Joyful Gnosis: Gnostic Light on Blavatsky’s Wisdom

By Stephan A. Hoeller.

25 Pages | Sunday July 27th, 2003 | Softcover | Theosophical Publishing House, London | No ISBN.

The Blavatsky Lecture delivered at the Summer School of The Theosophical Society in England, the University of Loughborough.

An exploration of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky’s (1831 – 1891) teachings in the light of the embodiment of the Ancient Wisdom known as Gnosticism. The title of this lecture alludes to three specific topics:

  1. The teachings of the foundress and principal teacher of what has been called Modern Theosophy.
  2. The earlier embodiment of the Ancient Wisdom Tradition known as Gnosticism.
  3. The character of this same Wisdom tradition described here as ‘joyful Gnosis’.

From page 5:

” Gnosticism is the teaching based on Gnosis, the knowledge of transcendence arrived at by way of interior, intuitive means. Although Gnosticism thus rests on personal religious experience, it is a mistake to assume all such experience results in Gnostic recognitions. It is nearer the truth to say that Gnosticism expresses a specific religious experience, an experience that does not lend itself to the language of theology or philosophy, but which is instead closely affinitized to, and expresses itself through, the medium of myth. Indeed, one finds that most Gnostic scriptures take the forms of myths. The term ‘myth’ should not be taken to mean ‘stories that are not true’, but rather, that the truths embodied in these myths are of a different order from the dogmas of theology or the statements of philosophy. “

The Letters of H.P. Blavatsky to A.P. Sinnett

By Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891) with an introduction by A. Trevor Barker.

404 Pages | First published in 1925, 1973 facsimile edition | Hardcover | Theosophical University Press, Pasadena, California | ISBN: 9780911500233.

There are several references to the writing of The Secret Doctrine, which show to how great an extent the Masters were themselves responsible for that work. That is why the teaching of H.P.B. ‘remains for us the test and criterion of Theosophy, ‘ by which all other teaching on the subject must be judged.

From the Introduction (p. ix):

” After all, if the Masters do not know what Theosophy is, no one does, because in its essence, purity and completeness it is alone contained in the secret teaching of which the Guardians are the Masters Themselves. That teaching, as stated by H.P.B., ‘ is not the fancy of one of or several isolated individuals, but the fruit of work of thousands of generations of Adept Seers, ‘through who it was handed down from the first Divine Instructors of our Humanity. It is the substratum and basis of all the world-religions and philosophies, but its doctrines are the exclusive possession of none of them. It was the mission of Madame Blavatsky, under the instructions of those Adepts, to give to the world selected portions of that archaic teaching. It should be remembered that an Adept – a Master, is one who has achieved immortality, and therefore has the power to perceive Truth as it is and at will to reflect it without distortion. “

Dynamics of the Psychic World – Comments by H.P. Blavatsky

Comments by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891) compiled by Lina Psaltis.

132 Pages | 1972, Second reprint 2006 | Hard cover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170594863.

Psychic phenomena, magic, hypnotism, spiritualism, planes of perception, dreams, and spiritual progress – these are some of the subjects discussed in this collection of excertps from the writings of one of the most famous occultists of history:

In this small book the compiler has drawn together from various sources some of the important and interesting statements made by H.P. Blavatsky more than a century ago on subjects, which are arousing wide interest today. Her comments not only reveal something of her profound knowledge and wisdom, but are also fascinating, informative and relevant. They contain valuable advice to those who would dabble in psychic realms without being aware of their dangers and pitfalls.

From page 104/105:

” The key in each degree is the ‘aspirant himself’. It is not the fear of God, which is the beginning of Wisdom, but the knowledge of SELF which is WISDOM ITSELF. How grand and true appears, thus, to the student of Occultism who has commenced to realize some of the foregoing truths, the answer given by the Delphic Oracle to all who came seeking after Occult Wisdom – words repeated and enforced again and again by the wise Socrates: MAN KNOW THYSELF . . . ”

The Esoteric World of Madame Blavatsky – Insights into the Life of a Modern Sphinx

By Daniel H. Caldwell.

451 Pages | First Quest Edition 2000 | Hardcover | Quest Books U.S.A. | ISBN: 0835607941.

‘A psychological enigma, a puzzle for future generations, a Sphinx!’

