The Mahā Chohan’s Letter

By Curuppumullage Jinarājadāsa (1875–1953).

30 Pages | First edition, second reprint 2004 | Paperback | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592593.

This ‘letter’, from the Adept known as the Mahā Chohan, to A.P. Sinnett, is in fact an abridged report of an interview with him. Short though it is, it contains practically the charter for the work and development of the Theosophical Society through the ages, according to Mr. Jinarājadāsa. His commentary provides the proper perspective to understand the importance of the letter.

Buddhism and Hinduism

By Henry Steel Olcott (1832 – 1907) and Anagārika Dharmapāla (1864 – 1934), edited by Venerable Dr. D. Rewatha Thero, General Secretary of the Maha Bodhi Society of India.

68 Pages | Published in 1996 | Softcover | Sattanam Printing Press, Varanasi | No ISBN.

In the recent times, some have shown interest in uniting, coming together of the Buddhist and the Hindus. ‘Truth’ has got to be stated in different terms, different codes of conduct need to be laid down for beings standing on different rungs of the evolutionairy ladder. No great Teacher ‘founded’ any religion. The term ‘religion’ is no good a translation of ‘Dharma’. It is the followers, who crystallized the sublime teachings into concepts, precepts and doctrines. Some went further to create dogmas and tried to impose them on others. Later, the priestcraft, as distinct from the true sannyasis, the true Bhikkhus, exploited the ignorant.

The path that one can follow depends to a large extent on the point, where one stands. For, the goal, if there be a goal, is a far distant horizon, unknown and unknowable to a mind full of limitations and self-created contradictions.

From page 17:

” For the first time in the history of the world, Buddha proclaimed a salvation, which each man could gain for himself and by himself in this world during this life, without the least help from personal God or Gods. He strongly inculcated the doctrine of self-reliance, of purity, of courtesy, of enlightenment of peace and of universal love. He strongly urged the necessity of knowledge, for without the wisdom the psychic insight could not be got in this life. Desire not to be born re-born again and again; nor for a cessation of existence in this one life; desire not for the enjoyment of sensuality. Lead a life of purity, seek only the fruits of the Fourfold Path of Holiness, which lead to Nirvana. These were the teachings of the Buddha. “

The Golden Rules of Buddhism

Compiled by Henry Steel Olcott (1832 – 1907).

28 Pages | First printed as Pamphlet in 1887, 2nd edition 1891, 3rd edition 1902, Adyar Pamphlet 1918, 1st reprint 1938, 2nd reprint 1944, 3rd reprint 1967, 4th reprint 1984 | Softcover | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 0835670783.

The too prevalent ignorance among adult Sinhalese Buddhists of the ethical code of their religion leads me to issue this little compilation. Similar moral precepts exist by hundreds in the Buddhist scriptures; from which also all the quotations in this little work are derived. Orientalists and other impartial persons admit that no religion in the world contains a more sublime system of moral values than Buddhism. But if we wish this to become known to Buddhist children, we, adult Buddhists, must take the task upon ourselves.

From page 12:

PARENTS, TEACHERS AND CHILDREN

” Parents should:

  1. Restrain their children from vice.

  2. Train them in virtue.

  3. Have them taught Arts and Sciences.

  4. Provide them with suitable wives and husbands (at least valid for the ancient times).

  5. Give them an inheritance. “

The Child

By Maria Montessori (1870 – 1952).

20 Pages | Reprinted from The Theosophist 1941, 10th reprint 1986 | Booklet | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170590302.

We all know that the age of development is the most important period of the whole life. Moral malnutrition and intoxication of the spirit are as fatal for the Soul of man as physical malnutrition is for the health of his or her body. Therefore, child-education is the most important problem of humanity.

From page 18:

” Certainly here is the key to all pedagogy: to know how to recognize the precious instinct of concentration in order to make use of it in the teaching of reading, writing and counting and, later on, of grammar, arithmetic, foreign languages, science, etc. After all, every psychologist is of the opinion that there is only one way of teaching, that of arousing in the student the deepest interest and at the same time, a constant and vivacious attention. So the whole thing resolves itself in this, to make use of those intimate and hidden forces of the child for his or her education. “

Light on the Path – And an Essay on Karma (Adyar Mini)

By Mabel Collins (1851 – 1927).

86 Pages | Third Adyar Edition, 1st reprint 2013 | Hardcover | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 9788170595823.

