The Apocalypse Unsealed – Being an Esoteric Interpretation of the Initiation of Iôannês, Commonly Called the Revelation of St. John

Door James M. Pryse

126 Pagina’s | 2023, first published 1910 | Softcover | Uitgeverij Pantianos Classics | ISBN 9781789871845

James M. Pryse investigates early Christianity, explaining and demystifying the Apocalypse — also called the Book of Revelation. His examination reveals what is foreseen in the ancient Biblical text.

The events of the Book of Revelation are considered by Biblical scholars and believers to hold great significance, both in the historic sense and as prophecy of the church and its future. In Pryse’s interpretation, the Revelation is not an unsolvable enigma, or a mystery shrouded in secrets, but a living and cogent set of predictions. The original Greek of the book, which Pryse translated to aid his investigation, is proposed to be the key to understanding its meanings.

In making his case for the Apocalypse being a reflection of Greek wisdom, Pryse draws upon the philosophy of Plato and the terms of ancient Greek that describe parts of the body. Though learning these principles, an understanding of what the Apocalypse means is possible. In addition we receive instruction on Greek number theory, which Pryse uses to further unravel the New Testament text. Several charts and illustrations accompany his explanations, that the reader may arrive at the fullest understanding.

A novel and original approach to one of the Bible’s most famous texts, The Apocalypse Unsealed is a valuable piece of occult lore.

Oospronkelijke titel: Beyond Religion, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2011

Oospronkelijke titel: The unity of religious ideals | Uitgegeven in 1929 | The Sufi Movement, London

Seven Great Religions

By Annie Besant (1847 – 1933).

319 Pages | Third edition, 2nd reprint, 2013 | Paperback | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 9788170595083.

The religious life is a life of love and understanding, serving to unite all people and all beings in one Whole. In this brilliant series of lectures, Annie Besant, former President of The Theosophical Society (1907 – 1933), delves into the world’s Seven Great Religions and their intended role of uniting and elevating the world.

Small in compass, but peerless in depth and wisdom, this collection provides essential knowledge about Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Jainism, and Sikhism, culminating in the fountainhead of all religions, the Divine Wisdom of Theosophy. In this book, students of Religion, as well as practitioners will find a source of inspiration and knowledge, urging all towards purity of life, universal love and aspiration to Truth.

From page 314:

” In the coming civilization men shall love each other, and worship under many forms the One, the Indivisible. For the truth is that the Divine Wisdom is like the sun in heaven that shines upon every part of the earth. It shines down into every man’s compound, no matter how high the walls that he may build around it, for the sun is higher than all. So does the Divine Wisdom shine down into every religion; and though a man build barriers, the sun of the Divine Wisdom is higher than them all and it shines on every man’s face and illuminates it. There are many faiths, because mankind needs manas, the mind, in order to grow and develop. Take a ray of the sunlight and pass it through a prism; on the other side, seven colours will be painted. Take the spiritual truth and pass it through the prism of the human intellect, and the one white Truth shines out in seven different colours. “

The Essential Unity of All Religions

Compiled by Bhagavan Das (1869 – 1958).

683 Pages | Soft cover | First edition 1932, 2nd edition 1939 | Quest Books, U.S.A | ISBN: 9780835600071.

Eleven religions are usually regarded as living and current at present. These, proceeding from East to West, are: 1. Shintoism born in Japan, 2. Taoism (or Laotsism), and 3. Confucianism, in China; Vedism (or Vaidika Dharma, or Sanatana Dharma or Manava Dharma, now commonly called Hinduism), 5. Buddhism, 6. Jainism and 7. Sikhism, in India; 8. Zoroastrianism (or Parsism) in Iran (or Persia); 9. Judaism (or Hebraism, or Israelitism, or the Jewish religion), and 10. Christianity, in Palestine; 11. Islam (or Mohammedanism), in Arabia. Parallel passages have been gathered in this work from the universally recognised Scriptures, and also from some other generally and highly honored writings, of these eleven.