So reads the self-portrait of Helena P. Blavatsky (1831 – 1891), the leading esoteric author of the nineteenth century. Others called her ‘the lady with the magical eyes’. A world traveler and student of religions, Madame Blavatsky was among the first to bring Eastern Wisdom to the West. Her writing affected W.B. Yeats, James Joyce, D.H. Lawrence, L. Frank Baum (The Wizard of Oz), Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Gustav Mahler, Jean Sibelius, Alexander Scriabin, and many others.

These first-hand accounts lead us into the fascinating world of Madame Blavatsky’s soirées, sites of the astounding phenomena that made her a cause célèbre. Famous as magnets for freethinking intellectuals, these gatherings were a forum for her unconventional ideas that anticipated the spiritual and ecological movements of today. But the depth of this enigmatic Sphinx – as related here by family, friends, and even enemies – transcends the fads of time.

From Chapter 1 – ‘Russia 1831 – 1849’ (p. 1):

” Helena was an exceptional child, who at an early age was aware of being different from those around her. Her possession of certain  psychic powers puzzled her family and friends. At once impatient of all authority, yet deeply sensitive, she was gifted in many ways. A clever linguist, a talented pianist, and a fine artist, she was yet a fearless rider of half-broken horses, and always in close touch with nature. At a very early age she sensed that she was in some way dedicated to a life of service and was aware of a special guidance and protection. “

The Secret Doctrine – Abridged and Annotated by Michael Gomes

By Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891), abridged and annotated by Michael Gomes.

257 Pages | Published in 2009 | Softcover | Tarcher/ Penguin Books | ISBN: 9781585427086.

The Secret Doctrine, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky’s masterwork on the origin and evolution of the universe and humanity itself, is arguably the most famous, and perhaps the most influential, occult book ever written. Published since 1888 only in expensive, two-volume editions of some 1400 pages, it has long eluded the grasp of modern readers- until now.

auteur: Blavatsky, H.P./Gomes, M. (ed.)
ISBN: 9781585427086
Additional DescriptionMore Details

This single-volume edition, abridged and annotated by historian and Theosophical scholar Michael Gomes, places the ideas of The Secret Doctrine within reach of all who are curious. In particular, Gomes provides a critical sounding of the book’s famous stanzas on the genesis of life and the cosmos – mysterious passages that Blavatsky said originated from a primeval source and which form the heart of The Secret Doctrine. Gomes scrupulously scales down the book’s key writings on symbolism to their essentials, and offers notes and a glossary to illuminate arcane references. His historical and literary introduction casts new light on some of the book’s sources and on the career of its brilliant and elusive author, one of the most intriguing personages of the nineteenth century. At once compact and representative of the work as a whole, this new edition of The Secret Doctrine brings unprecedented accessibility to the key esoteric classic of the modern era.

Rebirth of the Occult Tradition – How the Secret Doctrine of H.P. Blavatsky was written

Dutch translation: Aan de Bron van de Occulte Traditie – Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN 9061750490.

This publication represents an historical introduction to the Two-Volume 1978 Edition of The Secret Doctrine. The epoch-making work known as The Secret Doctrine is the magnum opus of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891). Its subtitle is: ‘The Synthesis of Science, Religion and Philosophy’.

The First Volume of The Secret Doctrine came off the Press on 20 October 1888. This fact is recorded by Richard Harte, then in London, and about to leave for India. In a set of the original edition (first printing), now in the archives of the present writer, there is, on the half-title page, a note in blue pencil signed by Richard Harte, which says:

” This is the first copy ever issued. I got it from Printer by special Messenger on the morning of the 20 Oct. ’88 as I was leaving the house 17 Lansdowne Road, with Col. Olcott for India (Col. went personally via Naples), The Second Vol. followed me to India. “ – R.H.

The Dream that never Dies – Boris de Zirkoff Speaks Out On Theosophy

By Boris de Zirkoff (1902–1981), compiled and edited by W. Emmett Small.

232 Pages | 1983 | Paperback | Point Loma Publications, California | ISBN: 0913004456.

The fifty selections in this compilation are from the independent Theosophical journal Theosophia, edited by Boris de Zirkoff from its inception in May, 1944, until his death on March 4, 1981, published and edited by Dara Eklund, one of de Zirkoff’s devoted assistants in his later years. It contains farewell words from friends around the world, three photographs of Boris in different periods of his life, and a picture of the Subba Row Medal presented to him on February 23, 1981, by Radha Burnier, President of the Theosophical Society (Adyar) in grateful recognition of his ”untiring efforts, during several decades, to make available to the world the wealth of knowledge contained in H.P.B.’s writings. ”

As the last driving relative of H.P. Blavatsky, Boris de Zirkoff held a unique place in the hearts of all Theosophists, and to them it has always seemed peculiarly appropriate that he should, in the karmis course of events, become the compiler-editor of Blavatsky Collected Writings.

