The Theosophist, Feb. 1942, 7th reprint 1986 | Booklet | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170590043.

We have the idea that education can help the development of the child, and that we, adult people, will give this help. That is the ordinary idea of education. This idea is not a right idea, because it concludes that the adult can help this little child very much with his or her own wisdom and care. The idea of education is to give to the child and to young people all the best that we have.

That is so: but we cannot with our efforts, create a man. That is the task of the children themselves and it is the most important side of the whole educational question: what the children themselves accomplish of their own power and not what adult man can do for them.

From page 14:

” The hope we have is a hope in a new humanity, that will come from this new education, and education that is a collaboration of man and the universe, that is a help for evolution, for the incarnation of man. “

The Absorbent Mind

By Maria Montessori (1870 – 1952).

297 Pages | Fifth edition 2011 | Soft cover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 9788170594307.

Every reader loves a mystery, and what more fascinating than one hidden in the ‘heart’ of the newborn child? This book touches on prenatal experience, but is mainly concerned with the growth and education of the child from birth, through the formative years, to adulthood.

The world-famous educationalist, Dr. Maria Montessori, illustrates the unique mental powers of the young child, which after no more than six years surpasses all other species. With penetrating insight, validated by close observation of child phenomena, she sheds light on the responsibility of adults to prepare the environment for the manifestation of the great potentialities and latent spiritual grandeur in the child.

From page 14:

” It is the child, who absorbs material from the world around him or her and moulds it into the man or woman of the future. To recognise this great work of the child does not mean to diminish the parent’s authority. Once they can persuade themselves not to be themselves the builders, but merely to act as collaborators in the building process, they become much better able to carry out their real duties: and then: in the light of a wider vision, their help becomes truly valuable. The child can only build well if this help is given in a suitable way. Thus, the authority of parents does not come from a dignity standing on its own feet, but it comes from the help they are able to give their children. The truly great authority and dignity of parents rests solely upon this. ”

Food for Thought

By Adam Moledina.

71 Pages | Published in 1996 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | No ISBN.

Even non-vegetarians, at least the generality of them, may really not be aware of the true enormity of pain and suffering our subhuman brethren have to undergo to meet the fancied needs of man’s palate. Food for Thought shows in graphic intensity the inch-by-inch torture our animals undergo and how in the name of scientific farming we have perfected and continue to perfect torture as a fine art and science. Each sincere reader will have to face the stunning questions: What right do I have to inflict so much suffering on other creatures? Does my subsistence really call for all that? The final decision, of course, is his or hers to take.

From page 63:

” More people are becoming aware of the deplorable conditions to which animals are subjected to live all their lives. The conscientious consumer is now demanding meat, poultry and eggs from animals raised on farms. There are known as ‘free-range’ products. Each of us is responsible for our choices, and for the consequences of our choices. The better informed we are, the more intelligently we are able to weigh the alternatives and make choices that satisfy our conscience. If real change comes about, as it can, it will have to be consumer-led. The bottom line weapon that counts is the shoppping bag.

Can I see another’s woe,

And not be in sorrow too?

Can I see another’s grief

And not seek for kind relief? “

The One True Adventure – Theosophy and the Quest for meaning

361 pages | Paperback | Quest Books, 2008

Theosophy is a vision of wholeness for all humanity that inspires a fellowship united in study, meditation, and service. It is an open-minded inquiry into world religions, philosophy, science, and the arts in order to understand the wisdom of the ages, respect the unity of all life, and help people explore their own spiritual path. The ultimate goal: self-transformation.

auteur: Mills, J.
ISBN: 9780835608688
Additional DescriptionMore Details

Mills balances these words of caution with words of inspiration and hope from notable scientists, theologians, philosophers, mystics, novelists, poets, and public servants. Whether citing The New York Times or Madame Blavatsky’s The Secret Doctrine; quoting the 19th century British explorer Edward Whymper or the Secretary-General of the UN, Mills leads her readers on a fascinating pilgrimage where all those who dare to partake are sure to find love in the pursuit of wisdom. The journey toward transformation is what Joy Mills calls “the one true adventure.” Now in her eighties, Mills shares her remarkable Theosophical insights with audiences across the globe in this thought-provoking collection of essays. The One True Adventure: Theosophy and the Quest for Meaning features a cross-section of her best writings spanning six decades. Revealing a youthful vibrancy throughout the text, she explores ideas that are “eternally applicable to the human condition.” While she acknowledges that the human condition often seems riddled with endless misery and folly, Mills asserts that we have not yet become fully human and that there is great hope in our potential for growth. Before that can happen, however, we must turn our gaze inward. “The struggle to become a person, to become human, takes place within,” she expounds. To become fully human is to uncover “our essential unity, our immortal destiny; our potential divinity.” In The One True Adventure Mills groups her essays to correspond with the four stages in the quest for meaning: The Human Condition, Our Hidden Potential, Esoteric Teachings, and Self-Transformation. This text is not simply the summary of a wise woman. They are also a guidebook to the acquisition of wisdom by anyone who follows their guidance. In her essay “Seek Out the Way,” for instance, Mills employs the metaphor of life as a journey. On the journey of life we participate either as tourists, enjoying life in a superficial sort of way, or as pilgrims, seeking a deeper sense of life’s meaning and purpose. The true quest is not for the passive spectator. To engage fully requires that we are willing to pay the price by assuming full responsibility for our own choices, and “a readiness to risk all for the sake of the journey.”

