Deze schijnbare werkelijkheid is echter veranderlijk en voorbijgaand, en bedekt zijn bestaansgrond die onveranderlijk en eeuwig is: puur bewustzijn, of zoals in de Vedische traditie wordt genoemd, Brahman. Het zich bevrijden van deze illusoire bedekkingen leidt tot de uiteindelijke bestemming van de mens die onbeschrijflijk is.

Atlantis: The Antediluvian World is a book published in 1882 by Minnesota populist potlitician Ignatius L. Connelly, who was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1831. Donnelly considered Plato’s account of Atlantis as largely factual and attempted to establish that all known ancient civilizations were descended from this lost land. many of its theories are the source of many modern0day concepts about Atlantis, including these: the civilization and technology beyond its time, the origins of all present races and civilizations, and a civil war between good and evil. Much of Donnelly’s scholarship, especially with regard to Atlantis as an explanation for similarities between ancient civilizations of the Old and New Worlds, was inspired by the publications of Charles Étienne Brasseur de Bourbourg and the fieldwork of Augustus Le Plongeon in the Yucatan.

Terwijl de Kruistochten een aanvang namen, reisde een handvol westerse geleerden naar het Oosten om kennis te maken met hun Arabische collega’s en hun werk, dat slechts mondjesmaat in het Westen was doorgedrongen. Zo keerde de nieuwsgierige monnik Adelard van Bath van Klein-Azië naar Engeland terug met manuscripten van Euclides over astronomie en wiskunde die het aanzien van de Europese wetenschappen ingrijpend zouden veranderen. Honderd jaar later, in 1209, reisde Michael Scotus naar Palermo waar hij Arabisch leerde en de christelijke wereld versteld zou doen staan met vertalingen van Plato, Averroes en Avicenna. De vernieuwende ideeën van deze en andere geleerden lagen aan de basis van onze Renaissance.

Een nabij-de-dood-ervaring (NDE) is een overweldigende confrontatie met de onbegrensde dimensies van ons bewustzijn. Met deze woorden beschrijft publicist en onderzoeker Pim van Lommel de bijzondere bewustzijnservaringen die volgens de huidige materalistische wetenschap niet mogelijk zijn. Tussen de meer wetenschappelijke bijdragen treft u ook tal van ervaringsverhalen van mensen die een NDE hebben gehad. Zij zijn de mensen die na een levensbedreigende crisis een buitengewone ervaring in hun bewustzijn hebben gemeld. In alle bijdragen worden de effecten beschreven die de NDE heeft op mensenlevens. Wat vijvenveertig jaar internationaal onderzoek heeft opgeleverd, is het inzicht dat deze ervaring het leven van mensen fundamenteel verandert.

Maar dat niet alleen. Hoe heeft de NDE überhaupt onze kijk op de wereld beïnvloed? Dertig jaar geleden stootke de belevingswereld van de NDE-er niet met de algemeen geldende opvattingen over leven en dood en met de gevestigde wetenschappelijke en religieuze (kerkelijke) paradigma’s.
