Living Ethically – Advice from Nagarjuna’s Precious Garland

Door Sangharakshita

202 Pagina’s | 2009 | Softcover | Uitgeverij Windhorse Publications | ISBN 9781899579860

Oospronkelijke titel: The Prophet

245 Pagina’s | Uitgegeven in 2017 | Softcover | Garant Uitgevers NV., Antwerpen – Apeldoorn | ISBN: 9789044135718.

Noemen we hier drie grote richtingen:

Hoe word je een Stoïcijn? Oude Filosofie voor het Moderne Leven

Door Massimo Pigliucci, vertaald door Ruud van der Plassche.

239 Pagina’s | Vierde druk 2017 | Softcover | Uitgeverij Ten Have, Utrecht | ISBN: 9789025905675

Engels origineel: How to be a Stoic; Using Ancient Philosophy to Live a Modern Life | Published in 2017 | Basic Books, New York.

Stoïcijnse Levenskunst – Evenveel Geluk als Wijsheid

Door Miriam van Reijen.

167 Pagina’s | Uitgegeven in 2016, vierde druk | Softcover | ISVW Uitgevers, Leusden | ISBN: 9789491693830.

Stoische Notities

Door Rymke Wiersma.

209 Pagina’s | Uitgegeven in 2011 | Softcover | Uitgeverij Atalanta, Utrecht | ISBN: 9789073034440.

To Be and How to Be

By Peggy Rubin.

287 Pages | First Quest Edition 2010 | Softcover | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN:  9780835608534.

‘ The play of life is a daring adventure. Live it for all it’s worth and say yes! No matter what . . .

So says author and popular Sacred Theatre workshop leader Peggy Rubin. Drawing on decades of experience, she helps us take the leading role in our own life by tapping into the nine powers of the theatre, including Story, Expression, Point of View, Conflict and Celebration. With imaginative exercises throughout, her long-awaited book is fun, profound, and exuberantly transformative!

From the ‘Prologue’ (p. 2):

” This book uses the traditional theatre as a metaphor for framing and living life. I think of it as a dialogue between us. We will be talking about how actors work as they prepare and play their roles and how their training can provide ways for us all to live more buoyantly. First, may I share some thoughts about how I believe the theatre began as a sacred act, how your life is a sacred art form, and why I call what we are doing together Sacred Theatre.

Let us return to the ancient firelight and our ancestor’s celebration over the roasting meat. We can imagine the excitement as the first actor rises to enact the story of the hunt; we can almost hear the accompanying sounds and feel his listener’s enormous gratitude for the animal that gave its life to provide protein and also gave them this reason to celebrate – and, incidentally, to invent the theatre. “

De Adelaar in Zijn Vlucht

Door Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895 – 1986), vertaald door Henri W. Methorst en A.J.G. Methorst-Kuiper.

221 Pagina’s | Eerste druk 1974, tweede druk 2015 | Synthese, een imprint van Milinda Uitgevers B.V. | ISBN: 9788187326366.

Engels origineel: The Flight of the Eagle | Published in 1972, 2005 edition | Krishnamurti Foundation, London, England | ISBN: 9781596750012.

Leven zonder Gisteren of Morgen

By Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895 – 1986), vertaald door Hans van der Kroft.

174 Pages | Eerste druk 2015 | Synthese, een imprint van Milinda Uitgevers B.V. | ISBN: 9789062711185.

Engels origineel: As One is: To Free the Mind of All Conditioning | 2007 edition | Krishnamurti Foundation Trust Ltd., Hampshire, England | ISBN: 9781890772628.

Wat Doe JIJ met je Leven?! – Jonge Mensen en Relaties, Opleiding, Toekomstig Werk en de Zin van Je Leven

Door Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895 – 1986), vertaald door Peter Roelofsen.

199 Pagina’s | Eerste druk 2003, tweede druk 2004 | Softcover | Ank-Hermes B.V., Deventer | ISBN: 9020283006.

Engels origineel: What Are You Doing With Your Life? | Published in 2005 | Krishnamurti Foundation of America | ISBN: 8187326352.

