De Hart Soetra

Door Geshe Sonam Gyaltsen (1941-), vertaling uit het Tibetaans door Hans van den Bogaert

144 Pagina’s | 2020, derde gewijzigde druk | Softcover | Maitreya Uitgeverij, Loenen | ISBN 9789071886171

Digital Dharma – A User’s Guide to Expanding Consciousness in the Infosphere

By Steven Vedro.

223 Pages | First edition, 2007 | Paperback | Theosophical Publishing House, Wheaton | ISBN: 9780835608596

You don’t have to know much about technology to benefit from this witty exploration of how we can develop a ”yoga of teleconsciousness” to become centered in a frantic world. The Infosphere not only affects consciousness, it also reflects it, says Steven Vedro, and it provides teachings for the next step on our journey to wholeness. His guiding metaphor is the chakra system, the body’s esoteric energy centers located at the spine base, pelvis, solar plexis, heart, throat, forehead, and crown. He links each to a form of communication.

• the lowest chakras, concerning safety and survival, relate to telegraphy and telephony
• the middle chakras, concerning power, love, and discernment, relate to radio, television, and the Internet
• the highest chakras, concerning the most evolved consciousness, relate to the newest technologies of digital signal coding, smart devices, and the always-on intelligence of grid computing

To open and heal our internal channels, Vedro provides visualization exercises in each chapters. Now, when the media seems increasingly intrusive, this ingenious book may help us use it to become more compassionate, more balanced, and more aware.

Studies in the Middle Way – Being Thoughts on Buddhism Applied

By Christmas Humphreys (1901 – 1983).

169 Pages | Softcover | Published in 1984 | Curzon Press and the Theosophical Publishing House U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835603067.

This work sets out to emphasize the inner life as a constant moving on and the mover as a pilgrim travelling along an ancient Way. This Way to ultimate Reality was called by Gautama the Buddha the ‘Middle Way’, the Path between the introverted life of contemplation and the extrovert life of action in the world of men. Whilst this book as a whole is of no one school of Buddhism, it aims toward an understanding and also an application of Buddhist principles in Western society, and a means whereby that Way may be traversed.

Dharma

By Annie Besant (1847 – 1933).

78 Pages | 6th Edition, 2011 | Softcover | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 9788170595687.

´Dharma´ is a term, which has now become part of the world vocabulary, but very few know the range and depth of its meaning. Annie Besant (1847 / 1933), having studied the great discourse on dharma of Bhisma in the Mahābhārata, introduces this complex and deep subject to the lay reader. Morality or dharma is subtle, varying from individual to individual, for it is the law by which inner nature unfolds in each one from his or her particular stage of evolution. This is a subject of great relevance to all individuals and nations of the world, treated in this book with the innate Wisdom and intuitive insight of the author.

Lighting the Lamp – An Approach to the Tibetan Path

By Alfred Woll.

158 Pages | A Quest Original, first edition 1992 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835606864.

Why should overcommitted Westerners make time in their schedules for meditation? In this down-to-earth book, Alfred Woll, a Westerner who himself benefited from the practice of Tibetan Buddhism, guides the reader in answering these questions:

  • Why does the typical Western lifestyle of ‘consume-orientation’ lead more often to pervasive dissatisfaction than than to lasting happiness?
  • How can the example of the Buddha’s life and teachings lead to an alternative focus on ‘self-evolvement’ and spiritual development?
  • How can meditation, drawn from Tibetan practice, help Westerners?

Unlike many authors, Woll does not automatically assume that the reader accepts karma and reïncarnation; rather, he presents arguments to help readers make up their own minds. Easy to understand and yet rich in content, this book is ideal for those, who wish to learn more about Tibetan spiritual practice.

From Chapter 15: ‘Selflessness’ (p. 145):

” To stop the samsaric melodrama in which we exist once and for all, we need the realization of selflessness or, as this key Buddhist idea is also called: emptiness. We have seen that our disturbed mental attitudes, such as anger, jealousy, attachment, and so forth, take away our peace of mind. These attitudes are the real troublemakers in our lives. Though, we can certainly reduce the extent to which these negative mind states control our behavior by working on our personality and increasing our mindfullness, in order to eliminate them completely, we have to end our false way of seeing reality. “

Buddhism – An Outline of Its Teachings and Schools (Theravada, Mahayana, Vajrayana)

By Hans Wolfgang Schumann.