Op de Drempel van het Heilige Pad – Psychologisch Commentaar op Licht op het Pad

Door Joy Mills (1920 – 2015).

188 Pagina’s | Eerste druk 2004 | Paperback | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 9061750865.

Engels origineel: Entering on the Sacred Way – A Psychological Commentary on Light on the Path | Published in 2000 in the Wisdom Tradition Book Series | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835607895.

100 Years of Theosophy – History of the Theosophical Society in America

By Joy Mills (1920 – 2015).

215 Pages | First edition 1987 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. |  ISBN: 0835602354.

Theosophical history seldom lacked the colorful personalities and intriguing situations that always lend piquancy to human narratives.

Beginning with ‘Birthing and Growing Pains’, concluding with ‘A New Vision is Granted’, historian Joy Mills relates the founding, the growth, the goals achieved and not achieved, the momentous and the less significant vicissitudes that accompanied the theosophical movement in America.

In this meticulously researched work, Mills captures the intense dynamics, the human drama, that is inevitably part and parcel of any revolutionary movement away from society’s established religious pattern. This history of The Theosophical Society in America is, in a very real sense, the history of a small group of spiritually dedicated individuals; people determined to establish a nucleus of Universal Brotherhood and to encourage a search for ‘Truth’ in this world of illusions, dilemmas, sufferings and satisfactions.

100 Years of Theosophy is a definite overview of the evolution of Theosophy and the Theosophical Society in the United States, But it is necessarily more. It is also the story of the people involved. Their daring, their commitment. Their extraordinary spiritual perspective. Their quarrels and their caring. So complete is this chronicle that Dr. Ellwood suggests that it ‘is certain to be the standard history of the Theosophical Society for years to come.

O Hidden Life – An Exposition by Joy Mills

By Joy Mills (1920 – 2015).

14 Pages | Reprinted from The Theosophist, June 1976 | Softcover (Leaflet) | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592410.

Sometime, in early 1923, Dr. Annie Besant (1847 – 1933), then President of The Theosophical Society, penned some lines that have since become familiar to members throughout the world, have been translated into several languages, and have, indeed, become a nearly indispensable part of ebery Theosophist’s vocabulary. The words have been set to music; they have been chanted and sung; and few gatherings of the Society that have been held since that year have not been opened with the recitation of these words. At every International Convention, successive Presidents of the Society have inaugurated the proceedings with the antiphonal recitation of what has come to be known as the ‘Universal Prayer’ or ‘ Universal Invocation’. Simple in the extreme, the words possess the magical power of a mantram:

” O Hidden Life, vibrant in every atom;

O Hidden Light, shining in every creature;

O Hidden Love, embracing all in Oneness;

May each who feels himself as one with Thee,

Know he is therefore one with every other. “

The Myths of our Lives – A Way to Personal Transformation (Study Course)

By Joy Mills (1920- 2015).

41 Pages | Copyright 1990, 1996 by The Theosophical Society in America | A4 Study Course | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 9780835601160.

While the program is divided in four parts, each part can be expanded into several sessions or compressed into one session. Participants in the program may determine how long or short a course they want it to be. Not included, but recommended, is a fifth section in which group members meet to share in total the myths they have written. Such a sharing is both personally valuable and provides a useful review to the material covered in the course.

From Chapter 4: ‘Creating Rituals’ (p. 26):

” Myth, symbol and ritual are all closely related and are all expressions of archetypical realities, that may or may not be conscious within us. In fact, as we become familiar with the myths of our lives, we may find that we have been performing many rituals quite unconsciously. Sometimes people, who are very much opposed to ritual and ceremony, or who think these are outmoded by contemporary scientific and rational ways of acting, discover they have been performing rituals all their lives and in fact have even been quite unconsciously governed by them. Just as in the preceding sessions we have become aware of the myths of our lives and discovered what archetypes of the heroic journey we are living out, we may now explore whether we can find new ways to live in the world, and even how we can activate the archetypes, that we would like to experience on our hero journey. “

Leven in Wijsheid – Lezingen over ‘De Geheime Leer’

By Joy Mills (1920 – 2015).