Aan de Bron van de Occulte Traditie

By Boris M. de Zirkoff (1902–1981).

100 Pagina’s | Uitgegeven in 1977 | Softcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN 9061750490.

English original: Rebirth of the Occult Tradition – How the Secret Doctrine of H.P. Blavatsky was written – The Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 0835675351.

The Human and the Divine – Nine-fold Relationship to Śrī Piļļai Lokācārya and Madame Blavatsky

By N.C. Ramanujachary.

172 Pages | First limited edition 1995 | Softcover | Prapti Books, Madras, India | No ISBN.

The lives of Śrī Piļļai Lokācārya and Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891) were irradiated by the Great Ones who are ever seeking for interpreters of Occult Knowledge in the outer world . . . Their contribution and catholicity of thought remain a source of perennial inspiration to the true aspirants of Divine Wisdom.

From Section C – ‘Present and Future of the Thoughts: (p. 136):

” The teachings of any philosopher necessary are expressions of the Eternal Wisdom. Each one has dealt with the reality of the world, the organic relation of all life to the Divine Principle, the workings within the Cosmos, which are all matters of great appeal to a rational human. Stressing the solidarity of man, aiding him and his mind to the cosmic Mind, and leading each to the inevitable state of embracing the whole of the Universe has been the effort of both PL and HPB in their own chosen way. ”

Madame Blavatsky Unveiled

By Leslie Price.

44 Pages | First edition February 1986 | Softcover; (paper) leaflet | Theosophical History Centre, London | ISBN: 0948753005.

A new discussion of the most famous investigation of The Society for Psychical Research.

Founded in 1985, Theosophical History Centre seeks to promote interest in the history of the Theosophical Society and related fields. The paper was first presented on 12 April 1983 and it was subsequently made available in draft in both the parapsychological and theosophical communities.

From page 1:

” Madame Blavatsky, the co-founder of the T.S. was born in 1831. In ‘Spiritual Magazine’, April 1872, she was reported to be directing a Spiritualist society in Cairo, Egypt and after her arrival in New York in 1873 reports of paranormal phenomena around her began to appear regularly in the Spiritualist papers. She was corresponding secretary of the T.S., founded in New York in 1873, of which Col. Henry Olcott was president until his death in 1907. The two chief founders left the U.S.A. for India in 1878 via London, and transferred T.S. headquarters first to Bombay and in 1882 to Adyar. It was during a visit by the founders to Europe in May 1884 that the S.P.R. Committee was formed. The S.P.R, itself was only two years old, and the personnel of Spiritualism, Theosophy and Psychical Research were not then as polarised as they later became. “

The Esoteric She – Articles on Madame Blavatsky’s Life, Work and Teachings

By William Quan Judge (1851 – 1896), compiled and edited by Daniel H. Caldwell.

108 Pages | Published in 1991 | Point Loma Publications, San Diego U.S.A. | ISBN: 0913004-.

May 8, 1991 marks the centenary of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky’s death. In commemoration of this event The Esoteric She has been compiled from the writings of William Q. Judge. This compilation presents a unique collection of Judge’s articles on Blavatsky’s life, work and writings. Judge tells of his first contact with Madame Blavatsky and of his subsequent involvement and work with Blavatksy. He also defends her against several of her critics.

Judge’s position as one of the three chief founders of The Theosophical Society gives this Volume a distinct perspective. Hopefully, the reader will gain a greater understanding of Blavatsky’s life-work as well as a greater appreciation of Judge’s contribution to the Theosophical Cause. For a biographical sketch Mr. Judge and a list of his writings, the reader is referred to William Quan Judge: His Life and Work: compiled and edited by Sven Eek and Boris de Zirkoff, in Echoes of the Orient, (Volume I, pp. xix-lviii), published by Point Loma Publications in 1975.