From ‘A Letter to the Reader´ as Preface to the Second Edition (p. xxv):

” Dear Reader, I pray you, unless you have found, and made sure of, a better way, to read about an Ancient Way, leisurely, in this book. Endeavour is made here, albeit very imperfectly, to expound, no new way, but the Way of the Ancients, a Way which is time-tested also to some extent. If you feel satisfied that that Way is worth experimenting with, then I pray you to do all you can to spread, as widely as may be possible for you, this Essential Message of all the Scriptures, as preparation for the Readjustment and Synthesis. “

Your respectful and sincere Well-wisher,

BHAGAVAN DAS.

Is Theosophy a Religion?

By Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891).

48 Pages | First edition, fourth reprint 2004 | Softcover | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170590310.

‘Theosophy is not a Religion‘ says Madame Blavatsky; it is Religion itself, the Wisdom Religion from which individual religions have sprung. It is the one bond of unitym whicb is so universal and all-embracing, that no man as no speck – from the gods and mortals down to animals, the blade of grass and atom – can be outside of its light. Therefore, any organization or body of that name must be necessarily be a Universal Brotherhood.

Theosophy can be practised by Christian or heathen, Jew or Gentile, by agnostic or materialist and atheist, provided that no one of these is a bigoted fanaticm who refuses to recognize as his brother or sister a person outside his own special creed or belief. Theosophy embraces every science in life, moral and physical, because it shows the connection of man and all things in the universe with each other.

From the Introduction:

” Religion is the best armour that man can have, but it is the worst cloak.  – Bunyan.

It is no exaggeration to say that there never was – during the present nineteenth century, at any rate – a movement, social or religious, so terribly misunderstood, or more blundered about than Theosophy – whether regarded theoretically as a code of ethics, or practically, in its objective expression, i.e.. the Society known by that name. “

HPB Teaches – An Anthology

By Michael Gomes.

579 Pages | First edition, first reprint 2006 | Hardcover | The Theosophical Society, Adyar | ISBN: 8170593972.

With a title like H.P.B. Teaches, the reader may wonder: ‘teaches what‘? HPB herself gives the answer: ‘metaphysics, psychology, philosophy, ancient religions, zoology, natural sciences’. One might add occult symbolism, spiritual evolution, guidance on moral and social issues, after death states, cycles and human destiny. Aside from the major books she is famous for – Isis Unveiled (1877), The Secret Doctrine (1888), The Key to Theosophy and The Voice of Silence (1889) – it is estimated that in a brief span of seventeen years, from 1874 to 1891, Mme. Blavatsky wrote close to one thousand articles, essays, and letters to journals, which in many cases focus within the space of a few pages on the topics listed above.

For the first time in one volume a representative selection of articles by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891), co-founder of the Theosophical Society, is available. The forty articles in this book cover every facet of HPB’s writings in English, including one of her semi-fictional stories.

From page 21:

” Many thousand years ago the wise King Solomon declared that ‘There is nothing new under the Sun’, and the words of this very wise man ought to be repeated till the farthest ends of time. There is not a science, nor a modern discovery in any secretion of it, but was known to the Cabalists thousands of years since. This will appear a bold and ridiculous assertion, I know: and one apparently unconfirmed by any authority. But I will answer that where truth stares one in the face, there can be no other authority than one’s senses. “

Finding Faith in the Face of Doubt – A Guide for Contemporary Seekers

By Joseph S. Willis.

135 Pages | First Quest Edition 2001 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835608050.

We know we don’t know‘ Willis sympathizes with the Greek philosopher Socrates, yet he adds: ‘we all (even atheists) must stand on assumptions that help us lead good lives‘. To explore these assumptions, he discusses different ways of thinking about God, involves both scientific and mythical views, deals with sources of good and evil, and argues for the need for freedom together with commitment. He assures us we can all think reasonably about Ultimate Reality and find a faith that fits and offers a reader-friendly guide helping questioners to maintain their integrity, whilst relating to the Ultimate Mystery beyond all understanding.

From the Introduction (p. 1):

” Everyone needs a faith, a commitment, that is congruent with her or his reason and knowledge, and it must be personal. There is no single way; ultimate truth is simply beyond human reach. But for yourself, for the sake of your own integrity, as a place upon which to stand as you make your life’s decisions, you must find a faith that makes real sense to you. It’s your life, your heart, and your mind.

This book is for people, who doubt the traditional answers, but who believe that the sheer accumulation of material things is not a satisfying way to live. It’s about faith and reason and truth from science, philosophy, and the religions of humankind. “

auteur: Willis, J.S.