76 Pagina’s | Eerste druk 1989 | Softcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 906175061X.

Engels origineel: Living in Wisdom – Lectures on ‘The Secret Doctrine’ | Eerste druk 1994, 2000 editie | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 9789061750680.

From Inner to Outer Transformation – Lectures on ‘The Voice of the Silence’

By Joy Mills (1920- 2015).

94 Pages | First edition 1996, reprint 2002 | Softcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland, Amsterdam | ISBN: 9061750830.

‘ Bestride the bird of life, if thou would’st know. ‘

It is the nature of a bird to fly upwards. When one moves to a higher position, for example to a mountain’s peak, one’s vision is greatly extended. There is much more to be seen from an airplane than from a train or an automobile. This does not mean, that the closer view of the terrain, which is seen when one is walking or driving in a car, is not important, but to gain a wider perspective of the entire area one wishes to explore, a view from the heights is essential.

The theosophical worldview gives a panoramic view, and this is an essential part of its uniqueness. Many philosophies and much of science start from a very limited view and stay there; for example, in some cases, the view is only of the physical world, and then the existence of anything beyond the physical or material is posited as perhaps plausible, but not very likely. On the other hand, the theosophical philosophy encourages us to gain the widest view possible, to start not with the physical, but with that which is the ground of our being, the ultimate reality underlying all phenomenal existence.

From Chapter II – ‘Waking up’ (p. 29):

” In the Voice of Silence, we are encouraged to take a wider view, the view a bird would have. And what is that view? From the theosophical perspective, it is a view of the universe. which brings about the profound realization of the unity of all existence. You realize, that our generation, of all generations that have lived on this planet, is the first to have seen our globe whole, that is there are no boundaries. Where are the boundaries? Where are the frontiers?

[…]

If our aim is as The Voice of Silence tells us, to ‘follow in the steps of holy Tathagata’, which is to take the Bodhisattva path, then we must see the world and all within it as does a Bodhisattva. It has been said, that a Bodhisattva sees the single thread, that unites all consciousnesses, all beings. […] We know, that there are groups in which there is ancestor worship. There is a truth in this, because the blood is symbolic of the living thread, which connects us with all ancestors and if one goes back far enough, there is only one ancestor, which is the Great Man, Purusha. We are all linked as bloodbrothers then. This was one of the great symbols in mediaeval time, to become bloodbrothers, to mingle the blood. ”

Quotes from the first chapter of this book:

Rooted in one ultimate reality, the universe and all within it proceed by a process of emanation into being. When we say “one ultimate reality” we should not really say “One,” because One implies two. So, rooted in a non-dual ultimate reality, the process was radiation through which emanation occurred and within that inherent lawfulness of the system gave rise to an evolutionary cycle of becoming, which in the human stage is self-directed and self-consciously chosen. The pivotal doctrine of the esoteric philosophy is that there are no special gifts in man, save those won by his own Ego [reincarnating self] throughout a long series of reincarnation and metempsychosis. This is important because it is not simply by living a certain number of lives, reïncarnation, that we come to transformation.
… Consciousness is primary. … Only in the human stage does consciousness become reflective upon itself and therefore self-conscious decision and effort become not only possible but constitute the priveleged choice and the responsible act of every human being. We must choose: responsibility is there.

Everyday Dharma – Seven Weeks to Finding the Buddha in You

by Lama Willa Miller

297 pages | Paperback | Quest Books, 2009 ISBN: 9780835608831

“This is the kind of handbook I wish I had in those early days. My gift to you … this is the start of your spiritual journey, of discovering within the sage that you really are. Are you ready?” — Lama Willa Miller

Everyday Dharma: Seven Weeks to Finding the Buddha in You offers a simple guide to achieving real and lasting personal transformation. This book appeals to any who are open to Buddhism in the broader context, whether one subscribes to a specific religious view or to no view at all. Dharma, a Buddhist term for the actions taken to find one’s inner-wisdom, is really a universal concept. “If wisdom were a destination,” Lama Willa says, “Dharma—played out in our thoughts and actions—is the path leading there.” By applying Dharma’s essential truths to the modern world, Everyday Dharma teaches you how to do the spiritual, emotional and psychological work in order to bring about day-to-day well-being. Lama Willa believes the art of being happy is the true enlightenment available to us all!

Dharma: De Wet van Ons Beste Wezen

18 Paginas’s | Brochure | Uitgegeven in 2008 | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland, Amsterdam | ISBN: 9789061750895.

