Het Geheim van Zelf-Realisatie – Pratyabhijñā Hridayam van Kṣemarāja

Door  Iqbal Kishen Taimni (1898–1978).

94 Pagina’s | Eerste druk 1997, tweede druk 2004 | Gebonden | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 9789061750734.

English original: The Secret of Self-Realization2004 | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170591287.

auteur: Taimni, I.K.
ISBN: 9789061750734
Additional DescriptionMore Details

Gayatri – The Daily Religious Practice of the Hindus

By I.K. Taimni (1898 – 1978).

225 Pages | 2003, Eighth edition | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Wheaton | ISBN: 8170590841

Gāyatrī is the most renowned of the Vedic mantras. Addressed to Savitr, symbolizing the Supreme Light of all Lights, it forms part of a traditional Hindu sacrament. But in reality, there is nothing Hindu about it. A lofty prayer, unmatched in its sublimity, it is as well a prayer for the whole of humanity.

A japa or meditative utterance of it needs no accompanying rite and anyone can reverentially participate in it. Prof. Taimni succinctly treats all aspects of the sacred mantras.

From the Introduction:

” The japa (meditative utterance) of the Gāyatrī is an integral part of the daily practice of the Hindus (saṃdhyā). This shows that Hindu sages (rishis) attached the greatest importance to it not only in the life of those Hindus, who were deeply religious and were seriously pursuing the ideal of spiritual emancipation (moksha), but also in the life of the average Hindu, who was living the ordinary worldly life in the pursuit of so-called happiness. In order to understand why Hindu sages were regarded the japa of Gāyatrī so essential, all that is necessary for us is to detach ourselves for a while from the current of worldly life and look at the condition of the vast number of people, who are resistlessly being borne along that current. As long as we remain a part of that current and do not look at life deeply and impersonally, we fail to notice things, which should be obvious to any intelligent person.

Een Weg tot Zelfontdekking

By Iqbal Kishen Taimni (1898–1978).

317 Pages | Uitgave in 1989 | Softcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 9789061750604.

English original: Self-Culture in the Light of Occultism, this later became: Self-Culture in the Light of the Ancient Wisdom | First edition 1945, 2nd revised edition 1967, 3rd printing 1970, 4th printing 1976 | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 9788170592792.

De Yoga-Sūtra’s van Patañjali

By Iqbal Kishen Taimni (1898–1978).

516 Pagina’s| Eerste druk 1975, achtste druk 2018 | Hardcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 9789061750758.

English original: The Science of Yoga – A Commentary on the Yoga-Sūtra’s of Patañjali in the Light of Modern Thought | First published in 1961, 2010 edition | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 9788170592112.

Questions from the City, Answers from the Forest

By Ajahn Sumano Bhikku.

183 Pages | First Quest edition 1999 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835607747.

” Sincere inquiry always sparks our movement towards truth. Deep questions signal the manifestation of the very energy through which we outgrow ourselves. “

So writes Ajahn Sumano Bhikku, American-born Buddhist monk now living in a simple meditation cave in Thailand. Born in Chicago, a law school graduate and real estate professional, Sumano abandoned his comfortable American lifestyle for the shaved head, begging bowl, and rigorous meditation schedule of a forest monk. In 1994-1995, Sumano conducted a series of question and answer evenings at a guest house in Thailand’s Kowyai National Park with English-speaking tourists. The heartfelt questions of these city people and the clear answers Sumano gave from his forest perspective form the basis of this remarkable book. Written on a battered,  battery-powered laptop in his meditation cave, Sumano’s fascinating personal story and his refreshingly down-to-earth blend of American sensibility and Eastern practice will fascinate newcomers to Buddhist ideas as well as experienced practitioners.

Studies in de Bhagavad Gītā

Door Tallapragada Subba Row (1856 – 1890), vertaald door Margreet  Meijer-Kouwe met een historisch overzicht door Henk J. Spierenburg.

200 Bladzijden | 1999, Oorspronkelijk verschenen in The Theosophist februari 1886 / juli 1887, Adyar | Hardcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 9061750784.

English original: The Philosophy of the Bhagavad Gītā – ‘Four Lectures delivered at the 11th Annual Convention of the Theosophical Society, held at Adyar on December 27-30, 1886’ | Published in 1921 by The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN unknown.

Annie Besant – A Character Sketch

By William Thomas Stead (1849 – 1912).

100 Pages | First edition 1946, first reprint 1993 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592440.

Well-known humanist and journalist W.T. Stead writes of Annie Besant (1847 – 1933): ‘there are few living women, who have in them more of some elements of the Christian saint, than this fiery assailant of the Christian creed.’ He traces the various phases of her search for truth as also the challenges she faces.

