De Adelaar in Zijn Vlucht

Door Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895 – 1986), vertaald door Henri W. Methorst en A.J.G. Methorst-Kuiper.

221 Pagina’s | Eerste druk 1974, tweede druk 2015 | Synthese, een imprint van Milinda Uitgevers B.V. | ISBN: 9788187326366.

Engels origineel: The Flight of the Eagle | Published in 1972, 2005 edition | Krishnamurti Foundation, London, England | ISBN: 9781596750012.

Leven zonder Gisteren of Morgen

By Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895 – 1986), vertaald door Hans van der Kroft.

174 Pages | Eerste druk 2015 | Synthese, een imprint van Milinda Uitgevers B.V. | ISBN: 9789062711185.

Engels origineel: As One is: To Free the Mind of All Conditioning | 2007 edition | Krishnamurti Foundation Trust Ltd., Hampshire, England | ISBN: 9781890772628.

The Voice of the Silence (Golden Jubilee Edition) 2nd repr.

By Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891).

236 Pages | Softcover | Golden Jubilee Edition 2nd repr. 2005 | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN 8170593719.

Dutch translation: De Stem van de Stilte, in: Drie Wegen, Eén Pad | Door Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895 – 1986), Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891) en Mabel Collins (1851 – 1927), vertaald door Louis Geertman en Ali Ritsema | Eerste druk 2006 | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 9061750881.

The Voice of the Silence was published for the first time in 1889. Since then it has been reprinted numerous times and translated into many languages. It was H.P. Blavatsky’s most precious book and last great effort in this world. The last service rendered to Those, whose mouthpiece she was and to their work for the moral and mental upliftment of humanity. It is one of the world’s most inspiring books, a prose poem that moves us by an appeal to the divinest instincts of our nature.

From Fragment I, page 109:

” 18. This earth , O ignorant disciple, is but the dismal entrance leading to the twilight that precedes the the valley of true LIGHT – that LIGHT, which no wind can extinguish, that LIGHT, which burns without a wick or fuel.

19. Saith the Great Law: In order to become the KNOWER of ALL-SELF, thou hast first of Self to be the knower. To reach the knowledge of that Self, thou hast to give-up self to non-self, being to non-being, amd then thou canst repose between the wings of the Great Bird. Aye, sweet is rest between the wings of that which is not born, nor dies, but is the AUM throughout eternal ages. “

The Path of Healing – Finding Your Soul’s Potential

By H.K. Challoner.

179 Pages | Published in 1972, third Quest edition 1990 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835606627.

Learn to tune in at Will to the wavelength of your Soul.

We have remarkable inner resources for health and healing. We can learn to draw on the power of our Souls to breathe fresh life into ourselves. However, emotions like self-pity and resentment get in the way. These ‘recalcitrant selves’ can become deeply entrenched and hard to overcome. Too much self-concern is another barrier. Empathy with others and absorption in creative activity can help free us. Meditating on our place in the Unity if Being weakens the seeds of illness in the seemingly separated self. As we open to the flow of the soul’s energy, we become healed and transformed.

Author Challoner in the guise of a channeled Teacher shares such healing ideas with a patient. New healthful attitudes are prescribed, as well as meditations and exercises like these:

  • Remind yourself constantly that this personality, which so often constricts, binds and thwarts your desires and aspirations and colors all your conscious acts and thoughts, is no more than the swathes of matter, in which the true ‘you’ has temporarily clothed its bright form.
  • Open yourself out to every impulse coming from the Soul, and so learn to transcend barriers of the senses, which obstruct your efforts to identify yourself with the universal Spirit.
  • Breathe, drawing mentally the vital air or morning into the furthest recesses of your being. While so doing, dedicate yourself to the Lord of all things, from whom alone come the regenerative forces of light and love. Feel them pouring in through your Soul, and affirm to yourself, that they can lead and guide you . . . rightly.
  • Try to visualize the whole vast cosmos as one pulsating, dynamic, creative field of consciousness . . . wherein all must be known by all in some process of timeless participation.

Frodo’s Quest – Living the Myth in The Lord of the Rings

By Robert Ellwood.

159 Pages | Copyright 2002 by The Theosophical Publishing House in America | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. – ISBN 0835608239

‘Frodo is Everyman’, Lord of the Rings film director Peter Jackson observed at the 2002 Academy Awards ceremony. That is the seminal idea of this unique book exploring the esoteric spiritual meaning of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy, which has impacted the inner lives of millions of readers, since it was first published in 1954.

Robert Ellwood, a scholar of world religions, finds ancient wisdom in this twentieth-century bestseller concerning the quests we are all called to go on. ‘Like Frodo‘, he says, ‘we each experience challenges that propel us on our own adventure – finally that of exploring the inner worlds and the meaning of our lives.’

Revisiting Middle-earth as a realm for personal discovery, Ellwood presents Tolkien’s story as a tale of every reader’s higher consciousness, death and rebirth, and triumph over evil. He teaches us also to recognize the characters as archetypes we can meet in ourselves: a spiritual guide like Gandalf, a friend like Sam, or, heaven forbid, shadows like Orcs or Ringwraiths. He also provides meditational exercises to help us overcome the trials we face as we make our lives into great journeys instead of dull routine. So be it! Let the Quest begin!