Deze brochure onder de titel: Dharma: The Law of Our Best Being | Een artikel in The Theosophist, januari 2006 | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar.

The Search for Freedom

196 pages | Gebonden/Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House Adyar, 2000

This book consist of short essays dealing with various problems which mankind faces in daily life, within organizations, in society and politics in aspiration towards the spiritual life. The origin of those problems is identified in every case as lying not outside but within human beings themselves, in their unrealistic and self centred perception of people, things and events. Thus the solution of these problems also lies within each one of us.

De Scheppende Stilte – Oerpeinzingen over ‘De Stem van de Stilte’

Door Rohit Mehta, vertaald door Ir. A.J.H. Leeuwen.

Engels origineel: The Creative Silence | Uitgegeven in 1986 | The Theosophical Publishing House | ISBN: 9788170590170.

Healers and the Healing Process

Edited by George W. Meek.

304 Pages | A Quest Original, fourth printing 1986 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835604985.

A report on 10 years of research by 14 world famous investigators.

Arigo of Brazil – Tony Agpaoa of the Philippines – Olga Worrall – Rolling Thunder – these are a few of the world’s leading healers, who are participants in this dramatic study of paranormal healing. The art of healing is as old as the scourge of sickness. In today’s world, more and more people are paying attention to the healing methods of a few men and women, who appear to have performed ‘miracle cures’ on large numbers of people suffering from almost the complete spectrum of bodily ills.

This book provides a wide range of case histories and then compares them for common denominators in order to arrive at a rationale for the occurrence of such healings. It throws new light on the holistic nature of the healing process.

From the Preface:

” A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents die and a new generation grows up, that is familiar with it . . . ” – Max Planck (1858 – 1947).

The TAO-Teh-King – Sayings of Lao Tszu

By Lao Tse (601 BC – unknown), translated by C. Spurgeon Medhurst.

165 Pages | Original edition 1905, 2nd Quest book printing 1975 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835604306.

One of the great sages of history was a man named Lao Tzu, who was born in China in the year 604 B.C. He is regarded as the founder of the system of religion known as Taoism. His writings have been preserved in a small volume of poetry entitled Tao-Teh-King, which translated means ‘The Way and Its Power’, or ‘The Book of the Way and its Virtue’. It has also been called ‘A Scripture of the Eternal and Its Characteristics’, and it was adopted as a canon in the year 666 A.D. during the rule of the Emperor Kao Tsung of the T’ang Dynasty. Because of its sublime and timeless concepts, the Tao-Teh-King has endured through the centuries; it has been translated into many languages, and has been the subject of numerous volumes of philosophical and speculative literature.\

From Chapter 4 (p. 27):

” The TAO is as emptiness, so are its operations. It resembles non-fullness.

Fathomless! It seems to be the ancestor of all form. It removes sharpness, unravels confusion, harmonizes brightness, and becomes one with everything.

Pellucid! It bears the appearance of permanence. I know not whose son it is. Its Noumenon (εἴδωλον) was before the Lord. “

TAO Teh King – A Tentative Translation from the Chinese

Door Lao Tse (601 BC – unknown), vertaald door Dr. Isabella Meers.

105 Pages | First edition 1922, 3rd reprint 1983 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 0722903006.

The name ‘Lao Tsu’ means ‘old young’, so that on the very threshold of our study we find a paradox, and we may call the wonderful teacher ‘the old philosopher’, ‘the old child’ or ‘the young old man’. His family surname was Li. He wrote this book Tao Teh King, a book around which cluster much speculation and much literature in Chinese and other languages. The word ‘King’ we may leave out of count as it simply means classic, and was not given by Lao Tzu himself, but was added much later as a mark of respect.

From chapter XLVII (p. 67):

” Without going out of my door

I know the Universe

Without opening my window

I perceive Heavenly Tao

The more I go abroad, the less I understand

That is why the self-controlled man

arrives without going

names things without seeing them,

perfects without activity. “

The Wedding Song of Wisdom (Part of Echoes from the Gnosis)

By George R.S. Mead (1863 – 1933).

107 Pages | The Theosophical Publishing Society London and Benares, 1906| Photo copy | Kessinger Publishing Company, Montana U.S.A. | ISBN: 1564591557.

As to the contents and style of this Song, it must be confessed that we have to do with a poem of far less originality than the Hymn of the Robe of Glory, and I have taken it as a subject not so much for its intrinsic merits, as because it affords an opportunity to set forth some information on that great mystery, which was in antiquity generally known as the ‘Sacred Marriage’.