From the Foreword by C. Jinarājadāsa (1875 – 1953) (p. viii):

” At last, sitting alone in deep thought as I (Annie Besant) had become accustomed to do after the sun had set, filled with an intense but nearly hopeless longing to solve the riddle of life and mind, I heard a Voice, that was later to become to me the holiest sound on earth, bidding me take courage for the light was near. A fortnight passed, and then Mr. Stead gave into my hands two volumes. ‘Can you review these? My young men all fight shy of them, but you are quite mad enough on these subjects to make something out of them.’ I took the books; they were the two volumes of The Secret Doctrine written by H.P. Blavatsky.   .   .   . I wrote the review, and asked Mr. Stead for an introduction to the writer, and then sent a note asking to be allowed to call. I received the most cordial of notes, bidding me to come (pp340 – 1). “

The Feminine Face of Christianity

128 pages | Paperback | Quest Books, 2003

Even though feminine values have always been at the core of Christianity, its long history has often ignored or marginalized women’s key role in it. Margaret Starbird’s unique view from the feminine perspective serves the need many are feeling to search their traditional faith for fresh meaning and inspiration in these difficult times. This is the second in a series of splendidly illustrated but affordable gift books on the feminine experience of religion (following Gill Farrer-Halls’ The Feminine Face of Buddhism, 2002).

The result is a powerful and lovely tool for contemporary women seeking the Divine Feminine within Christianity. Each chapter includes inspiring sidebar quotes, prayers, poems, liturgies, and meditations—both traditional and modern—to provide manna for the spiritual journey and practice the presence of a God beyond gender, but immanently within reach.

auteur: Starbird, M.
ISBN: 0835608271
Additional DescriptionMore Details

Could Mary Magdalene have been Jesus’ wife? Starbird explores this possibility and the “sister-brides” who accompanied male disciples to forge a new understanding of gender-based faith and of sacred marriage with the Divine. She also gives us the rich heritage of stories about women’s generous service and encouragement for the inner journey, ranging all the way from little-known early saints to Mother Theresa. She points out that fundamental Christian values such as compassion, reconciliation, and the healing of crippled bodies and broken hearts are all strongly feminine in nature. Her view, though, is cooperative rather than contentious: She aims, not to discredit the masculine, but to right the missing gender balance she finds inherent in the faith. Margaret Starbird received a Fulbright Fellowship for study at the Christian Albrechts University in Germany. Author of The Woman with the Alabaster Jar, she travels extensively leading retreats and seminars on reclaiming the Sacred Feminine. She lives outside Seattle, Washington.

The Changing Face of the Hero

By Rodney Standen.

147 Pages | First Quest Edition 1987 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835606163.

‘ The concurrent evolution of our story-book heroes and our collective consciousness. ‘

People need heroes. Heroes are at the heart of our fantasies. But our heroes change with the times. Beginning with Odysseus 2,500 years ago, the author develops his theme on an age to age basis. He demonstrates, that the hero of yesterday, the doer of miracles, has metamorphosed into today’s sophistocated James Bond. The engrossing study of man’s collective unconscious, that results from it, is supported with resource material drawn from Carl Jung, James Joyce, Nikos Kasantzakis, Tolstoy, Hesse, Maugham, and others.

From Chapter 13 – ‘The Ripeness of Time’ (p. 137):

” Were it not for this story and others like it, we could have imagined two vaguely parallel lines and two spirals of dissimilar size, all having as their origin the first Odysseus. One of our parallel lines would contain the ‘true-blue’ tradition of gentlemen, who always know what is and simply is not done. These heroes neither lie nor cheat nor, so far as we know, womanize. Their faces are unmarked by warts, their minds untroubled by temptation to commit even the most venial of sins. In our cynical age, this line may be somewhat undernourished. But in comic books there will always be a superhero; and in every police station or general hospital, at least one character who is, and forever will be, true blue. ”

The first volume of Mr. Sri Ram’s Thoughts for Aspirants was so enthusiastically received, that this second series was compiled for publication. Seeking Wisdom

By Nilakanta Sri Ram (1889 – 1973).

233 Pages | Second reprint, 2004 | Softcover |Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170590701.

From Chapter I – ‘Seeking Wisdom’:

” In the ‘Dialogue’ dealing with the death of Socrates, Plato explains that the true philosopher meets death as a friend and not as an enemy., because he understands the nature of the change, which death brings about. It is a natural and happy change. One’s attitude towards death depends on one’s understanding of life, the true nature of which is inseparable from the truth with regard to death. Philosophy means literally ‘Love of the Wisdom’. These are two words, each of which has an extraordinary and beautiful meaning. It would be well worth while for us to try to understand what the true nature of Love is, and what is really meant by Wisdom, which of course is not mere knowledge. “

22 Pages | First edition 1970, first reprint 1993 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592259.

The Theosphical Society was founded at New York on 17 November 1875. Its three objects are:

  1. To form a nucleus of Universal Brotherhood of Humanity without distinction of race, creed, sex, caste or colour.
  2. To encourage the study of Comparative Religion, Philosophy and Science.
  3. To investigate unexplained Laws of Nature and the powers latent in man.

