The Application of Yoga to Daily Life (Adyar Mini)

By Ianthe H. Hoskins.

28 Pages | First edition 1969, 3rd reprint 2002 , Adyar Mini| Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592003.

From the Foreword:

” To study yoga without attempting to translate it into practice is like studying the technique of car driving without ever taking the car from the garage. Yoga is a practical science, and its value to the student can be appreciated only when the theoretical study is translated into experience. The questions and notes which follow may provide a starting-point for those, who feel the need of some simple and precise suggestions in applying what they have studied to everyday life. “

The notes in this Adyar Mini Booklet are intended as an introduction to the deeper study of the Yoga Sutra-s of Patañjali available in various translations. For further reading, The Still Mind by Roy Agard and Rāja Yoga – A Practical Course by Wallace Slater, are recommended.

The Hidden Wisdom in the Holy Bible – Volume III

By Geoffrey Hodson (1886 – 1983).

345 Pages | First edition 1971, reprinted in 1992 | Hardcover | Thr Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170591732.

Volume III – The golden grain of Wisdom in the Book of Genesis. (Genesis chapters twenty-five to fifty).

In this Third Volume, Geoffrey Hodson offers the fruits of his attempts to delve into the Books of the Old Testament in search of truths, that he believes to be timeless and which, if applied, could profoundly affect those living in this present war-threatened, and actually war-torn, age in which (wo)man possesses the power of self-examination.

From ‘The Hidden Wisdom and why It is concealed’ (p. ix):

” The greatest degree of power, which occult science can bestow is to be derived from knowledge of the unity and interaction between the Macrocosm and the Microcosm, the Universe and Man. ‘The mystery of the earthly and mortal man is after the mystery of the supernal and immortal One’, wrote Éliphas Lévi (1810 – 1875), Lao Tzu (6th century BC) also expresses this truth in his words: ‘The Universe is a man on a larger scale’. “

The late Geoffrey Hodson is the author of The Brotherhood of Angels and Men and Clairvoyant Investigations.

An Introduction to the Mahatma Letters

By Virginia Hanson (1898 – 1991).

25 Pages | First Edition 1977, first reprint 1986 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170590256.

Today’s Encounter with the Wisdom of the Ages.

The philosophy of The Mahatma Letters is timeless; the story of The Mahatma Letters is in time. What results is a cross-fertilization from which a rare kind of drama emerges – a drama in which, quite unexpectedly at times, one sees oneself and the whole of humankind reflected with pitiless clarity. Tragedy and comedy, courage and cowardice, pathos, compassion, frustration and fulfilment, despair and hope – all these are there as in life through-out the millenia of recorded, and unrecorded history. What is there, in addition, is a perspective which gives it all meaning.

From page 4:

” The question would not arise if those concerned knew something of what an Adept is, as explained in The Mahatma Letters . . . Writing about Themselves, one of Them says: ‘None of you have ever formed an accurate idea of the ‘Masters’ or of the Laws of Occultism they are guided by . . . The Adepts do not advertise Themselves, nor do they seek followers. Their work, for the most part, lies away from the world, whose ways are not their ways. If we understand this, there will be none amongst us ready to lend an ear to persons, who seek to impress others by claiming occult connection with mysterious beings, or that they themselves are the manifestations of such beings. “

The Gospel of Peace (According To Guru G. Sahib)

By Duncan Greenlees (1899 – 1966).

404 Pages | World Gospel Series: First Edition 1952, 2nd edition 1960, 3rd edition 1968, 4th edition 1975, 5th edition 1994 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592364.

Sikhism is the religion taught through Guru Nanak in the forms of the Ten Gurus, and now through the Guru-Granth Sahib and the whole community of disciples. It is a practical way of life that does not involve itself in verbose theorizing but leads a man straight to his goal.

To protect the young community of disciples (Sikhs) that had become subject to persecution, the sixth Guru converted it into a semi-military brotherhood, arming it with outward insignia and sacraments, and thus subjecting it to the purifying fires of martyrdom, which instilled the necessary courage and resolution in its heart. The Sikhs should therefore have a great place in the future of their country, as so pure and spiritual a religion as theirs has already a great place among the religions of the world.