From page 74:

” The Rite of the Sacred Marriage must have been dramatically set forth in some of the inner rituals of the Christianized Gnosis. At any rate we definitely know that this was the case among the Marcosians, for Irenaeus (I. xxi 3), tells us:

Some of them prepare a Bridal Chamber and celebrate a mystery-rite with certain invocations on those who are being perfected; and they declare that what is being solemnized by them is a Sacred Marriage, in likeness with the Unions Above. “

The Hymn of Jesus (A Quest Miniature)

75 Pages | First published in 1907, Quest book edition 1973 | Paperback | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835604322.

According to Mead the translator of this beautiful Hymn of Jezus, there is strong reason to presume that this work is a very early Christian Mystery ritual. Perhaps the oldest Christian ritual preserved to us.

G.R.S. Mead was a renowned British scholar and a recognized authority on Christian origins and Gnostic and Hermetic literature. He died in 1933, but his works are still widely read. In his commentary on this Hymn in ritual form he has offered and interpretation of its inner, spiritual meaning.

If then, we have before us not a Hymn, but the remains of a mystery-ritual, there must have been two people in the circle. One of them was the Master, the Initiator. Who was the other? Manifestly, the one to be initiated. Now the ultimate end of all Gnosis was the at-one-ment or union of little man with the Great Man, of the human Soul with the Divine Soul… “

From Chapter I – ‘As Above, So Below’:

“Heaven above, heaven below; stars above, stars below; all that is above thus also below.”

– Kircher, Prodrom. Copt. pp. 193 & 275.

‘As above, so below’. Is this great ‘word’ a sacramental phrase, a saying of wisdom, an aphorism, a mystic formula, a fundamental law; or a two-edged sword of word-fence, that will probably do the wielder serious damage, if he is not first put through careful training in its handling – which?

Whether this saying is of Hermetic origin or no, we will not stay formally to inquire. In essence it is probably as old as human thought itself; and, as probably, the idea lying underneath it has been turned topsy-turvy more frequently than any other of the immortal company.

Did Jesus Live 100 B.C.?

By George R.S. Mead (1863-1933).

442 Pages | Photo copy of the first 1903 edition, The Theosophical Publishing Society, London & Benares | Kessinger Publishing Company, Montana U.S.A. | ISBN: 1564591301.

From I. – Foreword:

” When some five and a half centuries before the Christian era the Buddha arose in ancient Āryāvarta to substitute actuality for tradition, to break down the barriers of convention, and throw open the Way of Righteousness to all, irrespective of race or birth, we are told that He set aside the ancestral scriptures of His race and times and preached a Gospel of self-reliance and a freedom from bibliolatry that will ever keep His memory green among the independent thinkers of the world.

When the Christ arose in Judaea, once more to break down the barriers of exclusiveness and preach the Way to the ‘Amme ha-aretz’, the rejected of the ceremonialists and legal purists, we are told that He extended the aegis of His great authority over the ancient writings of His fellow-countrymen, and cited the Torah as the very Law of God Himself.

We are assured by Traditionalists that the Incarnation of Deity Itself, the very Giver of that Law, explicitly attested the genuineness of the Five Books; He with His inerrant Wisdom, asserted that Moses wrote them, just as it was believed by the people of His day. Whereas, if there be anything certain in the whole field of Biblical research, it is that this cannot be the whole truth of the matter.

It has been said in excuse, that the Christ did not come on earth to teach His disciples the ‘higher criticism’. This may well be so, and yet it is a fact of profound significance that, as we shall see in the course of the present enquiry, even in His day, this very Torah and much more the Prophets and Sacred Writings, were called in serious question by many. “

Concerning H.P.B. (Stray Thoughts on Theosophy)

By George R.S. Mead (1863-1933).

Pages | Photo copy | Reprinted from The Theosophical Review, Vol. XXXIV , 1904/1919 | Kessinger Publishing Company, Montana U.S.A. | ISBN: 1564592529.

I (Wisdom) love them that love me – Prov. viii, 17. Where there is mystery, it is generally supposed that there must also be evil. ” – Lord George Gordon Byron (1788 – 1824).

Let us for a few minutes turn our thoughts together to the woman without whom, in every probability, there would have been no Theosophical movement to-day as we understand it. Let us consider briefly the crude and blundering question: ‘Do you believe in Blavatsky?

To me this question sounds strange, sounds even if I may say so, vulgar. ‘Blavatsky’ No one who knew her, knew her thus tout court. For her enemies even, while she lived, she was Madame Blavatsky (1831 – 1891), or at least H.P. Blavatsky; while for her friends and lovers she was Helena Petrovna, or H.P.B., or the ‘Old Lady’ – which last once gave occasion to a pretty witticism of a friend, who slyly remarked that it would have been awkward had Madame been Monsieur.

Beyond Logic & Mysticism

By Tom McArthur.