No doctrine, no opinion, by whomsoever taught or held, is in any way binding on any member of the Society. Approval of its three objects is the sole condition of membership. Members of the Society hold that Truth should be sought by study, by reflection, by purity of life, by devotion to high ideals and that it is not a dogma to be imposed by any authority. The members are bound together not by the profession of a common belief, but by a common search and aspiration for Truth.

Engels origineel: Life Deeper Aspects | Eerste editie 1968 | The Theosophical Publishing House | ISBN: 9780835671729.

Consciousness: Its Nature and Action

By Nilakanta Sri Ram (1889 – 1973).

28 Pages | First edition 2002 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170593921.

In this lecture,, known for his deep understanding of philosophical questions, explores how consciousness loses its sensitivity and gets obscured, but has the potency of awakening into the full light of wisdom. He says: ‘We do not notice the beauty of a cloud or the movement of a leaf or bird and many other things. An artist is needed to paint a picture and point out the beauty‘.

How can we achieve union with the living beings around us, and even to a slight extent be open to the truth and beauty, which are inherent and omnipresent in life? This book offers insights into how the quality of our consciousness can be transformed so that it is constantly renewed, remaining open to the truth of life as it reveals itself.

An Approach to Reality

By Nilakanta Sri Ram (1889 – 1973).

263 Pages | First edition 1951, 3rd edition revised & enlarged 1968, reprinted 1992 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170591856.

This Volume is based on adresses delivered in different places over a period of years, and carefully revised. It contains portions written to elucidate points touched upon in the adresses. They are being printed in this form in the belief, that they may be of some help to those interested in such matters. The subject of Reality is a difficult one, and whatever is in the following pages represents the writer’s approach and is essentially an attempt on his part to define his own understanding. The standpoint with regard to all matters in the book is that of a student of Theosophy; what Theosophy is as seen from his own and unique point of view. To one, who seeks true understanding without that dogmatism, which ever negates the seeking, there is no finality. Seeking implies discovery, and fundamentally, each must come to Truth by him or herself. But there is a value in exchange of views.

Mr. N. Sri Ram was International President of the Theosophical Society from 1953 – 1973; a period of twenty years. He brings to his writings a background of Eastern Wisdom combined with a keen awareness of modern thought and knowledge, as well as a sensitive understanding of human problems. The revealing material, wide-ranging (and thus partly hidden) of H P Blavatsky on the Vedas, is gathered together for the first time in this volume…The word Veda, we are told, is derived from the word vid (to know), and the student is helped to see and to know what perhaps was unperceived before this mother of all Eastern philosophies. We read of Vedic history, the cosmic origin of the Vedas, their esoteric meaning, and we learn…”the Rig-Veda, the oldest of all the known ancient records, may be shown to corroborate the occult teachings in almost every respect.” (from The Secret Doctrine, volume II, p. 606.)

The New Testament Commentaries Of H.P. Blavatsky

Compiled and annotated by Henk J. Spierenburg.

343 Pages | Published in 1987 | Softcover | Point Loma Publications, San Diego | ISBN: 0913004510.

‘Every act of the Jesus of the New Testament, every word attributed to him, every event related of him during the three years of the mission he is said to have accomplished, rests on the programme of the Cycle of Initiation, a cycle founded on the Precession of the Equinoxes and the Signs of the Zodiac’.

The riches concealed in the nearly 10.000 pages of the books and journal articles written by H.P. Blavatsky, the articles contained in fourteen Volumes of her Collected Writings, have so far been valued at their true worth by only very few students. Even many of those, whohave occupied themselves with the products of H.P.B.’s pen all their lives, fail to value them at their real worth.

One, who should be inclined to doubt this statement need only ask one of the above students what are exactly H.P.B.’s ideas about the New Testament from publications by theologians, will no doubt formulate a certain answer. In October, 1889 H.P.B. said: ‘The New Testament is not unity; it is as useless to try to reconcile the meaning of particular words out of their contexts or stereotype a special meaning . . .’ This certainly is saying something.

From the Publisher’s Note (p. VI):

” A universal truth is revealed, concealed for the most part in parables and ‘dark, though beautiful sayings’, but given vibrant meaning when the light of the Ancient Wisdom is shone on them. For here opportunity is given to span the limiting centuries, passing beyond a brief 2.000 years, and from the ageless past to breathe something precious and preserved. We sense here a Wisdom, which is Truth and a Truth which is Wisdom. “

T. Subba Row Collected Writings Vol. II

Compiled and annotated by Henk J. Spierenburg.