From Chapter 4 – ‘The Weight of the Past’ (p. 59):

” Whether we are aware of it or not, we are voyagers on a pilgrimage across the seas of space and time, gradually riding with the tides back through storm and sun and to the Halls of Light, our true home, whence we came. But like mariners tacking about on that long crossing, in the anxiety of our separateness we think more of personal action and response than we contemplate oneness. When the self-centered impulse reaches the level of the evil Wizard’s fear, hatred, and power, it amounts to rebellion against the One, and in the dark waters we see the wake of Satan or Sauron. More often, our hopes, we manage to keep the distant polar constellations to starboard as we bear toward the Uttermost West. “

Evolution of the Higher Consciousness – An In-depth Study into H.P. Blavatsky’s Teachings

By Pablo Sender.

201 Pages | First edition 2018 | Hardcover (cloth) | Fohat Production, Ojai, California.

Who are we? What is the purpose of life? How do we actualize our potential? These are the questions that thoughful people have asked since time immemorial. Evolution of Higher Consciousness is a comprehensive study of the teachings of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831- 1891) on these issues.

Madame Blavatsky, co-founder of the Theosophical Society, was the pioneer of the esoteric renaissance that took place at the end of the nineteenth century. Ever since, her writings have served as foundational source for modern spirituality. In his book, Pablo Sender presents Blavatsky’s profound but frequently puzzling statements systematically and in clear, concise language. He throws light on the nature of our spiritual essence, its evolutionairy unfoldment, and the work that we can do in daily life to consciously participate in this cosmic journey.

From page 178:

“Within yourself is the light . . . The light of the higher self and of the Mahatma are not different from each other.

In the presence of the Master the lower nature is spontaneously transformed. This is why in the taijasic state there is no need to fight, control or manipulate the lower. Passions and afflictions are powerful only when the pure awareness identifies with them. This practice, along with the a general ‘effort’ at leading a spiritual life, will eventually make the temporary state of ‘manas taijasa” more and more available, until it becomes permanent in the union of buddhi-manas. When we are aware of our innate divine Wisdom, conscious of our identity with everything , and aware of our transcendental and immutable nature, the human evolutionairy pilgrimage comes to an end. New field of self-expression open up to the liberated consciousness, which now becomes a beneficent force aiding human and planetary evolution.

.  .  .

Joy unto ye, O Men of Earth.

A Pilgrim hath returned back ‘from the other shore’.

A Saviour of Mankind is born.

The Path of Transformation – Voyage to the Silent Self

By Susan Bayliss.

35 Pages | Soft cover | Blavatsky Lecture 2014 | The Theosophical Publishing House, London.

Life is full of potentiality from ‘the circle of heaven’ to Mother Earth and all that live within her. The extent of this potential is hidden from us in our mundane world, concealed, according to the ‘Ancients’, behind a veil of illusion in which we live and experience our everyday lives. Out of nothingness came the ‘Great Illusion’ into a state of potentiality awaiting the impulse to become an expression of new life – a new universe. The same potentiality also lies within us and we too can awaken to a ‘new world’; a world in which we are transformed from a place of ignorance to a state of Knowledge and Wisdom. Our taks is to find the keys which open the the doorway to the higher life. Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891) (HPB) in the Secret Doctrine (SD) describes the process of Life awakening at cosmic level, from potential space to the abstract space of ‘divine immaculate Mother-Nature’.

From page 29:

” In The Key to Philosophy, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891) tells us that the final goal cannot be reached in any way but through life experiences, and because most of this consists of pain and suffering, this is how we learn. Many of us will have seen the photograph of Einstein sittings at his desk with a copy of The Secret Doctrine lying there along with other books. He famously said that ‘The intellect has little to do on the road of discovery. There comes a leap in consciousness, call it intuition or what you will, and the solution comes to you and you don’t know how or why. All great discoveries are made in this way. “

Het Proces van Zelf-Transformatie – Onderzoek van Ons Hogere Potentieel om Effectief te Leven

Door Vicente Hao Chin, Jr.

300 Pagina’s | Eerste druk december 2017 | Softcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging Nederland, Amsterdam | ISBN: 9789061750994.

English Original: The  Process of Self-Transformation – A Spiritual Guide for Effective Living | First edition, 2015 | Quest Books U.S.A. | ISBN: 9780835609357.

73 Pagina’s | Eerste druk mei 2015, 2de druk feb. 2018 | Paperback | Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland, Amsterdam

Oorspronkelijke titel: Les Marches d’Or de Helena P. Blavatsky  – Commentées par Danielle Audoin.

Men zegt meestal: De Gulden Treden van HPB.

Light on the Path – And an Essay on Karma (Adyar Mini)

86 Pages | Third Adyar Edition, 1st reprint 2013 | Hardcover | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar

‘These rules are written for all disciples’. As we have it present, this book was dictated by Master Hilarion through the mediumship of Mabel Collins (1851 – 1927). Master Hilarion received it from his own teacher, the ‘Great One’, who among Theosophical students is sometimes called ‘The Venetian’; but even He is the author only of part of it. It has passed through three phases.

Light on the Path was the first of three treatises, which occupy a unique position in our Theosophical literature – directions from those who have trodden the Path to those, who desire to read it.

