Man And The Universe – A Quest

By A.R. Bakshi, Foreword by Radha S. Burnier (1923 – 2013).

136 Pages | First edition 1994 | Softcover | The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170592313.

The ‘Universe’ and ‘Man’, have both been the subject of study by great thinkers through the ages. Man and the Universe – A Quest presents some of the main principles of occult teaching to the ordinary reader and also supplies the serious student with sufficient material for original study offering profuse references to The Secret Doctrine (1888).

From Chapter VII – ‘Laws of Nature & Universal Truth and Order’ (p. 92 & 93):

” The whole life of the universe, according to the Ancients, is a part of a great artistic process cast into rhythmic phenomenal occurrences such as death and rebirth, creation and destruction, time and eternity, space and void, each occurrence symbolises an eternal cosmic movement. This concept of beauty and art in cosmic motion is symbolised as a female aspect of creative energy called in Indian mysticism ‘Durgā’ (the invincible), whose laws are impregnable. “

Selected Studies in ‘The Secret Doctrine’

By Salomon Lancri, translated by Ianthe H. Hoskins.

86 Pages | The English translation was published in 1977 | Softcover | The Theosophical Publishing House Limited, London | ISBN: 0722950713.

French original: Introduction á l’Étude de ‘La Doctrine Secrète’ | Published in 1967 | Editions Adyar, Paris | ISBN: 9782850001420.

Theosophy, or Divine Wisdom, is a hidden science. It is also the ‘Science of the Hidden’. Its field is the invisible. It maintains that everything perceived by the senses has secret depth; the surface of objects, their ‘exterior horizon’, is but the boundary of a ‘darkness filled full with visibility‘, a phrase used by Maurice Merleau-Ponty (Le Visible et L’Invisible, 1964). This ‘second visibility’ makes it possible for those, who have developed the necessary psychic faculties to explore the occult dimension of the universe. It is this interior horizon of things, that is the object of Theosophical Investigation,

From the Foreword (p. 11):

” On close observation, you will find that it was never the intention of the Occultists really to conceal what they had been writing from the earnest determined students, but rather to lock up their information for safety-sake, in a secure safe-box, the key to which is – intuition. The degree of diligence and zeal with which the hidden meaning is sought by the student, is generally the test – how far he or she is entitled to the possession of the so buried treasure. ” – From: The Mahatma Letters to Alfred Percy Sinnett, p. 275.

The Divine Plan

By Geoffrey A. Barborka (1897-1982).

564 Pages | Sixth reproduction 2015 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House Adyar | ISBN: 8170591848.

Dutch translation: Het Goddelijk Plan (2 Delen) | Uitgegeven in 1973 | Hardcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 9789061750321.

This work could be best described as a guide for an in-depth exploration of The Secret Doctrine (1888). Learning topics concerning cyclic evolution, the big cosmic laws, the hiërarchical composition of the universe et cetera are discussed and their underlying cohesion is demonstrated. Challenging concepts – mostly Sanskrit – are explained in a simple way. Geoffrey A. Barborka seems to have mastered the art of letting complicated teachings explain themselves as it were, without the interference of his own opinions and interpretations.

Dutch translation: Aan de Bron van de Occulte Traditie – Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN 9061750490.

This publication represents an historical introduction to the Two-Volume 1978 Edition of The Secret Doctrine. The epoch-making work known as The Secret Doctrine is the magnum opus of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891). Its subtitle is: ‘The Synthesis of Science, Religion and Philosophy’.

The First Volume of The Secret Doctrine came off the Press on 20 October 1888. This fact is recorded by Richard Harte, then in London, and about to leave for India. In a set of the original edition (first printing), now in the archives of the present writer, there is, on the half-title page, a note in blue pencil signed by Richard Harte, which says:

” This is the first copy ever issued. I got it from Printer by special Messenger on the morning of the 20 Oct. ’88 as I was leaving the house 17 Lansdowne Road, with Col. Olcott for India (Col. went personally via Naples), The Second Vol. followed me to India. “ – R.H.

Aan de Bron van de Occulte Traditie

By Boris M. de Zirkoff (1902–1981).