144 Pages | First Quest Edition 1990 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835606597.

This is an exercise book not for the body, but for the mind. It comes complete with review puzles, questions and applications for the concepts introduced in each chapter. It’s less of a ‘how-to’ book, however, than a playground for the mind. Tom McArthur teaches a unitive approach to life as series of overlapping techniques and concepts, in clear, direct language.

In fact, this new book about thinking is easy to read, with plenty of helpful illustrations. Sages and saints throughout time have pointed the way to a more inclusive or unitive way of perceiving life that’s free from restraints that conditional thinking puts on us in our limited, everyday thinking. These common ways are too boxed-in, restrictive and non-inclusive. With unitive thinking, we transcend the normal limitations inherent in everyday modes of thought and refuse to be limited to one vision of how things are. At this level of thinking, one has two visions. The secret is allowing yourself enough ‘elbow room’ by accepting alternative views as valid. Unitive thinking, moreover, is waking from sleep of ordinary perception to the infinite possibilities of reality. It involves responding to differences we encounter in the world and realizing the unity within ourselves and the greater whole. The sense of separateness that divides us from others is the illusory result of limits we place on our thinking.

From Chapter 8 – ‘The Scale of Things’ (p. 113):

” In the beginning was darkness wrapped in darkness
And everything was unmanifest water;
Whatever was, that Unity, coming into being, hidden by the void,
Was kindled through the power of heat . . .

In the beginning this Oneness evolved . . .
Was there a below? Was there an above?
Scatterers of seed there were, and powers,
With energy beneath and impulse above.

Who knows truly? Who can here declare it?
Whence was it born, whence came this emanation?
By its coming forth the Gods came into being
But who knows where it came from?

Where this emanation came from –
Whether a God created it, or whether he didn’t;
Only its overseer in the highest heaven knows –
Or perhaps he does not know either. “

From Chapter 2 – ‘Gods and Heroes of Summer (p. 62):

A Midsummer Blessing at Stonehenge

” Though the thin rain lash the broad plain
And the sword-blade’s rimmed with mist,
Shake the bright light from the short night
Kiss the hele-stone in ancient tryst.

Thought the long tracks know no glad step
And the circle go unblessed,
From their long homes may the old ones
Welcome travelers upon their quest.

Though the keepers great no reaper,
And the grasses grow high,
May the Corn King dance his crop sign
In the barley, wheat and rye.

Though remembrance be a semblance
And the land thrums with wrong,
May the hele-stone be the leal throne
Where the sun awakens song.

Chorus:

Sun-stone’s kiss, Midsummer’s pleasure,
Welcome all and some.
At the hele-stone sing and gather,
Every blessed one. “

Sophia – Goddess of Wisdom, Bride of God

By Caitlin Matthews.

430 Pages | First Quest Edition 2001, third printing 2009 | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 9780835608015.

Sophia, or ‘Wisdom’ in Greek, has been revered in many forms throughout history. From the Dark Goddess of ancient Anatolia; to her Egyptian, Greek, Celtic, and Cabalistic manifestations; to her current forms as Mary and the orthodox St. Sophia. In the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas, Sophia sits with God until the creation. Then She falls into matter and becomes manifest in every atom, permeating all things ‘like the sparks that run through charcoal’, as Matthews says. While God is out there,” the Goddess is in here: the mother-wit of practical inspiration and compassion at the heart’s core.

‘ Anyone interested in the feminine face of God throughout the ages will find Sophia an illuminating experience. Caitlin Matthews’ scholarship connects us to past, present, and future in the very depths of our femininity. ‘  – Marion Woodman, Jungian analyst and author of Bone: Dying into Life.

From Chapter 1 – ‘The Black Goddess’ (p. 6):

” The Black Goddess lies at the heart of spiritual knowledge, which is why her image continually appears within many traditions as the Veiled Goddess, the Black Virgin, the Outcast Daughter, the Wailing Widom, the Dark Woman of Knowledge. Our own search for the Goddess is one, that is begun in darkness and unknowing. Ours is the knowing ignorance of the child in the mother’s womb: we have to be born, and we are frightened of the extra womb dimension. Once out of that womb, we begin to be terrified about our origins. But one of the prophecies of Sophia is: ‘I will give thee the treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places. ‘ Those treasures of the Divine Feminine liep deep within us, waiting to be discovered . . . “

When Elephants Weep – The Emotional Lives of Animals

By Jeffrey M. Masson and Susan McCarthy.

268 Pages | Published in 1996 | Softcover | Vintage, London | ISBN: 0099478919.

Fore more than 100 years, scientists have denied that animal experience emotions, yet this remarkable and ground-breaking book proves what animal-lovers have known to be true: wolves, giraffes, elephants, and many other creatures exhibit all kinds of feelings – hope, fear, shame, love, compassion. From Ola, the irritable whale, to Toto, the chimpanzee who nursed his owner back to health, this book collects together for the first time a vast range of case histories, which show the extraordinary complexity of the animal world, and the tumult of emotions that govern it.