This work sets out to empasize the inner life as a constant moving on and the mover as a pilgrim travelling along an ancient Way. This Way to ulimate Reality was called by Gautama the Buddha the Middle Way, the path between the introverted life of contemplation and the extrovert life of action in the world of men. The Pilgrim Soul – A Path to the Sacred, Transcending World Religions

120 Pages | First Quest Edition and printing, 2014 | Soft cover | Quest Books, USA

na vijānāmi yadivedamasmi niṇyaḥ samnaddho manasā carāmi.

” I know not whether I am the same as this cosmos: a mystery am I, yet burdened by mind, I wander. “

  • Rig Veda 1.164.37

From the Preface:

“There are two great mysteries: idam and aham, ‘cosmos’ and ‘myself’. What indeed is the person in this vast cosmos? In all the great traditions there are people, monuments, documents and ceremonies that can assist searchers. The Rig Veda is among the very earliest documents in which the sages speak of the call of Satyam, Ritam, and Brihat – ‘Truth’, ‘Order’ and ‘Vastness’. Similar mysteries are spoken of in Psalm 8: ‘When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, / the moon and the stars, which thou has ordained; / What is man, that thou art mindful of him?’

Throughout my life, I have been struck by the mysteries these quotations articulate. This is perhaps true for each of us: we cannot not be engaged by such questions. The search to understand and to stand under these mysteries is the pilgrimage for every person and within every tradition.”

Man’s Supersensory and Spiritual Powers

193 Pages | First Edition, 7th Reprint 2005 | Paperback | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar

Man undoubtedly possesses, in however rudimentary a form, certain supersensory powers. Their unfoldment can be hastened through Raja Yoga as the chief means. Included in this volume are talks by the author broadcast over the air in Australia. They are a guide to managing human life and developing the character needed for such unfoldment. However it is not the development of psychic powers that is man’s supreme goal, but ‘Self-realization’. Psychic powers are only by-products in the spiritual process of seeking ‘Realization’ and are not ends in themselves . . .

Inzicht is Nu – De Pocket Krishnamurti

Door Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895 – 1986), vertaald door Hans van der Kroft.

143 Pagina’s | Softcover 2012 | Synthese, een imprint van Milinda Uitgevers B.V. | ISBN: 9789062711079.

Engels origineel: The [Shambala] Krishnamurti Reader | 2009 editie | Krishnamurti Foundation Trust Ltd., Hampshire, England | ISBN: 9780834827592.

City of Secrets – One Woman’s True-life Journey to the Heart of the Grail Legend

By Patrice Chaplin.

336 Pages | First Quest edition 2008 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 9780835608718.

City of Secrets is, perhaps, the very first nonfiction title to combine the stories of the legendary Grail phenomenon with that of a modern-day love story.

In 1955, fifteen-year-old Patrice flees her predictable English life for sun-drenched Girona, a pre-Roman town in northern Spain. There, she falls in love with José, whose mission is to preserve the town’s ancient Caballistic tradition. Over the years, Patrice returns again and again to her lover and Girona. She meets enthralling characters and hears of visions, an oddly wealthy priest, a fabulous garden owned by a Frenchwoman, and two towers aligned to create a portal to another dimension. The priest is no other than the Abbé Saunière of Rennes-le-Château, and the mysteries linked to him are at the heart of the Grail phenomenon. People Patrice thought she knew well turn out to belong to a secret society guarding Saunière’s legacy. Now it is time, they say, to reveal their secrets, and they ask her to be the messenger.

In support of her revelations, Patrice provides copies of previously unreleased letters, written by Saunière, along with other documented evidence. Her romantic and lucid writing style, which has often been compared to Beat Generation legend Jack Kerouac, will leave readers with no doubt that this book is one-of-a-kind.

Patrice first went to the ancient Spanish town of Girona in 1955 as a fifteen-year-old girl. She fell in love with the town and with Jose, its favorite son. Over the years, as she returns again and again, she sees and hears many unusual things: people talking about a wealthy priest named Abbé Saunière of Rennes-le-Château, an old house with an amazing garden owned by a mysterious Frenchwoman, a strange ceremony in this house, and several intriguing characters, including Jean Cocteau. Later, in 2003, Patrice finally starts to make sense of everything she has seen. Her lifelong friend and former lover, Jose, has a heart attack, and decides it’s time to reveal the secrets he has been guarding from the world. She learns that a private society has for generations held Saunière’s letters and documents after his death in 1917. She also learns Jose has been the society’s custodian for many years. Jose tells Patrice the secret is not in Rennes-le-Château and that it is now her duty to discover the rest. Patrice Chaplin is an internationally renowned playwright and author who has published more than 25 books, plays, and short stories. Her most notable work includes Albany Park, Siesta, which was made into a film staring Jodi Foster and Isabella Rossellini, Into the Darkness Laughing, Hidden Star, Night Fishing, and Death Trap.

Niet in Tempels – Laatste Toespraken in Bombay, 1985

By Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895 – 1986), vertaald door Hans van der Kroft.

94 Pagina’s | Eerste druk 2011 | Softcover | Synthese, een imprint van Milinda Uitgevers | ISBN: 9789062710966.

Engels origineel: That Benediction is where You are – The last Bombay talks 1985 | Uitgegeven in 2001 | Krishnamurti Foundation Trust Ltd., Hampshire, England | ISBN: 978-8187326281.

Come Unto Me – And Other Writings

By Ernest Egerton Wood  (1883 – 1965).