‘These rules are written for all disciples’. As we have it present, this book was dictated by Master Hilarion through the mediumship of Mabel Collins. Master Hilarion received it from his own teacher, the ‘Great One’, who among Theosophical students is sometimes called ‘The Venetian’; but even He is the author only of part of it. It has passed through three phases.

Light on the Path was the first of three treatises, which occupy a unique position in our Theosophical literature – directions from those who have trodden the Path to those, who desire to read it.

Gifts of the Lotus – A Book of Daily Meditations (Quest Miniature Series)

By Virginia Hanson.

191 Pages | 1974, fourth printing 1988 – A Quest Miniature | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835604500.

Here are 366 Meditations – one for each day of the year. Each from the heart of a spiritually oriented philosopher, from Plato to Emerson to Sri Aurobindo to a host of theosophical students and scholars. Inside of this miniature Quest book is a complete philosophy for living: quiet, short, engaging thoughts, each alive with the spirit of being. In truth, this is not a book to be studied. It is a book to be carried in the pocket or purse. It is a book to be treasured.

From page 41:

” 25.  A doctrine of ‘Truth’, presenting itself without proof on the bare value of its own nobility, is as disturbing a factor to the majority of men as would be the stranger without name or country. We are afraid of it; it is to us an invasion from an unknown world. And such it is; it is an invasion from another world, from the only real world, the world of Reality . . .

Inzicht is Nu – De Pocket Krishnamurti

Door Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895 – 1986), vertaald door Hans van der Kroft.

143 Pagina’s | Softcover 2012 | Synthese, een imprint van Milinda Uitgevers B.V. | ISBN: 9789062711079.

Engels origineel: The [Shambala] Krishnamurti Reader | 2009 editie | Krishnamurti Foundation Trust Ltd., Hampshire, England | ISBN: 9780834827592.

Truth, Beauty, and Goodness

81 pages | Paperback | Theosophical Publishing House, 2002

Truth, Beauty, and Goodness are interrelated. While beauty is the garment of truth, goodness is beauty revealed in action. Many philosophers and poets have spoken about the identity of these three aspects of reality, how each one leads to the other. Discovery of truth or beauty is the natural aspiration of every right thinking individual. Clarity and undisturbed serenity are essential requirements for perceiving truth. These qualifications cannot be acquired in the absence of pure and righteous living.

Praktische Mystiek – Voor Gewone Mensen

Engels origineel: Practical Mysticism – A Little Book for Normal People | Uitgegeven in 1914, reprint 1942, 2de reprint 2003 | Vintage Books, New York | ISBN 0375725709.

Consciousness: Its Nature and Action

By Nilakanta Sri Ram (1889 – 1973).

28 Pages | First edition 2002 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170593921.

In this lecture,, known for his deep understanding of philosophical questions, explores how consciousness loses its sensitivity and gets obscured, but has the potency of awakening into the full light of wisdom. He says: ‘We do not notice the beauty of a cloud or the movement of a leaf or bird and many other things. An artist is needed to paint a picture and point out the beauty‘.

How can we achieve union with the living beings around us, and even to a slight extent be open to the truth and beauty, which are inherent and omnipresent in life? This book offers insights into how the quality of our consciousness can be transformed so that it is constantly renewed, remaining open to the truth of life as it reveals itself.

Search for Values

By Soli J. Sorabjee.

19 Pages | Besant Lecture delivered at Adyar, Dec. 1992, first published in 1995 | Booklet | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592623.

The moral worth of a society or a community is reflected in its aspirations and the ideals it pursues, the values it cherishes and its sincerity in upholding those values, Throughout history, humanity’s chief concern has been the disovery and preservation of values, which impart grace and significance to civilization and also to individual human lives. One of the cruellest paradoxes of our times is that an age that has witnessed tremendous scientific progress and technological development has at the same time also witnessed unprecedented decline in moral and spiritual values.

I shall not live in vain

Or help one fainting robin unto its nest again

I shall not live in vain. “

Creative Living

By Ramjivan Sinha.

39 Pages | First edition 1970, first reprint 1993 | Booklet | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592267.

We learn from the study of Theosophy, the Ancient Wisdom, that while man is alive, his inner principles, namely Spirit, Intuition, Intellect, lower Manas and Kama, all are mixed together; that at our best moments we get some rays of Light or inspiration from the higher principles and we produce a beautiful work of art. And that there are moments when we fall back from such heights and are prone to karmic influences, which lead to contradictions in life. Very often, therefore, we find instances of self-indulgence, moral laxity or looseness, physical imbalance, loneliness or depression in the lives of artists. We are trying to discover ways of total creative living, in which there is no such contradiction, in which the life-stream flows freely and smoothly, in all its loveliness and beauty all the time . . .