654 Pages | Published in 2001 | Softcover | Point Loma Publications, San Diego | ISBN: 1889598313.

This second Volume of the T. Subba Row Collected Writings covers such subjects as esoteric teachings on rays, chakras and women adepts, as well as a wide range of subjects including Gautama Buddha, the Human Monad, Devachan and Subba Row’s insightful commentary on the Bhagavad Gītā. Within these pages the reader can find material for deeper spiritual and intellectual reflection in harmony with the root ideas of the Theosophical Renaissance initiated by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky in 1875. Subba Row’s genius lent high energy and spiritual insight in this impetus and these two Volumes now add significantly to the Wisdom treasure of the already published Volumes of Blavatsky Reference Books compiled by Henk J. Spierenburg.

From Chapter – ‘The Idyll of the White Lotus by T. Subba Row’ (p. 397):

” The interesting story published under the title above mentioned had already attracted considerable attention. It is instructive in more ways than one. It truly depicts the Egyptian faith and the Egyptian priesthood, when their religion had already begun to lose its purity and degenerate into a system of Tantric worship contaminated and defiled by black magic, unscrupulously used for selfish and immoral purposes. It is probably also a true story. Sensa is represented to be the last great hierophant of Egypt. Just as a tree leaves its seed to develop into a similar tree, even if it should perish completely, so does every great religion seem to leave its life and energy in one or more great Adepts destined to preserve its Wisdom and revive its growth at some future time when the cycle of evolution tends in the course of its revolution, to bring about the desired result. The grand old religion of Chemi is destined to reappear on this planet in a higher and nobler form when the time arrives, and there is nothing unreasonable in the supposition that the Sensa of our story is probably now a very high Adept, who is waiting to carry out the commands of the Lady of the White Lotus. Apart from these speculations, however, the story in question has a very noble lesson to teach. In its allegorical aspect it describes the trials and the difficulties of a neophyte. “

Search for Values

By Soli J. Sorabjee.

19 Pages | Besant Lecture delivered at Adyar, Dec. 1992, first published in 1995 | Booklet | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592623.

The moral worth of a society or a community is reflected in its aspirations and the ideals it pursues, the values it cherishes and its sincerity in upholding those values, Throughout history, humanity’s chief concern has been the disovery and preservation of values, which impart grace and significance to civilization and also to individual human lives. One of the cruellest paradoxes of our times is that an age that has witnessed tremendous scientific progress and technological development has at the same time also witnessed unprecedented decline in moral and spiritual values.

From page 17:

” If I can stop one heart from breaking

I shall not live in vain

If I can ease one life the aching or cool one pain

Or help one fainting robin unto its nest again

I shall not live in vain. “

Waarheid is een Land zonder Paden – Een Reis met Krishnamurti

Door Ingram Smith.

230 Pagina’s | 1991 Editie | Softcover |  Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 9789061750659.

Engels origineel: Truth is a Pathless Land – A Journey with Krishnamurti | Uitgegeven in 1989 | Theosophical Publishing House.

A Dictionary of Gnosticism

273 pages | Paperback | Quest Books, 2009

An amazing storehouse of information, A Dictionary of Gnosticism, contains nearly 1,700 entries, from Aachiaram, an angel in the Secret Book of John, to the Zostrianos, a third-century Gnostic text that recounts a series of revelations on the successive stages of the soul’s ascent. With an easy-to-read introduction explaining who the Gnostics were and what Gnosticism is, Smith delivers a whirlwind tour through the ancient and diverse history of this captivating movement.

auteur: Smith, A.P.
ISBN: 9780835608695
Additional DescriptionMore Details

As editor of The Gnostic magazine and author of several books on apocryphal scriptures, Andrew Phillip Smith draws on his extensive knowledge of Gnosticism to provide a succinct yet thorough compilation for scholars and spiritual seekers alike. Smith not only defines the terminology of the Nag Hammadi library and the ancient Gnostics, but also their successors such as the Manichaeans, Mandaeans and Cathars. His definitions also cover Hermeticism, the apocrypha, medieval heresy, dualism, and the modern Gnostic revival. “Andrew Phillips Smith offers us yet another key opportunity to expand our knowledge of Gnosticism. A fascinating, solidly-researched key resource for students, academics, and practitioners alike “A ‘beacon of Light’ for our time! Highly recommended.”— Dr Karen Ralls, Oxford, author of The Templars and the Grail. Blockbuster films like The Matrix and Stigmata have helped fuel the continued fascination with Gnosticism, a pre-Christian Western religion based on the direct knowledge of the Divine, which itself provides salvation. Although The Matrix conveys complex concepts like archons and dualism with marvelous simplicity, Gnostic texts do anything but. Curious new students of Gnosticism find they are swiftly bombarded with numerous foreign, often un-translated, and barely pronounceable terms like ‘Acinetos’ and ‘Deitharbathas’. Now for the first time, a comprehensive guide to all aspects of Gnosticism and related spirituality is available to the public in a straightforward dictionary. Andrew Phillip Smith was born and grew up in Penarth in south Wales in the United Kingdom and took his degree in computer science at the University College of Wales, Swansea. From 1987, Andrew worked in computing in London, including a two-year stint providing technical support for the publishers Harcourt Brace. From 1997-2007 Andrew lived in Northern California near the Sierra Nevada mountain range, where he began his writing career. In his time he has busked on the streets of London playing a small harp, delivered leaflets, worked as a security guard, as a letterpress printer and as a librarian to a private library. Andrew’s previous titles include The Gnostics: History, Tradition, Scriptures, Influence and several books in Skylight Paths’ annotated and explained series: The Lost Sayings of Jesus, The Gospel of Philip, and Gnostic Writings on the Soul. Beyond the Postmodern Mind – The Place of Meaning in a Global Civilization (1989 edition)

By Huston Smith. (1919- 2016).