From Chapter 6 – ‘The Way to God’ (p. 294):

“7. Happiness is not for those, who make many friends in the world; it is those who keep the mind on the One, who ever enjoy happiness (K. śloka 21). The servants serve [Him] who uplifts [them] by kindness; dewy is the night of those in whose heart is a yearning [for Him] (N.Āsa di vār, 5 Sl.2). Bliss is in the heart which delights in love [N. Barah Maha, 16], so there is always bliss for devotees; they are put into ecstasy by singing the excellences of God (Ar.Āsa, 10:2). “

The Gospel of Zarathushtra

By Duncan Greenlees (1899 – 1966).

438 Pages | World Gospel Series: third reprint 2003 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592585.

The literary language in Zarathushtra’s days in Eastern Irān was the dialect of Avesta (an Aryan tongue close to Sanskrit) known to us as Gāthic. This has generally been assumed, because more primitive in form, to be older than the normal Avesta, but as Jackson suggested it is quite as likely to be a geographic, not chronologic, variation – for Bactria is far from Persis.

Two books in this Gāthic dialect survive, both of them forming part of the Yasna included in the original Stot-Yasht Nask. These two books are the Gāthās and the Haptanghaiti Yasna (Y.35-42) and considered two most important sources for the Prophet’s teachings. Of the Prophet it was Khwāja Kamāluddin, who said: ‘Zoroaster was the true Prophet of God’.

AIRYEMA-ISHYO

” To both men and women of Zarathushtra, may the dear Friendship, the grace of Love, come down! I pray for that precious reward, the blessing of Righteousness, which is won through the Faith – a longing which the Lord God satisfies. (Y.54:1).

Zarathushtra closes his Divine Message by invoking God’s full blessing and intimate fellowship upon all who loyally and righteously serve the Cause of his Religion. So may it be! “

The Gospel of Israel

By Duncan Greenlees (1899 – 1966).

438 Pages | World Gospel Series: First Edition 1955, first reprint 1987, second edition 1991 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170591384.

The Gospel of Israel is at the same time like and unlike every other. It is the story of a great love, changeless through the ages and filled with a noble purpose of universal good. It tells how the infinite and eternal God, a most loving and lovable Personality, created the universe solely that He might share that love which is His inmost nature with created beings and give them the infinite satisfaction of directing that love to Himself, its only worthy object.

This is the story of the infinite Lover’s great love for a people representing all humanity, and for every individual who identifies himself with its great ideal. But as love can only thrive in an atmosphere of good will, it is also the story of the highest ethics. As we treat others, so will God’s laws treat us; and if we would enjoy His love, we must reflect it on all with whom we come in contact.

From Chapter 6 – ‘Human Life’ (p. 199):

” No nation has suffered like Israel, or the Jews, though few have clung more closely to their code of ethics or their God; so the problem of undeserved suffering has always haunted the Jewish mind. All alike know sorrow, but that sorrow can be found sweet by the righteous, because God uses it to purify and teach him, and then rescues him from the affliction. Though he prosper not in things of the world, happier is the poverty of the righteous man contented with his little than the excessive luxury of those, who do not look to God. “

The Gospel of Islam

By Duncan Greenlees (1899 – 1966).

Islam is the religion of self-surrender to God, which alone can bring peace to the world and peace to the Soul of man. It was given to the world more than thirteen centuries ago through the life and preaching of Muhammad the Prophet of Arabia. But it does not derive from him, and claims to be nothing but a re-statement of the natural and primeval religion of the world, dropping the accretions that time brings in to corrupt it from age to age.

It teaches that all the universe, seen and unseen, was brought into being at a word by the One and Only God, whose Nature is perfect Goodness, absolute Justice, and almighty Power. To man, God has given reason and conscience as a guide towards righteous life in accordance with His will. To make man’s path in life easier to trace, He has sent down in all ages and to all people of the world His messengers, to teach the ways of peace and to warn against unrighteous paths.