Krishnamurti over Krishnamurti – ‘Krishnamurti’s Notebook’

Door Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895 – 1986).

288 Pagina’s | Eerste druk 2004 | Synthese, een imprint van Milinda Uitgevers B.V. | ISBN: 9789062719792.

‘ Krishnamurti’s Notebook is a spiritual treasure. The words inside offer the intimate spirit of a truly remarkable presence, poetic, gracious, vast as the sky and wonderfully wise.’ – Jack Kornfield (auteur).

‘ This Notebook, with its matter-of-fact descriptions of Krishnamurti’s almost daily experiences of mystical states, was a privilege to read. In the past, I have found Krishnamurti’s ideas hard to grasp, no doubt because I was trying to grasp them. But this Notebook seems sometimes to paralyze my thought and allow Krishnamurti to work on me on a deeper level. ‘ – John Cleese (auteur).

auteur: Krishnamurti, J.
ISBN: 9789062719792
Additional DescriptionMore Details

Engels origineel: That Benediction is where You are – The last Bombay talks 1985 | Uitgegeven in 2001 | Krishnamurti Foundation Trust Ltd., Hampshire, England | ISBN: 978-8187326281.

Questions from the City, Answers from the Forest

By Ajahn Sumano Bhikku.

183 Pages | First Quest edition 1999 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835607747.

” Sincere inquiry always sparks our movement towards truth. Deep questions signal the manifestation of the very energy through which we outgrow ourselves. “

So writes Ajahn Sumano Bhikku, American-born Buddhist monk now living in a simple meditation cave in Thailand. Born in Chicago, a law school graduate and real estate professional, Sumano abandoned his comfortable American lifestyle for the shaved head, begging bowl, and rigorous meditation schedule of a forest monk. In 1994-1995, Sumano conducted a series of question and answer evenings at a guest house in Thailand’s Kowyai National Park with English-speaking tourists. The heartfelt questions of these city people and the clear answers Sumano gave from his forest perspective form the basis of this remarkable book. Written on a battered,  battery-powered laptop in his meditation cave, Sumano’s fascinating personal story and his refreshingly down-to-earth blend of American sensibility and Eastern practice will fascinate newcomers to Buddhist ideas as well as experienced practitioners.

Waarheid is een Land zonder Paden – Een Reis met Krishnamurti

Door Ingram Smith.

230 Pagina’s | 1991 Editie | Softcover |  Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 9789061750659.

Engels origineel: Truth is a Pathless Land – A Journey with Krishnamurti | Uitgegeven in 1989 | Theosophical Publishing House.

Creative Living

By Ramjivan Sinha.

39 Pages | First edition 1970, first reprint 1993 | Booklet | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592267.

We learn from the study of Theosophy, the Ancient Wisdom, that while man is alive, his inner principles, namely Spirit, Intuition, Intellect, lower Manas and Kama, all are mixed together; that at our best moments we get some rays of Light or inspiration from the higher principles and we produce a beautiful work of art. And that there are moments when we fall back from such heights and are prone to karmic influences, which lead to contradictions in life. Very often, therefore, we find instances of self-indulgence, moral laxity or looseness, physical imbalance, loneliness or depression in the lives of artists. We are trying to discover ways of total creative living, in which there is no such contradiction, in which the life-stream flows freely and smoothly, in all its loveliness and beauty all the time . . .

From page 39:

” It has been said (above), that the constant openness of one’s being is an essential pre-requisite for discovery. To this may be added an attitude of constant helpfulness. As the plants and trees are pouring themselves out all the time for the joy of all around, so also the individual must learn to give, to serve and to sacrifice with joy. ‘What is the best that I can give or contribute? What way can I serve best’? Such questions the individual should, off and on, put to him or herself, in quiet moments and in solitude. The deep within will probably give the answer, and if one is open and alert, one will listen and discover one’s true vocation. “

Mr. Narayan comes from a family of Theosophists, who always stressed right living. He believes, that if humanity cannot attain liberation or Nirvana without living in this world, this world would not have been created. His lectures and articles have won appreciation in many countries.