281 Pages | First Quest Edition  1984, 2nd edition 1989, 3rd printing 1992. | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835606473.

NB: This is the second edition (1989): its latest and third edition (2003) can be purchased in our Webshop here

This study was first published in 1982 and is considered a classic in its disciplined analysis of contemporary reductionist philosophy. It explores the limits of science and points society’s way out of the dark woods where science has stranded us. Smith uses the term ‘modern’ mind to denote the so-called Enlightenment outlook of Newtonian physics and rationalism, which cut the ground from under the religious foundations of Western life. In the ‘post-modern’ age of the late nineteenth and the twentieth centuries, people lost their humanistic confidence.

Although science may have won a battle ove religion, it has in the process undermined its own empirical foundation: and having destroyed confidence in intuitive revelation, the mind is (as H.G. Wells once suggested) ‘at the end of its tether’. Despite the ravages of analytical philosophy and existentialism, Smith feels there is a fundamental view of reality, that flourishes throughout the world under various disguises. The uneasy post-modern mind, Smith says, awaits discernment of a new metaphysics.

From Chapter 3 – ‘Perennial Philosophy, Primordial Philosophy’ (p. 70):

” A life, that identifies primarily with its physical pleasures and needs (getting and spending we lay waste our days) is superficial;

one that advances its attention to the mind can be interesting if it moves on to the heart (synonym for soul), it can be good.

And if it passes on to spirit – that saving self-forgetfulness and egalitarianism in which one’s personal interests loom no larger than those of others – it would be perfect. “

223 Pagina’s | Paperback |Rozenkruis Pers, Haarlem |ISBN: 9067322776

Rāja Yoga – A Simplified and Practical Course (2006 edition)

By Wallace Slater.

134 Pages | First edition 1968, reprinted in 1972, first Adyar edition 2006 | Hardcover | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170594782.

NB: This is the most recent edition, the older (hence cheaper) 1972 edition can be purchased in our Webshop here.

Of all forms of yoga, which are taught and practised in the East, Rāja Yoga is considered the kingly science; it aims at the development of man’s full potential and the expression of his inner spiritual ‘Self’. In this small volume, the author offers the basic technique of this ancient classic system of yoga in a graded practical ‘do-it-yourself” course divided into 10 lessons.

The instructions include posture, right attitudes and, most importantly, methods of meditation. This simplified course will be of inestimable value in aiding the student to find a means of inner quiet amidst the rush and turmoil of a busy life, to discover new insights and to realize himself as an integrated human being.

From the Introduction (p. 1):

” The term ‘yoga’ is now generally applied to many forms of asceticism, meditation and spiritual training whether practised by Hindus, Buddhists or Christians. It is, however, primarily an ancient Indian form of discipline, which has been modified by later Indian writers, adopted by Buddhists and practised in the West in many different forms by people professing the Christian faith or none. It is therefore to India, that we look for the original source material.

Yoga, derived from ‘yuj’, implies, ‘ to bind together’, ‘to yoke’, and, in this sense, its practice is to unite the individual spirit of man with the greater Spirit of God (Īśvara), or with the Oversoul of humanity. But first, there must be an unbinding, a separation of the external from the internal, of the ‘profane world’ from the spirit. This is achieved by various yoga practices, which aim to withdraw consciousness from the periphery to the centre, from the material world of our outward senses to a calm, inner centre of reality, variously called Spirit, truth, Wisdom, the ‘Self’, ātman. “

NB: This is the older 1977 edition, the most recent 1994 edition can be purchased in our Webshop here.

Yoga is a process by which the Laws of Nature are intelligently an deliberately applied to daily life in order to realize in full self-consciousness, one’s identity with the Supreme. There have been many books published on yoga and more recently a fair number has appeared on Hatha Yoga. This Simplified Course was prompted by requests for an ordered course of training in the form of lessons, which could be spread over a period of 20 to 40 weeks. It was also required, that the exercises should be critically selected to include only those, which could be readily used by people in the Western modern world without risk and without the need for personal instruction. Lastly, the course was required by  busy people, who could only spare a short time each day for its practice.