82. And Kind to Parents

” 1 | Your Lord has ordained Goodness to parents; if one or both of them reach old age in your presence, do not say ‘Pooh!’ to them, nor scold them, but speak to both of them with polite words, and make yourself tenderly submissive and gentle, and say, ‘My Lord, have compassion on them both, just as they cared for me when little.’ (17:23-24). “

Reflections on India

By Gopalakrishna Gandhi.

26 Pages | First edition 2001 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170594324.

‘Where does the real India reside?’‘ asks the author, for India is a land of enormous disparities and contradictions. In 1916, his grandfather Mahatma Gandhi denounced before an august assembly at Varanasi the existence of pomp and wealth amidst degrading penury, filfth around holy places, and the domination of a foreign language over native tongues. He also pronounced other unpalatable truths.

This lecture contains and eloquent description of the same contradictions, existing even today all over India, because the same attitudes of callousness and cruelty continue. But there is also an aquifer of goodness that is essentially Indian, which must be tapped and never allowed to run dry.

‘What we are, the world is’. Here is a compelling call to every Indian to tap that goodness and be what is needed for the redemption of the nation.

From page 10:

” Where does India, the real India, reside? Not in cities, surely, where money grows but humanity shrinks; where you have, for example, this hush so wonderful, this air so pure, but just beyond, a steaming slum which bravely, hopefully (perhaps sarcastically?) is called ‘Jasmine Town’ (mallippoo nagar). Soweto in Johannesburg, the world’s most famous informal settlement, is an eldorado compared to the slums in India’s cities, slums that are home to what Valentine Chirol in his essay on Kalighat described as ’tangled knots of perspiring humanity’. Is this, the Theosophical Society, which affords divine knowledge (brahmajñana), the real thing, or is it mallippoo nagar? “

Does India have a Future?

By Rajmohan Gandhi.

32 Pages | First edition 1994 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592275.

The deep commitment of this grandson of Mahatma Gandhi to the well-being of India led him to participation in the public life of the nation and to being a member of the Rajya Sabha. The present publication consists of the Besant Lecture delivered at the annual international convention of the Theosophical Society, Adyar, Madras in 1993.

Rajmohan Gandhi is Research Professor at the Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi and was formerly Editor of Indian Express and Himmat. Among his well-known publications are: The Rajaji Story; A biography of his grandfather C. Rajagopalachari: a biography of Vallabhbhai Patel; and Eight Lives: A Study of Hindu-Muslin Encounter.

From page 20:

” Was God absent-minded then when designing the Indian character? Is the Indian Soul inferior in quality? No! No with a dozen exclamation marks! Often the Indian citizen is heroic in his or her response to the trials of every day, fighting for standing room, for elbow room, for space in the place of work, in the home and on the way from one to the other, for a place in school or college, or for a job. Where in the world do you see greater endurance? Our failing is that we evoke one another’s worst rather than best. “

Social Roots of Gender Injustice (Besant Lecture 2001)

By Madhu Dandavate (1924 – 2005).

17 Pages | First reprint 2005 | A Besant Lecture given at the Theosophical Society, Adyar, Chennai on Thursday, 27 Dec. 2001 | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170594804.

Gender injustice is an evil that exists even today, though in a less virulent form than in earlier times. In this lecture, Prof. Madhu Dandavate traces the roots of this inequality from mythological to contemporary times and the involvement of social reformers like Dr. Annie Besant, Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi in attempting to wipe out this black spot in civilized nations.

Prof. Madhu Dandavate, freedom fighter for Indian Independence, former Union Cabinet Minister in India and author of several books on social and political issues, is a well respected public figure in India. He is known for his tireless work and commitment to social issues.