From Chapter 17 – ‘Conversations on Occultism with H.P.B.’ (p. 100):

” Look here; here’s a man, who wants to know why the Master’s don’t interpose at once and save his business. They don’t seem to remember what it means for a Master to use occult force. If you explode gunpowder to split a rock, you may knock down a house. There is a law that if a White Magician uses his occult power an equal amount of power may be used by the Black One. Chemists invent powders for explosives and wicked men may use them. You force yourself into Master’s presence and you take the consequences of the immense forces around him playing on yourself. If you are weak in character anywhere, the Black Ones will use the disturbance by directing the forces engendered to that spot and may compass your ruin. It is so always. Pass the boundary that hedges in the occult realm, and quick forces, new ones, dreadful ones, must be met.  Then, if you are not strong, you may become a wreck for that life. This is the danger. This is one reason, why Masters do not appear and do not act directly very often, but nearly always by intermediate degrees. What do you say – ‘the dual forces in nature’? Precisely, that’s just it; and Theosophists should remember it. “

Mme. Blavatsky Defended

By Iverson L. Harris.

174 Pages | Published in 1971 | Softcover | Point Loma Publications Inc., San Diego, U.S.A. | ISBN: 0913004014.

Refutation of falsehoods, slanders, and misrepresentations published by the National Broadcasting Company, Truman Capote, Walter Winchell, the John Birch Society, Time magazine and others.

Helena Petrovna Blavatsky was not a revolutionary, except possibly that all efforts toward human enlightenment and decency are a revolution against bigotry, ignorance, hypocrisy, selfishness, superstition and other traits of human nature that tend to corrupt modern civilisation. She was tireless in exposing and opposing these.

What is Theosophy? Theosophy is two-fold. It is an enquiry into the nature of man in his relationship to the universe, and as such incorporates the heart of all the world religions. It is also a way of life. The members of the Theosophical Society are expected to live up to the high ethical principles embodied in the teachings.

From Page 154:

” The universal religion can only be one if we accept the real primitive meaning of the root of that word. We Theosophists so accept it; and therefore say we are all brothers – by the laws of nature, of birth, of death, as also by the laws of our utter helplessness from birth to death in this world of sorrow and deceptive illusions. Let us then love, help and mutually defend each other against the spirit of deception; and while holding to that which each of us accepts as his ideal of truth and unity – i.e., to the religion which suits each of us best – let us unite to form a practical nucleus of a Universal Brotherhood of Humanity without distinction of race, creed, or color. “

Bibliography of H.P. Blavatsky

By Jean-Paul Guignette.

12 Pages | Softcover/leaflet | First British Edition June 1987 | Theosophical History Centre, London | ISBN: 0948753056.

This bibliography consists of biographical studies on Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891), the main founder of the XIXth Century Theosophical Movement. This is the second edition and it includes corrections, changes and a few additions. As the contents of the books herein quoted are often very diverse in nature, they have been dealt with under several chapters according to their characteristics. Apart from some rare exceptions, only original editions of these works have been mentioned. The subsequent reprints (except if they involve important changes, or corrections) and the various translations into foreign languages have been omitted.

The numerous articles on H.P. Blavatsky published in magazines, as well as the vast number of books mentioning her incidentally, have been purposely left out. No doubt, as it stands, the present bibliography does not cover the whole ground and may be improved upon in the future – thus, all suggestions are welcome.

NB: No quote; the bibliography solely consists of book titles.

The Right Angle – H.P. Blavatsky on Masonry in Her Theosophical Writings

Compiled by G.A. Farthing.

84 Pages | 2003| Softcover |Theosophical Publishing House, London –  in collaboration with The Blavatsky Trust

These extracts from Helena Petrovna Blavatsky’s (H.P.B. ‘s) voluminous works are intended to give some information about Masonry and the flavour of her thinking on the subject as she dealt with it over the period of her writing from 1875 – 1891.

H.P.B. was exposed to Masonry via relatives and friends in her formative years, and later many of her associates were Masons. Among them were some, including Colonel Olcott (1832 – 1907), who helped in the founding of the Theosophical Society and became its first President. At the time of the founding of the Theosophical Society, however, there had been no public exposition of Theosophy. Later, there were intimations of it in Isis Unveiled and in many of H.P.B’s early writings. The great comprehensive teaching only came out in The Secret Doctrine published in 1888.

The significance of this in the matter of Masonry vis-a-vis Theosophy is that with the publication of the theosophical teachings sometimes hitherto closely guarded occult secrets were made public for the first time. Against this, as the reader of the extracts will perceive, the really significant secrets of Masonry, relating to the nature and processes of Nature herself, had been lost from early times.