The book grew from theology classes Willis taught in Unitarian churches and universities and from conversations with discontented members of other discussion groups. His clear and engaging prose is full of lively exchanges with his students. Frequent references to the best contemporary theologians (Bishop Spong, for example) and to philosophers, physicists, mythologists, and Bible experts provide an inspiring resource for those who long to resolve the conflict between faith and reason, doubt and belief. Joseph Willis, M.Div., former Presbyterian and Unitarian pastor, founded the Interreligious Council at the University of New Mexico. Now retired, he still counsels at Unitarian and Methodist churches. He is Minister Emeritus at Jefferson Unitarian Church in Golden, CO, and teaches adult classes at Jefferson and in a local Methodist congregation.

Zeven Sferen – Theosofie als Leidraad voor Psychologie en Levensbeschouwing

Door Frank Visser.

253 Pagina’s | Eerste druk 1995, tweede druk 1998 | Softcover, index & literatuurlijst | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland, Amsterdam | ISBN: 9061750709.

Annie Besant on the Brotherhood of Religions

By Annie Besant (1847 – 1933), compiled by Surendra Narayan.

79 Pages | First edition 1993 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592178.

Annie Besant (1847-1933) led the fight for the rights of women and laborers in her native England; later she worked with Mahatma Gandhi and spearheaded India’s struggle for freedom. Theosophist Joy Mills describes her as ‘a feminist before the movement for women’s rights was fully launched; she stood for freedom when half the world was held in the bonds of colonialism.’ A student of India’s spiritual traditions, Annie Besant was famed as an orator, author, and international President of the Theosophical Society.

From Chapter 5 – ‘One World Religion’ (p. 76):

” When religious hatreds have passed, when religious controversies have disappeared, when men have learned supreme truth so often preached, so little practised: ‘Let him that loveth God love his brother also’: when out of the World Religion has grown the World Peace; when out of the World Faith has grown the World Service; then religion shall shall be what it ought to be, the helper of the downtrodden, the protector of the weak, the teacher of the ignorant, the raiser of the fallen; then religion will not only tie men to God but man to man, and it will be realized that knowledge of God is best expressed in service to Man. “

The Wholeness Principle – Dynamics of Unity within Science, Religion and Society

By Anna Lemkow.

322 Pages | Published in 1990, second Quest edition 1995 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835607151.

Dutch translation: Het Heelheid Principe – De Dynamiek van Heelheid in Wetenschap, Religie en Samenleving | Published in 1993 | Softcover, incl. index, word list & literature list | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland, Amsterdam | ISBN: 9061750660.

It becomes more and more clear, the present-day tendency of separation amongst civilizations and religions is forming a threat for the global survival of humanity. A philosophy, in which an emphasis is put on that ‘unity’ present behind separation is called ‘holism’. Holistic literature is characterized by the postulization of possible connections between religion (mysticism) and science (physics), yet inclusion of its societal dimension often seems to be forgotten. It is The Wholeness Principle, which discusses this societal dimension to an elaborative extent.

Annas Lemkow researches an enormous scala of subjects. First, she discusses the rise of modern science and its effects on our worldview. Then, she involves the spiritual dimension by mapping out similarities and differences existing amongst the major religions of our world, the relationship between religion and science and the place mysticism has in view of the whole of human knowledge. Finally, she carefully looks at societal developments that have taken flight as a result of the rapid implementation of technology, such as industrialism and automation. She sketches the peripheries of a political vision adjusted to the new world order: one in which humankind does finally acknowledge East and West, North and South cannot live without each other.

From Chapter 12 – ‘The Essential Unity of all Religions’:

” Whether we listen with aloof amusement to the dreamlike mumbo jumbo of some red-eyed witch doctor of the Congo, or read with cultivated rapture thin translations  from the sonnets of the mystic Lao-tse, or now and again crack the hard nutshell of an argument of Aquinas, or catch suddenly the shining meaning of a bizarre Eskimo fairy tale, it will be always the one, shapeshifting yet marvelously constant story that we find, together with a challenging persistent suggestion of more remaining to be experienced than will ever be known or told. “

Het Heelheid Principe – De Dynamiek van Heelheid in Wetenschap, Religie en Samenleving

Door Anna Lemkow.