167 Pages | First edition 2000 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 817059426X.

Nearly every page of this book contains ‘gems of truth’ like the below – expressed simply, clearly and with gentle humour:

” I have not yet found the person, who does not teach me what not to do, as well as what to do “ – From Chapter 4: ‘Brotherhood’.

The truly great are not the abnormal, the miracle workers, but those whose lives are orderly and harmonious. ” – From Chapter 6: ‘Pleasure, Pain and Happiness’.

Every finite thing and experience has it infinite pole, so that through a falling leaf or the song of a frog we may march straight into the unlimited and free. ” – From Chapter 10: ‘A Garden by the Water blows’.

” The only way to truth is to pratice truth itself ” – From Chapter 12: ‘The Pathless Land’.

From Chapter 2: ‘ Theosophical Beliefs’ (p. 18 & 19):

” Every human being has his or her own karma. Out of it, he must make beauty, just as the lotus comes out of the mud. Let him use his own thought, his own love, his own will, in those circumstances, which are his karma – no matter what that karma may be – and out of that will come the triumph of life over form. There will be something beautiful there, and in himself will come the intuition of life itself, so that he suddenly knows that he is life, and life is joy and freedom. Let him not make a mistake as though the lotus seed were to say: ‘I do not like this mud; I want golden sands in which to grow’, nor the materialistic mistake of thinking that the triumph of his life over forms means that he should do what are called ‘big’ things, or great things. Quality is the sign of the spirit, not quantity. “

Yogic Practice – Yama and Niyama

By S.S. Varma.

28 Pages | First edition 1991, first reprint 2002 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170591805.

Dutch translation: De Beoefening van Yoga – Yama en Niyama (1995, 2011) | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland.

Yoga literally means ‘unification’, unification of the individual soul and the Oversoul and herewith unification of all that is. Everybody realizes he or she is one with the Divine, thus should realize he or she is one with everybody else. This is spirituality. Although this total unification marks its final goal, ‘yoga’ could be understood as much as ‘the way towards’.

This booklet includes rules of ethical behavior. Yama comprises virtues, such as abstaining oneself from violence, lies and betrayal, robbery, unchastity and greed. Niyama covers living up to these commandments relating to purity, contentment, abstinence, self-study and self-surrender to God. In this little publication, Varma reveals the true essence of these virtues.

From page 17:

” Before dealing with the five elements of Niyama, it may be useful to consider the distinction between the Yamas and the Niyamas. Both seem to point at a common purpose – the transmutation of the lower nature to serve as a suitable vehicle of the Divine Life. The practices included in Yama are moral and prohibitive and lay the foundation of a yogic life, while those in Niyama are disciplinary and constructive in character and aim at organizing the life of the spiritual aspirant. “

De Beoefening van Yoga – Yama & Niyama

Door S.S. Varma.

26 Pagina’s | Eerste druk 1995, tweede druk 2011 | Brochure | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 9789061750918.

Engels origineel: Yogic Practice – Yama and Niyama (1991, 2002) | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar,

Teachings on Discipleship – As outlined in the Mahatma Letters

By S.S. Varma.

119 Pages | First edition 1995 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN 8170592674.

The letters of the Mahatmas were received sometimes phenomenally and at other times in the ordinary way by post. They were not written in the usual way but precipitated. Though they are more than a hundred years old, and deal with persons no longer living and events long passed, the wisdom communicated through them is timeless. The story of the beginning of the correspondence and its continuance is inextricably bound with the history of the Theosophical Society. Probably there is nothing so unique in theosophical literature as these letters by the Adepts, who inspired the formation of the Theosophical Society and whose messenger Madame H.P. Blavatsky (HPB) was.

From Chapter 4 – ‘The Way to the Masters’ (p. 71):

” The popular idea that the Guru helps at times of difficulties probably is not quite correct. HPB was cured several times, but it has to be specially noted that it was not to help her, but in the interest of the work. In her own battles, she was left to her own devices. Thus it has been made clear that right up to Adeptship one has to depend on oneself alone:

The fact is, that to the last and supreme initiation every ‘chela’ – (and even some adepts) – is left to his or her own device and counsel. We have to fight our own battles, and the familiar adage – ‘the adept becomes, he is not made’, is true to the letter. “

By S.S. Varma.

142 Pagina’s | Hardcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland, 2001 | ISBN 9061750814.

English original: Teachings on Discipleship – as outlined in the Mahatma Letters, The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar.

We lezen:

Hammering Hot Iron – A Spiritual Critique of Bly’s ‘Iron John’ (1990)

By Charles Upton.

246 Pages | First Quest Edition 1933 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 083560697X.

Hammering Hot Iron is a rare work, that raises important questions, draws vital distinctions, and elevates discourse within the spiritual community on the Men’s Movement, Jungian psychology, archetypical and mythological studies, and polytheistic religions. Drawing on the perennial philosophy, the universal expression of absolute truth, Upton offers a metaphysical and cultural critique of Robert Bly’s Iron John (1990). Upton adopts Bly’s shadow in the Jungian sense. His intellectual argument is masterfully intertwined with his own personal and spiritual journey, often expressed through original poetry.