From Chapter 36 – ‘Living in Richness’ (p. 220):

” The sages have said, that one who has risen above personal desires becomes free from anxiety, fear, worry and is ever tranquil, calm and joyous. Such a one does not want anything from anybody, is ever helpful to all, living like a king who is responsible in richness. In the Yoga Vāsishtha, such a person is spoken of as one from whom good qualities emanate all around, as white swans fly all over from a pure lake; having seen whom, having heard about whom, having met with whom and having remembered whom, all creatures feel joy. It then adds: Him or Her from whose heart emanates purity all around, the Guardian Angels of the world protect and support . . . “

Dharma: De Wet van Ons Beste Wezen

18 Paginas’s | Brochure | Uitgegeven in 2008 | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland, Amsterdam | ISBN: 9789061750895.

Deze brochure onder de titel: Dharma: The Law of Our Best Being | Een artikel in The Theosophist, januari 2006 | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar.

The Search for Freedom

By Rohit Mehta (1908 – 1995)

196 Pages | First edition 1957, second edition 2000 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 817059345X.

This book consist of short essays dealing with various problems which mankind faces in daily life, within organizations, in society and politics in aspiration towards the spiritual life. The origin of those problems is identified in every case as lying not outside but within human beings themselves, in their unrealistic and self centred perception of people, things and events. Thus the solution of these problems also lies within each one of us.

From Chapter 16 – ‘The Path of Return’ (p. 112 & 113):

” The vices of the ordinary man pass through a subtle transformation and reappear with changed aspect in the heart of the disciple . . . The pure artist, who works for the love of his work is sometimes far more firmly planted on the right road than the Occultist, who fancies he has removed his interest from self, but who has in reality only enlarged the limits of experience and desire, and transferred his interest to things, which concern his larger span of life. “

Life: Your Great Adventure – A Theosophical View

By Eunice and Felix Layton.

178 Pages | First edition 1994 | Hardcover | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN 8170592402.

Formerly published as Theosophy: Key to Understanding (1967), this book is based on many talks the authors have presented in lectures and classes throughout the United States and in various other countries. They provide answers to basic human questions, such as:

  • Is there some meaning to existence?
  • Is there life after death?
  • Will we live again?
  • How can we find inner peace?

With their wide background of experience, Mrs. and Mr. Layton are able to bring a common sense approach to the metaphysical concepts of Theosophy and relate them to the problems of people in their daily lives.

From Chapter 15 – ‘Release Your Imprisoned Splendor’ (p. 170 & 171):

” How beautifully the book ends, having gone through all these other qualifications. For it concludes with this reminder: ‘Of all the qualifications, love is the most important, for if it is strong enough in a man, it forces him to acquire all the rest, and all the rest without it would never be sufficient . . . He who is on the Path exists not for himself or herself, but for others; he/she has forgotten him/herself, in order that he may serve them.

This the test of where every individual, including each of us, stands in the evolutionary process. To the degree that we forget ourselves in the service of others, to that same degree have we begun to release this imprisoned splendor. “

The Fundamentalist Mind – How Polarized Thinking Imperils Us All

By Stephen Larsen, Foreword by Phil Cousineau.

248 Pages | Copyright 2007 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 9780835608503.

The revered images and sacred narratives of the world’s religions render existence meaningful. However, when interpreted literally rather than symbolically, the spiritual essence of religion loses its creative potential and can become a destructive force. Fundamentalists of any faith, says author Stephen Larsen, are in a rapture of certainty, secure in their righteous belief and an exclusive convenant with God. Our world today is embroiled in a ‘clash of fundamentalisms’ as predicted by the great mythologist Joseph Campbell, and, in the words of Dr. Huston Smith, ‘all -isms end up in schisms.’

Such thinking exists not only in religion and the ‘other’ but in all of us – cultural creatives, left-wingers, scientists, and secularists alike. We all have an inner fundamentalist: It can originate right there in the amygdala, a tiny, almond-sized organ in the midbrain, that triggers the fight-or-flight response to danger. It also originates in the tendency to split thinking and feeling that exists throughout the brain. Larsen shows us how to free our minds by identifying polarized thinking in ourselves as well as others. He suggests a ‘natural spirituality’: the awareness of the God force in everything, the humility to admit mistakes, flexibility instead of rigidity, and a willingness to tolerate differences.