From page 17:

” With my criticism of social orthodoxy on the question of gender injustice, my speech may please some and displease others. In this context, I would like to conclude by again quoting Dr. Annie Besant, who wrote in her autobiography:

‘Here, as at other times in my life, I dare not purchase peace with a lie. An imperious necessity forces me to speak the truth as I see it, whether the speech please or displease, whether it brings praise or blame. That one loyalty to Truth I must keep stainless, whatever friendships fail me or human ties be broken. She may lead me to the wilderness, yet I must follow her she may strip me of all love, yet I must pursue her, though she slay me, yet will I trust in her; and I ask no other epitaph on my tomb but;

‘SHE TRIED TO FOLLOW TRUTH’ “

The Idyll of the White Lotus

By Mabel Collins (1851-1927), with an explanation by Swami T. Subba Row (1856 – 1890).

206 Pages | First edition 1884, 2nd to 9th reprint 1896 – 1973, second edition 2000 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170593999.

Dutch translation: De Idylle van de Witte Lotus | Ankh-Hermes | ISBN: 9789020255409.

This tale of a young seer in a decadent temple in Ancient Egypt is at once gripping and profound. It depicts the evolution of a Soul from weakness to strength, from ignorance to insight – a pure but unthinking child becomes a wise messenger.

From the Prologue:

” Behold, I stood alone, one among many, an isolated individual in the midst of a united crowd. And I was alone, because among the all the men my brethren, who knew, I alone was the man who both knew and taught. I taught the believers at the gate, and was driven to do this by the power dwelled in the sanctuary. I had no escape, for in that deep darkness of the most sacred shrine, I beheld the light of the inner life and was driven to reveal it, and by it was upheld and made strong. For indeed, although I died, it took ten priests of the temple to accomplish my death, and even then they but ignorantly thought themselves powerful. “

Light on the Path and an Essay on Karma (Standard)

By Mabel Collins (1851-1927).

81 Pages | First Adyar Edition 1911, Adyar Centenary Edition 1982, second reprint 2000 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170590116.

Dutch publication: Licht op het Pad, part of the publication Drie Wegen, Een Pad | First published in 2006 | Hardcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 9061750881.

‘A TREATISE, Written for the personal use of those, who are ignorant of the Eastern Wisdom and who desire to enter within its influence. Written down by MC’.

The book itself begins with the statement, that ‘These rules are written for all disciples’. The latter description is surely the more accurate one, as the history of the book will show. As we have it at present it was dictated by the Master Hilarion through the mediumship of M.C. – a lady well known in Theosophical circles, who at one time collaborated with Helena Petrovna Blavatsky in the editorship of Lucifer. The Master Hilarion received it from his own Teacher, the Great One. One, who among Theosophical students is sometimes called ‘The Venetian’; but even He is the author only of part of it. It has passed through three phases; let us set them down in order.

It is but a small book even now; but the first form, in which we see it is smaller yet. It is a palm-leaf manuscript, old beyond computation; so old that even before the time of Christ men had already forgotten its date and the name of its writer, and regarded its origin as lost in the mists of prehistoric antiquity. It consists of ten leaves, and on each leaf are written three lines only; for in a palm-leaf manuscript the lines run along the page, and not across it as with us. Each line is complete in itself – a short aphorism. In order that these thirty lines may be clearly distinguishable, they are printed in this edition in black type. The language in which these aphorisms are written is an archaic form of Sanskrit. The Venetian Master translated them from Sanskrit into Greek for the use of His Alexandrian pupils, of whom the Master Hilarion was one in His incarnation as Iamblichus. Not only did He translate the aphorisms, but He added to them certain explanations, which we shall do well to take along with the original.
From page 15:
” These rules are written for all disciples: Attend you to them.
Before the eyes can see they must be incapable of tears. Before the ear can hear it must have lost its sensitiveness. Before the voice can speak in the presence of the Masters it must have lost the power to wound. Before the soul can stand in the presence of the Masters its feet must be washed in the blood of the heart. “

Poems

76 Pages | Published in 1964 | Softcover| Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | No ISBN.

This little work consists of a selection of poems written by the sisters Codd.

From page 1 & 2:

To The God In My Heart

” Ah! Thou most beautiful,
Mysterious, pure,
And high above my Soul as life and death,
Whence comest thou?
Dear God! Dear God!