From Chapter – ‘The Rejection of Transcendence (p.15):

” The Men’s Movement is a cultural phenomenon unique to our time. We’ve reached the point as a society, where the assumption that man are the dominant sex no longer protects them from a sense of radical imbalance and alienation. As almost anyone who looks can see, the storm of cultural and technological change now assaulting us had called all traditional male roles into question and replaced them with cartoonlike creatures. Caricatures, however, are not enough to live by. […] But what would it be like if men were simply – men? This is the question the Men’s Movement is trying its best to answer, on the wing in any way it can. The tradition of working consciously to redefine masculinity in the face of radical social transformation goes back at least as far as D.H. Lawrence, and includes, among others, writers like Henry Miller and perhaps Jack Kerouac. “

De Yoga-Sūtra’s van Patañjali

By Iqbal Kishen Taimni (1898–1978).

A teacher is in reality the inner being by the side of God, in the region of Truth, clothed in Divine Mercy and Glory . . . Perfect discipleship consists in perfect Love for the beauty of the teacher’s Godly strength. O brother and sister, know for certain that this work has been before thee and me, and that each man and woman has already reached a certain stage! No one has begun this Work for the first time . . .

From page 82:

THE HEART

” There is a treasure buried in the heart of the knower, It is LOVE. A single jewel out of it is worth a thousand heavens. The guardian of heaven is an Angel named Rizwân, whereas the guardian of the treasure of LOVE is God. Know that thy merit is assured by what thou seekest. If thou worshippest to obtain heaven or avoid hell, thou worshippest thy own desires. If thou seekest or fearest an object, thou are the worshipper of that object. Thy real value depends on what is in thy heart. If thou heart is attached to God, thou art a divine man or woman. “

Paths to Wholeness (Study Guide)

By Willamay Pym.

39 Pages | Copyright 1989 by The Theosophical Society in America | A4 Study Course | Quest Books, U.S.A. | No ISBN.

The course may be studied by an individual. In this case, the keeping of a journal, supplemental reading, and a willingness to discuss the material with others will be most useful in deepening and broadening one’s insights. Prior to each lesson is a section entitled ‘Preparation for Lesson…’ Many of the articles listed in these sections are from the American Theosophist special issues or from Quest Magazine.

From page 37:

” The desire for wholeness develops within the framework of human love. It is only when love has been sufficiently developed by means of different kinds of temporary relationships between different fragments of the Divine Life (that means us) that the love for the whole is born within it. Then, instead of seeking satisfaction in this piecemeal manner, the fragment seeks it in the whole and through the whole in other fragments . . . This coming together in whatever measure it may be achieved is the only source of happiness, bliss or ananda there is in this world. Love is the very nature of the Divine, the unity which is the One Reality. It alone is the force, which causes the unreal to be drawn into the Real – the many into the One. “

From Inner to Outer Transformation – Lectures on ‘The Voice of the Silence’

By Joy Mills (1920- 2015).

94 Pages | First edition 1996, reprint 2002 | Softcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland, Amsterdam | ISBN: 9061750830.

‘ Bestride the bird of life, if thou would’st know. ‘

It is the nature of a bird to fly upwards. When one moves to a higher position, for example to a mountain’s peak, one’s vision is greatly extended. There is much more to be seen from an airplane than from a train or an automobile. This does not mean, that the closer view of the terrain, which is seen when one is walking or driving in a car, is not important, but to gain a wider perspective of the entire area one wishes to explore, a view from the heights is essential.

The theosophical worldview gives a panoramic view, and this is an essential part of its uniqueness. Many philosophies and much of science start from a very limited view and stay there; for example, in some cases, the view is only of the physical world, and then the existence of anything beyond the physical or material is posited as perhaps plausible, but not very likely. On the other hand, the theosophical philosophy encourages us to gain the widest view possible, to start not with the physical, but with that which is the ground of our being, the ultimate reality underlying all phenomenal existence.

From Chapter II – ‘Waking up’ (p. 29):

” In the Voice of Silence, we are encouraged to take a wider view, the view a bird would have. And what is that view? From the theosophical perspective, it is a view of the universe. which brings about the profound realization of the unity of all existence. You realize, that our generation, of all generations that have lived on this planet, is the first to have seen our globe whole, that is there are no boundaries. Where are the boundaries? Where are the frontiers?

[…]

If our aim is as The Voice of Silence tells us, to ‘follow in the steps of holy Tathagata’, which is to take the Bodhisattva path, then we must see the world and all within it as does a Bodhisattva. It has been said, that a Bodhisattva sees the single thread, that unites all consciousnesses, all beings. […] We know, that there are groups in which there is ancestor worship. There is a truth in this, because the blood is symbolic of the living thread, which connects us with all ancestors and if one goes back far enough, there is only one ancestor, which is the Great Man, Purusha. We are all linked as bloodbrothers then. This was one of the great symbols in mediaeval time, to become bloodbrothers, to mingle the blood. ”

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Quotes from the first chapter of this book:

Rooted in one ultimate reality, the universe and all within it proceed by a process of emanation into being. When we say “one ultimate reality” we should not really say “One,” because One implies two. So, rooted in a non-dual ultimate reality, the process was radiation through which emanation occurred and within that inherent lawfulness of the system gave rise to an evolutionary cycle of becoming, which in the human stage is self-directed and self-consciously chosen. The pivotal doctrine of the esoteric philosophy is that there are no special gifts in man, save those won by his own Ego [reincarnating self] throughout a long series of reincarnation and metempsychosis. This is important because it is not simply by living a certain number of lives, reïncarnation, that we come to transformation.
… Consciousness is primary. … Only in the human stage does consciousness become reflective upon itself and therefore self-conscious decision and effort become not only possible but constitute the priveleged choice and the responsible act of every human being. We must choose: responsibility is there.
Joy Mills has been a member of the Theosophical Society since 1940 and has served as General Secretary of the American Section and the Australian Section, and she was International Vice-President of the T.S.. She was director of the Krotona Institute School of Theosophy in Ojai, California. Her lecture tours have taken her to more than 50 countries.