416 Pagina’s | Uitgegeven in 1993 | Softcover, incl. index, woordenlijst & literatuurlijst | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland, Amsterdam | ISBN: 9061750660.

Engels origineel: The Wholeness Principle – Dynamics of Unity within Science, Religion and Society | Uitgegeven in 1990 | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835607151.

Serge Kahili King holds a doctorate in psychology from California Western University. He has studied with Master shamans from Africa from Hawaii and has trained thousands in his popular seminars. He is author of Mastering Your Hidden Self, Imagineering for Health, Kahuna Healing, Urban Shaman, and the audio cassette, The Road to Self-Mastery.

From the Preface:

” We are of the earth, earthy. We certainly have amind and/or spirit which can transcend this planet both physically and metaphysically, but in addition we have animal bodies with animal natures which respond to and interact with the natural forces such as electricity, magnetism, and gravity. Modern science recognizes two others you may be less familiar with, which are called the strong and weak nuclear forces. Shamans, mystics, metaphysicians and more liberal scientists recognize additional forces that can be termed ‘psychoenergetic’, a Russian term meaning that they intera. They interact with the mind as well with the body. These are the ones discussed in the book, because they are so little known, so influential in our lives and so very useful. “

Vormen van Religieuze Ervaring – Een Onderzoek naar de Menselijke Aard

Door William James (1842 – 1910) vertaald door Daniël Mok en Johan van Tricht.

404 Bladzijden | Eerste Engelse druk 1902, eerste Nederlandse druk 1907, zesde herziene en vermeerderde druk 2010 | Softcover | Uitgeverij Abraxas, Amsterdam. ISBN 9789080730021

Engels origineel: The Varieties of Religious Experience A Study in Human Nature | Eerste druk 1902 | Harvard University.

The Varieties of Religious Experience – A Study in Human Nature

By William James (1842 – 1910), edited with and Introduction by Martin E. Marty.

534 Pages | First published in the U.S.A. by Longmans, Green & Co in 1902, published in the Penguin Library in 1982, reprinted in Penguin Classics 1985 | Softcover | Penguin Books Ltd., London | ISBN:

Dutch translation: Vormen van Religieuze Ervaring – Een Onderzoek naar de Menselijke Aard First Dutch publication 1907, sixth revised and extended publication 2010 | Softcover | Abraxas, Amsterdam.

‘Standing at the crossroads of psychology and religion, this groundbreaking work applied the scientific method to humankind’s religious behavior’.

William James believed individual religious experiences, rather than the precepts of organized religions, were the backbone of the world’s spiritual life. His discussions of conversion, repentance, mysticism, and saintliness – and his observations on actual, personal religious experiences – all support this thesis.

In his Introduction, Martin E. Marty discusses how James’ pluralistic view of religion led to his remarkable tolerance of extreme forms of religious behavior, his challenging, highly original theories, and his welcome lack of pretension in all of his observations on the individual and the divine.

From Lecture VIII – ‘The Divided Self and the Process of its Unification’ (p. 168):

” I have ever been the queerest mixture of weakness and strength, and have paid heavily for the weakness. As a child, I used to suffer tortures of shyness, and if my shoe-lace was untied would feel shamefacedly that every eye was fixed on the unlucky string; as a girl I would shrink away from strangers and think myself unwanted and unliked, so that I was full of eager gratitude to any one, who noticed me kindly; as the young mistress of a house I was afraid of my servants, and would careless work pass rather than bear the pain of reproving the ill-doer; when I have been lecturing and debating with no lack of spirit on the platform, I have preferred to go without what I wanted at the hotel rather than to ring and make the waiter fetch it. Combative on the platform in defense of any cause I cared for, I shrink from quarrel or disapproval in the house, and am a coward at heart in private while a good fighter in public. How often have I passed unhappy quarters of an hour screwing up my courage to find fault with some subordinate, whom my duty compelled me to reprove, and how often have I jeered at myself for a fraud as the doughty platform combatant, when shrinking from blaming some lad or lass for doing their work badly. An unkind look or word has availed to make me shrink into myself as a snail into its shell, while, on the platform, opposition makes me speak my best. “