Het Onmogelijke Zoeken – Inleiding tot een Westerse Yoga

Door Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891) met memoires van Robert Bowen en commentaar van Henk Dubbink.

133 Pagina’s | Uitgegeven in 1980 | Softcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland, Utrecht | ISBN:  9061750520.

Afkomstig van Deel III – ‘Uit De Geheime Leer, Deel I; Samenvatting (blz. 52):

Het Bijzondere Leven en de Invloed van Helena Blavatsky – Stichster van de Moderne Theosofische Beweging (2de herziene druk 2008)

Door Sylvia Cranston (Anita Atkins) (1915 – 2000) en research assistent Carey Williams.

651 Pages | Eerste druk 1995, tweede herziene druk 2008; vertaling van de Engelse third and revised edition | Hardcover | Theosophical University Press Agency, Den Haag | ISBN: 9789070328719.

Engels origineel: HPB: The Extraordinary Life and Influence of Helena Blavatsky, Founder of the Modern Theosophical Movement | Published in 1993 | Path Pub. House, Sausalito, California; in cooperation with the Institute of Noetic Sciences | ISBN: 9780966211511.

The Letters of H.P. Blavatsky – Volume 1 1861-1879

656 pages | Gebonden/Hardcover | Quest Books, 2003

A Psychological Enigma, A Puzzle for Future Generations, a Sphinx!

This unparalleled offering contains all known letters H.P.B. wrote between 1860 and the time just before she left for India in 1879. Meticulously edited by John Algeo, former President of the Theosophical Society in America and current Vice President of the international Society, the volume also contains letters to and about Blavatsky, articles, and editorial commentary.

Helena P. Blavatsky (1831-1891) is widely celebrated as the leading esoteric thinker of the nineteenth century who influenced an entire generation of artists and intellectuals and introduced Eastern spirituality to the West. Until now, however, readers have been able to know this fascinating woman only through her public writings. Few may have realized that H.P.B. was also a tireless correspondent with family and colleagues, friends and foes, the learned and the simple. Her personal correspondence reveals for the first time the private H.P.B. in all of her sphinx-like complexity rarely visible in her published material.

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Among them are controversial and colorful letters, like the one H.P.B. sent to the director of the Russian secret police offering to join their ranks. Also documented are her attempts to begin a Society of Spiritualists in Cairo, Egypt and the tragic and at times comedic troubles she experienced in doing so. You will receive a behind-the-scenes look at the establishment of the Theosophical Society and of the heated debates, both internal and external, surrounding its emergence. And you will experience H.P.B.’s infectious enthusiasm as she corresponds about beginning her first published work, Isis Unveiled. The first of four planned volumes being presented as the H. P. Blavatsky Collected Letters Series, this book delivers all you didn’t know about H.P.B. and with the humor and eloquence of her spellbinding personality. Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831-1891) was born of a noble family in Russia. She became a student of metaphysical lore, and traveled to many lands, including Tibet, in search of hidden knowledge. In the 1870s she went to New York and, with Col. Henry S. Olcott and others, formed the Theosophical Society, an organization dedicated to: – Fellowship among all peoples of the world – Encouragement of the comparative study of religion, philosophy, and science – Investigation of the unexplained powers and forces at work in nature and in humankind.

PREFACE

The articles on Helena Petrovna Blavatsky that appeared in the monthly magazine ‘Lucifer’, after her death in 1891, were published the same year in a Memorial Volume. In 1931, to commemorate the centenary of her birth, a reprint of that book, with some additional material, was published by The Blavatsky Association of London.

Both the earlier editions have long been 0ut of print. The present photo-offset reprint is being published in the year of the hundredth anniversary of her passing as a tribute to this greatest Theosophist of our age.

THE PUBLISHERS.

Bombay, 8th May 1991.

From page XI:

” The inspiration given by Madame Blavatsky has indeed been incalculable in regard to this inborn desire and determination to find the PATH, and to attain, at whatever cost, the realisation of the true SELF. For she showed, as has been shown from time immemorial, that the WAY lies within; that each man has the power to work out his own salvation without the intervention of any deity other than his own highest SELF. In the Doctrines of Reincarnation and Karma with which Madame Blavatsky familiarised the West, are to be found the arbiters of Man’s fate – wholly just, yet, when rightly understood, wholly merciful, and the ultimate appeasers of mortal sorrow. “

H.P.B. Speaks – Volume 2

By Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891), edited by Curuppumullage Jinarājadāsa (1875–1953)

181 Pages | First edition 1951, reprint 1986 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 817059037X.

It is a strange series of events that letters written by H.P.B. to a friend of her youth, Prince Alexander Mihailovich Dondukov-Korsakoff – some of them written from the Adyar Headquarters – should finally find their resting place in the Archives of the Theosophical Society in Adyar.