The Wedding Song of Wisdom (Part of Echoes from the Gnosis)

By George R.S. Mead (1863 – 1933).

107 Pages | The Theosophical Publishing Society London and Benares, 1906| Photo copy | Kessinger Publishing Company, Montana U.S.A.

As to the contents and style of this Song, it must be confessed that we have to do with a poem of far less originality than the Hymn of the Robe of Glory, and I have taken it as a subject not so much for its intrinsic merits, as because it affords an opportunity to set forth some information on that great mystery, which was in antiquity generally known as the ‘Sacred Marriage’.

From page 74:

” The Rite of the Sacred Marriage must have been dramatically set forth in some of the inner rituals of the Christianized Gnosis. At any rate we definitely know that this was the case among the Marcosians, for Irenaeus (I. xxi 3), tells us:

Some of them prepare a Bridal Chamber and celebrate a mystery-rite with certain invocations on those who are being perfected; and they declare that what is being solemnized by them is a Sacred Marriage, in likeness with the Unions Above. “

C.W. Leadbeater (1854 – 1934), eminent seer and occultist, writes in this book of the Perfected Men, the Masters, ‘Men beyond mankind‘, whose existence ‘is one of the most important of the many facts, which Theosophy puts before us’.

Drawing on his personal experiences, the experiences of others, and the teachings of the religions, the mystics and the saints, he writes about the personalities of the Masters, their homes, their work, their nature and their powers. He also decribes the various stages on the Path the aspirant has to thread to reach them, from probation to acceptance as their disciple, and beyond.

The Hidden Side of Things

560 Pages | Third edition, 2nd reprint 2012 | Paperback | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar

” A classic work of clairvoyant investigation. “

Why is there so much Chaos in this world? This book may help the reader to understand the influence thoughts and actions have on the way we relate to our inner selves, to human and non-human beings and to the universe.

From Chapter One:

“The term ‘occultism’ is one which has been much misunderstood. In the mind of the ignorant it was, even recently, synonymous with magic, and its students were supposed to be practitioners of the black art, veiled in flowing robes of scarlet covered with cabalistic signs, sitting amidst uncanny surroundings with a black cat as a familiar, compounding unholy decoctions by the aid of satanic evocations.

Even now, and among those whose education has raised above such superstition as this, there still remains a good deal of misapprehension. For them, its derivation from the Latin word ‘occultus’ ought to explain at once, that it is the science of the hidden; but they often regard it contemptuously as nonsensical and unpractical […] Students, who should know better, perpetually speak as though the hidden side of things were intentionally concealed, as though knowledge with regard to it ought to be in the hands of all men, but was being deliberately withheld by the caprice or selfishness of a few: whereas the fact is, that nothing is or can be hidden from us by our own limitations, and that for every man as he evolves, the world grows wider and wider, because he is able to see more and more of its grandeur and its loveliness.”

The Pathway to Perfection – A Treatise on the Path of Swift Unfoldment

By Geoffrey Hodson (1886 – 1983).

70 Pages | First edition, fourth reprint 2005 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar.

This book is a successor to my former work, Meditations on the Occult Life. Both were written in the meditative state, which can follow the practice of contemplation. This work aims to provide some understanding of the whole process of man’s evolution to a state of perfection. The reader glimpses the opportunities, difficulties, pitfalls and ups and downs of the entire journey fr0m Man t0 Superman.

From Chapter –  ‘The Laws of the Spiritual Life’:

” I AM Divine, Eternal and Immortal. I affirm and realise my divinity, my immortality and my eternity.

Divine is the SELF, I AM the Divine SELF, that SELF AM I.

Immortal is the SELF. I AM the Immortal SELF, that SELF AM I.

Eternal is the SELF. I AM the Eternal SELF, that SELF AM I.

The SELF is in ME is One with the SELF in ALL,

I AM that SELF, that SELF AM I. “

” Such phrases as these, mentally affirmed with increasing depth and fullness of realisation, serve to exalt the consciousness. Oft-repeated, continually affirmed with concentrated thought and will, they will most surely take man across the Bridge of the Immortals, which is no outer bridge, but shines within him or herself . . . “

The Pilgrim Self

By Robert Ellwood.

164 Pages | First Quest Edition 1996 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. – 0835607399

” Life is . . . a series of sunrises, with night following behind them – each night a little death, each sunrise a minor birth . . . linked together by a single secret, the secret of who you really are. “

So begins this deceptively simple, poetic jewel of a book by Robert Ellwood, author of the best-selling inspirational classic Finding the Mind. Drawing on the teachings of Theosophist Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891), Ellwood describes the individual self as a Pilgrim journeying from life to life, learning, growing, evolving toward that state of infinite purity from which we come and which is our true home.