From page 223:

” Freedom from exploitation and abuse by humankind should be the inalienable right of every living being. Animals are not there for us to drill holes into, clamp down, dissect, pull apart, render helpless and subject to agonising experiments. They are, like us, endangered species on an endangered planet, and we are the ones, who are endangering them, it and ourselves. They are innocent sufferers in a hell of our making. We owe it to them, at the very least, to refrain from harming them further. If no more, we could leave them be.

When animals are no longer colonised and appropriated by us, we can reach out to our evolutionary cousins. Perhaps then the ancient hope for a deeper emotional connection across the species barrier, for closeness and participation in a realm of feelings now beyond our imagination, will be realised. “

A Matter of Personal Survival – Life After Death

By Michael Marsh.

209 Pages | A Quest Original, first edition 1985 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. supported by the Kern Foundation | ISBN: 0835605965.

If perchance you have ever asked yourself the question: ‘What happens to me after I die (if anything)?’ then you will be interested in Dr. Marsh thoughtful conclusions. He has compiled a completely sensible piece of organized research that offers pro and con evidence concerning the possibility of ‘afterdeath life’. When you have finished reading about this Matter of Personal Survival, you will surely have a clearer picture of what (if anything) happens to you when your physical body is no longer operative.

But then you must ask yourself: ‘If I do survive, what must it be like to experience life without physical sensation? What exactly is it that remains and permits me to retain my sense of identity? These and other good questions together with clear and rational answers will be found in this unique study of the basic, bottomline enigma concerning our existence.

From Chapter 10 – ‘Approach to the Self’ (p. 54):

” From earliest times prophets and poets and philosophers have tried to analyze the nature of human be-ing. More recently psychologists, psychiatrists, sociologists and anthropologists have added their findings and opinions. Some have profferred a simple view. Plato compared the Soul of man to ‘a pair of winged horses and a charioteer’, one of the horses being ‘uptight and cleanly made . . . a lover of honor and modesty and temperance,’ while the other is ‘a crooked lumbering animal’ filled with lust and insolence and pride’. Freud, twenty-three hundred years later, favored a somewhat similar division , with a realistic ego attempting to guide a moral superego and a lustful id.

Among those, who prefer complex classifications, one might cite the psychologist Henry Murray. He worked up a list of twenty human needs, each one with complex definitions, which interact with sixteen kinds (and many sub-kinds) of environmental ‘press’. At the opposite extreme are radical behaviorists like B.F. Skinner, who assert that, apart from the genetic code, humans have no inner nature but only a ‘repertoire of behavior’ taught by the environment. “

The Science of Self-Realisation

By Śrī N.S. Marathey.

102 Pages | First edition 2002 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170594014.

In simple language, but with great insight, the evolutionairy journey of consciousness from the mineral through the human kingdom is traced. We learn of the gradual transition from primitive man, who is ruled by his sense organs, to the awakened individual, who has gained full command over them. With clarity and a clear understanding of the subject, the author describes how man’s initial identification with a separate self eventually gives rise to his merging with the all-pervading consciousness, which is the true goal of his life.

Sri Marathey is author of several theosophical books in Marathi. In this, his first publication in English, we are invited toexamine the fundamental nature of the universe as a dynamic interplay of matter, energy, space, time, consciousness and life.

Head and Heart – A Personal Exploration of Science and the Sacred

By Victor Mansfield (1941 – 2008).

285 Pages | First Quest Edition 2002 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. suppported by the Kern Foundation | ISBN: 0835608174.

This scientist’s search for spirit can change how we think and feel about what matters most.

It is possible to hope that modern science and ancient spiritual traditions can be integrated in some higher synthesis. Ravi Ravindra, a physicist and professor of Comparative Religion, says that such task is the most important of all, that can be undertaken by contemporary individuals, for on such a synthesis depends not only the global survival of man, but also the creation of the right environment, right both physically and metaphysically, for future generations.

Victor Mansfield agrees with Ravindra, that understanding the relationship between science and ancient spiritual traditions is of the utmost importance. However, he will argue that, given the nature of science and the sacred, a synthesis, in the sense of combining separate elements into one coherent whole, is impossible.