From LESSON 1 (p. 8):

D. Meditation

” Think selectively. Choose what you are going to think about, then think seriously about it. This is not just an early morning exercise, this is for the whole day. Try to make all thinking during the day more definite and clear. In particular, think optimistically. “

The Theatre of the Mind – Evolution in the Sensitive Cosmos

By Henryk Skolimowski (1930 – 2018).

167 Pages | A Quest Original, first edition 1984 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835605884.

This stimulating book of ‘evolutionairy illuminations’ expresses the eonic drama of our eternal growth – from instinct to intuition. Skolimowski is a constant delight and surprise as an image-breaking philosopher/scientist/mystic. He establishes his position as an intrepid spokesperson for ecologically sound progress. He writes irreverent things in a reverent manner. From Prometheus to Prigogine, through a philosophy founded on experience, he develops the law of progressive development based on an ever-growing sensitivity to life.

From the Introduction (p. 21):

  1.  ” The coming age is to be seen as the age of stewardship: we are here not to govern and exploit, but to maintain and creatively transform for the benefit of all beings.

  2. The world is to be conceived as a sanctuary. We belong to certain habitats; they do not belong to us. They are the source of our culture and our spiritual sustenance. We must maintain their integrity and sanctity.

  3. Knowledge is to be conceived, not as a set of ruthless tools for atomizing nature, but as ever more subtle devices for helping us to maintain our spiritual and physical equilibrium. “

Ecofilosofie

Door Henryk Skolimowski (1930 – 2018).

140 Pagina’s | Uitgegeven in 1985 | Softcover | Uitgeverij Markant, Nijmegen | ISBN: 9067720011.

Engels origineel: Eco-philosophy | Uitgegeven in 1981 | Boyars Boston / London.

Politiek bewust, 9. Sociaal geëngageerd, 10. Met nadruk op individuele verantwoordelijkheid, 11. Tolerant ten opzichte van transfysische verschijnselen, 12. Gezondheidsbewust. “

The Occult World

181 pages | Paperback | Theosophical Publishing House, 1984

In September and October 1880, H.P. Blavatsky and Colonel Henry Olcott visited A. P. Sinnett and his wife Patience at Simla in northern India. The serious interest of Sinnett in the teachings and the work of the Theosophical Society prompted H. P. Blavatsky to establish a contact by correspondence between Sinnett and the two Adepts who were sponsoring the Society, Mahatmas Koot Hoomi and Morya.

From this correspondence Sinnett wrote The Occult World (1881) and Esoteric Buddhism (1883), both of which had an enormous influence in generating public interest in Theosophy. In The Occult World, Sinnett gave lengthy excerpts from his early correspondence with Mahatma KH. Sinnett also related in detail many of the occult phenomena Mme. Blavatsky performed when she was in Simla.

Creative Living

By Ramjivan Sinha.

39 Pages | First edition 1970, first reprint 1993 | Booklet | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592267.

We learn from the study of Theosophy, the Ancient Wisdom, that while man is alive, his inner principles, namely Spirit, Intuition, Intellect, lower Manas and Kama, all are mixed together; that at our best moments we get some rays of Light or inspiration from the higher principles and we produce a beautiful work of art. And that there are moments when we fall back from such heights and are prone to karmic influences, which lead to contradictions in life. Very often, therefore, we find instances of self-indulgence, moral laxity or looseness, physical imbalance, loneliness or depression in the lives of artists. We are trying to discover ways of total creative living, in which there is no such contradiction, in which the life-stream flows freely and smoothly, in all its loveliness and beauty all the time . . .

From page 39:

” It has been said (above), that the constant openness of one’s being is an essential pre-requisite for discovery. To this may be added an attitude of constant helpfulness. As the plants and trees are pouring themselves out all the time for the joy of all around, so also the individual must learn to give, to serve and to sacrifice with joy. ‘What is the best that I can give or contribute? What way can I serve best’? Such questions the individual should, off and on, put to him or herself, in quiet moments and in solitude. The deep within will probably give the answer, and if one is open and alert, one will listen and discover one’s true vocation. “

A teacher is in reality the inner being by the side of God, in the region of Truth, clothed in Divine Mercy and Glory . . . O brother and sister, know for certain that this work has been before thee and me, and that each man and woman has already reached a certain stage! No one has begun this Work for the first time . . .

From page 82:

THE HEART

” There is a treasure buried in the heart of the knower, It is LOVE. A single jewel out of it is worth a thousand heavens. The guardian of heaven is an Angel named Rizwân, whereas the guardian of the treasure of LOVE is God. Know that thy merit is assured by what thou seekest. If thou worshippest to obtain heaven or avoid hell, thou worshippest thy own desires. If thou seekest or fearest an object, thou are the worshipper of that object. Thy real value depends on what is in thy heart. If thou heart is attached to God, thou art a divine man or woman. “

The Passionate Necessity – A View of Human Purpose

By Hugh Shearman, jacket design by Jane A. Evans.