From Chapter Nine – ‘Natural Religion’ (p. 211 & 212):

INCANTATIONS TO THE HIDDEN GOD

” How you drove a chariot in battle
How you walked as a pilgrim,
one-eyed and with a broad flopped hat,
How one day you went naked
black and female and wore
a terrible necklace of skulls
to wake us up.
How you danced wearing
a bear mask.
How you went down into the
Underworld, to sit as a Judge of men.
How, hawk-winged,
you carried the sun to its zenith.
How as a beautiful youth you died again an again,
how many times have we wept for you,
sung holy dirges, and made sweet things
for your birth.
We were the voice from the whirlwind,
You were the golden calf,
and He who threw down the calf.
You were Mother of us all,
and how many times you wept
for all your children.
The fire from your terrible waking eye
ignited the God of Love
to holy ash.
When you dance your Rapture
the universe becomes a burning ground.
Let those who feel that day is upon us
Learn to find patience and compassion for
All that live in our fragile, beautiful world.
Let us use your terrible sword to slay our egos,
not our brothers. “

Why are You being Educated? – Talks at Indian Universities

By Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895–1986).

132 Pages | First edition 2002, reprinted in 2004 | Softcover | Krishnamurti Foundation, India | ISBN: 8187326395.

This book consists of six talks, that Krishnamurti gave at Indian Universities of Technology between 1969 – 1984.

Krishnamurti’s chief concern here is to awaken students to the fact that the pursuit of knowledge does not liberate man from his ignorance of himself. While knowledge is indispensable, it also creates the illusion that we have the intelligence to meet the challenges of life. This makes us neglect the vast and subtle field of the human psyche. This perspective comes through clearly in these talks, which therefore have significance not just for the young, but also for parents, teachers, and all those interested in the deeper issues of life.

From page 39:

” So if we come back to the fundamental question: what is ignorance? Ignorance, is this unawareness of the whole structure of and nature of the mind, the brain and of all its movement; that is the very essence of ignorance. You learn from books and from your professors, pass examinations, get a few degrees and get a job – that is nothing. That is necessary in this mad world, but to be totally unaware of the extraordinary movement, the beauty, the subtlety, the quickness of all that inward movement, to be unconscious, to be unaware of it is not only ignorance; it brings its own destruction. “

What Are You Doing With Your Life?

Door Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895 – 1986).

272 Pages | Published in 2001, Books on Living for Teens – Volume I. The 2005 edition is available here | Softcover | Krishnamurti Publications of America, Ojai California | ISBN: 188800424X.

Dutch translation: Wat Doe JIJ Met Je Leven?! – Jonge Mensen en Relaties, Opleiding, Toekomstig Werk en de Zin van Je Leven | Eerste druk 2003, tweede druk 2004 | Softcover | Ank-Hermes B.V., Deventer | ISBN: 9020283006

Teens learn for themselves about their relationship to the self, to each other, family, work, society, the world, and the meaning and purpose of life. Through paying attention rather than accepting the authority of their conditioning, they can find out for themselves about love, sex, marriage, the meaning of work, money, ambition and competition and, by changing the violence in themselves, they can change the world.

See for yourself that:

  • Each fear, anger, escape into drugs multiplied by six billion creates the world.
  • If we end our own mental pain, we can affect the pain of the world.
  • We are taught skills to make a living, not in living itself.
  • The purpose of life and its joys is discovered by paying attention to what you think, do and feel in daily life.

Krishnamurti spoke to young people all over the world and founded schools in California, England and India. ‘When one is young‘, he said, ‘one must be revolutionary, not merely in revolt . . . to be psychologically revolutionary means non-acceptance of any pattern’.

From Chapter 3 – ‘Thought, the Thinker and the Prison of the Self’ (p. 33):

Thought Can Never Be Free

” So we must understand very clearly that our thinking is the response of memory, and memory is mechanistic. Knowledge is ever incomplete, and all thinking born of knowledge is limited, partial, never free. So there is no freedom of thought. But we can begin to discover a freedom, which is not a process of thought, and in which the mind is simply aware of all its conflicts and of all the influences impinging on it. “

What Are You Doing With Your Life?