Ah! Thou strange visitant,
And yet not strange,
My soul cries for Thee through the veil which
. . . shades
My clearer sight,
And loves, loves, loves.

Whence comes that wondrous world,
Still, far, and sweet,
Which opens to my soul, and makes my heart
Stand still, forget
She lives, she beats?

Ah! I have lived so long,
Eternities!
Such long, long years surge in my memory,
Such years and years
Of long-dead sweets.

So, then. within the circle of these arms,
As though a cross upheld through all the worlds;
So, then, within the boundary of his heart,
Grown greater than the seas, and deep as hell;
Come thou, O world, I that have ache of thee,
And pity that shall fill a thousand years
For every tear of thine! And thee, thou soul
Amongst all other souls so well-beloved,
If thou hast will to come –

Aye! If thou art blind, and know not –
Little one, come! “

” There are vast and immutable laws governing the progress of life. This is its science. Most of us are merely children in the great school of life and are learning by experience something of these great laws. But there must be those, who know them thoroughly, and therefore share their power. William James, the psychologist, once said that all great thinkers presuppose that there must be behind every different form of human knowledge a root knowledge. What would that root knowledge be? Surely the great art and science of life itself. Occultism, about which we hear so much these days, has been defined by a great occultist as: ‘The Science of Life and the Art of Living’.

Just as in the science of mathematics where there are the children learning that two and two make four and the great professors of the science, like Albert Einstein, for example, so in the great school of life there are the scholars of varying degrees of growth and attainment, and also the great professors of that Science of all sciences and that beautiful Art of all arts. For untold ages in the history of this planet great master-minds, sages and adepts have garnered this deeper knowledge, and have handed it on from one generation to another; and now, in these modern days, they have lifted a tiny corner of the veil, which screens this tremendous knowledge, and gives us, through their pupils, an outline of the universal principles which govern all life. What these are, and how they illuminate life for us, we shall now try to describe. “

The Way of Self-Knowledge

By Radha S. Burnier (1923 – 2013).

62 Pages | First edition 1971, first reprint 1980, 2nd reprint 1984, 3rd reprint 1993, 2nd edition 2000 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170594189.

The Blavatsky Lecture – delivered at the Annual Convention of the Theosophical Society in England, 26th May 1979.

To reach Nirvana one must reach Self-knowledge and Self-knowledge is of loving deeds the child’.

Progress in Theosophy is the journey from the unreal to the real, from darkness to light, from death to immortality. The beginning of that progress is in understanding that the infinite cannot be known by the finite. The imperishable cannot be found by involvement in the perishable and the compounded. The study of Theosophy in the true sense is the study not only of Theosophical literature; it is the study of the book of life, the observation of human nature, the contemplation of Nature and the phenomena of the created world in such a way that there is a sense of the One Existence.

From page 58:

Freedom from Attachment

” The unlimited creative power of consciousness can operate only when the limitation of attachment ends and identification is not made with objects. In  freedom from attachment, there is the discovery of another of the eternal values inherent in consciousness. Since in the absence of inward freedom the other absolute values are incapable of flowering, spiritual liberation has been spoken of in the East, as the fundamental aim of human existence. “

No Other Path To Go

Door Radha S. Burnier (1923 – 2013).

87 Pages | First edition 1985, second reprint 2005 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592763.

‘Within you is the light of the world- the only light that can be shed upon the Path. If you are unable to perceive it within you, it is useless to look for it elsewhere’.

The destiny of the human being is to travel on a path leading to perfection. the Upanishad says this spiritual path is like ‘the sharp edge of a razor, difficult to cross and hard to tread. A teacher or a guru may at best give a hint or indicate the direction of the path, but the aspirant has to tread the path by himself.

This little volume describes the nature of the path, the qualifications needed, and the pitfalls encountered. As the theosophical classic Light on the Path says: ‘Each man is to him- or herself absolutely the way, the truth and the life’.