135 Pages | First published in 1962 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835602001.

The author of this book offers a unique approach to the discovery of meaning and purpose, which he suggests involves the transformation of our lives by realizing our own infinite potential. He writes of the search for the One, which has been passionate necessity of mystics of all faiths throughout the ages. While speaking from the heart, he does not deny the value of reason and mind, but suggests the necessity of penetrating beyond to that center within, which is stable and firm and amid the changing universe.

Dr. Hugh Shearman, an honor graduate in history, in which he earned the Ph.D. degree, has long been interested in philosophical and metaphysical subjects. He is the author of some twenty titles, which include The Purpose of Tragedy and Desire and Fulfillment.

From Chapter XIX – Immortality (page 129:

” The One remains, the many change and pass.

Heaven’s light for ever shines; Earth’s shadows fly.

Life like a dome of many-coloured glass

Stains the white radiance of eternity. “

The Purpose of Tragedy

By Hugh Shearman.

88 Pages | First edition 1954, reprinted 1992 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170591937.

The object of this little book is to introduce theosophy as an interpretation of human tragedy. It is the introduction and interpretation of one individual and excludes no other among an almost infinite variety of possible approaches to the subject. Much of it has necessarily been written in the spirit of ‘Thus have I heard.’ Yet, the principles that we receive and communicate in this spirit can often become alive and become our own as they are found to respond to the demands of experience. One short and simple interpretation of human tragedy, human freedom, and many other problems, has been a constant source of illumination to the writer. It is a Chapter from The Wonder Child, a little book by Curuppumullage Jinarājadāsa (1875–1953), a revered former President of the Theosophical Society and one, who devoted his life to the lightening of human sorrow and the healing of human conflict. This Chapter from The Wonder Child is printed as an Appendix at the back of this book.

From Chapter 11 – ‘Grace and Healing’:

” It has been the testimony of many that, for those who will remain steady and fulfil their life’s tragedy through to its end, there is always a gift at the bottom of the pit of darkness, and at the end of the longest tunnel shines a star. Sometimes, in the shorter conflicts and tensions of life, this gift comes in the form of a healing or harmonising of a new kind. Sometimes such terms as ‘spiritual healing’ or ‘divine healing’ are used. Sometimes expressions are used, which speak of ‘forgiveness of sins’ and the ‘bestowing of grace’. “

A Guide to Work in the Theosophical Society

By Hugh Shearman.

164 Pages | First edition 1959, second revised edition 2007 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar.| ISBN: 9788170595229.

This book is a new edition of To Form a Nucleus, a comprehensive guide to work in the Theosophical Society. It covers all aspects of the work of the Sections and Lodges of the Society, and gives information on the formation of the Lodges, the maintenance and running of their premises, libraries, book sales, propaganda material, the organization of talks and lectures, the administrative work of office-bearers and so on. An excellent reference book for Lodges as well as individual members.

From Chapter X – The Theosophical Worker (p. 164):

” It is essentially fear of the unknown and dependence on the known that create the bleak and barren state of indecision. Fear, therefore is to be sought out and brought to the surface in our lives and dissipated, and dependence is to be recognized and challenged as to its worth. It is not enough that our Theosophy should come to us on good authority. We shall never be happy until we bring it to the test of living experience and find sacrifice is a reliable way of life. Then, we shall be happy and effective workers and not merely dutiful ones. “

Desire and Fulfilment

By Hugh Shearman.

84 Pages | First edition 1956, first reprint 1988 | Softcover | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170591007.

The great problems of all, who try to lead a good life lie not in knowledge, but in volition. It is often said, that the great barrier is ignorance; but if ignorance is to be taken to mean mere lack of information, this is not the whole truth. Our difficulties often arise, not because we do not know what to do. but because we do not want to do it. In fact, our main problems are in the emotive aspect of our lives. They lie in our sense of purpose and in our experience of emotional and creative fulfilment. If they are problems of ignorance, it is a lyrical and intuitive ignorance and not predominantly an intellectual one. Although several excellent works of long established authority in theosophical literature have expounded the nature of the creative and lyrical aspect of our world and the place of desire and emotion in human life, this is a subject, which, without apology, may be interpreted afresh in a new generation.

From Chapter ‘The Source of Motive’ (p.15):

Earth’s humanity today is just entering upon the transition from one kind of motivation to the other. It is a vast and long transition, extending over many ages and shaping many cultures. Great teachers have given such help as they can, and there are many hints and intimations in the religions, philosophies and poetry of the world. But the great problem cannot be solved for us vicariously. The great transition has to be made by each as well as by all. Exhortation and explanation are not enough; for the great truths are alive in a realm that is beyond the scope and limits of rational or systematic thinking. They cannot be caught and conveyed within a cage of rational explanation. It is more often in the dignity of an act, in the perfect response to a situation, in the rare fragrance of a great teacher’s presence, that the truth is worldlessly conveyed and recognised. ”

Uit de Hut van het Lotusvrouwtje

Door J.M. Selleger-Elout

124 blz. | Gebonden/Hardcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland, ca. 1959 (1ste druk)

The Pilgrim and the Pilgrimage (Wisdom Tradition Books)

By Emily B. Sellon.