What Are You Doing With Your Life? Brings together excerpts from Krishnamurti’s books, and represents the first anthology of its kind, that offers the young a systematic approach to his vision of education and life. Krishnamurti, whose life and teachings have spanned the greater part of the 20th century, is regarded by many as one who has had the most profound impact on human consciousness in modern times.

From Chapter I – ‘What Are You’:

” What is the relationship between you and the misery, confusion within and around you? Undoubtly, this confusion and misery did not appear by themselves. You and I gave birth to them, not a capitalist, communist or fascist society, but you and I have created them in relation to each other. What you are from the inside, is from the outside projected on the world.  What you are, what you think and what you feel, what you do in daily life, is projected outwardly shaping this world. […] What you are is the world, and so your problem is the problem of the world. This certainly is a simple and fundamental fact, right? Seemingly, we forget this all the time in relation to a single or many human beings. We would like to make a change by means of a system or revolution of ideas based on a system, yet forget; you and I create society and cause chaos or establish order by the way in which we live our lives. “

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Sage, philosopher and thinker, he illumined the lives of millions the world over – intellectuals and laymen, young and old. Breaking away from all organized religions and denying his role as a Guru, he spelt out his mission: to set man absolutely and unconditionally free. He travelled round the world till the age of 90 giving talks, writing, holding discussions. He talked of the things that concern all of us in our everyday life; the problems of living in modern society, the individual’s search for security, and the need for human beings to free themselves from from their inner burdens of violence, fear and sorrow. Born on 11th May 1895 as the eighth child of a pious couple in the small town of Madanapalle in Andhra Pradesh, Krishnamurti was adopted at the age of 14 by Annie Besant, the President of the Theosophical Society, and was brought up and groomed to be the World Teacher. In 1929, however, he renounced that role and dissolved The Order of the Star – a large world-wide organization that had been built up around him to fulfill that mission. This action was the culmination of the deep spiritual awakening undergone by him and his insight that religious organizations cannot lead human beings to truth.

Right Living in Modern Society

By Prof. P. Krishna.

126 Pages | Uitgegeven in 1995 | Softcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland, Amsterdam | ISBN: 9061750717.

This book is a verbatim account of eight lectures delivered by prof. P. Krishna in 1992 and 1993 on the subject of right living in modern society. Primarily based on the teachings of Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895 – 1986), these lectures focus on the following issues: what is it that divides us?, our relationship to the world, our relationship to ourselves, our responsibility towards children and ways of creating the right learning environment.

If you ask me to list the major problems that modern society, or mankind, in its present state is facing, I would say that the tendency in human beings to form groups – either national groups or religious groups or caste groups or racial groups – and create division of mankind, then feel not for the whole of mankind, but only for the particular group to which one belongs, is by far the greatest problem facing us, because it does give us some sort of a feelings of security to belong to a group. We must examine whether it is real security or some kind of illusory feeling of security, which comes because we are not farsighted enough, we are not looking deeply enough. I would say this division in mankind is perhaps the most major problem and the greatest cause of violence and suffering in modern society.

From Chapter 8 – ‘Right Living in Modern Society: Creating the Right Learning Environment’ (p. 126):

” In the field of academics the teachers may know more than the students and they can transfer their knowledge. But in this field, as human beings struggling to discover the Art of Living rightly, we, grown-ups, are not different from the children. Knowledge does not help us to live rightly. Therefore we must inquire together and learn together, as friends, not as instructors and trainees. Only a school that cares both for the academic development and for the Art of Right Living, can impart right education to children and fulfil our responsibility towards the next generation. “

To me, the true value of any book lies only in the questions that it raises, not in the answers that it offers. If the reader finds in this book even  few questions he wishes to dwell on, I shall feel amply rewarded. That is the only purpose of this book. (from the foreword)
A quote from the book:

A Wholly Different Way of Living – Krishnamurti in Dialogue with Prof. Anderson

Door Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895 – 1986).