From Page 56:

” One of the greatest of Masters, the Lord Buddha, said: ‘Be a lamp unto yourself.’ He taught: do not make an authority out of tradition, the Scriptures, other people, or me; find out for yourself what is the truth. The importance of enquiry (vichāra) is emphasized also in Vedānta. “

Living Truth – The Future of the Theosophical Society (Blavatsky Lecture 2005)

By Radha S. Burnier.

34 Pages | First edition 2006 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN:

The Theosophical Society exists for the regeneration of humanity, beginning with establishing a nucleus of Universal Brotherhood, encouraging an open-minded quest for Truth, and investigating the essence of man and the universe. Because this is the main thrust of the Society, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891), co-founder of tbe Theosophical Society with Colonel Steel Olcott (1832 – 1907), discussed what would ensure the stability of the Society’s work and its future in her book The Key to Theosophy.

The ‘Blavatsky Lecture’ discusses in depth what she regarded as necessary for continuing the work of regeneration without a break. Apart from essential qualifications like earnestness, selflessness, devotion, knowledge and wisdom, ‘living truth’ must dynamize the workers of the Theosophical Society. But what is ‘living truth’? The reader will learn by perusing this lecture and realize how much we can ensure peace and goodness upon the earth.

From page 22:

. . . we never accept on faith any authority upon any question whatsoever; nor, pursuing as we do, Truth and progress through a full and fearless enquiry, untrammelled by any consideration, would we advise any of our friends to do otherwise. ” – Blavatsky – CW II, p. 433.

Madame Blavatsky on How to Study Theosophy

By Robert Bowen (1815 – 1908).

18 Pages | First published in 1960, reprinted in 1967, first Indian edition 1979, 3rd reprint 1973 – 1992, 4th reprint 1997 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170591910.

Robert Bowen’s personal notes on the teachings of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891) provide an invaluable aid to the student today. They offer insights into the study and understanding of the essentials of Theosophy, particularly of Madame Blavatsky’s major work The Secret Doctrine (1888). They also point to their impact on the mind of the serious student, who is urged to go beyond verbal expositions of Theosophy to the depth of experience where alone truth is revealed.

From page 12:

” (D) Fourth and last basic idea to be held is that expressed in the Great Hermetic Axiom. It really sums up and synthesizes all the others. As is the Inner, so is the Outer; as is the Great so is the Small; as it is Above, so it is Below; there is but ONE LIFE AND LAW; and he that worth it, is ONE. Nothing is Inner, nothing is Outer; nothing is Great, nothing is Small; nothing is High, nothing is Low, in the Divine Economy. “

The Original Programme of the Theosophical Society

70 pages Paperback | Theosophical Publishing House Adyar, 2002

This volume is of great interest for all, who wish to delve into the historical roots of the Theosophical work, both exoteric and esoteric. The programme of the Theosophical Society is mentioned in an article written by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891) in 1886:

  1. Universal Brotherhood;
  2. No distinction to be made by the member between races, creeds, or social positions, but every member had to be judged and dealt by on his personal merits;
  3. To study the philosophies of the East — those of India chiefly, presenting them gradually to the public in various works that would interpret exoteric religions in the light of esoteric teachings;
  4. To oppose materialism and theological dogmatism in every possible way, by demonstrating the existence of occult forces unknown to science, in nature, and the presence of psychic and spiritual powers in man; trying, at the same time to enlarge the views of the Spiritualists by showing them that there are other, many other agencies at work in the production of phenomena besides the “Spirits” of the dead. Superstition had to be exposed and avoided; and occult forces, beneficent and maleficent — ever surrounding us and manifesting their presence in various ways — demonstrated to the best of our ability.

181 Pages | First edition 1951, reprint 1986 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 817059037X.

It is a strange series of events that letters written by H.P.B. to a friend of her youth, Prince Alexander Mihailovich Dondukov-Korsakoff – some of them written from the Adyar Headquarters – should finally find their resting place in the Archives of the Theosophical Society in Adyar.