100 Pagina’s | Uitgegeven in 1977 | Softcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN 9061750490.

English original: Rebirth of the Occult Tradition – How the Secret Doctrine of H.P. Blavatsky was written – The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 0835675351.

The Universal Flame – Commemorating the Centenary of The Theosophical Society

By several contributors, edited by L.H. Leslie-Smith and a foreword by John B.S. Coats, international president of the Theosophical Society from 1972 to 1980.

255 Pages| Published in 1975 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 0835675068.

A group of essays by students of the occult concerning man’s immemorial and upceasing quest for reality. The Universal Flame is being published to mark the centenary of The Theosophical Society. The Society was founded in New York in 1875 and later moved its Headquarters to Adyar, now a suburb of Madras in Southern India, but at that time eight miles from the centre of the city. Adyar has remained the spiritual and administrative centre of the Society’s work since the original founders took up their residence here in 1882; and it is therefore a real happiness to present from International Headquarters this collection of essays to a world, in which growing interest in the search for Truth about Man, the Universe and God is becoming everyday more apparent.

From the backflap:

” These things shall be  – a loftier race

Then e’er the world hath known shall rise

With flame of freedom in their souls,

And light of knowledge in their eyes. “

Foundations of Esoteric Philosophy – From the Writings of H.P. Blavatsky

By Helena Petrovna Blavatksy (1831 – 1891) with a foreword and notes by Ianthe H. Hoskins (1912 – 2001).

84 Pages | First Adyar Edition, Fifth reprint 2012 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar. | ISBN: 9788170592211.

Dutch translation: Grondslagen van de Esoterische Filosofie – Uit de Geschriften van H.P. Blavatsky | Uitgegeven in 1992 | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 9789061750673.

Some of the most important statements from the Secret Doctrine of Madame Blavatsky have been extracted and put together in this little book. It is a valuable introduction to the main teachings of the Ancient Wisdom, which Blavatsky said was the common spiritual heritage of humanity. Each passage is briefly introduced by Miss Hoskins, who has added short glossary of terms as an appendix.

For the inquirer, who wishes to learn the fundamental principles underlying the universal Wisdom tradition, this compilation is a stepping stone, but for more ardent students there is material for deep reflection and meditation.

From Chapter ‘Isis Unveiled: A Ten-point Summary’ (p. 72 & 73):

” To sum up all in a few words, MAGIC is spiritual WISDOM; Nature, the material ally, pupil and servant of the magician. One common vital principle pervades all things, and this is controllable by the perfected human will. The Adept can stimulate the movements of the natural forces in plants and animals in a preternatural degree. Such experiments are not obstructions of Nature, but quickenings; the conditions of intenser vital action are given.

The Adept can control the sensations and alter the conditions of the physical and astral bodies of other persons not Adepts; he/she can also govern and employ as he/she chooses the spirits of the elements. He/She cannot control the immortal spirit of any human being, living or dead, for all such spirits are alike sparks of the Divine Essence and not subject to any foreign domination. “

Modern Theosophy – Origins And Intentions – A Trilogy

By Geoffrey A. Farthing (1909 – 2004).

53 Pages | Revised and enlarged edition December, 1999 | Softcover | The Theosophical Publishing House, London | No ISBN.

Theosophy is a relatively recent name for the Ancient Wisdom known from time immemorial, ever since there were minds to apprehend it. It is variously known as the Wisdom Religion, the Ancient Wisdom, the Science of Sciences, Esotericism and Occultism. It has been kept secret to preserve it from distortion, adulteration and misuse. As much of it as was thought wise by two if the Masters was made public for the first time at the end of the 19th century. This was mainly in the writings of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891); something of how this was done is told herein. The word ‘modern’ can only properly be applied to this outpouring, not to the ever-enduring Wisdom itself.

The expressed purpose behind this release of information was the eradication of superstitious ignorance and crass materialism, and the earnest desire to establish a Universal Brotherhood of Mankind on a truly spiritual basis.

From page 45:

” Help Nature and work with her and Nature will regard thee as one of her creators and make obeisance.

And she will open wide before thee the portals of her secret chambers, lay bare before thy gaze the treasures hidden in the very depths of her pure virgin bosom. Unsullied by the hand of matter she shows her treasures only to the eye of Spirit – the eye which never closes, the eye for which there is no veil in all her kingdoms.