200 Pages | First Quest edition 1974 | Paperback | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835604527.

WITH 39 DRAWINGS AND PHOTOS.

Both general readers and serious students of Buddhism will welcome the systematic arrangement of material, which makes this book a reliable guide through a vast field of thought. The author worked from original texts, and his work contains many original observations. Of special value is a Tabulated Synopsis of the major systems of Buddhism enabling the student to grasp, almost at a glance, the fine distinctions between them.

From its Preface:

” Five hundred years before the rise of Christianity there originated in India a religious doctrine, which does not make a god or the gods the subject of its thinking , but concentrates on man himself as interwoven with the cosmic cycle. As its author, Siddhattha Gotama, the ‘Buddha’, was convinced of having revealed in this teaching a natural law, he calls it ‘the law’ (p: dhamma, Skt: dharma), thereby simultaneously characterising it as a rule for human behaviour. Aptly, his followers chose the wheel (P: cakka, Skt: cakra) as symbol of the dharma: a symbol of functional unity, of pivotal standstill in movement and, in ancient India, of righteous royal rulership.

[…]

The twenty-four wheel symbol of the righteous ruler (cakkavatin) belongs to the lion-capital of the pillar erected in Sārnāth by Emperor Asoka in the 3rd century B.C. The edict carved in the pillar warns against schism of the monastic order. The lion-capital is today India’s national coat of arms; the wheel was incorporated in the Indian national flag. As a Buddhist symbol, the ‘wheel of the teaching’ may have eight to thirty-six spokes. ”

Yoga and the Teaching of Krishna

By Ravi Ravindra.

390 Pages | First edition 1998, 1st reprint, 2006 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170593174.

This Volume is a compilation of some of the essays, which Ravi Ravindra (1939 – present), a scientist-philosopher, has written over more than a quarter of a century. These essays have been published in a variety of journals and magazines, some of which are now easily accessible. Brief excerpts from some of his books, Whispers from the Other Shore, Science and Spirit, The Yoga of the Christ, and Krishnamurti: Two Birds on One Tree, are also included in the collection.

Each of the selections here is influenced by yoga and the teaching of Krishna; all of them speak of and are related to the wisdom of the spiritual traditions of India. They range from an exploration of Rita in the Rig Veda and its relation to Yajña and Dharma in the subsequent tradition to a reflection upon the influence of the Indian tradition on contemporary spiritual Masters, such as  J. Krishnamurti (1895 – 1986) and G.I. Gurdjieff (1866 – 1949). Some of the essays deal exclusively with the great texts of India, such as Yoga Sutra and the Bhagavad Gita, while some deal with parallels which can be found with texts from other traditions, such as The Enneads of Plotinus and The Gospel according to Saint John.

Dharma: De Wet van Ons Beste Wezen

Door Joy Mills (1920 – 2015), vertaald door Fay van Ierlant en Peter Smit.

18 Paginas’s | Brochure | Uitgegeven in 2008 | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland, Amsterdam | ISBN: 9789061750895.

Deze brochure onder de titel: Dharma: The Law of Our Best Being | Een artikel in The Theosophist, januari 2006 | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar.

The Smaller Buddhist Catechism

Compiled by Charles Webster Leadbeater (1854 – 1934) and translated by Curuppumullage Jinarājadāsa (1875–1953).

41 Pages | First edition 1902, first reprint 2004 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 817059443X.

This work is a translation of a small Sinhalese Catechism of Buddhism in two parts, called Bauddha Sisubodhaya, which was compiled by Mr. C.W. Leadbeater in 1889, when he was working in connection with the Buddhist Theosophical Society. During the work of teaching in Buddhist Sunday Schools and later in the Buddhist English High School of Colombo (now Ananda College), Mr. Leadbeater found Colonel Olcott’s Catechism far above the grasp of most of the children, as that Catechism was not composed for children. A far simpeler work being urgently needed, Mr. Leadbeater with the help of Buddhist friends put together this little publication.