From page 16:

” My dear prince, you are interested in my life? Yes, you are right, for never has one of your compatriots been led by his mocking destiny into more original and unexpected situations than I have; situations both terrible and grotesque; heights and depths; one day on the level of the stars beyond the solar system, the next day in bottomless abysses. Such is my life and my fate that stake on my rise and fall like drunken stock-brokers. I am now on the rise and by God I will remain there even though I should be obliged to allow my army of Theosophists to crown me Queen-Prophet of Ceylon or Assam- and this under the very nose of the English, of whom half in India adore me and the other half detest me! “

Zoroastrianism

By Annie Besant (1847 – 1933).

44 Pages | First edition 1963, second edition 2005 | Paperback | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170594685.

Annie Besant (1847 – 1933), second President of the Theosophical Society (1907 – 1933) was described as a ‘Diamond Soul’, for she had many brilliant facets to her character. She was an outstanding orator of her time, a champion of human freedom, educationist, philanthropist and author with more than three hundred books and pamphlets to her credit. She also guided thousands of men and women all over the world in their spiritual quest.

In 1896, Dr. Annie Besant gave four Convention Lectures on Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, Buddhism and Chrisitianity at Adyar, Madras, on the twenty-first anniversary of the Theosophical Society, the President-Founder, Colonel Henry Steel Olcott (1832 – 1907), being in the Chair. In 1901, she continued the series with another four lectures on Islam, Jainism, Sikhism and Theosophy or ‘Divine Wisdom’ as the common source of all religions at the twenty-sixth anniversary, Colonel Olcott again presiding. Each of the lectures on the seven religions has been published as a separate booklet with the exception of the lecture on Divine Wisdom, and the whole series as a single volume under the title Seven Great Religions.

From page 37:

” Zarathustra gave the words of power that could call down the fire down from above, and century after century, the fire that blazed on the Zoroastrian altar in the fire-temple was no mere mingling of material flames. The sacred fire was called down from fiery ākāśa; at the word of the priest, it fell upon the altar, and blazed there as the living symbol of God. When the lower priesthood had to act (when the higher one was not available), they were given the rod, in which the living flame or fire was ever flashing, and, as when they touched the altar fuel with it, the heavenly fire blazed forth. “

The Universal Wisdom Tradition and the Theosophical Society

By Annie Besant (1847 – 1933).

29 Pages | 6th Reprint | Pamphlet | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8179593492.

Every great religion has two parts, an inner and an outer, a spirit and a body, the ‘knowledge of God’, which is ‘Eternal Life’ and its dogmas, rites and ceremonies. The inner part, ’the wisdom of God in a mystery’, spoken of by St. Paul as known to ’the perfect’, is that which has, since the third century, been known in the West as Theosophy: in the East as Brahmā-vidyā, God-Wisdom, God-Knowledge or God-Science. Such Theosophy, or mysticism, the direct knowledge of God by man, belongs equally to all the great religions as their sustaining life. And it may be possessed by any individual, even outside any religious organization.

NB: This pamphlet was previously printed under the title of Theosophy and The Theosophical Society (1931, 1952 & 1985) as an excerpt from a larger work of that title by Annie Besant. The title has been changed to avoid confusion between the two works.

Hardly a moment of our waking life passes without thoughts. Are thoughts material? What do they look like? We assume, that being silent and unnoticed by others, ideas and thoughts are insignificant, but each one of them is that much of an unique power, positive or negative for us or others in the measure of its quality and intensity. This is clearly brought out in this publication – first published in 1901 – with the aid of many vivid coloured plates and graphic drawings conveying the power of thought.

The Seven Principles of Man

By Annie Besant (1847 – 1933).

111 Pages | First Adyar Edition, 12th reprint 2015 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 9788170590972.

This book is the first in a series of manuals intended to meet the need for a simple exposition of Theosophy. It describes in clear terms the seven aspects of man’s nature based on theosophical precepts. Its aim is to lead the casual enquirer to a deeper study of the philosophy, science and religion of Theosophy and ultimately to a realization of the central objective of the Society, the Brotherhood of man and the possibility of spiritual growth.