From page 39:

” It has been said (above), that the constant openness of one’s being is an essential pre-requisite for discovery. To this may be added an attitude of constant helpfulness. As the plants and trees are pouring themselves out all the time for the joy of all around, so also the individual must learn to give, to serve and to sacrifice with joy. ‘What is the best that I can give or contribute? What way can I serve best’? Such questions the individual should, off and on, put to him or herself, in quiet moments and in solitude. The deep within will probably give the answer, and if one is open and alert, one will listen and discover one’s true vocation. “

A teacher is in reality the inner being by the side of God, in the region of Truth, clothed in Divine Mercy and Glory . . . Perfect discipleship consists in perfect Love for the beauty of the teacher’s Godly strength. O brother and sister, know for certain that this work has been before thee and me, and that each man and woman has already reached a certain stage! No one has begun this Work for the first time . . .

From page 82:

THE HEART

” There is a treasure buried in the heart of the knower, It is LOVE. A single jewel out of it is worth a thousand heavens. The guardian of heaven is an Angel named Rizwân, whereas the guardian of the treasure of LOVE is God. Know that thy merit is assured by what thou seekest. If thou worshippest to obtain heaven or avoid hell, thou worshippest thy own desires. If thou seekest or fearest an object, thou are the worshipper of that object. Thy real value depends on what is in thy heart. If thou heart is attached to God, thou art a divine man or woman. “

The Secret of the Ages – And Other Theosophical Essays

By Curuppumullage Jinarājadāsa (1875–1953).

69 Pages | First edition 1926, reprint 1927, second edition 1988 | Paperback | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | No ISBN.

‘The first edition was issued under the title The Mediator. Some of the titles of the essays included therein have been altered in this Volume to make them more meaningful. The essay The Mediator does not find a place in this edition; hence the change of the title of the book.

From Chapter 10 – The Secret of the Ages (p. 63):

” If only we will look rightly into our own heart, and listen to the still small voice there, we shall hear where our path lies, and we shall always see visions of our work. At the bottom of our nature we are unselfish, and we hunger to give. Even when we are reckless in selfishness, the soul’s cry at our depths is ‘Let me find how to give’. When, with increasing will, heart and mind are used to subdue the fierce thirst for sensation, then, evitably vistas appear of a work. For Soul and work are interchangeable terms, and the greater the work the more spiritual the Soul . . . “

In His Name

By Curuppumullage Jinarājadāsa (1875–1953).

64 Pages | Published in 1915 | Paperback |  Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170590159.

‘To the Master Koot Hoomi from his living son’.

From the Foreword:

” We met only for an hour, but I felt from the moment I saw you, that I had a message to give you. What that message is, you will find in the following pages. You have come to a point in your life when you feel you cannot any longer be fully of the world. You are established in an honourable career, and you know that time will bring you success and ease. But you already feel that you cannot work for success alone. You feel you must be an idealist in your profession, and be loyal to the ideal you see, even though it means suffering and humiliation. You are in the position that hundreds are in to-day, but you are different from them, in that you believe that the ideal which compels your obedience is not a thing of your imagination, but the first glimpse of a Personality whom you would like to call the Master. You feel that if this Master really exists and you could know hyim, then you could be utterly true to him in every way, regardless of what comes.

You know further that you cannot seek this Master by retiring into some monastic seclusion, in order that by meditation and contemplation there you might commune with him. You are not free to consider your welfare only, for there are those depending upon you for their needs. For their sakes you know you must engage in a worldly career. But while you are so engaged, you would like, if it be possible, at the same time to serve the Master is some way. It is because there is such a way, that I write these pages for you, and for others who are opening their eyes to those higher human possibilities which you have already seen.

Each human Soul has some message to givr to every other human Soul and what I wrtie is my message to you just now. It is not mine in reality, for it came to me from other human Souls, and I am giving to you as a brother what others as Brothers have given to me. “

Collected Poems

By Curuppumullage Jinarājadāsa (1875–1953).

122 Pages | Published in 1953 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | No ISBN.

This Volume of Poems by Jinarājadāsa is presented in fulfilment of a verbal promise made to him in 1949, further enjoined by a clause in his last Will, to the effect that after his death there should be published certain poems written in notebooks carefully preserved by him from 1909, when he first adopted the poetic method for giving expression to his feelings, thoughts and aspirations. Not many of these have previously appeared in print, although from time to time he has quoted a number to illustrate some point in a lecture or a book, and has on several occasions given readings from his poems to Theosophical audiences.