269 Pages | Published in 1991 | Softcover | Krishnamurti Foundation India, Chennai | ISBN: 818732614X.

At a time of unprecedented outer change in the political and social spheres, is there a fundamental inner change that is demanded of each one of us? In the eighteen dialogues with Professor Allan W. Anderson, Emeritus Professor of Religious Studies at San Diego State University, J. Krishnamurti indicates that pinning our hopes on organized religion, science, political idealogy or the market economy not only fails to address basic human problems but actually creates them.

The way out of our difficulties, Krishnamurti states, can only start in the mind of each one of us, in an awareness of the way we actually perceive life, ourselves and others. Professor Anderson, throughout these dialogues, refers to many passages of Western and Eastern religious scriptures that he believes have been misunderstood and which in fact support Krishnamurti’s statements. The dialogues reproduced in an edited and slightly abridged version in this book, took place at San Diego State University from 18 to 28 February 1974.

From Dialogue XIV – ‘Death, Life and Love are Indivisible – The Nature of Immortality’ (p. 193):

Krishnamurti:

” That’s the most absurd thing. Now what we are discussing, sir, is the understanding of death, its relation to living and this thing called love. One cannot possibly understand the immensity – and it is immense – of this thing called death unless there is real freedom from fear. That’s why we talked sometime ago about the problem of fear. Unless the mind really frees itself from fear there is no possibility of understanding the extraordinary beauty, strength, and vitality of death. “

Uncovering the Wisdom of the Heartmind

By Lin Jensen.

201 Pages | First Quest Edition 1999 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835607755.

‘Shaking Down Seed and Other Stories of Ordinary Goodness’.

Every ordinary act of kindness is an expression of the intuitive goodness at the heart of every human being. Zen Buddhists call this inborn compassion the ‘Heartmind’. This is exquisitely moving collection of tales helps readers uncover the simple Wisdom of benevolence and sympathy within everyday acts. Each story goes straight to the heart, reminding us what we aspire to be and giving us the confidence that getting there is within reach.

From Chapter – ‘Bad Dog – The Journey through Shame to Compassion’ (p. 41):

” Within all light is darkness:

But explained it cannot be by darkness

that, one-sided, is alone.

In darkness there is light:

But, here again, by light one-sided

it is not explained.

Light goes with darkness:

As the sequence does of steps in walking.

  • Sekito Kisen, in: Sandokai.

Shame is born in betrayal. It matters little whether one is victim or perpetrator, for shame adheres in the event itself. and all who participate, and all who participate are tainted by its presence. “

Lin Jensen’s essays read like Zen-precise poetry inviting us (indeed, compelling us) to “have eyes that risk the present moment.” He demonstrates that seeing the world as it is actually means being fully alive. It is not hyperbole to call these teachings transformative. —Sylvia Boorstein, author of Funny, You Don’t Look Buddhist “A feast for the heart. The Harvest of Life (The Blavatsky Lecture 2002)

By Alan Hughes.

37 Pages | The Blavatsky Lecture delivered at the Summer School of The Theosophical Society in England, The University of Nottingham Sunday 4th of August 2002 | Lecture | The Theosophical Society in England | No ISBN.

How would you have answered Sinnett’s question? Is it so different from the child’s question: ‘What are people for, Dad’? It’s the question of questions: Without a satisfactory answer, our lives will lack direction and purpose. What a massive industry the prolonging of life is today. ‘Vanity, vanity’, says The Preacher of Ecclesiastes, unless – to paraphrase him – one’s labour under the sun produces a harvest. And Thomas a Kempis uses the same word: ‘It is vanity‘, he says, ‘to desire a long life and to take no heed of a good life’.

‘The Good Life’ is a common phrase today but what does it mean? I sit on Goring beach and wonder how Thomas a Kempis would have defined it. I watch and feel the fire of the sun setting; the air moves around me and the sea heaves and crashes its arriving waves onto the stones, which grumble at being disturbed. What are the hidden four elements, and – more importantly – is the outcome of all this process beneficial in any way; which brings us back to Sinnett’s question to the Master. ‘What is the nature of a good harvest and what is it not’?