108 Pages | First Edition 1996 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835607526.

This volume has been edited from a transcription of the Pumpkin Hollow tapes kindly made by Ann M. and Douglas L. Clemens. In it is offered as a concise statement of Emily’s philosophy and of the metaphysical foundation of Theosophy. Emily was herself president of the New York Lodge during 1950 – 1954 and 1964 – 1968.

From Chapter 1 – ‘Metaphysics and Machinery’ (p. 1):

” What we are going to talk about is essentially metaphysics. In Theosophical studies there are really two approaches. One is metaphysics or the ‘grand principles’ and the other is what I call ‘machinery’. That may seem like a derogatory or pejorative term, but nevertheless that is what it really is. Studies of reïncarnation and karma, or of the cycles and rounds and races and that kind of thing, are really studies of the machinery, that is, the consequences of the working out of metaphysical principles. ”

Buddhism – An Outline of Its Teachings and Schools (Theravada, Mahayana, Vajrayana)

By Hans Wolfgang Schumann.

200 Pages | First Quest edition 1974 | Paperback | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835604527.

WITH 39 DRAWINGS AND PHOTOS.

Both general readers and serious students of Buddhism will welcome the systematic arrangement of material, which makes this book a reliable guide through a vast field of thought. The author worked from original texts, and his work contains many original observations. Of special value is a Tabulated Synopsis of the major systems of Buddhism enabling the student to grasp, almost at a glance, the fine distinctions between them.

From its Preface:

” Five hundred years before the rise of Christianity there originated in India a religious doctrine, which does not make a god or the gods the subject of its thinking , but concentrates on man himself as interwoven with the cosmic cycle. As its author, Siddhattha Gotama, the ‘Buddha’, was convinced of having revealed in this teaching a natural law, he calls it ‘the law’ (p: dhamma, Skt: dharma), thereby simultaneously characterising it as a rule for human behaviour. Aptly, his followers chose the wheel (P: cakka, Skt: cakra) as symbol of the dharma: a symbol of functional unity, of pivotal standstill in movement and, in ancient India, of righteous royal rulership.

[…]

The twenty-four wheel symbol of the righteous ruler (cakkavatin) belongs to the lion-capital of the pillar erected in Sārnāth by Emperor Asoka in the 3rd century B.C. The edict carved in the pillar warns against schism of the monastic order. The lion-capital is today India’s national coat of arms; the wheel was incorporated in the Indian national flag. As a Buddhist symbol, the ‘wheel of the teaching’ may have eight to thirty-six spokes. ”

The Saundarya-laharārī, ‘the Ocean of Beauty’, eminently shares the characteristics of a poem displaying the finest touches of poetical fancy, (ii) a Stotra, hymn, in praise of the Goddess Tripurasundarī, (iii) a series of Mantra-s, mystic formulae, to be used by the Upāsaka along with the corresponding Yantra-s, diagrams, wherein the Devī is to be conceived as abiding, and (iv) an exposition of the Agama-s and Tantra-s, bearing on the worship of the Supreme Being in Its aspect of the Śakti, Creative Energy, known as  the Śrī-vidyā, embodying the underlying principles of Vaidika-dharma and as such having the sanction of the Veda-s. In its first forty-one stanzas it encompasses the Ananda-laharī, ‘the Ocean of the Blisfully Sublime’.

O Daughter of the Mountain! all glory to Thy navel (which may be characterized) in some such way (as) a motionless eddy of the Gangā, a trench for the growth of the creeper of the line of down, with the breasts as buds; the pit for maintaining the sacrificial Fire of the prowess of the flower-arrowed (Kusuma-Śāra); the pleasure-bower of Rati; the mouth of the cavern for the attainment (of Yoga) by Girisa’s eyes! “

Sri Sankara – Life, Philosophy and Relevance to Modern Times (ALS general 14)

Paperback | Adyar Library Series

National and emotional integration is the need of the hour in Indian context. In the global and Universal context equality and brotherhood of man, non-violence, respect for Nature and non-pollution of her elements are burning issues today. Centuries ago Sri Sankara, towering philosopher of Bharat, lived a life and preached an art of living that helped the country in the maintaining, by and large, her emotional and cultural, if not political, oneness through her tumultous age. His philosophy of non-dualism stresses the fundamental unity and total harmony of all beings, animate and inanimate. “Unity alone is real; love it and take refuge in it” the Acarya preached. As the present book shows, all this is a panacea for all the ills of the humanity, now choked in an atmosphere that is dense and polluted with excesses of the industrial and technological revolutions, the political and social upheavals, and an allround degeneracy in morality and ascendancy of violence.