A spiritual Passages for today’s seeker, Ellwood’s gentle travelogue for the soul points to the deeper meaning of the stages and sign-posts of human life – childhood, adolescence, midlife, aging – offering guidance for the Pilgrim who is each of us, as we walk life’s winding Path.

From Chapter 2 – ‘Chinks of Eternity’ (p. 29):

As the Secret Doctrine puts it:

” The universe is worked and guided, from within outwards. As above, so it is below, as in heaven, so on earth; and man, the microcosm and miniature copy of the macrocosm, is the living witness to this Universal Law and to the mode of its action.

And again:

From Gods to men, from Worlds to atoms, from a Star to a rush-light, from the Sun to the vital heat of the meanest organic being – the world of Form and Existence is an immense chain, the links of which all are connected. “

Finding Deep Joy

By Robert Ellwood.

143 Pages | Second Quest Edition, 2001 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. – ISBN 083560800x

The dances of the atoms and galaxies are dances of joy. Here below on earth, joy lies hidden deep down at the hearts of all things  – of boulders, trees, sharks, and ourselves . . .

And we can find this joy, promises eminent professor Robert Ellwood. The deep joy pervading the universe is within everyone’s reach – you don’t have to be a mystic or a saint. Joy is our birthright and our true nature. Humph, not mine! you say? Ellwood frankly acknowledges the reality of shifting moods and life’s tedium and despair. But he invokes Christian, Buddhist, Hindu and Sufi wisdom to affirm joy beyond all conditions – for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health. Then, he leads us to find deep joy for ourselves, one precious moment at a time.

From Chapter 10 – ‘For Richer for Poorer, in Sickness and in Health’ (p. 119):

” That’s joy, it is always

a recognition, the known

appearing fully itself, and

more itself than one knew . . .

Marvelous Truth confronts us

at every turn

in every guise.

Dwell

in our crowed hearts

our steaming bathrooms, kitchens full of

things to be done,

ordinary streets.

Thrust close your smile

that we know you, terrible joy. “

The Cross and the Grail – Esoteric Christianity for the 21st Century

By Robert Ellwood.

193 Pages | First Quest Edition, 1997 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. – 0835607607

Many Christians today yearn for a deeper, more inward practice of their faith. Drawing on the ancient wisdom tradition and the themes and symbols of medieval romance, Robert Ellwood shows Christianity at its most profound to be a philosophical, meditative, and mystical path.

The two symbols at heart of Christian belief – the Cross and Grail – represent the two faces of contemporary Christianity. The Cross is its outward face – masculine, public, exalted. The Grail is its hidden and esoteric face – magical, feminine, sought by many, found only by those who are able to ask the right questions. This book teaches you to ask the right questions. Its readings, stories, prayers, and practices can help you plumb into the hidden depths of a faith you may have taken for granted.

From the Preface (p. x & xi):

” The Grail of medieval and Arthurian and Christian romance, reminds us that the Path is also a great quest for the holy, for that which will transform us and the world. There are many versions of the Grail story. It is not my purpose here to sort them out, and in the end the Holy Grail means something unique to each sincere seeker of the hidden and eternal treasure it represents. However, in one way or another, the narratives generally tell of a knight, who journeys to a blighted land, perhaps ruled over by maimed king. Reaching the country’s center, the knight dares to enter a castle containing as its great treasure a chalice of imperishable brightness, which is guarded by knights and maidens bearing enigmatic tokens, such as a broken sword or a lance dripping blood. The puzzling question: ‘Whom does the Grail serve?’ must be asked by the knight in order to transform himself and restore the wasteland. In all versions there is a feeling of magical and dreamlike strangeness, suggesting, that the story is ultimately about initiation and a transformation taking place inwardly, at the deepest levels of consciousness from which come dream and inspiration. “

Paramitas of Perfection – Blavatsky Lecture 1987

By Muriel Daw.

37 Pages | Blavatsky Lecture 1987 | Soft cover | The Theosophical Publishing House, London.

” Yea Lord, I see the PATH, its foot in mire, its summits lost in glorious Nirvanic. And now I see the ever narrowing Portals on the hard and thorny way to Jñana “ – From: The Voice of Silence , ‘The Seven Portals’, p.  47.

” . . . O weaver of thy freedom, thou hast to master these Pāramitās of perfection – the virtues transcendental six and ten in number – along the weary path. ” – From: The Voice of Silence, ‘The Seven Portals’, p. 48.

The six and ten transcendental virtues “, (the Pāramitās), are not for ful-grown yogis and priests alone, but for all those who enter the PATH. ” – Written to H.P.B. by her Master, from: Collected Writings 12, p. 598.

Most of us, as students of Theosophy, are already familiair with the second quotation from The Voice of Silence. However, although we may have meditated for years on the first of the transcendental virtues so richly described in THE SEVEN PORTALS, for some of us there remains a burning question: ‘Ten Pāramitās are mentioned, what about the other four?

It may be thought perhaps these other four are unimportant, otherwise Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891) would have given us more information about them: but this is not true. In fact, Buddhists call them ‘The Four Great Perfections’. They are so important that they are never given to beginners, only to students well advanced along the Way. It should also be noted, that in the Buddhist Scriptures, the Path of the Ten Pāramitās is always linked with the Ten Bhūmis (Stations or Earths) experienced along the Way.

The Idyll of the White Lotus

By Mabel Collins (1851-1927), with an explanation by Swami T. Subba Row (1856 – 1890).