From page 16:

” My dear prince, you are interested in my life? Yes, you are right, for never has one of your compatriots been led by his mocking destiny into more original and unexpected situations than I have; situations both terrible and grotesque; heights and depths; one day on the level of the stars beyond the solar system, the next day in bottomless abysses. Such is my life and my fate that stake on my rise and fall like drunken stock-brokers. I am now on the rise and by God I will remain there even though I should be obliged to allow my army of Theosophists to crown me Queen-Prophet of Ceylon or Assam- and this under the very nose of the English, of whom half in India adore me and the other half detest me! “

H.P.B. Speaks – Volume 1

248 Pages | First edition 1950, reprint 1986 | Hardcover | Theosophical Publishing House, Adyar | ISBN: 8170590361.

There exist in the Archives of the Theosophical Society at Adyar certain manuscripts of H.P.B. Among them all, the most interesting historically is her Diary for 1878, which is published in this work. Furthermore, letters written by H.P. Blavatsky  from 1875 onwards and some extracts from Scrapbook No. 1. are included.

From page 105:

” That I was called Heliona (not Helen as people call me) – a Greek name derived from that of the Sun-Helios- because (1st) there was an eclipse of the luminary on that day, who knew prophetically, one must infer, that it would be eclipsed for long years by the newly born babe, and also (2nd) because of the possibility it gave the clergy and missionaries of the 19th century to spell it with a double ‘ll’ (thus – Helliona) and assure the more readily their congregations that I was an imp of Hell . . . “

Drie Wegen, Eén Pad

Door Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895 – 1986), Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831 – 1891) en Mabel Collins (1851 – 1927), vertaald door Louis Geertman en Ali Ritsema.

223 Pagina’s | Eerste druk 2006 | Hardcover | Uitgeverij der Theosofische Vereniging in Nederland | ISBN: 9061750881.

English edition: Inspirations from Ancient Wisdom: At the Feet of the Master, Light on the Path, the Voice of the Silence | published in 1999 | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 978-0835607735.

LIEFDE

” Wachtend op het Woord van de Meester,

Uitziend naar het Verborgen Licht;

Luisterend om zijn bevelen op te vangen

In het heetst van de strijd;

Zijn kleinste teken ziend

Over de hoofden van het gewoel;

Zijn zwakste fluistering horend

Boven het luidste aardse gezang. “

Getting Acquainted With The Secret Doctrine (Study Guide)

By John Algeo.

60 Pages | Study guide, first edition 1981, third edition 2007 | Softcover | Quest Books, U.S.A. | ISBN: 9780835602099.

This study guide offers an introduction to Helena Petrovna Blavatsky’s (1831 – 1891) Secret Doctrine – The Synthesis of Science, Religion and Philosophy (1888) based primarily on the ‘Bowen notes’, which purportedly record Blavatsky’s own advice. The work borrows freely, however, from the Wisdom and practice of many others as well and formulates questions rather than answers.

Students of The Secret Doctrine differ considerably in their attitude toward the book and its study. The attitude adopted here – namely that it is remarkable and indeed a marvellous book, but that it is not free from error or in any sense a ‘sacred’ text – is not universally held. But John Algeo believes that it is in the Spirit of the Ageless Wisdom and The Secret Doctrine that we should respect each other’s views, without necessarily sharing them.

From Chapter 6 – ‘How to Study The Secret Doctrine’ (p. 21):

” The Bowen notes tell us that ‘reading the S.D, page by page as one reads any other book’ – for example, a textbook – ‘will only end in confusion’. The notes also give suggestions on how to go about studying the work. They advise the student to hold fast to four basic ideas:

  1. The fundamental unity of all existence with two aspects: consciousness and substance;

  2. The vitality of all matter;

  3. The microcosmic correspondence of human nature to the great cosmos because of our oneness with it;

  4. The hermetic order of the universe as a Divine Economy, which is simultaneously a hierarchy of power and a network of equality. “