Then she will show thee the means and way, the first gate and the second, the third, up to the very seventh. And then, the goal – beyond which lie, bathed in the sunlight of the Spirit, glories untold unseen by any save the eye of the Soul. [V.S. vs 66, 67, 68]. “

Het Onmogelijke Zoeken – Inleiding tot een Westerse Yoga

Door Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891) met memoires van Robert Bowen en commentaar van Henk Dubbink.

133 Pagina’s | Uitgegeven in 1980 | Softcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland, Utrecht | ISBN:  9061750520.

Afkomstig van Deel III – ‘Uit De Geheime Leer, Deel I; Samenvatting (blz. 52):

Theosophical Gleanings

By two anonymous students.

76 Pages | Copyright 1978 | Paperback | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835602265.

In this small book have been collected together articles authored by two outstanding students of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky’s (1831 – 1891) The Secret Doctrine. What makes this collection so unique is that the two authors were contemporaries of Blavatsky, and consequently, their writing reflects the atmosphere, captures the flavor of, the occult community of the late nineteenth century. All who admire  and respect the magnitude of H.P.B.’s philosophy, particularly as expressed in The Secret Doctrine, will find much in this book to enchance their study of the nature of creation and of man.

From Chapter I, ‘Theosophical Gleanings’ or ‘Notes On The Secret Doctrine, Lucifer, Vol. VI, No. 31. London, March 15th, 1890:

” We are literally what our signature says: Two Students, nothing more pretentious. If we are also what has been called ‘communicative learners’, it is because we feel that what have been difficulties to us are probably difficulties to others, and that fellow-students can sometimes lend each other a helping hand over a rough piece of road. In reading ‘The Secret Doctrine’, the student is apt to be confused, even dazed, by the range of erudition, the wealth of illustrations, the abundance of digressions, the number of literary allusions. Devas and Daimons, Dhyani, Buddhas and Kumaras, Yugas and cycles, satyrs and fakirs, alchemists and adept, Manus and Monads, whirl around him in dazzling phantasmagoria, and he rises from hours of effort, his only distinct acquirement a headache.

We have found the most fruitful system of study is to fix on some one thing, to follow it, through all its windings with dogged persistency, steadily hunting it down through the two volumes, disregarding all alluring byways and seductive glades, until there lies before us that one thing in its completeness, with every touch given to it from beginning to end, clear definite, comprehensible. It may be remembered that there was one Proteus who could give the most interesting information, if only you could keep grip on him through all his transformations, until he reassumed his proper shape and became conversable. So, in following the Protean shapes in ‘The Secret Doctrine’, if you can only ‘hang on’ to the end, your reward is true. “

Getting Acquainted With The Secret Doctrine (Study Guide)

By John Algeo.

60 Pages | Study guide, first edition 1981, third edition 2007 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 9780835602099.

This study guide offers an introduction to Helena Petrovna Blavatsky’s (1831 – 1891) Secret Doctrine – The Synthesis of Science, Religion and Philosophy (1888) based primarily on the ‘Bowen notes’, which purportedly record Blavatsky’s own advice. The work borrows freely, however, from the Wisdom and practice of many others as well and formulates questions rather than answers.

Students of The Secret Doctrine differ considerably in their attitude toward the book and its study. The attitude adopted here – namely that it is remarkable and indeed a marvellous book, but that it is not free from error or in any sense a ‘sacred’ text – is not universally held. But John Algeo believes that it is in the Spirit of the Ageless Wisdom and The Secret Doctrine that we should respect each other’s views, without necessarily sharing them.

From Chapter 6 – ‘How to Study The Secret Doctrine’ (p. 21):

” The Bowen notes tell us that ‘reading the S.D, page by page as one reads any other book’ – for example, a textbook – ‘will only end in confusion’. The notes also give suggestions on how to go about studying the work. They advise the student to hold fast to four basic ideas:

  1. The fundamental unity of all existence with two aspects: consciousness and substance;

  2. The vitality of all matter;

  3. The microcosmic correspondence of human nature to the great cosmos because of our oneness with it;

  4. The hermetic order of the universe as a Divine Economy, which is simultaneously a hierarchy of power and a network of equality. “