The poems in this collection have been grouped, where possible, according to classifications suggested by Mr. Jinarājadāsa himself. As for the others, they have been arranged under classifications into which they seem quite naturally to fall by reason of their subject matter. The author has always disclaimed any real poetic ability frankly admitting, ‘I am not a poet – yet.’

From page 5:

PEARL OF GREAT PRICE

” A Pearl of great price,
Lo, I have found it;
Heart on the Cross,
Yea, I have bound it.

Mine now the wide world’s
Sorrow and sadness,
Indivisible ever
From my life’s gladness.

Mine now the reaping
Of all men’s sowing,
Deep tribulations
Of age-long growing.

Rests on my shoulder
The world’s sad burden;
Of all men’s sorrows,
Sorrowless warden.

I the alchemist,
With the one solvent,
Woe to joy chanting
Yea, the At-onement.

Till at the reckoning
My Pearl and I render,
YOU discovering
With the surrender. “

LACRIMAE RERUM
(To ‘Little Flower’)

” This I see – that Nature is but a glass

Before which Form and Formless transient pass.

This I think – that a Hand unseen but kind,

To joys of Life my tranced eyes unbind.

This I feel – that life is a darkened room,

Where yearning I fulfil a weary doom.

This I know – that in inmost heart I cry

From life’s oppressive shadow-show to fly.

For this I AM: my flower-heart unfurled,

Turns to a Sun not of this shadow-world.

And so I cull the perfume of each thing,

And to you, dearest Shadow, tearful bring. “

For over half a century the poetry of England and the United States has been balefully influenced by the prevailing materialism of our age. They remind me of our Indian ants, who bite the yellow rind only and never penetrate into the sweet pulp. The Poetry of today with its rhythms and imageries appeals mainly to the mind. Not that they are not exquisite in their way; they can certainly do give delight. Yet nevertheless, it can be said of these poets:

‘Tis ye, ‘tis your estrang-ed faces,

That miss the many-splendoured thing’.

Of course here and there are a few exceptions like Alice Meynell, Francis Thompson, A.E. Yeats, Cousins and a few others. But in the main, I who love poetry greatly, have felt a profound dissatisfaction with the poems I have read.

From the Prelude:

” I AM a vagabond, but never ask me
From where I came.
I only know that I came like a shadow,
I’ll pass like a flame.
Every man that you meet on the roadway
And in the street,
Without his knowing hides a great vagabond’s
Tune in his feet.
What is the sun but a vagabond’s laughter?
What are the stars but a vagabond’s tears?
And the wide world is a wandering vagabond
Looking for some one through the long years. “

Praktisch Occultisme – Twee Verhandelingen

Door Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891), vertaald door Helma Kool.

52 Pagina’s | Uitgegeven in 1952, derde druk 1973 | Brochure | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland, Amsterdam | ISBN: 9789061750048.

Engels origineel: First Steps in Occultism, later published as Practical Occultism | Published in 1952, second edition 2011 | Softcover | ISBN: 9788170595595.

Practical Occultism

By Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891).

90 Pages | Second Edition 2011 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 9788170595595.

Dutch translation: Praktisch Occultisme – Twee Verhandelingen | Uitgegeven in 1952, derde druk 1973 | Brochure | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland, Amsterdam | ISBN: 9789061750048.

There are many people, who are looking for practical instruction in Occultism. It becomes necessary, therefore, to state once for all:

A) The essential difference between theoretical and practical Occultism; or what is generally known as Theosophy on the one hand, and Occult science on the other.

B) The nature of the difficulties involved in the study of the latter.

It is easy to become a Theosophist. Any person of average intellectual capacities, and a leaning toward the metaphysical; of pure, unselfish life, who finds more joy in helping his or her neighbour than in receiving help him- of herself, one who is ever ready to sacrifice his own pleasures for the sake of other people; and who loves Truth, Goodness and Wisdom for their own sake, not for the benefit they may confer – is a Theosophist.

But it is quite another matter to put oneself upon the path, which leads to the knowledge of what is good to do, as to the right discrimination of good from evil; a path which also leads a man to that power through which he can do the good he desires, often without even apparently lifting a finger.

From page 55:

” RISE early, as soon as your are awake, without lying idly in bed, half-waking and half-dreaming. Then, earnestly pray that all mankind may be spiritually regenerated, that those who are struggling on the Path of Truth may be encouraged by your prayers and work more earnestly and successfully. “