From Chapter 13 – ‘Pilgrim and Prodigal’ (p. 261):

” From the perspective of the indivisible, unchanging, or infinite aspect of Soul, all pairs of opposites are aspects of Soul’s unity. From this lofty position, there is no question of conflict between the head and the heart, masculine and feminine, the outer and inner worlds, or science and the sacred. All knowledge and experience are merely different aspects of the indivisible or unified Soul. From this view, the divine is as much in my innermost thoughts as in the farthest galaxies, and idea echoed by mystics around the world, an idea that makes the entire world truly sacred. Equally then, the pain of another is my pain; another’s joy is my joy. In this interplay of the infinite Soul and the finite Soul we can find the meaning of the great commandment, ‘Love thy neighbor as thyself. ‘ Limited and finite though I AM, in the Majestic unity of Soul I have the responsibility of relieving the pain of those around me. “

Reïncarnation in Christianity – A New Vision of the Role of Rebirth in Christian Thought

By Geddes MacGregor.

185 Pages | Copyright 1978, fourth Quest reprinting 1989 | Softcover | Quest Books U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835605019.

Is there room for the ‘rebirth concept’ in Christian dogma?

The question, that bothered Dr. MacGregor was quite basic: Can a Christian believe in reïncarnation and still remain loyal to the Bible and the Church? He decided to find some answers. He researched into the annals of Christian theory – cut through centuries of religious emotionalism – gathered his material together and reported his findings in this landmark work.

From Chapter III – Some Interpretative Considerations (p. 34 & 35):

” The myth of reïncarnation may be interpreted, then, in many different ways. Pythagoras, on the one hand, if we are to believe his biographer Diogenes Laertius, seems to have taken human rebirth literally, for (according to Diogenes), Pythagoras was accustomed to say he had formerly been Aethalides, then Euphorbus, and that he had been mortally wounded by Menelaus at the siege of Troy. Plato, on the other hand, as is well-known, used transmigration as part of the general mythological scenery available in his time; but how precisely he regarded it is unclear. We know only that he made use of the notion in presenting his own thought, as he made use of other popular myths of his day.

The myth of reincarnation has also, however, an obvious connection with what Professor Eliade has called the myth of eternal return, which represents the rythmn of birth, death and rebirth as a cyclic reality at the core of the whole universe. ‘According to this doctrine’, he writes, ‘the universe is eternal but it is periodically destroyed and reconstituted every Great Year. ‘ “

” There is a journey ahead that none of us can avoid – our last adventure, death and beyond. If you travel abroad, it is wise to take a map and a guide to the country. Most people face death totally unprepared. The Wholeness Principle – Dynamics of Unity within Science, Religion and Society

By Anna Lemkow.

322 Pages | Published in 1990, second Quest edition 1995 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835607151.

Dutch translation: Het Heelheid Principe – De Dynamiek van Heelheid in Wetenschap, Religie en Samenleving | Published in 1993 | Softcover, incl. index, word list & literature list | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland, Amsterdam | ISBN: 9061750660.

It becomes more and more clear, the present-day tendency of separation amongst civilizations and religions is forming a threat for the global survival of humanity. A philosophy, in which an emphasis is put on that ‘unity’ present behind separation is called ‘holism’. Holistic literature is characterized by the postulization of possible connections between religion (mysticism) and science (physics), yet inclusion of its societal dimension often seems to be forgotten. It is The Wholeness Principle, which discusses this societal dimension to an elaborative extent.

Annas Lemkow researches an enormous scala of subjects. First, she discusses the rise of modern science and its effects on our worldview. Then, she involves the spiritual dimension by mapping out similarities and differences existing amongst the major religions of our world, the relationship between religion and science and the place mysticism has in view of the whole of human knowledge. Finally, she carefully looks at societal developments that have taken flight as a result of the rapid implementation of technology, such as industrialism and automation. She sketches the peripheries of a political vision adjusted to the new world order: one in which humankind does finally acknowledge East and West, North and South cannot live without each other.

From Chapter 12 – ‘The Essential Unity of all Religions’:

” Whether we listen with aloof amusement to the dreamlike mumbo jumbo of some red-eyed witch doctor of the Congo, or read with cultivated rapture thin translations  from the sonnets of the mystic Lao-tse, or now and again crack the hard nutshell of an argument of Aquinas, or catch suddenly the shining meaning of a bizarre Eskimo fairy tale, it will be always the one, shapeshifting yet marvelously constant story that we find, together with a challenging persistent suggestion of more remaining to be experienced than will ever be known or told. “

Het Heelheid Principe – De Dynamiek van Heelheid in Wetenschap, Religie en Samenleving

Door Anna Lemkow.

416 Pagina’s | Uitgegeven in 1993 | Softcover, incl. index, woordenlijst & literatuurlijst | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland, Amsterdam | ISBN: 9061750660.

Engels origineel: The Wholeness Principle – Dynamics of Unity within Science, Religion and Society | Uitgegeven in 1990 | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835607151.