From page 2:

” Man, according to the Theosophical teachings, is a sevenfold being, or, in the usual phrase, has a septenary constitution. Putting it in another way, man’s nature has seven aspects, may be studied from seven different points of view, is composed of seven principles. The clearest and best way of all in which to think of man is to regard him as one, the Spirit or true Self; this belongs to the highest region of the universe, and is universal, the same for all: it is a ray of God, a spark from the divine fire. This is to become an individual, reflecting the divine perfection, a son that grows into the likeness of his father. “

The Nature of Memory

‘MEMORY is but a function of the mind, and the answer given to the question, ‘What is memory?’ must turn on the answer given to the larger question, ‘What is mind?’ ‘Is there a Self or Ego, of which mind, as we know it, is a part; or is mind only the outcome of matter in motion, so that the Self has no real existence? Is mind anything more than an ever changing succession of perceptions and congeries of perceptions, and these the outcome of nervous activity responding to stimuli, peripheral and central? Or is it a definite mode of being, with perceptions et hoc genus omne as material on which it works; with faculties whereby it perceives, reproduces, recollects, conceives; but no more as a whole to be identified with its functional activities than the body as a whole consists of eating, breathing or digesting?’

Sanatana-Dharma, An Advanced Text-book of Hindu Religion and Ethics

268 pages | Gebonden/Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House Adyar, 2000

The wisdom of inspired Seers is recorded in various Samhitas, Sutras, Smrtis and other fragments. The corpus of all these is Sanatana Dharma, Eternal Order of Dharma. Through millennia, Hindu society was moulded by it. Though necessarily Indian in garb, its principles have a timeless relevance to any society, anywhere, any time.

It is striking that the first ever serious attempt at drawing from the vast, nebulous, scattered sources the principles of Sanatana Dharma and codifying them was left to Annie Besant, foreign by birth, but more truly Indian than an Indian could be. In compiling this brilliant work, she was ably assisted by a team of eminent Sanskrit scholars headed by no less a savant than Bharata Ratna, Dr Bhagavan Das.

A reading of this book is in itself a liberal education.

Reïncarnation

By Annie Besant (1847 – 1933).

95 Pages | First edition 1892, twelfth reprint 1999 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592348.

From the Preface:

” Few words are needed in sending this little book out into the world. It is a Manual designed to meet the public demand for a simple exposition of Theosophical teachings. Some have complained that our literature is at once too abstruse, too technical, and too expensive for the ordinary reader, and it is our hope that the present series may succeed in supplying what is a very real want. Theosophy is not only for the learned; it is for all. Perhaps among those who in these little books catch their first glimpse of its teachings, there may be a few who will be led by them to penetrate more deeply into its philosophy, its science, and its religion, facing its abstruser problems with the student’s zeal and the neophyte’s ardour.

But these Manuals are not written for the eager student, whom no initial difficulties can daunt; they are written for the busy men and women of the work-a-day world, and seek to make plain some of the great Truths that render life easier to bear and death easier to face. Written by servants of the Masters who are Elder Brothers of our race, they can have no other object than to serve our fellow-men. “

Man and His Bodies

166 Pages | Second edition, 2nd reprint, 2015 | Hard cover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar

This book attempts a simple exposition of Theosophical Teachings. It is a manual, which seeks to make plain some of the great Truths, that render life easier to bear and death easier to face. The first step, it is said, is to realize that we are not our body. We have bodies.

Once the distinction between the self (the human being) and our bodies is accepted, the study of the various bodies proceeds smoothly. The study concludes that the bodies are our instruments, our servants, adapting to our various needs and growing powers. Ultimately, we go beyond our bodies and realize our ´true Self´, in ourselves as also in others.

” In the early days of Christianity, ere the mass of te unlearned had crushed out the Gnostic minority; ere the loss of the teaching of Reïncarnation had attached the everlasting fate of man to his conduct during a few brief years on earth; in those early days the word SALVATION had a grandiose meaning.