From Chapter II (p. 8):

” You are part of the One Existence, which men call God. You are divine in your origin and divine in your innermost nature. Your body is mortal; your spirit, which is your true Self, is immortal; your Soul, which is the Self, which thinks and feels and regards itself as ‘I’, may win its immortality if it becomes the servant of Spirit, and not otherwise. “

The Pilgrim Self

By Robert Ellwood.

164 Pages | First Quest Edition 1996 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835607399.

” Life is . . . a series of sunrises, with night following behind them – each night a little death, each sunrise a minor birth . . . linked together by a single secret, the secret of who you really are. “

So begins this deceptively simple, poetic jewel of a book by Robert Ellwood, author of the best-selling inspirational classic Finding the Mind. Drawing on the teachings of Theosophist Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891), Ellwood describes the individual self as a Pilgrim journeying from life to life, learning, growing, evolving toward that state of infinite purity from which we come and which is our true home.

A spiritual Passages for today’s seeker, Ellwood’s gentle travelogue for the soul points to the deeper meaning of the stages and sign-posts of human life – childhood, adolescence, midlife, aging – offering guidance for the Pilgrim who is each of us, as we walk life’s winding Path.

From Chapter 2 – ‘Chinks of Eternity’ (p. 29):

As the Secret Doctrine puts it:

” The universe is worked and guided, from within outwards. As above, so it is below, as in heaven, so on earth; and man, the microcosm and miniature copy of the macrocosm, is the living witness to this Universal Law and to the mode of its action.

And again:

From Gods to men, from Worlds to atoms, from a Star to a rush-light, from the Sun to the vital heat of the meanest organic being – the world of Form and Existence is an immense chain, the links of which all are connected. “

The Secret of the Golden Flower – A Chinese Book of Life

Translated and explained by Richard Wilhelm (1873 – 1930), with a commentary by Carl Gustav Jung (1875 – 1961)

149 Pages | First published in 1931; new, revised & augmented edition, 1962 | Softcover | Harcourt Brace & Company, USA | ISBN 9780156799805

The Secret of the Golden Flower, the Treatise that forms the central part of this book, was discovered by Professor Wilhelm, who recognized it as essentially a practical guide to the integration of the personality. His German translation, published in the autumn of 1929 shortly before his death, was immediately hailed by Jung as a link between the insights of the East and his own psychological research, a relationship explored by the great analytical psychologist in a brilliant and significant commentary.

This edition also contains part of another Chinese meditation text, the Hui Ming Ching or The Book of Consciousness and Life, and is illustrated with numerous plates and drawings.

A quotation about ‘detachment’ (p. 122):

A halo of light surrounds the world of the law.
We forget one another, quiet and pure, altogether powerful and empty.
The emptiness is irradiated by the light of the heart of heaven.
The water of the sea is smooth and mirrors the moon its surface.
The clouds disappear in blue space; the mountains shine clear.
Consciousness reverts to contemplation; the moondisk rests alone.

This is a ‘HOW TO’ book, that aims to help you in your daily life quest. It is definitely not a book to be casually studied and forgotten. It is a book to be used; to be referred to each and every day. It contains a formula for mastering ALL problems of living – every daily experience – a formula, that you will want to recall time after time after time :)

With frankness and vision, Chaudhuri discusses basic and specific concerns, such as:

  • failure at school,
  • disappointment in love
  • emotional fluctuations
  • the pressure of perfectionism
  • the dizziness success
  • the depression of middle age.

From Chapter ‘How to live a balanced Life’? (p. 211):

” The Art of integrated living consists in the spirit of intelligent cooperation between nature and spirit. Nature is blind without spirit; spirit is lame without nature. According to a story in the Sānkhya philosophy of India, one time a blind man and a lame man got lost in a forest. Each by himself was in helpless quandery. When they met each other, hope appeared. The lame man jumped upon the shoulders of the blind man. Together, both could easily manage to get out of the forest and reach their destination. Similarly, nature and spirit – by virtue of their purposive togetherness – can together make life gloriously meaningful. “