Dutch translation: De Idylle van de Witte Lotus | Ankh-Hermes | ISBN: 9789020255409.

This tale of a young seer in a decadent temple in Ancient Egypt is at once gripping and profound. It depicts the evolution of a Soul from weakness to strength, from ignorance to insight – a pure but unthinking child becomes a wise messenger.

From the Prologue:

” Behold, I stood alone, one among many, an isolated individual in the midst of a united crowd. And I was alone, because among the all the men my brethren, who knew, I alone was the man who both knew and taught. I taught the believers at the gate, and was driven to do this by the power dwelled in the sanctuary. I had no escape, for in that deep darkness of the most sacred shrine, I beheld the light of the inner life and was driven to reveal it, and by it was upheld and made strong. For indeed, although I died, it took ten priests of the temple to accomplish my death, and even then they but ignorantly thought themselves powerful. “

The Common Experience – Signposts on the Path to Enlightenment

By J.M. Cohen and J-F. Phipps.

281 Pages |First Quest Edition 1992 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835606791.

The mystical path is not mysterious. It is not the private path of monks and yogins‘, so begins this anthology of the spiritual experience of ordinary men and women as well as those of monks, philosophers, and spiritual teachers such as Lao Tzu, Krishnamurti, Aldous Huxley, William Blake, Plato and Paramahansa Yogananda. These selections on the ways to Enlightenment, drawn from both East and West, are grouped to illuminate such topics as meditation, compassion, time and eternity, mystical powers and death and rebirth. Although the writings and the authors’ commentary on them are variously colored by their separate traditions, their effect as a whole is to reveal ‘the white light, that combines the rainbow hues of the different mystical traditions‘, which are essentially one ‘common experience‘.

From Chapter 4 – ‘Enlightenment’ (p. 109):

” Q. How is it possible to become selfless, while leading a life of worldly activity?

A. There is no conflict between work and wisdom.

Q. Do you mean that one can continue all the old activities, in one’s profession, for instance, and at the same time get enlightenment?

A. Why not? But in that case one will not think that it is the old personality, which is doing the work, because one’s consciousness will gradually become transformed until it enters in That which is beyond the little self . . . “

The Occult Way (Part II)

By Captain P.G. Bowen (1882 – 1940).

36 Pages – NB: the book begins on page 188 with page 224 as its final page | 1985 edition | Softcover | The Theosophical Publishing House, London | No ISBN.

From the Foreword:

” Instead of Notes, which are a usual and indeed a necessary accompaniment to lessons, such as those given in Part I of this book, I give in the lessons that follow some questions asked by Learners, and my own answers thereto. The questions are not inventions of my own, but are selections from a volume of queries actually propounded by students, who have heard the subject matter of the various lessons expounded by me in lectures, or have had private correspondence with me concerning it.

The question I have chosen to answer here have been selected for two reasons: first, because a majority of students appear to be interested in the points, upon which they bear, and second, because the answers they evoke serve in some measure to fill up the wider gaps, which the lessons inevitably contain. To fill all gaps in teachings, such as I have given would naturally be impossible, and even if possible would not be desirable. To give just enough leading to induce in the Learner a desire to travel for himself/herself is always my aim, not give him/her so much as to cause him/her to feel that effort of his/her own is unnecessary.

Each question in each of the lessons, which follow is designated by a letter (Question A, Question B. etc.), and related to the passage or paragraph similarly marked in the lesson in Part I to which that in Part II corresponds. The Occult Way

By Captain P.G. Bowen (1882 – 1940).

176 Pages | Original edition 1936, revised edition 1978 | Softcover | The Theosophical Publishing House London | ISBN: 0722950713.

Among the strongest influences in the literary life of Ireland in the early Decades of this Century was the Hermetic Society founded by ‘AE’ for the study of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky’s (1831 – 1891) teachings. It was a meeting place for young writers, poets, and intellectuals, and in 1933 there arrived Captain P.G, Bowen, whose father had been among Madame Blavatsky’s circle of students in London. Recognizing in Bowen a kindred spirit, ‘AE’ put him in charge of the Hermetic Society and urged him to write an account of the path of self-development taught in the Schools of the Mystery tradition. The Occult Way is Bowen’s attempt to present this practical aspect of the Hermetic philosophy. Written in the austere spirit of Light on the Path, the seven Lessons seek to teach the aspirant to know himself and to depend on himself alone. A book for all serious students of practical occultism.

From page 76:

” Look, O my son, for the STAR! The STAR, O Child, who would be a Man or Woman, will gleam upon you as the Night wanes, and the Storms of the Dark Hours die away into a Peace that is Herald of the Dawn. That STAR does not rise nor does it set: IT holds a fixed place beyond the clouds in the depths of a speckless sky; but not until the Thunders are hushed and the Storm Fog shreds apart can its Golden Light descend to earth and dispel the gloom of your Night.

Know, O son, that this Nature in which you live and labour is, like the mid-air about high mountains, the Playground and the Battleground of the Gods of Storm. Not until you dominate those Angels of Strife, and marshal them in legions obedient to your word, will the Clouds of their Breath of Fury lift and the DAWN STAR illumine the Sleeping Earth. Then, and only then, while STAR FIRE flames upon the WAY, may you rest with PEACE, and raise the veil from her face.
